    Very interesting to see people from other countries view on American Slavery. The brutality of it all. And...despite how some people were outraged a white director in Tarentino would show and film what is in this film, I believe he got as close as you could come to showing what slavery was really like.
    Also wish both Leo and Christoph could have won the award for best supporting actors :(

      Now if you think this is bad, imagine this being the mildest form of slavery, what romans did to their slaves and chinese did to other chinese and the conquered tribes was multiple times worse, what arabs did to other middle-eastern tribes, mediterranean slavs and sub-saharan africans was even worse than that by several orders of magnitude. Or if you want to go even further go back to before recorded history and tribal warfare would've had unimaginably worse conditions for captured people than what even the arabs put their slaves through. We are weird species for sure, further we go milder our behavior becomes. Then imagining that if modern technology would completely fail us in case of sun deciding to go crazy or some other similar case, we would revert back into this eventually.

    • @annaclarafenyo8185
      @annaclarafenyo8185 2 года назад +37

      @@kookoo9235 American slavery was much much worse than other forms of slavery. The Arabs, and Chinese viewed slaves as human beings, not barnyard animals, and didn't exploit them for profit.

    • @annaclarafenyo8185
      @annaclarafenyo8185 2 года назад +18

      @@kookoo9235 This is completely backwards. The further back you go in time, the milder the conditions for slaves were, and in prehistoric times, the concept of 'slave' would make no sense. War captives would, if not killed, eventually be incorporated into the tribe, as Native Americans incorporated white captives. Your education is lacking.

    • @zanderhandler129
      @zanderhandler129 2 года назад +8

      @@annaclarafenyo8185 Your comment didn't sound right to me, so I did some research. While you seem to be correct on the viewing of slaves as people (although I did find an ancient Greek source that describes slaves as property that breaths), you are incorrect on your points of exploitation and worsening conditions. One of the most well documented sources of ancient slavery can be found in the spartan slaves (known as helots), who were decimated on a yearly basis by their spartan owners. The Spartans even had a ritual where they would symbolically "declare war" on the Helots every autumn to religiously justify there poor treatment. On a more semi-modern note, the Chinese also have a habit of expending their slaves on public works projects in a similar manner to the panama canal, and even had their own small version of the triangular trade. Also of note is that (in practice) slavery in china might possible be the longest lasting organized human trafficking network in history, since it formally began circa 200 BC, and only ended in 1910. Also, I would like to see your source on the prehistoric cultures having no slavery, because (as the term PRE-historic implies) we have no evidence to support any conclusions on slave culture in that period. Given that our earliest known sources have references to slave cultures in Sumer, and they describe them with some normalcy, we can however assume that the practice of slavery was born long before the historic period.
      My sources:
      Helots: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helots
      Chinese: The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery (page 5 if you want to skip the boring stuff)
      Pre-History info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_antiquity

    • @annaclarafenyo8185
      @annaclarafenyo8185 2 года назад +8

      @@zanderhandler129 Yes, I was being too telegraphic, I agree with your conclusions. Prehistoric slavery might have existed, it might not, the most up to date analysis, I think is in the wonderful new Graeber book "The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity". There are so many different kinds of prehistoric societies, it is hard to generalize. My point is that American slavery was a crazy different type of slavery which worked for profit, and justified itself with racist ideology that made people subhuman. This is extremely dangerous, compared to other types of slavery. I agree with your details.
      The interesting thing is that the Christian attitude is that slavery (of Christians by other Christians) is unacceptable already since the time of St. Paul. This is what the Epistle to Philemon is about.

      Slavery is not a 'black' thing, those brave spartans conquered a neighbouring city state and made them all slaves so the spartan population could focus on warfare and just to make sure there was no slave uprising the would cull the slave population even 10yrs or so. The Roman Empire made slaves out of every country they invaded and conquered for example gaul (france) germania (germany) and britannia (britain). In the dark ages arab and irish slavers would raid the british & french coast line and empty villages for there slave markets - ST Patrick was one of those taken from britain! The most recent major slave trade in human history certainly was a 'black' thing. I understand the point you're making that slavery has been part of human history for centuries, but it's also true that America was the last major country to end it. We still feel the trickle down effect of it in 2021. It was still illegal in 6 States for mixed couples to marry as recently as 1967 which is just one example of the trickle down effect of slavery. The Spartans, Roman Empire, etc don't have to deal with effects of slavery in their society because they're long gone, we are still feeling the effects. That's the difference.

      The whole point of Tarantino's movies is that there is no symmetry in these situations, and the violence on one group is justified and acceptable, while the exact same indistinguishable violence on another group is not. That's why he takes pains to make sure the violence is symmetric, so that you understand that it's not the violent behavior that is causing the condemnation and abhorrence in the audience, it's only the ideology behind it.

    I'm going to get some hate for this but the Roman Empire did far worst to their slave (gladiators) for more than a thousand years but only american history (250yrs) is condemned.

    • @BigSleepyOx
      @BigSleepyOx 3 года назад +4

      No, it's condemned for Brazilian history too.
      And I'm an American, so I should judge my own country's history. I care more about that than ancient Roman history (which I love, but why would I use ancient Roman history as an excuse not to judge the history of my own country?).

    • @krautgazer

      This analogy makes no sense, it's a fallacy. The Roman Empire does not exist for more than 1000 years, why should we care? The United States still exist and it's the same republic that allowed slavery to happen, so that's why it is condemned. Slavery happened only about 150 years ago, so it's recent enough for us to still see the consequences of it in our modern society. Also, the United States is not the only country where its history of slavery is condemned, I live in Brazil and we talk about the same issue here, and I'm pretty sure it is talked about in a bunch of countries where the slave trade happened before.

      @@krautgazer I'm not American, nor am I a history buff....
      But I'm pretty sure of 3 facts....
      Europeans were the ones taking people by force from Africa and selling them into the slave trade around the world, yes a lot went to Colonial America, but that was because it was in its early stages of colonization and needed lots of cheap labour so the Europeans who were trying to make it their new home would survive.
      And....
      The majority (more than 70%) of Africans taken were sold as slaves in other parts of the world during the 17th and 18th centuries, to many countries that still exist today, which was actually before the United States was even a country.
      And....
      Unfortunately, slavery does Still exist in quite a few countries.
      All as I'm saying is No country, including my own, has a clean history, and racism and prejudice is still rampant EVERYWHERE towards Somebody by Everyone.

      Unfortunately, your statement is demonstrably fallacious becaus the difference is the United States still exists, but the Roman empire does not. The other differences is the Roman empire did not discriminate between race or ethnicity. A majority of their slave trade was by colonies that were conquered by the Romans or by willingly becoming slaves to pay off outstanding debts. Slavery in United States was a primarily race and ethnic based.
