- Miniscribe was a successful hard drive manufacturer in the 1980's that supplied hard disks to such companies as IBM and Compaq. Also, to inflate their numbers, they filled some of their hard drive inventory with literal bricks. Seriously.

The one thing MiniScribe *did* have after they fired all the middle managers was the R&D department in Colorado, and that's what Maxtor mainly wanted. Maxtor was a high-end disk drive maker who was getting hit hard by the market; they needed a cheap mass-market drive, and MiniScribe had exactly that in their last hurrah, the 7000-series drives. Maxtor would continue making and upgrading the 7000 drives until they replaced the entire line with the DiamondMax around 1996.
I grew up in the 80's... almost thinking a brick was too light.

This is one of those companies where folks who aren't in specific fields or hobbies wouldn't likely know the full history or story of this, or even understand the scale of what happened with this company. I'd read up on this company before for a paper talking about defunct tech companies in uni, so getting this video on my feed so shortly after upload must me a sign lol. Keep up the great work, these vids have been taking over my recommended and I'm loving it. Playing your Enron video next while I start on a work project.

I'm from Cincinnati and just about every location near me has closed due to bankruptcy but would love to watch a video on it done by yourself! Also party city is going our of business and big lots is hanging on barely. Would be cool to see those covered. I loved the block buster video so perhaps a Hollywood video episode

Corporations are just layers of middle managers all trying to look like their job is valuable then upper management and the people who actually do the work.
in the 1980s IBM had a serious problem with too many managers on average for every 50 employees there was a manager..it was mandated that once a group hit 50 employees there would be a manager assigned ..so new groups would be created and 50 people would be hired so that the manager could meet that mandate..at some point they reached a level of mid and upper level managers that nothing was getting done..so John Fellows Akers (IBM CEO) himself was going to fix it..he chopped thousands of managers and mid level managers..within 2 years the same problem was back..the mentality was set in ..10-15 years later that division collapsed ..the IBM Mainframe division...
John Fellows Akers said at one time that due to so much red tape it could take months to order a box of floppy disks..i worked as a contractor in the early 90's for IBM and that quote is accurate the shear amount of paperwork we had to fill out (and the number of managers that needed to approve it) to request supplies was mind boggling!
People wonder how Microsoft outmaneuvered IBM ...

I find your videos informative and educational. And mostly fun- but PLEASE PLEASE get a better microphone, peramp, and stay out of the bathroom or kitchen when recording? The eq ing and set up is harsh, bright, fatiguing to listen to- and worse of all hard to hear clearly and is headache inducing at best. Shoot- i have a shure boundary mic that you can wire and use and have if you can handle the shipping. Message if you can figure that out- but please, invest in your audio..video editing is fine. But audio is really not great. Please upgrade! ❤
