If anyone is wondering why Istanbul suddenly disappeared after 1926 and made a come back after 1959, here is a simple explanation. France, the UK, Russia, Italy, Greece and their allies the Serbs, the Arabs and Armenians fiercely attacked the Ottoman Turks between 1914 and 1918 (WWI). Having lost over 3m lives, the Ottoman sultan had to surrender to the Western Powers. As part of his deal with the UK and France, he tried to silence his own people who did not wish to be ruled by western powers. (Yes, Istanbul was occupied by the UK, and the rest of modern Türkiye by Italy, Greece and France). During the occupation period, Turkish families who survived the western powers were eitherkilled or escaped and were forced to leave their homes for rural towns in Anatolia...Eventually, the Turks rose up against their sultan and the western powers (incl those who came from NZ and AUS) under the leadership of Atatürk and declared the Turkish Independence War (1919-1923). Only after 1923, the Turks regained their independence but they also lost millions more lives. Within the old empire's borders an estimated 8 million of Turks lost their lives between 1914 and 1923. This is the main reason why Istanbul's (and other capital cities') population dwindled.
When the new Turkish Republic was finally established in 1923, there were no teachers, no doctors, no architects, no schools, no hospitals, no factories in the country. Many people, mostly children and women had become homeless; unempleyment and hunger were widespread across the country. So, the Turks had to start from scratch. Just as they thought things were getting better, the second world war broke out...
