When the gentleman mentioned leaning towards China, he meant it in terms of policy. As a nation that believes in collaborating with both China and India, we recognize the importance of balancing our relationships with both countries.
The harbor deal, which was done by Rajapaksa and Wickramasinghe, did not sit well with the public as it involved taking loans and selling the port back to China. This has contributed to widespread dissatisfaction, leading people to feel frustrated with what they perceive as corrupt practices.

If not India, China would have stepped in seamlessly to help SL. Why do you think IMF continues to release trenches of funding despite SL not fully fullfilling IMF conditions? Because SL can always turn to China for help. Why would China help? Because they want to surround India and to enhance their dominance in Indian ocean.

A small detail is incomplete for your story. I have to go into history to start this. When Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, the majority of Sri Lankans did not feel its value. I see the reason for that is the lack of educational and political literacy of the majority of the people. I will not go into an analysis of this further but needless to say, it is the main factor in its existence as a colony. In any case, the British handed over this freedom to the people of the Valav clan (thieves Valav clan) in our country. After that, although they appeared as two parties, it was actually a power exchange between two factions. Due to the opposition and other reasons, a youth uprising occurred for the first time in 1971. It happened with the support of JVP. But it was suppressed by the government. Similarly, in 1976, the Tamil people also thought like this and started a rebellion. But it was not suppressed at once and it showed terrorist characteristics as soon as it started. Forgot to say something else. In 1948, our country's economy was second only to Japan. Later, in the 70s, the first borrowing took place and then the borrowing took place until 2024. After 77 we were introduced to the open economy and the manufacturing economy of our country gradually collapsed and the cost of imports rose rapidly. Although building buildings in the country looks like progress, it is not real progress. Somehow the terrorist riots and other troubles continued till 2009. Also, in the meantime, excessive commissions and thefts took place from the loans taken by all the politicians and from the development activities. Although the war on terror ended in 2009, this theft continued. In 2022, it exploded because of the sugar tax fraud, the decrease in food production due to the use of chemical fertilizers and the economic collapse due to the Covid epidemic. Even though that government was overthrown, we could not form a new government according to the referendum. We made it successful in 2024. But I still think that the political literacy of the majority of the public is very low. However, let's move forward and try to achieve a developed country by adopting a governance system like the Nordic model. We will be able to achieve it under Anura Kumara.

So, officially, Sri Lanka is a nonaligned, socialist, and democratic sovereignty. If someone tries to push Sri Lanka away from those values, that’s a threat to the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. This is what India, Western nations, and all other countries need to understand when dealing with Sri Lanka, because if they try to instill their own ideologies and values, it might go against the very essence of Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.

Firstly, it is important to clarify that AKD joined the JVP in 1995. He has no criminal records or allegations against him, making him a clean and corruption-free leader. Before entering politics, he was a mathematics teacher and provided free tutoring to underprivileged children. There are few leaders as down-to-earth and caring for the country as AKD, which is why he is highly respected.
Secondly, while it has been mentioned that the JVP was heavily involved in violence in the past, this is not entirely accurate. During that period, President J.R. Jayawardene and his party, the United National Party (UNP), were responsible for many of the actions attributed to the JVP. Due to the lack of social media at the time, only locals are aware of the true events.
Thirdly, as I mentioned earlier, to understand the real situation, it is essential to consult local journalists rather than Indian journalists. Indian media often disseminates misinformation based on assumptions rather than facts, which negatively affects our country. True journalists should not be biased.
I hope you understand my point. Thank you, Melissa Chan and Alex Forrest, for reading the comments section. I believe it helps to clarify things. Cheers!

I think Sri Lanka has given a lesson to the IMF of how to handle developed and developing nations.
Monetary policies of IMF applied to developed countries cannot be applicable to developing countries like Sri Lanka where the country has 80 % of its population rural and maintained its status as a welfare state for the last 75 years.
Developed countries are adaptable for its personal high tax systems and people enjoy high standards of living whereas Sri Lankan case is vice versa so sudden policy changes of IMF shocked the people and took majority below the poverty line.
This made a cumulative angry towards the government and used their voting power to change the capitalist system.
So IMF must learn lessons from this and make tailored policies that could fit to the developing countries like Sri Lanka.

If DW News had asked Sri Lankans to talk about Sri Lanka, the report would have been balanced in facts and opinions. Indian media and journalists are trying to paint a different image of AKD, in my opinion, given that some agreements with Indian business tycoons will be reviewed under AKD's government. I noticed this twist among all Indian media (people and establishments) when this was discussed during the election campaign. Given that Sri Lanka is a Democratic Socialist Republic, socialism still has a significant role. It has not been met even at its minimum standards during the past regimes, mainly due to nepotism, politicisation and deep-rooted corruption led by former politicians and officials. AKD will set an example from the top. This is the first time we have a qualified, non-elite president with no strings attached.

