Buffy Summers | You didn't earn it

  • In celebration of Buffy Summers' 40th birthday last week I decided to do a video centred around Anya's speech in Empty places. It never made much sense to me, because becoming the slayer is not something you earn. It is just something thrust upon you. Buffy never wanted it, never asked for it, but she damn well spent the next seven years after she had been called proving that she deserved to be in that leadership role. If Anya had said the speech in season 1, fair enough Buffy probably hadn't earned it by that point. But in the context of the seven years leading up to it; she died twice, killed the love of her life, sacrificed herself for the world and saved it numerous times. She had stopped everything that had ever come up against her and ultimately spent her life feeling alone because she could never have the normal life she wanted to. Everyone around her had been tempted by the dark side, Willow, Giles, Faith and Anya. Yet Buffy never lost her humanity, and always forgave her friends who did. Being the slayer is not lucky, yeah you get slayer strength, but the other aspects you lose because of that just do not measure up, as Anya had said earlier in the season, "Short, brutal death" is how she described the life of a slayer. Tell us Anya, how does that make someone luckier than you? They spend an entire season looking to her to lead, leaning on her and pressuring her to make all the decisions, Giles even insisted she became a general, but the minute she does and it does not go exactly how they wanted, they turn on her. tut tut. Buffy Summers you deserve better than that.
    #Fanvidfeed #Btvs #BuffySummers
    Hope you all enjoy!
I own nothing but the editing.

Buffy “earned it” the moment she outsmarted a vampire with holy water sans full slayer abilities and saved her mother. She earned it killing the love of her life for everyone else. She earned it dying twice and getting no reprieve from the evil constantly knocking at her door.

So wat about niki she lived along time just like buffy even had a son. Buffy only earned it because the support of friends and family there is nothing special about her. She was given the role by higher powers she didn't earn the role of leader. It was given to her she just rose to the occasion. If faith or any slayer had buffy kind of support they could have done the same. Angel ,Willow giles, wesley Gunn cordelia had no power but worked hard and became strong powerful leaders without the responsibility being shoved on them.

The ideal of this show has been engrained in pop culture. It was overdue. I know the bad situations going on around Joss, but he did create a movement with his work with the Whedonverse. Talents, writers, crew....they have all made some serious differences in today's shows...especially of the sci-fi genre.
I can respect and accept the talent of the genius, separate from the deeds of the human. But only about the talent because of the impact. Sarah never have to work again because she is now legend. She is an iconic figure. She did the role so damned well.

I've often wondered why the writer's decided to have everyone turn on her except for Faith and Spike. I'd like to think it's because the whole series spoke to her true strength being her friends and family, she lasted longer than any other because of her connections to family. This episode and the final showed the truth that only Spike and Faith understood. Buffy survived not because of her connections to others, but because her inner strength that came from her separation from the world. She was strong enough on her own because of the core of who she was as a slayer and as a person. She chose everyone of those personal connections and when Faith did the body switch she finally understood it was Buffy's ability to love and connect with others that made her stronger, not the connections themselves. So in the end being turned out of her home allowed all to see her true strength was within her all along. Spike was the messenger who put this to words in his speech to her about what he loves about her. Anya saying Buffy thinks herself better than the rest of them when even Buffy struggled with this concept shows in the end that she IS better then the rest, she sacrificed herself over and over for them. Not one character throughout the entire show did that or could come close to doing what she did time and time again.

HOWEVER, no one ever seems to acknowledge that Buffy died THREE times. Everyone recognizes the season 1 and season 5 deaths. What people forget is that Buffy died season 6 episode 20. After being shot, she flatlines in the hospital. Only for a moment, and then Willow brings her back. But, her season 1 death was only her heart stopping for moments too, and the Powers That Be considered that dead enough to Call a new slayer.
Yes, it is nitpicking. But I just needed to point it out because no one else ever does.
Again, this video was great. The cuts between clips were extremely smooth and I am very impressed.

