    I agree! I personally don't think Mark and Gemma will end up together because I believe one of the main moral questions in this show is confronting and processing grief. I think if they had Mark and Gemma end up together, it would be hard to make a point on the importance of acceptance in death, grief, trauma, etc... I LOVE your videos by the way. They are keeping my impatience for season 2 at bay lol

      true. as our host here previously said, Gemma's true personality is probably dead since the car crash, and they implanted her as a test to see if a dead person can still be of some use. in the end of the series, if they manage to stop the implant's effects, she might be dead for good, since they cannot revive her outie.

    I think maybe the four of them will be reset. The innies will have memory wipes and Hellys outburst on stage will be covered up by clever PR. The four of them will be returned to the severance floor but will be separated and working in separate department but Helly and Mark will somehow find each other and then the other two as well. They will gather what they think happened before the wipe and manage to "escape" again, this time for longer

    I like the prospect that Helly and Helena truly have opposing values. It’s so much more interesting when a person or character is faced with two conflicting parts of oneself or even completely opposing social identities. It’s also interesting to note that while Helly is fighting for freedom, Helena is fighting (barely) to keep severed people imprisoned. Helena has all the power, while Helly has none of it.

  • @SerPapus

    You forgot about the fact that they can turn on and off their severed self’s from the inside… even if they turn her off.
    Mark or any else could switch the flitch..
    And I don’t think they’ll just unsevered her. It could be deemed as a failure …
    Also we don’t know that if you get re-severed , that you start a new consciousness. Could be the same one.
    Maybe marks wife was resevered.. and they want to see if she remembered

  • @MrMasterKaio

    I never questioned why they made Innie Helly do actual work and even torture her in the breakroom like the others. That's such a good point.
    Maybe it really has to do with their weird number sorting based on emotions.
    I had a few thoughts on the code detector and I think I'll just put it here, 'cause people might be interested. Obviously I would be interested in a video about that topic, or other topics on the technology used in Severance:
    Theory 1: If it actually exists, does it detect digital codes? Because Helly R. leaves with a CD or DVD in her hand, after she threatened to cut her fingers off.
    They could've manually disabled the Code Detector for that moment, but, if the Code Detector just doesn't detect digital codes, then it would've been possible for Petey to smuggle out the Tape, without triggering it.
    Theory 1.1: Also at least MDR uses sort of retro/ancient Computer technology. Why? Is it so they can't burn info onto a CD or quickly copy something on a USB stick?
    Theory 2: The Code-Detector is actually not in the elevator. The Elevator just triggers their brain-implant, which then analyzes the brain activity and finds out, if the person smuggling knows he is smuggling something. Which would mean, as long as the person smuggling something doesn't know their smuggling something, they can get anything out and into the office. It just has to be someone else putting it into their pocket without their knowledge.
    Theory 2.1: If it's actually the brain implant that detects, wether employees are trying to smuggle out coded information, then the implant might have the ability to detect, wether a Lumon employee "really means it" when they apologize in the break-room.
    Theory 2.2: Why is the code detector just in the elevator? We never see MDR workers having to hand paper-work or anything else over to other departments. Maybe it would be overkill. But it's also weird that there aren't scanners which detect employees being somewhere where they're not supposed to be.
    Theory 3: The Code-Detector is total bullshit. Lumon just knows that new Employees will try to smuggle out info in their first few days they're in there. So they surveil them very closely and trigger the Code-Detector manually, to make them believe the detector is actually catching it all.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  9 месяцев назад +9

      Same here. It's funny how basic questions like this sometimes get overlooked. I remember being floored when I first read the concept.
      Also, theory 2 is where I would most of my bet. I do think they can tell if the severed elevator rider is hiding something (sometimes), but it's based on their thoughts interacting with the chip somehow. As you mentioned, it also explains how Petey could smuggle the tape out, assuming he did it alone.
      Great theories here, though. Thanks for sharing!

    • @173Eli173Eli
      @173Eli173Eli 8 месяцев назад +2

      Theory 2.1, wow I never thought of this, I kind of assumed it was based on vocal cues, they actually have like detector tests for law enforcement like this, but your theory makes more sense for the story. On the other side of it, then they should know when the severed are lying or up to no good no matter where they are.

