I myself was absolutely hammered right in this area around 17 years ago. 6 yachts left Portimao, in the Algarve, and only 3 boats made it to Lanzarote, Canary Islands. The 3 boats that sank were all heading for shallow water in Morocco in massive seas.
Out of the 3 boats that made it, only 2 kept going. We partied in Arrecife for 4 days straight, celebrating life!
Those auto pilots sound like they are messaging Orcas through the amplification of the rudder, "come eat me, come eat me, this rudder is tasty"
Bet the sea floor is littered with not-so-delicious autopilots.
LOL
Oh, I laughed out loud when you said Auto pilot singing that wonderful song. So cool that you’re doing this as a young man you’re gonna have stories to tell and experiences to relive for your whole life.😊
Me too!
Sam, agree with you having one of the best sailing channels on RUclips. Amazing on what you have accomplished over the years for a relatively small boat based to the areas that you have visited and explored. In addition, the range of repairs and modifications you have made on the Pickle have been impressive. Hope you keep enjoying on what you are doing!
It always seems strange that ppl like you Sam that have spent years on the sea still get sea sick. Looking forward to your Atlantic crossing.
Not really I spent 21 years in the navy. 16 years on 4 different ships. Every once in a while your body betrays you and it happens
sadist 😂
I joined the Navy at 16 and was immediately incapacitated by sea sickness but on a working ship there was nowhere to hide.Nightmare😂😂
Jeezzzz I got seasick just watching those waves!!!! Get em Sam!!!!!
I almost tossed my dinner just watching
During the day there's a bus right at the marina exit. At night, you'll have to climb the hill to the bus stop. If you want to rent a car, I recommend Cicar as there are no hidden charges and service is excellent. Also, definitely check out La Palma, the prettiest of all the islands. Stay in the capital (Santa Cruz) or Tazacorte. In Radazul, the breakfast place at the other end of the marina is pretty nice. Definitely check out the volcano national park and Anaga forest for some good hiking. Skip the touristy south ;) The prettiest marinas on the islands are on Lanzarote (Calero and Rubicon).
@@Radehx good info, but you do understand that he probably left months ago.
@@Nixontheman depends…not if he wants to cross the Atlantic he didn’t ;)
Did not expect Tenerife to be so beautiful! I am of Canary Islands descent on my father's side of the family, they emigrated in the early 19th century to Puerto Rico, then a Spanish colony.
It’s probably the most beautiful of the Canary Islands but also suffers from the package holiday
Love your videos man been watching u for a while, you seem like a great sailor allot more relaxed then others on RUclips who freak out over stuff to make video
Dear Sam. You are happiest when it is you and your boat against the world.
Concur. At least that is how it appears on the video we (I) see
Not sure i agree. Have you seen his girlfriend? He seems pretty happy when shes around.
Except for the part where he had his head in the bucket. That’s no fun. 🙃
@@timp5668 I agree. She is absolutely adorable and no doubt about a kindly Soul.
@@timp5668 I agree, a girlfriend who sails and has her own boat. She's a keeper.
great video Sam. I hope one day you get the excellent autopilot you deserve!
"this autopilot "sings the sweetest melody." LOL!!! I guess even young salts in their prime get seasick. You're a good dude Sam. You tell it like it is. No BS. Hang in there dude. Thanks for the vid.
Your auto-pilot sounds like “Flipper”, remember that series about the young boy and his friend, the “friendly Dolphin”? LOL! I kept looking around for one!
Loving your posts, your a very likable interesting guy to watch! Keep up the good work
What a monster of a cargo ship !!!
Your living life to it's last day buddy 🎉...congrats on your Success
I just bought a second sail boat, 28 footer, very nice, planned to go sailing solo as well, Amaterdam, Belgium, France, Portugal, or England, or Denmark... Love to see your inspired videos Sam ❣️
Thanks! Great video.
When I first heard the auto pilot , I thought for a second that you had a goat aboard with you!
Hahah does sound like a goat
Getting Sea Sick is the worst possible feeling. No Fun and Sam usually does not get sick. 350 miles is touch. This is no short trip. Good for you Sam. Long deal and the Canary Islands will be awesome!!
That was fun. Thanks, Captain Holmes! ❤😊
Climbing to the very top in Crocs... You've got style.
You're my hero, Sam!
Only Sam could happily animate the cockpit battle between the silent hardworking windvane and the new screechy tillerpilot. All while sailing offshore in lumpy conditions. Nice work Sam ❤
Sam.... thanks so much for your time and patience as I snagged you for some questions and a selfie at the boat show. I appreciate your down to earth vibe and friendliness. Take care there. 🌞⛵🌴
never be embaressed at sailing caution with reefed main. it shows wisdom, easy on you and the boat.is best.
Hi Sam !
Nice to see you again.
I was worried about you with all the storms and strong winds. Take care !
Anouk
A little silicon spray on the chrome arm of your steering unit might quiet the chatter, as is going in and out along the rubber gasket.
Nice to see a few more holes drilled into the boat, it must be way lighter now 😎
Sure is!
