thank you! When I asked the guys at the dealership if they could open our stuck glovebox, they said they couldn't and quoted me $350 to replace it. I opened it with a screwdriver today thanks to you!
Hey, Mike... THANK YOU for creating this video! I was about to get a big hammer and crowbar and go to town on the stuck glovebox of my wife's '08 Honda Odyssey. That is, until I happened upon this video. Your clear and concise instructions made it a breeze in unlatching the locking mechanism. As you showed in the video with your own busted lock, the end of the plastic lever had broken off of mine, too. You mentioned that some folks - instead of buying a new lock - will try drilling a hole in what remains of that plastic lever, then using perhaps a nail or screw to make the lever once again long enough to engage the mechanism that ultimately releases the latch. So I gave that method a try. I figured if I mess it up and ruin the entire lock, I was going to have to buy a new one anyway. So I drilled a small diameter hole deep enough to accept a 1¼" cotter pin, while still leaving maybe ⅜" exposed. That is just long enough so that the rounded end of the cotter pin rests on top of the lever that gets pushed down when one wants to release the latch to open the glovebox. Well what-do-ya-know... it worked! And good as new, too! So thanks for saving me the expense of buying a new lock. But mostly, thanks again for showing me how to open the darn thing in the first place! No hammer 'n crowbar needed.
It’s 2024 and I’m glad you made this video! It also reminds me that glove boxes won’t keep my valuable stuff really safe so locking it is likely a waste of time. Very informative video! Thanks for making it!!!
Thanks! Worked like a charm! It turned out that the two screws that hold the latch mechanism were several turns too loose and tightening everything back up was all that was needed. No broken parts to repair/replace once I opened up the glovebox.
Brilliant! Thank you very much Michael. One comment...I couldn't open mine to save my soul until I first locked the glove box. Try this if you are having problems. -Ed
Good call. Spent 30 mins trying to get the box on a 2008 CRV by removing bolts, and trying to squeeze in to move the latch. Got frustrated. Quick search and it's opened. Thanks again.
Thanks Mike for this very helpful video. My 2008 Odyssey had the same problem. I opened it with a screwdriver as you described and luckily the little plastic "arm" that had broken off was still laying in the lock. So I removed the plastic handle that you pull on to open the glovebox by removing the long metal pin (that has a small spring on it), it just slides out. Once separated I crazy-glued the small piece of broken plastic "arm" back on, and then reinforced it all around the outside with 2-part epoxy and let it dry for 24 hours. Added a little more grease to all the sliding bits for good measure, reassembled and reinstalled the lock, and it's working fine again. This method might work for those who can find the little plastic arm that breaks off. If not, there is another RUclips video that shows how to install a nail to replace the broken plastic arm. Sure beats spending lots of $$$ at the dealership for a new one!
Thanks, Mike! Took patience and several tries - and watching the whole video was important, so I could see which direction pushing the screwdriver moved the latch. Finally worked!
Mike, this is so AWESOME!!!! Thank your for the detailed video and verbal explanation. It worked for us and I was able to get all the CDs I have had stored in the glovebox before we sold the car!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!
@@georgecarlile652 "Great advice for thieves" is what I thought as well, George. But once I was able to open my stuck glove box (as this video shows how to do), I then removed the locking mechanism. After studying how it works, I learned that the brilliant engineer who designed this made it so that, if the glovebox is locked with the key, then the lever that releases the latch gets moved away from the latch pin that otherwise would push down on the latch. So the way this video shows how to open a stuck glovebox won't work if the glovebox was actually locked. (I don't recall if it was mentioned in the video that the lock has to be in the "unlocked" position first in order to unlatch the glovebox using the tiny screwdriver). Anyway, just my two cents. Take care.
Thank you for this, I have Honda Odyssey 2002 and the globe box wont open for years! I am about to break it to get a valuable item I put there before selling the vehicle. Until, i stumble on your video tutorial. Easy Fixed! Huge Thanks again for making this tutorial.
This works..!! Just opened my glove box that been stuck for a couple years to look for AA batteries for my wireless Nintendo switch controller that died mid game LOL. There were no AA batteries but I did find some other really cool things that had been forgotten/lost !!
Thank you so much! My Ipad was stuck in the glovebox and I tried to open it for almost an hour but I couldn't. Your video is very helpful, I finally got it out even though I cracked my screen, but im really glad that it worked, thank you again.
Wow! Thanks for the video. I had a friend's 2008 Odyssey glove box stuck and I inserted the small screwdriver right where you said and it opened. I removed the latch with a mini Philips loosening two screws then carefully drilled a very small hole in the mechanism where the tang broke off and inserted a small screw which took the place of the tang. Worked like a charm and probably better then before.
We have the same screwdriver and this has bugged us for months.. even printed out a new insurance card and registration for just in case 😆 in about a minute got the thing open! Found a couple of tablets we’d been missing. Now for the new latch. Thanks for the easy fix man!
Thank you, Michael, it worked. Yes, it's tricky to get the small screwdriver into the very small space above that lever. A suggestion: once the door is open remove the latch assembly and check the plastic tip the handle operates. If it is unbroken, spray the latch mechanisms lightly with WD-40, then put everything back. Of course, if that plastic tip is broken it will have to be replaced as suggested.
I just bought a 2006 Honda Odyssey and the glove box is stuck. I watched this video 5 times. Each time I go back out in the garage to re-try. It is still stuck. I think I am making things worse by trying so many times, and each time trying harder. Any other tips? Thank you for this video, looks like it helped a lot of people!
Hi Jo! Sorry you're having such trouble. The spot you're aiming for is very small. For me I have to have me phone with me to see exactly where I need to put the small screwdriver. That's the other thing, the screwdriver needs to be fairly small. Best of luck!
Great video Mike! Why didn't I check RUclips sooner? Good thing an officer didn't pull me over and ask for my insurance, title, registration, etc. over the last several months! Now, hopefully Gorilla glue will work. If not I will simply empty everything into the stowage compartment under front passenger seat.
Thanks for the great video! Now I also see what part I need to order. I should have watched this before I took half the dash apart and skinned three knuckles for nothing - LOL!
Thanks so much. It worked great. You can buy a replacement lock mechanism on Amazon for about $22, but I tried drilling the small hole and inserting a small nail. It works for now, but I'm not sure how long it will last. It's nice that I can try that, and if it doesn't work I can alw.ay buy the replacement.
WOW!! my glove box has been locked for months and I had to replace the alternator so I needed the radio code in the glove box to reset the radio and navigation and my back up cameras.
We had about the same thing happen on the hatch just behind the front seats we stored jumper cables and umbrellas in. Finally got it open and I used a multi tool to saw the latch off so it wouldn’t happen again. Honda issue with mechanisms breaking I guess 😆
Thank u for showing what I’m trying to hit. I’m about to lose my mind trying to get mine open. It’s a 09 Honda CR-V but it looks like the same latch. I have been hitting that metal latch but it still won’t open… I’ll keep trying

How did you get the lock out after removing the screws? Did you have the cover of the glove box off?
Once you undo the screws, the lock assembly should basically "fall out" of the front of the glovebox. You do not have to remove the entire cover.