    • @satyropodobny101
      @satyropodobny101 5 месяцев назад +3

      I really like the 3rd theory, since it ties into the reveal that nobody staffs the security room besides Graner and the entire thing functions as a panopticon; it's true function is to influence Innies behavior by convincing them all their transgressions will be detected and punished rather than surveil everyone 24/7

    I think Helena must feel as if working at Lumen is the only way she can have control of her life in some way- I get the sense that her father, and his company by extension, are a very controlling influence in her life, which we see when the woman, speaking for "the board" fires Ms Cobel for covering up the fact that Helly tried to kill herself in the elevator. The fact that Helena managed to keep it secret from her father- and somehow managed to keep it secret from a company which clearly has a lot of sway in the medical industry- suggests that she must have wanted to do so. From the way that Jame speaks about it at the party, it sounds like he only just found out about it recently, and- presumably- that Helena doesn't live in the same household as him, because she wasn't there to see him crying (unless she was at work at the time of course).

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  9 месяцев назад +5

      When he first speaks with her, he used the words "when they told me", in reference to hearing about the news of her attempted suicide. I thought that was an interesting choice for the dialogue because it suggests that there is some distance between these two characters, which supports the idea that she may have done this to please him (fear/reverence) while not being all that gung-ho about the project itself.

    I wonder why nobody seems to know Helena - considering Jame is “famous” within the Lumen town…but Mark didn’t recognize her on the parking lot. Also, she parked as far away as Mark (I assume) - so she didn’t get a better treatment on the outside either. And when she talks to Milchick before the chip treatment, she seems nice and humble - not too different to her innie. Really wonder where they take her character!! Thanks for video!

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  9 месяцев назад +6

      100% She does seem like a nice person when she is with Milchick, which is another thing that makes me wonder if she really is the blackhearted person we saw in that video she recorded lol. She may be estranged from the family or just distant enough that she isn't easily recognized by the average person. That' the only reason I can imagine at this point.

    • @sandydee4546

      @@nautilusfiles Yes, I agree - the video was kinda odd in regards to anything else we saw of Helena. Especially as she promised to make Helly’s life miserable if she ever tried something harmful again - but then didn’t punish her at all after the suicide attempt. In fact, she didn’t even tell anybody (or at least not her dad) that she almost died. So hopefully we will see more of her real motivations soon! Thank you so much again for your videos, they rock!🥳

    I think you are right about Mark and Gemma never being a couple again, because I believe that outie Gemma is dead. Basically I think that Ms. Casey is the only thing left alive in Gemma's body. And for Mark, that fact could actually be more horrific than if Gemma's body had died when her real mind died. It reminds me of the saying "How can you hurt someone who has already had everything taken from them? Give them back something broken."
    As for Helly undergoing severance, I have two ideas. The first idea is that unknown to her, her body is being prepared to be the vessel for Jame's (there is your "s", haha) Revolving. Her experience in MDR is a dry run. And if successful, then Helly's innie can be wiped, and replaced by Jame's consciousness. And Helena's outie would just be permanently repressed, or simply used as needed.
    The second idea is that MDR's function is about an experiment for partial and controlled re-integration. And that Helena volunteered for this, because she and Jame thought that she would not go rogue If there were complications. That could also tie in with "Revolving", if each new Egan heir were able to absorb (but not be taken over by) previous Egans.
    As usual, your videos are wonderful and very thought provoking!

    • @ChatterboxFM
      @ChatterboxFM 9 месяцев назад +1

      I was thinking that too. Whether or not Lumon orchestrated the car crash, they could have easily seen her as a perfect candidate due to her being already brain-dead. Lumon is directly involved in medical equipment and it’s highly likely they run multiple hospitals and have databases with continuous stream of subjects.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  9 месяцев назад +3

      Good theories. I especially the idea that this was prep for her future role as CEO. It leaves room for Helly to see things from both ends of the issue and it just might be what pushes her towards being an ally (I hope). Assuming that the procedure is still fairly new, she might be the first person in the lineage to have the experience a normie severed existence before ascending to big boss status. Always a pleasure, ravenlord!

