I'm huge on this swap. I've been convincing a lot of engine swap keyboard warrior type on the gospel of diesel. We bought a diesel Porsche Cayenne last year, 700 miles to a tank of fuel. Plus it'll tow my racecar and still get 20 mpg.

I saw a similar setup with a Cayenne that was hauling a porsche track car. I remember being very impressed that it was towing the car, spare tires and all the other gear that comes along with it. I also loved the plate it said GOALS. 👍👍👍👍

@Joe man ,If it is any help I currently have a stretched YJ on 37s D60 rear ,D44 front 5.3/4l80e single turbo . depending on your aptitude and goals /funds you might find a clear winner between the the LS and TDI . If you have never done a swap before it is important to factor in figure out what swap has the most support info wise and parts. Depending on where you are in life ...wife/kids/work, time my be limited so easily sourced answers and parts is a game changer or say prefabbed engine mounts, like say Novak . I have mocked up an engine and had it tacked in on a Saturday morning, vs engine in and out 20 times and taking all weekend and all your brain and your still not sure you like it lol . My experience with the LS 5.3 was a massive improvement over the 4.0l like driving a peppy newer chevy truck thats with proper gearing.(bought a complete truck for $1200 running and driving like stated in the video it is way easier that way. won't nickel and dime you so bad) , but not life changing, but I wanted dirt bike like power so I have sense put a cam and a single turbo. if I were to do it again . I would do just the 5.3 and a cam. The diesel looks very appealing though . I will most likely put one in my other jeep. Just because I cant help myself. Plus I have a cool wife

I looked into doing a 1.9l swap into my XJ, then looked at the OM617. But I wanted to keep my AW4 and not have to worry about a shift controller, etc. So, the 4.7 stroker build stood out the most for me!

interesting fact for off road swap, with the first gen TDI you could swap a pure mechanical injection pump that was available in european light trucks and get rid of the engine computer, electronic pedal, wastegate controller etc a friend of mine did it and could run is engine all the way up to 5500 rpm

I Would love to be able to cruise around town without throwing my entire wallet in the fire, I've done some research and most people are averaging around 10mpg on 40's with A typical LS Swap. I currently get around 5 With the original Amc 360. Definitely need to do a little research on this little diesel motors.

Idk I usually get bored of these car vids with alot of ... Time lapse that's too far away to tell what's happening, or it'll be rambling about someone's plans later on but not what they're doing in the video, thanks man I'm stoked about the next episode!

I bought a 2002 VW Jetta 1.9 TDI Automatic Trans last year for $2,100.00.. No Reverse and the trans was acting up. The seller included a spare 1.9 TDI engine with 163,000 miles on it with another Auto trans that was supposed to be good....Plus 3 large wooden crates with other VW TDI parts from that spare car. I found a guy like you who had done a 1.9 TDI swap into his Toyota pickup truck...he wanted my spare 1.9 engine and offered to put a 5 speed manual trans into my original 2002 Jetta for my extra 1.9 engine and parts... I jumped all over that deal as the parts were just in my way and the trans had recently lost 4th gear. 2 days later he brought my 2002 back with a sweet 5 speed manual and I have been smiling ever since ! 45mpg makes me smile...... pretty quick too !
I also have a 2004 VW Jetta TDI that I bought after I bought the 2002 above. It started and ran but has Low oil pressure. It's a 2004 1.9 BEW (I think) TDI Wagon with 99,000 miles on it...not sure what direction to go with this 2004.

@@austinwinkles3146 the 1.9 TDI is a popular one. There are some good Facebook page groups that will give you a lot of help too. Suzuki samurai owners and Suzuki Diesel. I definitely know what you mean about the lack of power. That little 1.3 gets a workout turning the 33s. I seen a couple months back on the Facebook market place a 2003 VW bug with the bad transmission but a running 1.9 for 500$.

I had a 2004 VW Golf TDI with the BEW motor. It would get 52+ mpg on summer diesel and was probably the best, least maintenance motor, I have ever had. I pulled a trailer with (2) quads like it was nothing but I could feel a 2-up covered clamshell snowmobile trailer on the back when I hauled because of the wind resistance. It was a great car and loved driving 85 in 5th and feeling acceleration when I floored it and no downshifting. I would love to someday do a TDI to TJ swap some day in the future as I think that would be a great project. Thanks for the post and I have also subscribed.

At only 110:1 it crawls over boulders at dead idle & will still spin the tires well if you get the turbo spooled up as you dump the clutch and that's without any mods other than the smoke screw in 1.5 turns & fuel pin indexed.

Nate, I always enjoy your videos and this was no exception. Just one point of clarification (and I'm going to nerd out here for a sec, sorry)... trains are diesel electric - they aren't pulling a load with the diesel, that just turns a generator to power the electric motor that moves the train. If you want to talk torque, I'd love to do an electric swap some day!

Back in 2005 I thought about swapping the Isuzu 4BD1T from my old Isuzu NPR into my '91 YJ but I just love the 4.0L too much. Then about 8 years ago I got a '03 Jetta with the little 1.9L ALH with plans to swap that into my Jeep mainly for the fuel mileage. Well once again my love for the 4.0L was still too strong. Now that complete 1.9L ALH is just sitting in my shed going to waste...
Several years ago I began modifying an extra K-member for one of my Miata's to swap the ALH backed with the AX15 that I have from a 2wd Jeep XJ. Lost interest in the idea even though the engine and trans fit the Miata pretty well. Someday the little ALH will find its home. It just won't be in the engine bay of my '91 YJ.
    Maybe in a boat... LOL

Tdi is super cool, but I think we all want to see a head to head om617 vs tdi. AKA the “cheaper” diesel swap vs the pricier one.

I wish you got more of the TDI logo in the thumbnail :P, i really enjoyed the video and being a VW Golf owner i can say that the TDI's are great, i regularly get 50 MPG out of my 2.0tdi. I use to own a 1.9 tdi and wish i still had one, if i had one i'd do a EGR delete, larger turbo and injectors. Ow and if it was a second hand engine i would clean as much carbon build up out of it as i could. Intake, exhaust manifold, valves and so on.

So I bought an '06 BRM Jetta long before considering to build a crawler. I installed a bigger turbo, Stage 2 cam, and tune on it. Watching these videos really makes me want to rip the motor out and drop it in a YJ or TJ

Nate, I'm so on the same boat with you on TDI swaps. I have swapped the old diesel in my Cherokee XJ for a BMW M57 inline 6 common rail turbo diesel and it kicks some major ass. And I have not done any tune to it yet. It is only a 3 liter and the economy is great. Don't get me wrong, I love my hemi WK but this diesel is half the size engine and will outperform it any time.

I own 101 performance garage in FL. We build rally cars and Jeep's. Our main rally cars are Audis. I don't know why I never thought of swapping a TDI into one of our Wranglers. We were getting ready to do a 4bt. But now TDI looks like a better option. Look forward to watching the rest of the series!
