  • Leopold Stokowski was one of the few great 20th century maestros who lived to a ripe old age and he was still conducting just a few months before he died at the age of 95. Inevitably he had become very frail by then and although he could still give vital and exciting performances in his 90s, there were occasions when his frailty was more in evidence.
One such occasion occurred in April 1973, three days after he'd celebrated his 91st birthday, when he conducted the second half of a London Symphony Orchestra concert in Croydon's Fairfield Hall. The work was Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony and he followed it with three encores. As Easter was approaching, he introduced and conducted his own 'symphonic transcription' of the Chorale "Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn" from Bach's Easter Cantata. Despite his clearly evident frailty, the audience warmly applauded the nonagenarian maestro.
This is being uploaded on Good Friday, 2024, to mark Stokowski's Bach transcription.

Oh, you treasure. The first piece of “serious” music I ever performed was Christ Lag in Todesbanden, with my choir in New Orleans at St Louis Cathedral. I never knew Stokowski had done this. Thank you!❤❤❤