Hi Sam! I've been watching your channel for several years and its very cool to see you in Tenerife, I'm originally from there. Its a very beautiful place with many things to do, if you end up staying for the month . I recommend you visit the north and south of the island, as they are very different to each other. And at least once eat in a "guachinche" these are the typical restaurants that sell local produce. Enjoy! I will enjoy seeing tenerife from your eyes, since I haven't been there for some years now...
15,344th tag-along view - let's go sailing with Sam...
Yeah..... getting sea sick is not fun! You can tolerate way more than I can, so I can only image how bad I'd feel in those conditions!
Great that you shared that, so many vloggers always only show the good side of things.
That was a sweet hike at the end.
Your autopilot sounds like a robotic seagull. 😂
😂
Worse than a seagull. Needs WD40 or something man 😂
More pelagic. 😂
I’m going for sounds like a chipmunk when it’s not angry it’s chirping slow when it’s angry. It’s chirping fast.
Spongebob vibes
23:14 It’s “laughing” at you , after going for your leg ! That was hilarious when you said the auto pilot was jealous of the Wind vane, right after that so it probably sounded that way to everyone else too. It’s either laughing or mad, there’s no in-between!!😂
Hi sam Im 20 yrs old and I broke my big toe so I've been pretty depressed because I've been out of work cuz i can barely walk, been watching your videos to pass time and been making me so much better because I also have a passion for boats and sailing and hoping I can do what you do in the next few years! Super useful information to keep in mind in a lot of aspects as well.
Right on. Hope it heals quick
Thanks
You're great bud, I always love watching you. From the first epasode. Thats for the past time intertanment *waves*
Cool fade transitions I love the short segment b roll type stuff
Those waves are twisted.Glad you cleared them . Cheers
It’s funny how the inside walls are covered in sponsor stickers like a proper race boat! :D
awesome Sam... please come back to Scotland
Sam, love the mirror glasses. Much better than the other models you’ve been sporting!
Glad you like them!
Thanks!
A couple of thoughts, when i look over someones map work as they scroll through thier information on thier tablet. Most times they are familiar with thier content. For me the some peoples searching is so fast i dont comprehend much. Those of us that appreciate the picture on paper of your detailed travel plans as going slower causes greater comprehension for many. Blessings...m
Fell asleep while this was playing and kept dreaming of goats because of the noise that thing is making.
Lol
Sam, you should definitely visit lid gigantes while in Tenerife. Amazing. Most scenic place. Bus to masca. Walk the few miles to the beach and get water taxi to the port again. So jealous!!
I check your RUclips presence periodically ❤, I have no clue to how and why you love to risk the sea voyages that is literally unpredictable and yet very predictable and scary. Prayers 🙏
Awesome stuff, was cool meeting you in Annapolis! Wireless remote for the autopilot is pretty neat, working on a DIY one right now for my old autohelm 3000
Living your best life. 🥂 cheers!
I like your sunglasses, man. Those are groovy!
Thank! I picked them out myself.
Hey Sam, I've been following your journey for a couple of years now, and you’ve inspired me to learn how to sail. I’m based in Tenerife-if you ever want to go for a hike or need a hand with your boat, feel free to reach out. It’d be an honor to meet you. Safe travels!
I don't know, but some lubrication on it may be required to stop the noise. Good to see a real bit of sailing. Safe journey.
Dunno if your boat is till in Tenerife or if this was all months ago, but there's a neat little museum under that plaza with the fountain that shows the foundations of the old fort they bulldozed over and has a famous cannon that shot someone's limb off. It's just an obscure stairway in the open, you'd think it would be a parking ramp or something.
Also worth renting a car for a day to go up to the top of the volcano and hike around. Very different landscape.
“Brain is broken but the motors workin” - there’s a song in there somewhere 😂
Still following and enjoying your adventures - have been since before you left home and the workshop. Thanks Sam - looking forward to your voyage to
( unless your boat is over- wintered in Tenerife) return to Florida. 😕I worry what might be found there. Phil 🇬🇧
Brilllllliant Sam - amazing how you no to fear - thanks for sharing ⛵️ 👍
Still about the autopilot.... that sound is convincing me that the butterfly sails must be the right solution :) They are silent and should work nicely when going downwind. Cheers !
Wow the sound quality is awesome Sam, night and day compared with your previous videos.
Thank you
Sounds like a you have a kookaburra onboard! 😅 I think Tenerife is famous for windsurfing, seems like lots of wind anyway, fun sailing!
I have been to Agadir. Beach was lovely and temples inland as well.
Hi Sam . Yiu should continue to Cap Verde . And even try Dakar. It's amazing.. and cheap. ❤😊
Thats the plan
I enjoy you vidios thank you
Great sailing Sam! Very impressed. 🙂
haha... Sam, you should get some pipe lagging/insulation foam and cover that auto-tiller.
It'll at least muffle a lot of the sound, and also keep some spray off the unit too.
Great idea
The auto pilot sounds like it's laughing at you. 😂
I've had sea sickness one time and hope never again. Took dramamine and slept it off. After that, I was temporarily fine.
