Wow, I only knew first generation diesels on the LIRR, like F-M CPA24-5 C Liners, but I've not ever saw steam in live action. This is a wonderful video when it pours it on at 0:56. The dog on the right between the two men, backed away from the tracks a little in awe at 1:22 and probably in fright as to what was looming into view! Before we went to a family reunion upstate NY, in Aug 2022, my brother in-law who wrote two books on steam locomotives, stopped at the railroad museum called Steamtown in Scranton, PA the day before and I saw a sister unit to this UP 4014, it is UP 4012. It was huge and every bit as big as UP 4014 looks in this video, but in real life, right up to the UP Big Boy 4012, it's a wonderful, beautiful mechanical monstrosity. The main driving wheels are a little taller I am and I'm only 5-5". I loved the Big Boy and was the only thing which was memorable. There were EMD E6 and an EMD F cab unit, and other makes, with a roundhouse, but on top of it all the showcase was the UP 4012 "Big Boy." The only thing I wish they'd do is put a canopy over it at least to keep the elements off of this wonderful piece of equipment. What's just as wonderful as these Big Boys and other restored locomotives, are the incredible and loving efforts of volunteers who "made it happen" to restore the locomotives for future generations; they need to be recognized and saluted for their hard work as well!😊
@@cedude69 i believe they had received a “dragging equipment” alert when they passed a trackside defect detector , but it was quickly determined it was a false alert so they got back on the throttle .
American steam locomotives produce ridiculous amounts of black smoke. Any crew of an English or European locomotive would be fired over such an ugly display of inefficacy. It might be due to the inferior designs of U.S. engines.
there’s nothing wrong with americans engines. black smoke is a indicator of coal not being burned. i’m pretty sure this happens with european engines aswell. All american engines are raw power.
I’m happy I got the chance to sit in the cab of this beauty. It’s really quite an impressive machine.

I believe it stopped and shifted down to "grandma" before resuming the climb. Assisted by a big old diesel electric several cars back.
