    I watched an interview with slash a few months back where they asked if he thinks about all the sixths and thirds stuff when he plays and his answer I found interesting and encouraging too was that he just plays what sounds good to him he doesn’t worry so much about being technical as he’s more worried about what sounds good! Just found that interesting as Robert goes all guitar theory on his licks lol

    • @pmcate2
      @pmcate2 3 года назад +23

      Be careful. People who say this are still actually doing theory in their head. (Meaning they more or less are able to hear a musical idea in their head and are able to realize it on their instrument). What they really mean to say is that they never cared to learn how the theory in their head matches up with the agreed upon standard of names and terms given to those musical concepts. The people who criticize learning theory don't get that the names and terms are just for communication convenience. They aren't the essence of theory. The essence is being able to know to play 'that' note over 'that' chord change, etc., which slash is probably able to do to a certain degree.

      I think what he meant was that he breaks the rules (as he knows them-and we all operate on bits and pieces of whatever our current understanding is) when it sounds right. But don’t get too excited about being able to randomly pick notes, all good players have a strong set of rules they follow to sound that good. When you know the rules so well that you can break them and still sound good...you’re probably moving past intermediate level.

    The way I look at it is that you can make a major or minor scale sound as light or dark as you want depending on how you place your accents, imply a resolving tonal centre and bias it with non-chord tones as passing notes. A major scale can be twisted out of all recognition pretty easily, even if you're only playing the chord tones in the right places by the accent. Add in that Slash plays a LOT of hammer-on/pull-off triplets and the placement of the notes becomes even more complex. An exercise that I used for a while was a straight half or quarter time beat with a major/Ionian or natural minor/Aeolian over the top. Hit the "right" notes on the beat and add in a mixture off the beat. It's amazing how much you can get away with here even if you only add in one non-chord tone. That's just me anyway. Great lesson man!

    Slash brought melody and his unique take on the blues back to rock music in a time when everyone was obsessed with playing fast, complex, scalar noodling that borrowed heavily from classical music and was often just variations on warmup and practice exercises. At the time it was common for guitarists to have their solos heavily composed and played the same all the time. Slash, on the other hand, often played a loose framework where he started and ended his solos the same way and improvised the middle. It was rare for him to play the identical solo every night.

    The sharp 3rd is just a chromatic passing tone, so no big deal. But what interests me more is that he is landing on a flat 7th. I don’t know how to explain why that works using my understanding of music theory. If we were in a major scale then I would explain the flat 7th as a “mixolydian flavor”, but we’re in Minor, so...huh. And it’s not pulled from the harmonic minor scale, because that has a raised 7th, not a lowered 7th.

    Another crazy thing about slash’s playing is, if you watch him closely, he rarely uses his pinky when he solos. He mostly just uses 3 fingers. Almost like how Django Rhienhart used only 2 fingers and he was able to shred blazing licks better than most people who use 4 fingers.
    Slash is able to tap into all the scales and can use them together to form this slithering snake blues style that he is known for. Slash is a human being, he is not perfect, I’ve seen him screw up and he just laughs; however he is so technically sound and can also
    Play with great emotion and improvisation, he very rarely makes mistakes and has an incredible memory and ability to put his memory into his fingers and ears to be one of the worlds best living guitarists and musicians of all time.
    Slash is addicted to his guitar playing, like Jimi Hendrix, slash eats sleeps and breaths guitar, in much of his free time away from the stage and studio, he is playing his guitar. In his past lives slash may have been some kind of guitar or lute player because, that is how amazing he truly is.

    Part of this is playing on a ii or a V7 chord, and knowing the difference between combining Major and minor Pentatonic Blues
    Or Combining Dorian and mixolydian.
    Or just playing a Dominant 7th Arpeggio , with some other " borrowed " notes
    You can't always make a "dominant 7" sound happen where Major Pentatonic Blues works . though it is a subtile difference
    The right combination comes from playing on 12 bar blues and other blues rock tunes.
    Hendrix had a good ear for that .

    I like your slash inspired lick, but i think it sounds more good if you try to descend the lick, like high to low cause mostly slash play fast only in descending

    Slash even does crazy bends when he misses a note or the string is out of tune to make it sound correct