Anya saying it I understand tbh, she has a history of being cowardly in the face of apocalypses (the ascension and even when glory was trying to open the portal she said she was only staying for Xander really). I seriously doubt she wanted to be there, the fact that she is at all is HUGE character development for her. But still, she's terrified and what she's saying is coming out of a place of fear. What I will never understand is how Willow, Dawn and Xander don't stick up for her. Xander I can maybe see since he did just lose an eye, but Buffy protected Dawn, literally gave her life to save Dawn even though, as Glory said, it would be better for everyone if she died quickly. She said that she would protect Dawn to the ends of the Earth, and proved it, she said that if the portal opened and everyone died, the last thing Dawn would see is Buffy protecting her. The LAST thing Buffy would do is put Dawn at risk if she wasn't certain it was necessary for the upcoming war. And Dawn KICKED HER OUT

She's also saying this to the person who was forced out of heaven and came back to even more responsibility than she had before. She had to work at a fast food restaurant all day just to keep paying bills for the house while Dawn (who is old enough to work) doesn't help at all. Even just a weekend job for a handful of hours a week would help, especially considering how Buffy is essentially working 2 jobs since she has to go out every night for a patrol as well. I can't imagine how little sleep S6 Buffy was getting and she kept on moving along every day trying to do her best. Dawn should have no say on who is allowed or not allowed to stay in that house.

At the end of the day I really can't share into the outrage the fandom feels towards Buffy's friends for this scene. The whole point was how scared they all were, and how they started spiraling. Anya's speech comes from a place of such human fear, it is just tragic to see these characters become undone under the stress, and how Buffy herself can't give them the answers they need. But at the end of the day Buffy became more than the Slayer, she became a Leader, and that is what she earned. She broke the cycle of being a weapon, and sure her friends helped her along the way, but it was her own realized potential as Buffy what allowed her to lead, and face and defeat the First Evil.

And then spike coming back to putting them all in their place saying what was exactly on all our minds that was such a feel good moment after that bs scene with Anyas speech, we were all cheering for Spike! I know it was the writers excuse for them to have Buffy fight on her own one last time before the final battle despite it being out of character for a lot of them, in my mind it just highlights that despite the potential slayers being there and Faith that they would never compare to Buffy, none of the characters could deal with weight that was on Buffy’s shoulders, she wasn’t just strong in strength but in the mind too. • @hardybryan
      @hardybryan 3 года назад +35

@@anomalykru8552 I'm not bothered by it for a few reasons. First, there just isn't time. Second, Buffy is a real leader and doesn't need them to apologize in the moments we see upon her return, she needs them to get together, treat the wounded and execute the plan.
But beyond that, the truth is they weren't entirely wrong. Now, that meeting got completely out of hand due to the low morale and fear, but those things existed because of leadership. Buffy isn't perfect this season. People have been talking about how she talks at them for months at this point, including to her face. Yes, she's trying to gear them up for a war they're not prepared for, but her skill set hasn't gotten that job done.
Of course it has for the audience, we've seen her fight, her will, her sacrifice over and over. So have these characters, but the difference is we're sitting on our couches watching. They are terrified. They doubt her, because of what's just happened (when she went in recklessly after being warned by them and ignoring them). And now she wants to go right back in when they've felt like fodder for months and have just experienced being exactly that.
The truth is, Faith was right from a team survival perspective. Buffy needed to sleep on it and let the team prepare themselves instead of rushing back in to a fight they weren't prepared to make. Buffy was right from a mission standpoint in that they needed the scythe and the team falls right back in line when they see her, which is all that matters for the mission. And when she returns, she understands she needs to include the team and not just order them. Which is what is needed for their friendship.

I understand that Buffy didn’t need an apology, with the current situation and end of the world going on, but that goes with your first point that there wasn’t enough time, story wise for me to believe that could happen coherently within the story to still give a satisfactory ending to these relationships we had come to love. I get they needed the stakes to be high, but I question the execution, as a group of scared people really kick out their best fighter and her friends would let Buffy go on her own knowing the threat that’s looming. I dunno, It just doesn’t ring right to me. It would have been nice, if we had more time for those friendships to be mended, or at least a scene between them which cemented that they are still friends and not just work buddies. By the end of S7, I only really felt that Buffy and Xander were best friends. It seemed like her and Willow had become work colleagues.
Faith was the only one through that entire scene I could stand, and agreed with what she said. I wish we had more time to watch Faith and Buffy getting along.

All her pain, all her suffering... how anyone can even attempt to say she's "lucky" was wild. I'm not trying to bash any characters because despite how season 7 was pretty much a mess when it came to character development, but absolutely none of them had the right to bash her for absolutely anything. I do love almost all of their characters despite their faults and the show as a whole, but I'll stand behind Buffy forever. I really do think she was better than them. She earned the right to those powers every time that she picked up a stake, but I don't think it was as much of a gift as people made it out to be. Yet she still did it, because that's who she is; she still put her life on the line to defend each and every one of them day in and day out. You've captured the friction between Buffy Buffy and Slayer Buffy with blunt honesty and beauty. Just a girl...but the Slayer is infinitely more than that. The word 'earn'...every impossible decision she's made, every loved one she's lost, every time she put her duty to her calling first. Of course she's earned it. As Spike says, kindness...strength...selflessness...Buffy Summers learned through experience and wisdom from knowing Kendra that being the Slayer is who she is, as opposed to what she is. Your video is a staunch declaration of why Buffy earned her calling. Though there were times when she wanted normality, wanted to give up...Buffy still showed up. Ensouled Spike loves Buffy because she tries. We love Buffy because she inspires us to never stop trying.