While its early leftist influences remain, the party has broadened its appeal to a wider audience, including the middle class and youth. Sri Lanka has deep negative karma for mistreating the most hard working Tamil Tea Plantation community who bring foreign revenue for SL for 200 years. AKD's journey has not been smooth like that of other political leaders in our history. His victory was hard-fought, especially since he lacked significant media support and power as other candidates. Instead, much of his campaign was driven by the people, who voluntarily rallied behind him upon recognizing his genuine commitment to end the corruption that has plagued the country for 75 years and to drive Sei Lanka to a better place.
Throughout his political career, AKD has remained untainted by accusations of corruption. Rather, he has consistently spoken out, shedding light on the corrupt practices within the political system that contributed to the country’s bankruptcy. His integrity and focus on exposing these issues have made him a beacon of hope for many.
However, I am uncertain about the true agenda behind this discussion. We have finally found a promising leader-one who is wise, with a clear vision for reforming the nation. For an interview of this nature, it would be prudent to include a non-biased Sri Lankan political analyst as well. AKD has just been appointed, and we have faith that he will steer the country in the right direction.

Point on Sri Lanka's Economic Crisis and Election Context
Argument Made: The focus is on the 2022 economic crisis and the election, highlighting discontent and popular support for Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD).
Counter-Argument: While it's true the 2022 crisis was pivotal, oversimplifying AKD’s rise as purely a reaction to economic woes ignores the underlying systemic issues in Sri Lanka’s politics. His long-standing political activism, anti-corruption platform, and alternative vision for governance have resonated beyond just the economic crisis.
Point on Foreign Relations with China and India
Argument Made: AKD must manage Sri Lanka’s relations carefully with both India and China due to strategic and financial interests.
Counter-Argument: While relations with China and India are critical, focusing solely on these powers overlooks Sri Lanka’s potential to strengthen ties with other nations, such as Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN countries. Diversifying alliances can help reduce over-reliance on either India or China, giving Sri Lanka more flexibility in negotiating better terms for investments and development.
Point on Austerity and IMF Measures
Argument Made: Austerity measures imposed by the IMF have led to hardships, with uncertainty on whether AKD can renegotiate these terms.
Counter-Argument: While renegotiating IMF terms is challenging, it’s worth noting that AKD has the potential to diversify Sri Lanka’s economic model. By focusing on local industries, agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy, he can reduce dependency on external loans and stimulate the domestic economy, providing a more sustainable solution without heavily relying on IMF adjustments.
Point on AKD’s Political Background and Marxism
Argument Made: There’s confusion about whether AKD is a Marxist, with some claiming he’s moved toward a more centrist position.
Counter-Argument: The debate on whether AKD is a Marxist often misses the point. His policies are now pragmatically focused on anti-corruption, transparency, and improving governance rather than strictly adhering to Marxist ideology. This nuanced position can attract broader support, as his focus is on policies that benefit the general population, irrespective of ideological labels.
Point on Corruption and Anti-Corruption Agenda
Argument Made: Corruption is a key issue in Sri Lankan politics, and AKD’s anti-corruption stance gives him an edge in this election.
Counter-Argument: Anti-corruption efforts alone won’t be enough to transform the political culture. Institutional reforms, judicial independence, and transparency mechanisms must also be established to ensure long-term accountability. The success of AKD’s anti-corruption agenda will depend on how deeply he can implement these systemic changes, which need time and political will.
Point on Lack of Foreign Policy Experience
Argument Made: AKD lacks foreign policy experience, which could hamper his ability to manage international relations.
Counter-Argument: While AKD may not have extensive foreign policy experience, many successful leaders grow into this role by surrounding themselves with experienced advisors and focusing on national interests. AKD’s fresh perspective on foreign policy could allow Sri Lanka to rethink its approach to international partnerships, prioritizing Sri Lankan sovereignty and development over indebtedness to foreign powers.

Please don't judge based on Indian journalists. They got paid by the powerful Indian investors, who don't like the NPP government because as soon as Sri Lanka starts to grow, that will directly impact their revenue coming from Sri Lanka.

Our President will and certainly will take this economically ruined country forward within the next five years. Every eligible voter in Sri Lanka should vote for AKD and his party. Democratic government's in the past have ruined the economy. AKD and his party will take this country forward in every aspect. No doubt.

India is trying hard to label Sri Lanka's new president as a Marxist. If you need to know about Sri Lanka, ask the facts from a Sri Lankan. President Anura Kumara is a center-left leader.

I am a Sri Lankan who has worked in International Development for more than 30 years, including in the rural areas of Sri Lanka. I have seen our country slide into deep corruption and impunity, more so since JR became president. The Rajapakses ruined the country and amassed wealth that is stashed away outside in Sri Lanka. Even the victory of the civil war is no victory when civilians were murdered in the final battle. The rules of war were broken throughout the nearly 30 years of conflict. All successive presidents made the country poorer, while the ruling elite grew richer. As an educated and hardworking citizen and single mother, I finally decided to leave the country. I returned as a Development advisor from time to time, and in 2018, decided for good that I would stop altogether as the corruption in development projects became unbearable. It was distressing that in my generation, the country had landed into the lower ranks of the world corruption index. AKD is our only hope and as he rightly says, he has no magic wand. The country will have to go through a rough time to get to better times. And all clear thinking citizens will have to support the president. Moreover, after decades of violence, SL is a country where impunity reigns, and disappearing outspoken people became normal. Cleaning up all the dirt that has been piled up will not be easy. I think this programme should have Sri Lankans to give their opinions...not people who are non nationals giving their opinions.
