    To think I always used to select a surface and then drag it along the endless string of line only to hope the final mesh is clean and solid without any gaps offace holes or any other nasty shenanigans when you can just select the entire edge path and just click once for sketchup to do it perfectly fine for you... And i considered myself a pro at sketchup xd. You're a lifesaver, Justin

    Extrude along a line or spline just seem impossible with SketchUp. The Follow Me and Keep doesn't really provide great results at all even if it manages to keep model upright. Is that the only "follow me" plugin there is? Pipe Along Path doesn't really work since it can only do a perfect round along a line.

    @10:44 - I’ve tried multiple times to create a curved solid (a rounded fireplace) using the follow me tool to extrude a simple recurve shape around a 90 degree arc. The result should look like 1/4 of an 14’ foot tall, inverted vase or jug. Each time, the extrude is funky, with a notch in the corner at the center of the arc because the extrude jumps outside the selected path at the top. The extrude looks fine at the bottom 6” but the whole solid is slightly wider at the top than on the bottom. The curved profile is clean and correct but the vertical edges of the resulting solid lean outward, outside the vertical plane at the radii of the 1/4 circle. It’s kinda bizarre. I’ve started over with new geometry, made sure the profile I’m extruding is 100% vertical and still, the same, weird result.
    Thoughts?

    So I create a group like a handrail that has a unique top rail and then intermediate rails at 4" OC (7 groups nested in a larger group). I create the line that I want to follow. Sketchup pro 2019 doesn't seem to allow me to select the railing group and then to follow the line. I can get rid of all the groups and individually use the tool for each one. But when I download or create a more complicated shape that doesn't work. It seems that tis tool should be able to be used with a group. WHat am I missing?

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 лет назад

      I guess I don't quite understand the issue - The follow me tool only follows a single path, so it won't follow all or the rails at once...

    I am pretty new to Sketchup's Follow Me tool, and almost every time I try to do a circular extrusion, I get the following message: "Warning the path you have selected does not start or end on the extrusion cross section. Unexpected results may occur." And it is correct, because the results are not what I want. If I try drawing a chain link using two parallel lines with a arc closing both ends, I get the warning and then a chain link with pieces missing in both end curves. I know it probably is a simple error on my part, but I just can't find it.

    Hi, great video. Buuuuut, I have a question, you used only 24 segments. I tried to make a Sheave with a radius of 15 and 106 segments. For the life of me, I cannot get that Follow Me function to work on that. How would you make a Sheave/Pulley that's as round (max segments) as possible???

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      The number of segments shouldn't affect this. Does it work if you have less segments?

    • @esm4porsche181
      @esm4porsche181 6 лет назад

      @@Thesketchupessentials Thanks for your reply. When I use the original amount of segments, it works. Once I increase the amount, it starts messing up my Sheave. Here's a quick video to show the difference between 24 segments and 106 segments (With 24 segments it looks like I need it) ruclips.net/video/-g43TSdtGoM/видео.html

      Try scaling your object up about 5x, running follow me, then scaling it back down again. If your object is fairly small, SketchUp may be having trouble creating all the tiny little edges associated with a smoother curve...

    Five years and I didn't know the path doesn't have to be attached to the face or line to be extruded. It's a Yogi Berra moment. On the other hand, more "complex casework" we don't need, but it's good for laying out geothermal lines. The "reverse" FollowMe is similar to how Sketchup extrapolates a topographical sheet from a Google Earth *.png . That was another Yogi event.