I think that the writers wanted Buffy to be in as much pain as possible and having a someone, a friend, specifically, viciously attack one of her main insecurities was what they came up with. The concept is fine, but the execution was so forced.

Buffy earned it every time she kept fighting. That's the difference between Buffy and a lot of other superheros. Buffy didn't want to be a superhero. She did it because it was right. That's a true hero. A lot of the other super heros we see all seem super motivated to be a hero. Buffy wanted to be average. We see that again and again. It's echoed in season five when she saved that teenage boy and he says "But you're just a girl," and she tells him, "That's what I keep saying." She got up and fought even when she didn't want to. She was chosen because she was strong enough to bear the burden of what it meant to be a Slayer. She far exceeded the potential phase. In the words of Spike, she was "the one."

Nobody earns doing their duty. Nobody asks for it. And nobody deserves special gratitude for accepting that they have to simply do their basic duty, whatever that is. Different for different people in different circumstances. Buffy had greater powers, so obviously the expectations for what she could achieve and should contribute to the world were equally greater. That's only fair.
Buffy was just like my students who expect to be given extra credit for doing their homework. They don't ask for it; they don't want to do it, they don't have a choice. Those who are not academically inclined feel it's a burden. But they don't deserve praise for just doing what they are expected to do. They are lucky to have the advantage of free education, as Anya would be telling them; and they are obligated to do the best they can with it. You'll get extra credit from me for having a good helpful attitude. If you complain about having to do it, it doesn't count as help. And none of my students think I'm a horrible teacher because those are the rules in my classroom. But Buffy wouldn't last five minutes.

@@sophxx3642 I still stand by my original point. Buffy did her duty, nothing more than that. As she should. That doesn't earn her anything in my book, especially with all the times she had a bad attitude about it being such a 'burden.' Helping others is not a burden; it's a privilege that as Anya said, Buffy was lucky to have such ability to carry out. The others, even down to Dawn, actually WANTED to help save the world - something that they weren't even equipped to do and certainly didn't have a duty to do. THEY were the ones going above and beyond and yet they are called selfish for not doing everything when they actually did not have to do anything; and Buffy is praised for being so noble because she made sure everybody in the show and the audience knew just how much she was sacrificing (no one remembers the others making the exact same sacrifices because they didn't complain about it. Dawn was prophesied to die at 14 like Buffy had been at 16. Buffy saved her; but Xander had saved Buffy. They were equal in that first instance, but Dawn didn't cry over the fact that she was going to have to die to save the world. No one remembers that she would have WILLINGLY sacrificed herself for the world where in Season One Buffy did it UNWILLINGLY). Disliking doing what you have to do anyway doesn't make you a good person! I do not admire people who complain about having to do the right thing and then expect recognition for doing it. If life gives you lemons, girl, make lemonade.
No one ever talks about my favourite episode, The Zeppo, where Xander shows, to my way of thinking, the truest example of heroism in the entire show. He's scorned and dismissed as not being good enough to help save the world. Instead of having a fully justified existential crisis about his supposed worthlessness (which Buffy could never understand; she knows her life matters!) or deciding not to bother helping people who don't appreciate him anymore, which would also be entirely justified, he goes off and saves the world all on his own. Without superpowers or backup or anything to offset his much higher chance of dying than Buffy would have in the same situation. And then he never tells anyone. He lets them continue to think they're better than he is and that he contributed nothing to saving the world that night. Xander didn't care about power or recognition; he just cared about helping others. Now THAT is what makes you a good person.

She earned it the moment she left her normal teenage life to become a slayer, when she sacrificed herself at 16 years old because of the master, when she killed angel (in my opinion her only true love), when she gave her life to close the hell portal, when, as she put it, she was tore out of heaven by her friends (later in angel skip confirmed this saying she was in paradise) and went along with the fact that she was in hell and didn't tell her friends until when she was forced to in Once More
With Feeling, when she was kicked out of her home by friends and family by making a tough decision like Giles wanted her to do, also when she came back with out an apology and fought along side all of them to save the world once again. There are so many more reasons but these are some of the basic ones.

