Well here it is. The whole story with numbers and data to show why I am changing for now and where I am going with it. Let me know your thoughts below.
Thank you for laying this out. I feel like a lot of WFPB doctors tell us how much protein we need to survive. I want to know how much protein I need to thrive as I age. This is the first time anyone on the channels I followed laid out the struggle of getting enough protein for those of us in our 50s/60s/70s. And thanks for showing us how we can address it for ourselves.
This is absolutely the basic info (not losing critical muscle) that WFPB ignores. Starch based, at least. Thank you for sharing this. Particularly as you age.
I have found that eating grains whole allows me to eat less calories because they are a lot more filling. I cook 3 or 4 cups of oat groats for the week (I’m hungrier in winter), I use bulgur, spelt or sorghum instead of rice. I Add them into soups too. I do eat quinua everyday too, but it’s not as filling.
This is EXACTLY my story. I've been lifting weights for 15 months. I switched to high protein/lower carb vegan in September and lost 35#. I'm eating 1400 calories a day. Lower protein doesn't work for all vegans. I'm definitely putting on muscle. Vegan Gym is a lifesaver.
Congrats Joey. I am a bodybuilder , I am wfpb, and train folks. You are are on the right track. Many wfpb folks don’t understand the critical protein fact , ie it protects your muscles as well as grows them. I do use a very clean protein powder (vedge is good) to get to my 200g/day. I weigh 225 at about 12-15% body fat. Kudos for making this video and committing to achieving your goals FOR YOU. (And I am 60 too!!)
I can’t wait to see what you have created. I’m in the same situation as you. I’ve been eating plant based for over six years and I’m still overweight, even with eating healthy and exercise. I will be 70 in September and I wanna see a healthier me. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be eating your new recipes. Hugs to you.
I lost 22 lbs eating plant based, i am at goal weight now, and my BMI is in range …I am 72 but I have noticed I lost muscle, and was just researching about this yesterday I think your doing amazing, look great, and will lead the way for us all
I'm 72 as well, and started higher protein WFPB SOS, adding organic pea protein powder, as I started working out with weights. Got buffed in short order--well worth it.
I just turned 70, am fully plant based gluten free. I’ve never had a weight issue but do weight resistance exercises 5 days a week as well as long walks to stay fit.
Good on ya'. I do core work 7 days/week, circuit work 3 days/week, and jog 7 days per week. Eating clean without exercise simply doesn't work for me. @@kathleenphillips7145
As a very short, elderly woman, I'm in the same boat as you with a BMR of about 1100 calories per day and a much worse percentage of body fat. Add to that fibromyalgia which makes working out excruciating at times. My diet has been all over the place but keto/carnivore were disastrous for me so I'm now going plant based and am hopeful. Looking forward to seeing what recipes you come up with for us oldies. Thanks.
As a senior female with FM and 5 years WPB, I’m 73 lbs less. I’m also hypothyroid. I have learned that Dr McDougall and Naturopathic practitioners like the TSH to be around 2 -2.5, when others allow it to be around 4. Thyroid really slows your metabolism
That's great, joey. I had to quit some plant based food like white rice , noodles, and bread and eat more beans, red yams and squash to add more vitamins and minerals to my diet.
This is me, Joey. I'm 5'2 60 years old and weigh 165. When I hit menopause I gained weight and I became hypothyroid. I'm so glad you're sharing this especially those numbers!
This was THE MOST valuable information for Vegans EVER! Thank you SO MUCH for this. I definitely will be watching your upcoming recipies. Thank you for your persistence. I’m struggling with the protein weight loss issue as well. Good luck on our journey.
I watch ALOT of plant based food videos, I mean ALOT! Mate, this was eye opening and something that ALL plant based food people need to know. Great information here, thanks for sharing!
Absolutely! What works for one does NOT work for EVERYONE. Please don't let anyone deter you from your goal. I'm right with you. I'm so glad you're being so transparent. It's such a big help.
Thank you! This is exactly what I need for my own health. I was told to increase my protein intake to 120g/day and lower my caloric intake. I just purchased Soy Curls, Chik'n, and Seitan last week. I need to start logging my numbers every day and weighing my food. I am looking forward to all of your recipes. They are going to be a great help to me. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your journey with us and what you are changing for your overall wellness.