Great video Sam! keep em coming. from New zealand.
Hey Sam- So i read once that with tiller steer boats, you can tie the jib sheet directly back to the windward side of the tiller, effectively rigging an auto-pilot. i never tried it with my Cal 24, but maybe you could look into it. cheers!
I watched a chap sail from Shetland to Norway was bad weather looked extremely challenging I take my hat off to anyone attempting that
I waited for good weather to cross.
Nice video Sam,
I hope you enjoyed at Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the hike through Anaga. For a next visit you must not forget to visit San Cristobal de La Laguna 8World Heritage City).
Next time!
Should have stayed in the marina in the city center. Those large fancy fenders you saw in your marina are there for a very necessary reason. When the wind comes from the Southerly direction, the swell is enormous!
It was a lot of motion in that marina but we made out ok.
Ginger is awesome for nausea. I always have some ginger beer in the fridge just in case.
1500 people watching and 300 likes! Come on people hit the like button!
I like your sunglasses a lot.
Thanks 😎
"Oh Joyous Auto Pilot....you sing the sweetest melody." hahahaha Keep Chargin Sam!
Try unscrewing the motor and grease the screw gear with dow high vacuum silicone grease..the sticky kind that doesnt wash out.. something is loose..sloppy gears or bearing. Silicone grease the seals to prevent salt air/moisture intrusion.
Wind pipes up:
Sam: ‘Wind Shmind’
Awesome Video! Perhaps you could mount the autopilot under that rear seat. I thought of it before as a way to keep it waterproof and add some sound insulation. With the new mounting location, it might interfere with the engine controls. Can it be set up to work on port OR starboard mounting? I'm not sure how much fore and aft movement you get with the arc of the tiller, so the hole might need to be a bit of an oval, and I'm not sure how often the cockpit gets swamped, but who knows, might last longer out of the salt water and you wouldn't have to hear it so much. Keep on making great videos and having awesome adventures!
Your video was way cool Sam!!
Thanks!!
Can you put the Actuator in the cockpit bulkhead under the seat? Might help with noise?
So beautiful on the hike.
”Look at all those chickens” 😊
Damn brother! 10 foot seas and seasick are not a recipe for fun! Glad you felt better fairly quick. Any repairs on the calendar for this stop? Let the deck dry out and go from there? Have a good rest while you are on land for a few weeks and recoup. Looking forward to the next video! Thanks for posting!
Is there a trick to make yourself feel better if your seasick? Cool video Sam, i enjoy watching all your adventures.
Yes, sit under a tree.
nice tp stash your hair looks great 26:21
Thanks
Just bought a Pelagic control head and remote. Hope I don’t regret it.
Relocate the handholds means at least 4 more holes drilled 🥹😉
Sam. Love the videos, my missis always says, " are you watching him again😅". What do you need to do so we can see and track you on the marine traffic app. That would be excellent. Cheers. Alan, UK
I dont usually transmit ais because some organizations are using it to molest boaters. You can follow my tracking site though. share.garmin.com/SamHolmes
Cool video, thanks for that. Your autopilot sounds like a broken Wall-E
Try sailing downwind with a prevented full main. Lots of boats love that in a big breeze. Auto pilots like it too. Much more civilized and more stable.
Hope Julie’s Florida home made out ok. Cortez FL got hit pretty hard by hurricane Milton.
Goodluck to you sir
Lanzarotay 😂 lanzarotti like Ghotti 👍
The autopilot sounds like a happy goat!
Sounds like a baby goat 😊
Sadly I believed them when they said I could not do things like this because I was a girl...disabled now in 60s, enjoying every minute (but fearful for you at times, you are so "happy go lucky" I hope I don't read about your demise...but you are so resilient, you will be fine).
I live in Scotland and find the conditions very challenging I watch Sam all the time and wonder if he’s done much sailing in the coast of Scotland any reply would be great
Yes I sailed from the Ireland to the West coast of Scotland and through the Caledonian canal and then up to Shetland and across to Norway
When you said you would go wing on wing, I thought you were talking about Chicken wings. :)
Sam, tech tip 17.3/1. In respect to your noisy auto pilot. Have you considered cutting a slit in an old small fender? Perhaps putting some sound deadening material on the inside. Not only will it shield it from saltwater, but it will give you peace and quiet. The only concern I can think of, it running hotter if it works hard. By the way, I was at the Annapolis boat show, but couldn’t make out where you are. Otherwise I would’ve said hello.
ocean sailing is the nomads' boat wash
Love the content Sam. I am an amateur fair weather sailor from Australia. Seeing pickled herring heeled so far like in this video made me nervous. Do you have any tips or notes from your experiences on how to overcome the feat of heeling at such great angles and feeling where the limits of the boat are. I've had mine at a similar angle and scared myself and would like to be more adventure with weather other than the 6-8 knots I'm comfortable sailing in. Cheers 😊
With a keel boat like this there is never any risk of it going all the way over from the wind heeling it so no need to worry as long as I stay on. Worst thing is a a disorganized cabin and a little water in the cockpit if the coaming goes under.
