A small detail is incomplete for your story. I have to go into history to start this. When Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, the majority of Sri Lankans did not feel its value. I see the reason for that is the lack of educational and political literacy of the majority of the people. I will not go into an analysis of this further but needless to say, it is the main factor in its existence as a colony. In any case, the British handed over this freedom to the people of the Valav clan (thieves Valav clan) in our country. After that, although they appeared as two parties, it was actually a power exchange between two factions. Due to the opposition and other reasons, a youth uprising occurred for the first time in 1971. It happened with the support of JVP. But it was suppressed by the government. Similarly, in 1976, the Tamil people also thought like this and started a rebellion. But it was not suppressed at once and it showed terrorist characteristics as soon as it started. Forgot to say something else. In 1948, our country's economy was second only to Japan. Later, in the 70s, the first borrowing took place and then the borrowing took place until 2024. After 77 we were introduced to the open economy and the manufacturing economy of our country gradually collapsed and the cost of imports rose rapidly. Although building buildings in the country looks like progress, it is not real progress. Somehow the terrorist riots and other troubles continued till 2009. Also, in the meantime, excessive commissions and thefts took place from the loans taken by all the politicians and from the development activities. Although the war on terror ended in 2009, this theft continued. In 2022, it exploded because of the sugar tax fraud, the decrease in food production due to the use of chemical fertilizers and the economic collapse due to the Covid epidemic. Even though that government was overthrown, we could not form a new government according to the referendum. We made it successful in 2024. But I still think that the political literacy of the majority of the public is very low. However, let's move forward and try to achieve a developed country by adopting a governance system like the Nordic model. We will be able to achieve it under Anura Kumara.

Very true. Other foregin media outlets also mention he wins because of the second preferential vote. Which is not correct. You see the slight misinformation being released.
Sri Lanka is nonaligned, as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and it is both socialist and democratic according to the constitution (as the name of the country suggests, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka). So, officially, Sri Lanka is a nonaligned, socialist, and democratic sovereignty. If someone tries to push Sri Lanka away from those values, that’s a threat to the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. This is what India, Western nations, and all other countries need to understand when dealing with Sri Lanka, because if they try to instill their own ideologies and values, it might go against the very essence of Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.
Firstly, it is important to clarify that AKD joined the JVP in 1995. He has no criminal records or allegations against him, making him a clean and corruption-free leader. Before entering politics, he was a mathematics teacher and provided free tutoring to underprivileged children. There are few leaders as down-to-earth and caring for the country as AKD, which is why he is highly respected. Secondly, while it has been mentioned that the JVP was heavily involved in violence in the past, this is not entirely accurate. During that period, President J.R. Jayawardene and his party, the United National Party (UNP), were responsible for many of the actions attributed to the JVP. Due to the lack of social media at the time, only locals are aware of the true events. Thirdly, as I mentioned earlier, to understand the real situation, it is essential to consult local journalists rather than Indian journalists. Indian media often disseminates misinformation based on assumptions rather than facts, which negatively affects our country. True journalists should not be biased. I hope you understand my point. Thank you, Melissa Chan and Alex Forrest, for reading the comments section. I believe it helps to clarify things. Cheers!
President Anura is not a Marxists. Dont ask Indians about Sri Lanka. This is what the western media gets wrong all the time. it is ridiculous DW is asking Indians about Sri Lanka, if you don't have a reporter over there, you may interview citizens or University staff members online or some Sri Lankans living in Germany
As an Indian, I find it puzzling that DW interviews a journalist ( who generally is quite ignorant and extremely biased)in India and a pro Pakistani “scholar “ in US. I am sure there are enough Sri Lankans who can offer opinions.
Why are you calling a country that defeated terrorism battling for 30 years , still achieved nearly 100% literacy, free healthcare and free education for all ! It’s a success story and an example for rest of that region
I think Sri Lanka has given a lesson to the IMF of how to handle developed and developing nations. Monetary policies of IMF applied to developed countries cannot be applicable to developing countries like Sri Lanka where the country has 80 % of its population rural and maintained its status as a welfare state for the last 75 years. Developed countries are adaptable for its personal high tax systems and people enjoy high standards of living whereas Sri Lankan case is vice versa so sudden policy changes of IMF shocked the people and took majority below the poverty line. This made a cumulative angry towards the government and used their voting power to change the capitalist system. So IMF must learn lessons from this and make tailored policies that could fit to the developing countries like Sri Lanka.
It is really disappointing that you can't include at least one person from Sri Lanka on the discussion panel to address matters concerning the country. It seems you don't care about the opinion of the Sri Lankan side. This is truly ignorant media behavior
If DW News had asked Sri Lankans to talk about Sri Lanka, the report would have been balanced in facts and opinions. Indian media and journalists are trying to paint a different image of AKD, in my opinion, given that some agreements with Indian business tycoons will be reviewed under AKD's government. I noticed this twist among all Indian media (people and establishments) when this was discussed during the election campaign. Given that Sri Lanka is a Democratic Socialist Republic, socialism still has a significant role. It has not been met even at its minimum standards during the past regimes, mainly due to nepotism, politicisation and deep-rooted corruption led by former politicians and officials. AKD will set an example from the top. This is the first time we have a qualified, non-elite president with no strings attached.
I strongly believe number one priority should be stopping corruption I’m sure this will save at least 25 to 50% of money which can be easily used for developments As you know corruption is a chain. Starts from the top to bottom . Central bank once said only 20% of the loans were properly invested for projects Balance has no proper record