I’m new to this channel. It was a pleasure to see another senior vegan that’s focused on eating more protein. I’m 57 years old and definitely noted the difference in wanting more whole food plant based protein after menopause that started at 51. I love tempeh, tofu, nuts and beans daily along with all the other wonderful plant based foods of course. Working out at the gym and swimming always helps too. Stay strong Joey. I appreciate your honesty. Would be nice to see you start an online high protein group for vegan seniors. :)
One of the things I like most about you is that you keep it real. Thank you for this video, Joey, and I'm looking forward to the new high-protein recipes. 💚
We are all individuals. You do what works for you. You are still vegan. You are still eating mostly whole foods. You have a specific goal and are working toward it. It's your journey you are sharing with us. Thanks for just being you!
Thank you for your transparency and clear, sensible approach to presenting this topic. You are an inspiration. There needs to be more conversation about weight loss and muscle gain in the plant based community. Thank you for highlighting this.
I'm right there with you Joey! Over 60, WFPB, healthier than my peers (and those younger), but down to the last 15 lbs to lose and only losing 1lb or less than 1 lb a month and working out with a trainer. Totally stumped as well. Thanks for looking for answers. It's fact that , that as we grow older our protien needs go up. Can't wait for next weeks video!
Thanks for sharing. As a starch solution/plant based eater myself, I also have struggled with this concept of including more protein in order to meet my physique goals. It was very helpful/encouraging to see your numbers.
Be encouraged, Joey. Its good to experiment and find out what works for you. There's no crime here. I wish you every success. Thanks for sharing your story recipes with all of us. 🌺
Thank you so much. I’m a 53 year old menopausal woman. I’m also trying to up my protein as I start doing more strength training. Studies show as we age we absolutely need more protein. Thank you, I am looking forward to your new videos.
Thank you for being so transparent. I remember your video when you went to 1200 calories a day - broke through the myth that all a person needs to do is go WFPB and massive weight will effortlessly drop off. I'm also an ethical vegan and looking forward to seeing how the higher protein change works out!
Hey, Joey, I am with you all the way! Since first watching your video on August 29 2023 I’ve lost 44 pounds but in the last month hardly any weight. That is ok as my body adjusts. I am a 79 year old woman who averages around 30 grams of protein a day. I can’t wait for you coming videos showing me how to improve my protein intake. I think that it is important for me to add that I’m following your lead after consulting with my doctor who has so far approved my course of action. Thank you, Joey. You have shown me how to make healthy changes to the way I eat. I’m very grateful. Starch Solution all the way!
so glad you're doing this!! I went from keto to vegan and gained 40 lbs. I didn't want to eat meat, so I stuck with it. Low and behold, I went back to eating meat, thinking that would help me shed lbs... it didn't. Thank you so much for your insight! Looking forward to upcoming videos
Pure pea protein powder packs in 30 grams for only 140 calories, just something to consider. I know it’s often maligned by WFPB adherents, but I think it’s nutritious and very helpful for this effort.
Thanks for your kind bluntness, honesty, and humor. This is a real struggle for me, too. I appreciate you. I am WFPB already and I work in healthcare; what you are saying "makes sense" to me. I am going to try to follow along with you - so grateful that it doesn't feel like I'm alone in my struggle. Congrats on the results you are getting! You look healthier and happier. :)
I’m pretty much in the same boat as you! I am 65, trying to be Plantbased, told I need to eat more protein, but I don’t know how to do that. So I am really looking forward to seeing your videos! I wish you much success.
