Hi, I've just joined over on Goodreads, and now following you on RUclips. Fabulous idea and no idea how I've missed it over the years of following booktube. I have 6 new big books to read this summer. I've listed them on Goodreads. I also have a chronic illness Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, which at 73 is most boring and most unpleasant. Reading is my main escape. So glad you popped up on my RUclips feed. Julie x

Welcome to Big Book Summer, Julie! To be fair, I've only been on Booktube for 3 years - prior to that, I only hosted Big Book Summer from my blog. I'll take a peek at your posts in the Goodreads group :) And you've REALLY come to the right place - I not only post videos about books but also about living with chronic illness! I also have ME/CFS (22 years now - I'm 58), as well as Lyme disease, and both of my sons also got ME/CFS at ages 6 and 10 (the younger one fully recovered; the older still has it, plus 3 tick infections but is doing well and about to start a full-time job!). So, be sure to also check out my chronic illness videos - there's a whole playlist. I think you would be especially interested in the videos about treatments that have helped us to function so well - correcting sleep dysfunction, diagnosing and treating Orthostatic Intolerance (OI), plus my more recent chronic illness vlogs all about diagnosing and treating thyroid dysfunction and yeast overgrowth (2 biggies for those of us with CFS). Welcome and pleas let me know if you have any questions. So sorry you are also living a life with chronic illness, but I'm glad you found me!

@@SueJacksonDE I'll definitely have to check out your videos on chronic illnesses as well! I'm actually surprised that there are not more us with chronic illnesses in the booktube community, like there is in the yarntube community. Both reading and knitting/crocheting take approximately the same amount of focus, time, and energy, in my experience (unless I am designing a knitting or crocheting pattern). Maybe there are more people with chronic illnesses on booktube than I realize, and I just haven't run into them yet. I have to be judicious with my intake of booktube videos; between the recommended books on other peoples' channels and the dratted bibliographies/footnotes in books I read, my near non-existent self-control when it comes to buying books gets sorely tested. At this point, my books and yarn is graciously making space for me in my home, rather than the other way around...
Thanks for the info for the challenge! I have added my booktube video link to the challenge page of your blog, and have joined the Goodreads group as well. Do you mind if I create a StoryGraph challenge for Big Book Summer Challenge? I feel like StoryGraph sets up their challenges in such a motivational way, by making it quite easy to see how many books you have added to each individual challenge. If you would prefer not to have a StoryGraph challenge set up, I will definitely respect that; this challenge is your baby. So I'll wait until I hear back from you before I do anything on that front. ❤
Thanks for the kind welcome and the fun challenge!

@@tahlia__nerds_out I've actually run into quite a few Booktubers with similar chronic illnesses - in May, I discovered the Spoonie Readathon! I did a video about it. Hosted by Booktubers with illnesses/disabilities. And I recently "met" MicheleLynnReads, who has ME/CFS and some of the other co-morbidities we share. I agree - reading is a great hobby when chronically ill and with limited energy. Though I know some with ME/CFS lose the ability to read due to cognitive dysfunction - so sad. I try to help them by suggesting audios, middle-grade books, graphic novels, etc. So nice to meet you! Oh, and sure, feel free to set up a BIg Book Summer group on Storygraph - others have asked me about that. I'm not on it yet, but leave me the link if you do :)

@@SueJacksonDE I missed the Spoonie Readathon? Ah, maaaaaannnn...... Well, now that I'm following you, I'll be able to see if/when you join in next year. I mostly follow other people who tend to read history books, so maybe that's how I've missed the chronic illness side of booktube. Chronic fatigue, overstimulation, and light sensitivity can make it challenging to find time for both reading and keeping up with watching booktube, so that probably has also contributed to me finding people. Thanks for giving me MicheleLynnReads' name; I have now subscribed to her channel. Oh, it would be so tragic to lose the ability to focus on reading at all! Those are all great suggestions that you have given, though; I hope that they have helped some people who wouldn't have otherwise been able to continue to read!

Hi Suzan! This is my first year of joining the challenge. I confess, I tend to avoid long books even though I really want to read them. Or to have read them?!! I'm starting with Lonesome Dove, which I've always wanted to read. I'm at 10%. We'll see how long that takes, since I plan to continue reading other books in my TBR. But if I finish that in good time, I'm considering Trust by Hernan Diaz. I remember him from Booktopia and shared a table with him at one of the events.

I have read The Covenant of Water. It is one of the best books I’ve read this year. The Fire-Keepers Daughter was a favorite from the past. I read it quite fast.
I have several big books to read. Many of them are nonfiction. You haven’t mentioned nonfiction, so I hope that works as well for this challenge. I just subscribed to your channel.
One of the best things about challenges is the recommendations I get from others. That will be so helpful.
    Here is my list:
    *Eve by Cat Bohannon
    *Capital Dames by Cokie Roberts
    Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
    *Washington by Ron Chernow
*The Count of Monte Christo by Alexander Dumas
    Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
    Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn

There is one book I highly recommend that is hard to find. It's The Dollmaker by Harriet Arnow. I have an old small paperback copy that is 608 pages. It's one that really grabs your heart. I couldn't find it at any libraries near me and it seems to be out of print. I bought an extra copy that I came across on Thrift Books and offered to send it to another book tuber but she wasn't accepting books. I highly recommend it though.

Hi Sue, I love the idea of big book summer and just joined the Goodreads Group. I really want to read The Weight of Ink By Rachel Kadish and I am sure I will more big books to read. Do you have scheduled meetings or do people just write about what they are reading and respond to each other? It is my first time so I don't quite know how it all works.

    • @SueJacksonDE
      @SueJacksonDE  6 месяцев назад

Welcome to Big Book Summer, Ann! It's pretty simple, especially if you don't have a blog or RUclips channel - be sure to leave a comment in the Sign-Ups thread of the Goodreads group (then I will know to include you in the end-of-summer giveaway drawing). Then you can add a comment to the group whenever you like and read others' comments and reply to them. It's a fun book chat all summer long. There are discussion threads for What Big Book Are You Reading? And another one for when you finish a Big Book. That's it! Just read your books, interact and chat with other readers, and enjoy! It's a fun community. You know, though, I was just thinking that a Zoom meeting might be fun sometime - I'll think about that! Oh, and my book group really enjoyed The Weight of Ink!

This video seems to really start at 12:25. I guess everything before that is really administrative stuff. Just a modest suggestion--I'd start with the books and then end with administrative info, which is generally not going to be as interesting to folks.
Lonesome Dove is a 10/10 book. McMurtry writes in a way where the reader just flies through the pages.