It’s surprising that you’ve chosen to dedicate an entire hour-long segment to a country without featuring a single expert from that country. This approach reflects a superficial understanding of the subject and is emblematic of lazy journalism. If your aim is to provide meaningful, insightful coverage, it’s essential to include voices and perspectives from those who truly understand the context. I would urge you to do better and elevate the quality of your work.

The JVP, once rooted in Marxist-Leninist ideology, has evolved into a more progressive and democratic movement, focusing on social justice, anti-corruption, and good governance. While its early leftist influences remain, the party has broadened its appeal to a wider audience, including the middle class and youth. Recently, the emergence of the NNP, a new group linked to the JVP, signals further ideological shifts and diversification within the party, reflecting its adaptation to Sri Lanka’s changing political landscape and positioning itself as a modern force in national politics.
As a young Sri Lankan, I want to emphasize that Ranil Wickremesinghe's economic policies were not the core issue. His actions to suppress the 'Aragalaya' movement extinguished our aspirations for a better government. While he implemented economic reforms, these measures primarily served to stabilize the old, corrupt political elite that the public rejected during the 'Aragalaya' protests.
I dont know how one could say millions and millions are in poverty ? Have you visited Sri Lanka ? Also come when there is a long weekend holiday and go round the country to see how many thousands go on pleasure holiday trips around the country. I'm not saying there aren't poor but if you travel in other parts of South Asia and compare then I have a question. Also Sri Lankan love if they get everything FREE because here education is free, health care is free so they may want food also free ?? I THINK YOU ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT REALITY
"Marxist or Not" is not the issue, there were 3 presidents called Sirisena, Gotabaya and Ranil came with "stop corruption" theme, prior to current President, . Sirisena government was more corrupt than any others plus took $12.65 billion loans in 4 years adding a record to Sri Lanka loan history.. Gotabaya was the useless leader ever, did not take loans but failed to do anything . The country must have a productive economy and the start should be a strict agriculture reforms with essential productions as we had in 1970 to 1977..
I am a Sri Lankan, this is a huge change , from our political infrastructure, and we now have a President that understands the grass root problems , he needs time..He has inherited a huge challenge, but hopefully he overcomes this .
My entire family has voted for AKD! These are 7 votes. We are tamils. Till now I was unable to understand a single word of the President. If he would speak even a single word in Tamil. It would bring trust on him. Even Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sajith Premedasa did it.
Sri Lanka is no one's pet, it is a sovereign nation and must be able to make its own decisions when it suits. The world has enough resources to feed eight billion people, and there is no need to control one another in a bid to make their share bigger than it already is. Obviously, India would have preferred to have agents like former de facto RW in office, but let's not forget that Sri Lanka needs to stay steadfast on her own journey and not get caught up in the geopolitical games of bigger powers at the cost of 22 million innocent people. AKD loves his people, and he cannot be bribed, unlike other secret agents, which of course hurts India significantly. But, sorry - the world does not revolve around India or anyone else. Let’s face reality. "Sri Lanka was reborn on the 22nd of September, 2024!"
Sri Lanka has a history of mistreating the Tamil Tea Plantation workers who contribute to SL economy since 1890. Tamil Tea plantation workers treated as stateless, not included in the main stream community, denied ownership of land/house they live for 200 years by successive governments since independence. Sri Lanka has deep negative karma for mistreating the most hard working Tamil Tea Plantation community who bring foreign revenue for SL for 200 years. I strongly believe this deep dark negative approach by the majority community has brought SL to fall to deep spot economically. SL has long long way to go even to crawl economically.
So sad that there's much hypocrisy when this subject is brought up. People talk about all kinds if "rights" of everyone else except the legitimate RIGHTS of these Tamil people who are key contributors to our economy.
India is trying hard to label Sri Lanka's new president as a Marxist. If you need to know about Sri Lanka, ask the facts from a Sri Lankan. President Anura Kumara is a center-left leader.
As a Sri Lankan, I find it frustrating that some Western media outlets are quick to label Anura Kumara Dissanayake as a Marxist without fully understanding the context or his approach. While he may have roots in leftist politics, his policies and vision today are far from being strictly Marxist. He has shown a pragmatic, balanced approach to solving the real issues that Sri Lanka faces-whether it's economic recovery, social justice, or political reform. Over time, through his work and the tangible changes he brings to the country, the entire world will see that Anura Kumara is not bound by rigid ideology. He is focused on the progress and well-being of the Sri Lankan people, not on promoting any particular "ism." Sri Lanka needs a leader who will address the needs of its citizens in a practical, forward-thinking way, and Anura Kumara is capable of doing just that. Let us give him the chance to prove through his actions, not labels, that he is the leader Sri Lanka needs.
I am a Sri Lankan born New Zealand citizen and I believe Anura is a very intelligent and educated person way better than all other politicians who rule the country before him and bank crafted the country. My whole family going to move back to our mother land Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 because their will be no corruption again in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Glad to see the comment section doing justice in preserving a more realistic picture of the situation. We would like to suggest foreign media speak directly to the new government instead of speculating from the sidelines.
I am a Sri Lankan who has worked in International Development for more than 30 years, including in the rural areas of Sri Lanka. I have seen our country slide into deep corruption and impunity, more so since JR became president. The Rajapakses ruined the country and amassed wealth that is stashed away outside in Sri Lanka. Even the victory of the civil war is no victory when civilians were murdered in the final battle. The rules of war were broken throughout the nearly 30 years of conflict. All successive presidents made the country poorer, while the ruling elite grew richer. As an educated and hardworking citizen and single mother, I finally decided to leave the country. I returned as a Development advisor from time to time, and in 2018, decided for good that I would stop altogether as the corruption in development projects became unbearable. It was distressing that in my generation, the country had landed into the lower ranks of the world corruption index. AKD is our only hope and as he rightly says, he has no magic wand. The country will have to go through a rough time to get to better times. And all clear thinking citizens will have to support the president. Moreover, after decades of violence, SL is a country where impunity reigns, and disappearing outspoken people became normal. Cleaning up all the dirt that has been piled up will not be easy. I think this programme should have Sri Lankans to give their opinions...not people who are non nationals giving their opinions.