I don’t usually comment but saw your video and felt the need to say thank you for being so honest about the protein issue! I am currently 48 and have been Whole Food Plant Base for over 4years now. It has Changed my life! I was able to reverse my Lupus because of my diet change and will never go back! Unfortunately, all the information out there is so confusing and never seems to address the protein issue. I don’t want to bore you with the details about my WFPB journey but want to mention that I did lose a lot of weight when I started but I think I was losing muscle as well. About 2 years into being WFPB I became weak, started being exhausted all the time, noticed hair loss and started gaining the weight that I lost(not what I wanted to happen). I met with a nutritionist/trainer found out my protein was too low and so were my calories. Looking at my height and the goal weight that I want to be at I have to take in about 120-130g of protein and taken in about 1300 cal. I need to also do less cardio and more weight training to increase my metabolism (due to the muscle I have lost). I am allergic to soy (which is tough being WFPB) so I have been supplementing with pea protein called “Naked Pea”. The only ingredient is peas but it has leucine, which I have learned is an important amino acid for muscle gain. One serving has 27g protein and 120calories. I put it in everything and have been able to meet my protein goals. I have been feeling so much better! I have noticed changes in my body and I am on my way to meeting my goals! I am stronger, have more energy, my hair is growing back and still Lupus free! Protein is important but you just need to pay more attention to it being WFPB. It can be done!😉 I wish more people addressed the protein in Plant base diets to meet everyone’s goals. Thank you again for addressing the protein issue and I look forward to seeing you meet your goals. Stay strong!💪
This is exactly what I needed to hear. You've just gotten a new subscriber. BTW, I'm 66 and a high raw WFPB eater. Your direction is what it's all about... Thank you! Lastly, mushrooms are a game changer for protein uptake.
Yay! Thank you so much. I just signed up with a trainer 4 weeks ago and I'm starting Simon Hill's Challenge 2/1. The first week is focusing on protein. He is plant based, but focuses on more protein. Like you, I have trouble getting enough protein on a whole food plant based diet and trying to stay in a calorie deficit. I have resorted to plant based protein shakes. I will be thrilled to learn some new recipes.
I already had the labs. My trainer had the grip strength gadget. For Vo2 max I used my heart rate monitor. I know it isn’t that accurate but will save getting the professional Test done after the 12 weeks. The Polar H10 is great for the Zone training.
Honestly, your new focus has finally prompted me to subscribe! I, too, am creeping up on geezerness, and it's just a fact that geriatrics need to up their protein to maintain muscle mass and prevent frailty. I'll be watching your new content with great interest. Cheers from the north side of town! 👋
I think you are doing great! You prove that WFPB isn't always one size fits all. Some people need different approaches. Do what you need to get the results YOU are after.
Thank you for sharing your story. I will be 59 this month. Due to an unknown illness I went form 189lb. to 112 lbs. in less than a year. My doctors and nutritionists kept stressing that I eat more meat and dairy. I tried that and it just made me sicker. I am slowly becoming plant based. The only animal protein I eat is fish about once a week. I have no muscle mass anymore and it shows in my weakness. I am SOOO looking forward to your recipes! I am not concerned about calories, I need to gain weight as well as muscle.
I love this so much. I’m excited to follow along with you. I’m eating higher protein now as well because I am an endurance athlete. I have been WFPB for years. About 4 years ago I dialed things in and lost 20 lbs eating this way within a few months. I also lost a ton of muscle. I was very educated in this area but didn’t put the protein and muscle loss equation together until later. I gained back about 10 lbs when I became a runner, which I really probably needed and a lot of it is muscle. Now what I am doing is eating higher protein to support strength training and endurance sports. I’m 53, 5’3’’, small frame, 115 lbs. and I’m focusing this year on body recomposition, training smarter, eating more protein, and all within plant based living. So I’m super excited to be on this journey with you!!! Also, more protein helps with muscle recovery and bone health! Let’s do this!
Love this, just started going through menopause and it was suggested I eat more protein - and like you have done vegan whole food but maintained a significant amount of weight. I'm excited to start this journey with you and wish you all the best!
57 here, did Starch Solution and ate Whole Food Plant Based for a while lost a bunch of weight initially but started to gain it back. In one year gained back 20 lbs eating the same way and I have felt so hopeless! No way I am giving up vegan but I have to get my weight under control! Thanks for sharing this, it is just what I needed to hear!
Have you looked into the Nutritarian diet? I am following it - or at least the tenets espoused by Dr Fuhrman - and it is working for me. So far, anyway.