If Buffy were to kick everyone out, where would they go that could accommodate all the people that would offer protection of the invitation rule, with that many weapons readily available? Giles has no home in Sunnydale. Willow hasn't considered her parent's place home since she left for college. Xander's apartment? Not big enough and not nearly enough weapons. The Summer's house was their only protection. Buffy could survive outside of it, but not one of those fools could. She left to keep those girl's and her friends safe, because she IS the BETTER person.

First, if everyone wanted a new leader, whatever. I disagree, but whatever. However, kicking Buffy out was stupid, as her house (as of the beginning of this episode) is the only place in Sunnydale vampires don't have entrance to. As for Buffy throwing herself out, as some people argue, she's not leaving willingly. And that is because she knows they will not follow her as general anymore (ie sixth point). She leaves to go fight alone (ie tenth point about slayers always fighting alone).
Second, Xander not only retcons everything good he says about Buffy during his earlier episode speech by kicking her out, but in the two hour pilot when Buffy says, "Xander, this is deeply dangerous," and he dismisses it and thinks she's thinking him, "less than a man," I criticize him (and everyone else) for not listening to that moment as well as not listening to all her S7 speeches or any other moments like those. Also two episodes from now in _End of Days,_ Xander referenced being with Buffy to the end. How does kicking Buffy out during a battle (that they are even referencing as a final battle) help with being with Buffy to the end? He has a lot of nerve saying that after kicking her out of her house and kicking her out of fighting the war with him.
Third, Anya was one of four people who resurrected Buffy (the others being Willow, Tara and Xander) and therefore allowed The First to take advantage of the S7 plot of killing the slayer line. She, Giles and possibly Willow knows this, so them blaming Buffy is dumb.
Fourth, It is also a joke to have Anya say Buffy didn't earn the role considering everything she has done for them. The list on that could go on for 104 hours and 34 minutes (the rest of the series makes for a total of 106 hours and 42 minutes).
Fifth, Faith didn't want to be in charge and tried telling people that. But they were all too busy acting superior towards Buffy to listen.
Sixth, why did Giles call Buffy the general of the group if he was just going to undermine her at every decision he didn't like and toss her out when things went wrong? Buffy warned them all things like this would happen. Why weren't they listening?
Seventh, Post S6 Willow has a lot of nerve calling Buffy on a lack of judgement.
Eighth, didn't the Scoobies (including Dawn) learn how stupid it was when Joyce kicked Buffy out in S2?
Ninth, Joyce is proven to be The First in _Conversations with Dead People_ when it is shown that Dawn doesn't choose Buffy by kicking Buffy out in this episode. It is not the other way around as Joyce aka The First said. Dawn fell into a trap. The trap being that by kicking Buffy out they didn't choose her. Joyce as The First telling them Buffy wouldn't choose Dawn was a ploy for them to turn on Buffy. So in essence, kicking Buffy out is what The First wants and The Scoobies act as unwitting agents of The First.
Tenth, Buffy brought up certain points to Xander during their _Selfless_ fight, so the fact that the group in this episode is throwing those moments in Buffy's face (those moments specifically being: cutting herself off, someone needing to draw a line, having no guide book to the job of a slayer [and there is a slayer guidebook/handbook, Giles just never gives it to her, so that one is on him], and fighting alone) shows The Scoobies haven't been listening to Buffy even before the war with The First started about even the moments not involving The First and its war.
Eleventh, Buffy learned from Giles "this isn't a joke" chastisement moment in First Date, while none of the other Scoobies did if they were recently going to The Bronze for fun. Giles himself seemed to revert if he is urging the fun after the _First Date_ chastisement, or at least he has an agenda of his own that goes against what he said when he called Buffy the general upon first showing up in Sunnydale, so the group go against everything Buffy learned in _First Date, I Never Kill a Boy on the First Date_ and _Reptile Boy_ when they kick Buffy out.

Thank you for the analysis! And I couldn’t agree more! All your points are 100% valid. What’s more to this scene, there’s never a post fight scene where any of the scoobies apologise or even attempt to justify their actions or explain their reasons, and because of that it falls flat and feels like their is no resolve by the end of the series.

@@anomalykru8552 Right! I even have my own head-canon allowing Buffy to "let them have it" (for use of a better phrase) over all the times they yelled at her after Dawn asks "what do we do now Buffy" at the series end and how Buffy wanting time away from them for a while can be tied into the beginning of S8 and the AtS S5 stories.