It is a bias statement to say he is leaning to china ideologically without any evidence. He clearly said he will never do anything that upset India’s security in the region.
This is perhaps the most thought comment, unlike most short sighted garbage i see
Thanks for taking time to inform the reality to people who doesn't know political economic crisis SL has had for decades.

He isn’t a Marxist. He is the enemy of the actual Marxists in Sri Lanka.
@@njaymax you can embrace your pride when the international beggar status ends
Asking form indians ?
Seriously?
Cheers!

Why all you guyz pulling out marxism.... And you better ask about sri lanka from a sri lankan than an indian.
Absolutely.
Also remember that not all western countries are doing economically well at the moment.
Thank you, DW, my favorite foreign channel. No bias and rich in content.

I’m sure this will save at least 25 to 50% of money which can be easily used for developments
As you know corruption is a chain. Starts from the top to bottom .

Balance has no proper record
I'm a Sri Lankan. AKD will turn the country for good direction and our country is most 2nd economicallly stabilize Asian country in 1948. So we will achieve that again. ❤❤Because of past currpted government activities influenced this situation.
During his speech when the president stated that he’s not a magician, I think he was being honest and trying to avoid giving false hope to people, I don’t think it had anything to do with humility or it could be seen as an insurance

Sri lanka is fully independent county.❤❤❤
As a young Sri Lankan, I want to emphasize that Ranil Wickremesinghe's economic policies were not the core issue. His actions to suppress the 'Aragalaya' movement extinguished our aspirations for a better government. While he implemented economic reforms, these measures primarily served to stabilize the old, corrupt political elite that the public rejected during the 'Aragalaya' protests.
The Maragalaya destroyed Sri Lanka's govt and its economy !
Port hambanthota was leased to China by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinge after coming to power in 2015.

"Marxist or Not" is not the issue, there were 3 presidents called Sirisena, Gotabaya and Ranil came with "stop corruption" theme, prior to current President, . Sirisena government was more corrupt than any others plus took $12.65 billion loans in 4 years adding a record to Sri Lanka loan history.. Gotabaya was the useless leader ever, did not take loans but failed to do anything . The country must have a productive economy and the start should be a strict agriculture reforms with essential productions as we had in 1970 to 1977..

How dumb are they to ask about sri lanka from indians 😂😂

He is focused on the progress and well-being of the Sri Lankan people, not on promoting any particular "ism."
Sri Lanka needs a leader who will address the needs of its citizens in a practical, forward-thinking way, and Anura Kumara is capable of doing just that. Let us give him the chance to prove through his actions, not labels, that he is the leader Sri Lanka needs.
I am a Sri Lankan born New Zealand citizen and I believe Anura is a very intelligent and educated person way better than all other politicians who rule the country before him and bank crafted the country.