    Nautilus please cover Devan next. She is going to be the hero/catalyst for the story arc - she and her husband. The only 1 out of the 4 who has someone with their back, on the outside is Mark. If Devan doesn’t let severed Mark return to Lumen then he’s able to save the others from the outside. He will be the only Outie who is “in the know” and therefore his two halves will be whole and finally acting in unity. He will be the only character to have such coherence, without undergoing the traumatic medical procedure(s) that Petey underwent. This story line is already underway. Even if they turn him “on” while on the outside Devan can fill innie Mark in too. Mark can and will be the change agent. It all depends on Devan: his best friend and sister. She also shares with Mark a love for Gemma and a hatred for Ms Cobel. Additionally she has a connection to the most powerful political legislative advocate for Lumen, via his wife’s innie. The fact her husband is the literal source of enlightenment and character motivation for the 4 is another clue as to her symbolic role. She’s the Obi Wan/ Gandalf of the story. Yet there is no content on her character. If you include this post in a future video- can you give me a shout out? Thank you. If you do a search there are zero posts on Devan on yt. And on Reddit there is a lot of hatred and suspicion around her character. Yes it’s plausible she serves an antagonistic role but it’s not in keeping with her literal and figurative actions, in relation to the driving plot, so far. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    I predict Gemma actually died, but Severance was a convenient way for Lumon to save her. They told mark and his family that she died, and only allowed Gemma’s innie to exist on the severed floor. I also predict that she is a part of the group of people “who don’t leave.”This would explain why Mark never saw Gemma again and reveal that Lumon exploits/enslaves its employees. This would make it difficult for Mark and Gemma to continue their relationship, and in turn make it possible for Helly and Mark to be together

    I think Helly and Ms. Cobel are working together in some way. When Helly attempted suicide, the board didn’t know. It’s clear Outie Hellena knew, otherwise she wouldn’t have worn the makeup around her neck. But the board didn’t know that Hellie attempted suicide, this is evidenced by their liaison communicating it to Cobel on their behalf right before they fired her. This is incredibly suspicious given her status in the organization.
    They must be in cahoots somehow. At least that’s my theory.

I agree that Helly is the most complicated of the characters in terms of what happens next. I do like your theories. You really saw Helly's determination when Mrs. Cobel says "I am going to make your friends suffer" and she goes out there with a look of defiance on her face. It shows her determination as you note - but she is an engma for sure

    in the first episode when mark bumped into outie helly in the parking lot she was holding white roses. White roses signify purity, youthfulness, innocence, young love, eternal loyalty and new beginnings, and are most often popular choices for weddings and romantic occasions. This could just signify her eternal loyalty to the company but she could also be romantically involved with someone at lumon.

    • @Dokkobo
      @Dokkobo 6 месяцев назад +1

      They were given to her by Mr. Milchek after her first day ended. All the meanings make sense when applied to how he sees Lumon and the Eagan family. It’s a clever thought, but I think it’s unlikely she has a romantic fling as there was no implication of such at the Galla hosted at Lumon in the last episode. She gives the vibe of an independent company woman with no time for romance or friends. Innie Helly also gave off those vibes but without the burden of knowing her position, which is why I think she was able to fall for Mark.

    Okay, my deal is, who were they planning to kill off if Petey hadn’t run off? MDR only has 4 people in the Kier Lumon office, and the Wichita office (according to the Lexington Letter). Helly and the Eagan’s had been planning this big event / PR stunt beforehand - so how were they planning to get her into MDR before even realizing Petey was reintegrated?
    Helly told herself, “We all have to do things we don’t want to do.” & I took that to mean - she didn’t want to do any of this either. She didn’t dutifully recite everything Eagan at bedtime “sorry dad”. Helly didn’t even know Kier’s favorite breakfast, but Milchick did. 🤔 I think Cobel hated Helly because she would take over Lumon and wasn’t even as “devoted.” And basically made the call to indoctrinate her properly.

    I feel like you nailed the reason why Irving - not Helly - decided to get severed: he had been researching ways to expose Lumon and decided the best way to find evidence was to enter the belly of the beast, except he didn't predict that like most innie/outie relationships we've seen, Irving's innie is a Lumon devotee. It seems like every outie either is (in Helly's case on her videos) or would be extremely disappointed with their innie's behavior, and vice versa.

    Numbers to Colors to Pixels to Image, put it in AI, tried different mathmatical equations, using AI to upscale the weird images that would pop out.
    Almost nothing produced anything promising, except:
    The numbers on the screen can be converted to this equation: "UAE=KI?" Now what the hell that is supposed to mean, I have no idea.

