Also whenever you're are applying for a loan whether it's a car loan or a mortgage do not specify your ethnicity just write other, banks usually charge extra interest on blacks and Latinos.

You don't decide someone's intent based of how it makes you feel haha. So this guy is a racist to his core? Or what he did was racist? As with any license, it's up to the holder to uphold their ethics. You can't sue them because it's their personal judgement in terms of the appraisal. There's not much you can do but complain to the state.
If it benefits them they will keep doing it.....lowballing nonwhite housing appraisals certainly benefits them.

This happened to a black woman who was married to a white man. Their home got low balled the same way! She had to remove photos and such items from her home to make it look like it wasn't a black person living there just so she and her husband could get a fair appraisal! Rocket mortgage just didn't want to acknowledge their practice and become the bad guy. Let's not forget they sent out their independent guy out to appraise the home. Definitely knew what they were doing....

To be fair, Quicken Loans didn’t do the appraisal. A lot of financial companies hire third party providers to do these appraisals. That said, they either need to stop working with racist appraisers or they need to lose business too. They’re part of the problem if they don’t take these complaints seriously enough to actually reform
It's not just quicken loans. There was a similar story about 5-6 years ago. This goes back to redlining in black neighborhoods. There are systemic ways to keep us down.

Disgusting I had the same issue as a buyer. I bought a townhome for 123k. The appraisal came in @116k. Zillow had the property for 130k the Tax County Tax Board had it for 130k too!!! The low appraisal didn't make sense.The reason the appraisal was so low was that the tenant living in the home @ the time was a Black woman. The Seller (white Boomer who lived in another state)wouldn't budge & lower the price for me. I had to come up with the difference on closing day. Thing is a few months later I bought the townhome next to me from the same Boomer. The tenant in there was a White man. Guess what? the appraisal for that one came in at? 150k LMAO Both properties where in terrible shape needing tons of work. The only difference was the 150k property had an extra 50sq ft of space. Y'all this 💩 is real!!!! This never made sense to me till NOW!!! But I always knew something wasn't right. Race was the difference, duh Lesson: Hire Gr¡ngo$ to pose as tenants or owners if you want a high appraisal 🤮

My uncle was selling a beautiful home in CT. He was told he could not stay in the house because if the buyers are white, they will depraise the house. If he was a white seller, it meant he could stay, and mingle with the potential buyer. So sad.
Any good real estate sales person will meet the appraiser and not have the homeowner there. That's how business is done.

My brother works for bank of america he's seen first hand black and Hispanic applications get denied with 700+ credit scores and seen horrible under qualified white applications get approved thats car house or business loans

This happened to me in Tennessee. I refinanced my home. The appraisal came in more than $120K less than expected. My loan officer refused to accept the appraisal and did not charge me for it. When asked why the appraisal was so low, one of the reasons given was that the original loan was a FHA loan. My loan officer didn't understand why that was a factor and was also curious how the appraiser even knew that information. This type of discrimination is real, and it's literally robbing minorities of real wealth.
So when people file a complaint who’s getting charged, who’s getting fined, who is going to jail, what actually happens to these crooked azz people?!. To be honest the fact that we have to tell people to come and file a complaint, shows you how big of a problem this is. Maybe there should be an actual law that will penalize whoever is doing that, which will most likely preventing them from continuing this behavior!. But letting them get away with it, doing absolutely nothing, why would they change their actions?!.
This is so real. I'm a white woman and used to live in Marin County. When I was looking for a place to live, I literally got offered an apartment by some older lady who said "You wouldn't believe who's been looking at this apartment. I'm not a Trump supporter or anything. I'm okay with other ethnicities. I just want everyone here to get along." If that's not an obvious example of someone like me benefiting from white privilege, I don't know what is.

I wish I had. When I researched it online, it seemed like I had to be the actual potential tenant or tenant being discriminated against to file a complaint. I should have looked into it more or called someone.

Most likely Rocket Mortgage was offering a competitive rate. The potential for trouble stems from the fact that lenders (and mortgage brokers) are forced to use an outside AMC (Appraisal Management Company), a 3rd party with its own profit-motive. Guess what happens - the AMC sends out a blast email to appraisers over a wide area and usually takes the lowest bidder, thus enhancing their own bottom line. It's a vicious cycle that got its start when, in 2009, NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (now NY Governor) unilaterally mandated the adoption of the HVCC (Home Valuation Code of Conduct), which forbade loan originators from engaging directly with appraisers. He did this in exchange for not investigating the books of FNMA and FreddieMac. So guess what happened. Lenders adopted the AMC model en masse, and now appraisers only make about 50-60% of the fee billed to the homeowner. The rest goes to the AMC. Rocket Mortgage probably works with several AMC's, each in a "race to the bottom" to get a cheap appraiser to do the job. Which is why I believe this particular case involves sheer incompetence rather than racial bias. Why would any appraiser put their license on the line for absolutely no reason?

The appraiser has to have done this plenty of times before........ I wonder how many of those house the appraiser bought or told someone to buy...
My wife and I have a similar story here in Toronto Canada. We lost over $300,000. In Ontario Canada the governing body to value a property is called MPAC. We contacted them and they told us that Banks, Realtors and Appraiser should not use the information from MPAC to value a property. This is because the information MPAC have is not up to date and is only for the home owner and the municipality.
The person who we spoke to, a Supervisor also told us that he is aware that Realtors, Banks and Appraisers uses the information from MPAC to value properties.
The appraiser used the MPAC info to under appraise the property. Even though the appraiser saw the ravine with all the trees that took hundreds of years to grow. He decided to verify with MPAC if they have the property as backing unto a ravine. The code that the appraiser got was for a property not backing unto a ravine so that is how he valued the property.
When we contacted MPAC the person we spoke to laughed and said, would the appraiser appraise a two storey house as a bungalow just because they got a code for a bungalow?!
The ad for the property said beautiful bungalow backing unto a ravine.
When we realized that this is not correct we contacted the governing body for realtors RECO.
RECO looked on google maps saw the green space and closed the case. When we asked if they contacted MPAC they said no.
In the 60s the home owner adjacent to the property that I purchase had the opportunity to purchase the greenspace that is directly behind my backyard and they did. This information was never updated with MPAC and the realtor did not do their due diligence to verify this.
It is very hard to not feel discrimanted against when all the governing bodies my wife and I contact sticks up for each other.
Check the laws, this reminds me of both the liberals and conservatives agreeing not to pass wage discrimination laws based on race.