I needed to lose, friend told me about starch solution. I stuck to it a while but I gained weight! No loss! Upped walking and ten min at home floor exercises but still completely stuck-nothing! I feel like potatoes, rice etc work for others but not for me to lose weight. My Muscles are at a loss, i feel, and feel lower energy.. how does it work for others to lose weight, I dont know. Maybe some age related, hormone thing? In early 60s hypothyroid and had been somewhat low in vit D as soon as winter hit but working on that with supplement. So MAYbe this is key-more protein! Id never go back to eating animals after a decades of being WFPB. Lookin g forward to your next videos. Unfortunately, I can’t eat Setien due to gluten…Thx for sharing!
@@jules9628I did the starch solution (HCLF) for a bit too and was following Plantiful Kikis and High Carb Hannahs Recipes. I felt good, only lost a little bit of weight but felt like I was still always hungry, even though I ate a lot of food. I now eat a vegan high protein diet and each meal keeps me full for much longer. So maybe try to incorporate more proteins into your diet for now on and see what happens.
Your honesty is awesome! I am on a health journey as well. I feel like health journeys are personal. That’s what so great about them! I’m not a vegan but enjoy your channel, humor and most importantly your recipes! Just know I am excited to support you on your new journey ! All the best to you and your family!
I'm really excited to see your high protein videos. I workout 3-4x a week. I was a terrible vegetarian for 15 years prior. Basically just ate carbs but everything was processed. I was exhausted constantly and had no idea why. This will be fantastic to see what you have come up with.
As as new 60 year old what you are doing is really interesting,my weight isn't budging on a plant based diet so if it works for you, keep doing it Joey 😊
I really liked this video, based in numbers. I’m a vegan myself for 8 years now and you have a new follower now. Thank you for setting the example out there! Plant based diets are great for any goal and we just need to adequate it to our personal goals and lifestyle.
You’re not alone in this situation by any stretch. I’m 65 years old and I’ve done the strict potato diet many times and I’ve been a vegetarian for 40 years and a vegan for 10 with plant-based changes over the past couple years and I’m still about 20-22 pounds overweight, with a body fat of 30+, so let’s see how this goes for you and good luck! Perhaps we will all learn something along the way with you that we have needed to know all this time, too. Meanwhile, I’m curious to know about the higher protein in nuts, like almonds and macadamias, and how they help out with the protein deficit. Or not.
Nuts are high in protein but very high calories as they are high fat. Legumes are the better choice, however if you want to do like Joey even they have too much energy.
I’m so happy you’re making these videos. I’m in the same boat you are. I didn’t get scanned but I’m pretty sure I’m the same. My calorie requirement is about 1375 so any recipe you can throw our way that is low calorie and high protein is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I love watching your journey....on a similar one myself...almost 60...5ft. 1 inch post menopausal. Trying to gain muscle. and add protein. We got this..😘
This is great! I’ll be sharing with my mom. Also for anyone else who is wondering the best way to increase your basal metabolic rate is to build more muscle.
You are amazing! I just joined the Vegan Gym. My journey starts today. All the hard work you're putting into the recipes is going to help me accomplish the food side of things so much easier. You are my hero! Thank you!
Appreciate this - been looking for a higher protein WFPB-ish diet for my husband and me. I like that you are focusing on protein. I can't find a lot of that on the WFPB RUclipss I often go to. I also like that you are not trying to bulk up like a lot of the high protein vegan RUclipss seem to focus on. Protein and losing weight or maintaining weight are important and little attention is paid to the issue, so thank you for doing this. I also like the one-on-one talk you did to explain things. I look forward to seeing some recipes and hearing more!
Joey congratulations on the weight loss. I can see it in your face. I recently lost 15 lbs but noticed that I lost some muscle with it. I’m so happy you are sharing your journey because I need to add more protein to my diet too. Good luck and I appreciate your journey. It takes a lot to ask for help. ❤
Thank you Joey, I need this too. Will follow very intensely. Looking forward to your new recipes. Blessings from BrisVegas. Yes, always about the animals, first and foremost.😀😘
Hi Joey, thanks for sharing this! I too am having this issue on a whole foods plant based diet. I'm also in my 60's. I stumbled on a channel Sinmett Nutrition, he's a Vegan body builder on a whole foods plant based diet. You may have already seen his channel but in the off chance you haven't just thought I'd share it. I've been learning a lot since watching him. Good luck on your journey, I have no doubt things will improve, already looks as though they are!!