    Always great to get more theories and perspectives on the show.
    I'm somewhat hoping season 2 would open with the events of season 1 from outtie Helly's perspective. That way they could explain some of her reasons for doing what she did (why get the procedure done instead of just lying about it? was the choice for MDR accidental or purposeful? why did she cover up her innies suicide attempt?) to both flesh out that part of her character and to set her up as an outside force for the rest of the season.

    It'd be really interesting to see Helena get reintegrated and end up as kind of a Jekyl and Hyde character, actively working against herself while struggling with both sets of memories.

    Don’t know how I’ve missed your new videos about Severance - too many subscriptions, perhaps. But now I’m going to have to go back through all of them!
    I honestly have no idea how they’ll deal with Helly in season two. I feel like she HAS to go back in because I can’t see the show working without the "team" being together. Given that each of the four innies has had a bit of outside revelation, it doesn’t seem like they’ll single out Helly to be the only one to not go back inside.
    My guess is that we may discover that there’s some sort of "reset" built into the whole Severance program. It could be related to what’s in the control room and the programming that runs it all, or it could be a feature of the microchips embedded in their brains. It just seems like that’s the only way to get back to any sort of a status quo with the team, other than breaking them up and not allowing them to see each other again. The catalyst for change in season two could be Mark’s sister, who is now aware of what’s happening (to some extent). She could be the one to uncover more secrets and figure out how to get the innies to communicate with the outies. Maybe.
    I just want to see season two get finished. Seems like all the news about it was about the behind-the-scenes drama and delays and the like.

    I really think that because of her upbringing as an elite person, her innie was born with self-worth, because Outtie Helly has been told all her life how much she is worth as Eagan's successor, her innie would not take easy to the dehumanization that the others and herself were passing by. Having never been in a working class setting which makes her brain core even more uncomfortable with everything, but as an advantage she is probably the best at doing the personality fusion because her outtie is knowledgeable about the internal situation, her innie is just a development of her character in relation to her external self, so the main thing I'm saying is that it doesn't necessarily matter if Hellena Eagan has a deeper personality because her depth is already being developed in her innie, she just needs to merge the two personalities because you will then fully understand both concepts of her as an elite class person and her perspective as a working class person, Hellena Eagan is possibly the strongest ally the group has right now.

    I think maybe Lumen has a monopoly on the food and water market as well as other resources. Large companies usually have many products under other names. P&G for example. And Lumen may be the Blackrock of this universe. Devon said they have their hands in a lot of pies and they had to be careful who they told about what is happening. I’m guessing that maybe food prices are possibly high because of their monopoly. If food prices are high for me and feeding 6-10 people at a dinner party was too expensive, but I wanted to still get together, then I would have a food free party too. Blackrock and Bill gates have their investments/money in a lot of pies too, so that’s why I’m comparing the two. The food outside seems sad and lacking just like the environment, but inside there is an artificial brightness and the food looks so dreamy. And Helly even states that the eggs were surprisingly really good and Mark says that they are coveted…. Food seems to be a reward a lot of the time, but why?

    Here's the thing... why Sever Helly at all? If this is really about showing the public that Lumon isn't afraid of the process, then why not just lie and say she underwent Severance? Lumon isn't above lying and clearly Severed work is clandestine enough where no one would ever be able to verify it. Logically, there has to be some reason to actually Sever her that isn't just about PR.

    I think that obviously reintegration is a checkovs gun, theres going to be another main character to go through it like Petey but successfully before the show ends.
    I dont have any evidence except that i think it would make thematic sense but i think its going to be Helly

    Why did she have to get severed to go down there in the first place? They could just say she was severed as PR and then she could play out her true intentions while on the severed floor. Unless, that is, it was out of her control.

    I think you're right about Helly being in MDR for more than the obvious, but I don't think they would tell her the truth after being severed because with a blank slate, the severed can become unpredictable and as their boss with limited knowledge she would become unable to control.
    Still, I think you're on to something.
    More sinister thought, I could see before being severed, Helly helped the capturing of Gemma, innie Mark finds out about this and it fractures his relationship with innie Helly.

    I think Gemma isn't completely fine. Probably lost her memory after the accident or got other damage that won't allow her to return to normal life. Something like that. So Season 2 might reveal some truth about what happened to her but won't bring it back to normal life.