I had a contractor give me a quote to install 5 doors and frames he tried to rip me off
at the Home depot the doors & frames cost no more than $350 ... This clown said installed plus material $2500... I laughed in his face, told him to get the fuck outta here. Went to home depot and did the fuckin work myself !!!!!! TRUST NOBODY IN THIS GAME

This is real stuff. Happened to me a few years ago. My home was devalued by over 25k. Had 3 local realtors look at the appraisal and comps. Nice neighborhood...very well maintained...great upgrades..I sold the house 45 days later. It was only on the market for 3 days. Sold for 35k more than that fake appraisal...always know your comps. And don't hesitate to get a second opinion...fyi, I live in California.

So, my loan was denied two days before closing. I have perfect credit, cash for closing and downpayment, no debt except one car payment, and 3 sources of income. Td bank is horrible !!! I think that you should also tell us who the third party appraiser company is as well.
The international couple in another state had the same problem, lowballed the house then the wife removed all the family photos and had her white husband be the only one present for the appraisal. It went up almost three hundred thousand dollars more.

This is wild scary!! But I’ve heard stories like this before including when a black family was trying to sell their house and couldn’t get not one offer!! And their home was in a very popular area in their city...spacious...an awesome single family home...3 bed 2 bath...three other homes in their neighborhood sold in no time!! They took the home off the market for about 7 months...then listed again but removed all photos and some decor items from the home changed a couple of things...and they got an offer within 1 week of listing! Smh...
And what's the intelligent conclusion from that?
There was a real estate program for agents I bought back in the 1990’s. It was mostly about staging a home so it would sell better. The woman stated if the owners were black they should remove all family pictures because people are so racist some wouldn’t buy a black owned home. Pretty sad things haven’t progressed since the 1990’s. 😢
I’m white and got a really shit appraisal that kept me from refinancing. Waited a few months and the next appraisal was $40k higher. So it happens even if you’re white. There’s just some very lazy appraisers out there.
It’s crazy how they don’t wanna see Hispanic or blk ppl make it makes them grind there teeth under there smile
Should be able to sue the pants off that appraisal company.

Wow I'm glad I found this story. My mom just refinanced last year. We noticed that the home values have gone down opposed to when she first bought the home. The neighborhood has Black, White, and Asian neighbors all the homes are big and fancy many buisness professionals live there all $500,000 plus in value. My grandmother who was a real estate agent noticed the value change and questioned it herself. We never thought about it from this angle.
THIS is Why Black people need to be DEMANDING Reparations. It's not about slavery it's about ongoing economic discrimination on a federal and state level and it's systematic and systemic.
The appraiser needs to be fired. I am sure that this is NOT the first time that the appraiser has lowballed someone's home based on their race.

This is outrageous and completely unacceptable. The question is what can we do to stop this? We need to stand up! We need to call out on all of these injustices and boycott all these business and shut them down!
Always get a second and a third opinion from different places. It's nothing new that they want to low-ball you for what you have and flip it into the millions.
Since this is happening all the time, get a white person when you want your home appraised.

I’ve said this was going on For years.
I am married to a blank woman and when we went to look for a house i went by myself to get a lower price and filled out the loan app online to get a lower interest rate. As soon as we went into the bank in person together they wanted to delay the closing for another week. During that time they started calling with the “the underwriter wants more docs” “they are reviewing your credit again, your rate might go up”
When we finally go back to the closing they raised the rate and said we would have to pay points to lower it.
None of this happened for the 3 months i was looking on my own. It was done only after the saw us in person and saw she was black.
Appraisers are supposed to only go by comps. They are supposed to follow very strict government rules. They should lose their license.
I bet she used that’expert voice’ while giving that estimate and would firmly contest she was doing them wrong... firmly

We rented a brand new house for an african family, hired an african property manager to manage the property, we never raise their rent for years, when we decided to sell the property, we were so hurted and disappointed to find out our house was completely destroyed, holes on walls, even the sink have holes. leaking water damage from second floor. We spend almost the rent money to fix this house before we can sell it. We have never had any problem with other ethnic renters, now our property manager have to think twice before renting out anyone's property.
You cannot blame an entire race for one incident.

Agreed!!!! Sorry to agree ... it is the truth. Stop putting your race on mortgage documents. Why should race matter when buying a home. Your income, assets and liabilities only matter.
These appraisers should have their license ripped from them. This is bs that is still allowed to go on. Educate yourselves people before you take anyone’s advice on your investments.
I have a relative in Texas and they are doing the same thing there. Whites are receiving 200K and more than blacks with the same comparable homes for sell.

DL Hugely hipped us to this years ago. I plan to take all my photos down and have a white stand in whenever I'm ready to sale
LOL or get a white friend and his family to pretend they own the home. Just make sure their last name isnt Jefferson, or Washington.
That’s despicable. So sad, they just can’t be seen as the beautiful couple that they are.
Please file a formal complaint and sue and to also have the appraiser looking for another line of work.
