- VB Victoria Bitter commercial from 1988. Love the good old VB ads, so AUSTRALIAN!!!! The best cold beer is Vic, Victoria Bitter!!! Have to say that bloke at the beach on the banana lounge looks a lot like a 1970s Sonny Bono.

The VB ads summed up a large part of Aussie culture for decades. It's hard to deny that some of those times back then were truly great. Aussies never pretended they were better than anyone else, which was part of the charm. RIP to the late 20th century.
The ads certainly summed up that no-one was pretending they were anything other that Anglo-Saxon.

I watched this ad and loved it when I was 7. It didn't make me into an alcoholic as the government propagates. But it did make me appreciate being a hard working man more and the satisfaction of earning a cold beer at the end of a long hot day. When was the last time in the past ten years you saw a commercial dedicated to the hard working man like this one? Times have fallen apart.
It's gotten worse in 2021. Today, it seems to be the mantra "Perception is reality" and I deserve something for nothing.
We used to have a saying in the Army many years ago that was instilled into me by the senior SGTs and Warrant Officers:
"Gear before beer"
ie you don't get to knock off and have a cold beer until your rifle is clean, your marching gear is serviceable and your work area is tidy. Every new day was just as hard as the one before it.
When I became a SGT and Warrant Officer, I too was just as hard on my young diggers...tough but fair. Plenty of hard earned cold beers were drank
The ad is simple...a HARD EARNED thirst needs a big cold beer
not an EASILY ACHIEVED thirst
not a WELFARE thirst
not a thirst that was given to me because I thought I deserved it and cried if I didn't get it.

This advert reminds me of my father and uncles, all hard working family men. Great memories associated with them sitting around having a laugh together while enjoying some vbs at the end of a hard day's work.

My kid brother Marty loved to tell the story of his time in London drinking warm beer. Frustrated he asked an Aussis barmen for a cold beer - as luck would have it the mate knew a cold Vic would do the trick. RIP Marty, miss ya man.

I drank VB up to the age of 20, then got onto Carlton Cold in my 20s, then moved into craft beers in my 30s. Now I'm in my late 40s and I got back to drinking VB. Some things never change.
I still like XXXX, Reschs and Melbourne Bitter though.....

The replacement these days for men in 2017 is a skinny Latte served in a avocado skin or the endless influx of foreign beers which pretty much sealed V.B's. fate. An ad like this would be now deemed as: Bogan, Nationalist, Sexist, Drongo, Racist and probably uneducated by the elite libtard few etc. Which is such a shame because I feel it's a great part history but it's probably a part of history that newer generations of Aussies would be ashamed off and who would do their best in trying sweep under the carpet!!?!