Oh my gosh, you are singing my tune!!!! I have finally come to terms with this reality in my life. I, too, have been on a long, self-discovery process. I look forward to hearing more of your journey, thank you!
Maybe you already know about him (I tried to scroll through comments to see if someone else mentioned, but there are so many!), but have you looked into Robert Cheeke? He's a vegan body builder...while you obviously aren't trying to become a body builder, it might be worth looking into his books. I believe he has recipes that you could adjust for your calorie needs. Best of luck on your journey! It's inspiring.
Gotta say, i find it interesting how in sync we are lol. I just discussed this very issue, 2 videos ago. How we dont know when we are losing weight if it is infact fat or muscle loss. Thanks for sharing your story and as always being honest and transparent. I love that you show the real ups and downs of a weight loss journey. All the best, I will be looking forward to seeing your results 😊
Stasia!! I wish we lived closer, we could be BFFs!!!! I think we are all on this journey and its best to share what works and what doesn't. I think you and I have been doing that for a long time.
Just found you. I am 73 & WFPB for a few months now…I am losing but noticed I am losing muscle too…so, I have been concerned of my protein under-consumption for a while - thanks for this.
I am so glad to find you and eager to learn your recipes. I have been trying so hard to be 1300 calories with 120 grams of protein. Pretty close to your goals. And it’s HARD. I’ve been supplementing with protein bars, protein powders, etc., which doesn’t really fit the other goal of eating unprocessed (or minimally processed food). I feel like you are just about to become my new hero.
One of the best explanations of why we need more protein. I’ve been trying for two years with various styles of wfpb and have been struggling. I will enjoy seeing your example as I also try to incorporate more protein. And I’m post menopausal so I feel the pain of the struggle.
Fascinating discovery! My son is a vegetarian who is recovering from a broken ankle. He expressed the need for more protein for recovery…..and we all could lose some weight! I love that you are sharing this journey with all of us. Thank you!
Really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability here. It’s hard to turn paths from what you know and try it someone else’s way. I’ve been vegan for almost 20 years but lost 100 lbs on a starch based diet about 8 years ago. I’ve kept it off, had skin removal and everything, but I still don’t feel like I’m a fit, healthy person or a good example of a healthy vegan. I’m totally following along - here’s the start of my four months! Also, I assumed you both were in your early 50’s at the latest - you look fantastic!
This is the same predicament I'm in. I'm so happy I found your channel and you were able to get down to the nitty gritty details troubleshooting this dilemma. You probably solved so many other peoples concerns-- mine for sure. So thanks 😊
He looks great 👍 definitely thought he was in his 40’s so proud of you for taking the next step. It’s one thing to be healthy but it’s another thing to look like you’re healthy and feel good in your body. Keep up the good work!
I'm with you for this, I'm packing on the wfpb pounds at 51, meno, etc.....I need more protein and I need help! Can't wait to see the recipes. Thank you for doing all this work, so appreciate you!
Yay! I'm so excited about this! I am a 66 year old woman who has been vegan for over six years and I have been going to the gym this winter and this will be so helpful for me!!! Thank you!
New Sub. Appreciate your honesty- I am 63 and put on weight these last 3 years. Trying 3day water fast and 4 days eating - it’s working for me (at the moment) and finding easy. Bought special scales that give you data etc. Sticking to it for another 4 weeks see if it continues to work. I loved the starch base Dr McDougall diet - should maybe look at it again. Really liked this video and liked YOU and your delivery.
I appreciate this. This is my story too. Was in good shape but wanted to go "clean" without any animal food. I have turned to mush. I know I have lost lean mass. I am looking forward to your journey.
Thank you so much for your video. Same boat: 61 YO and having trouble dropping the visceral fat and gaining muscle. I get so exasperated, at times, with the vegan videos talking about how just going WFPB will solve all your health problems. Over 60 is another story. I can't wait to see the new meals you'll be incorporating. Your enthusiasm for health is infectious and much appreciated.
Just discovered you and THIS is my exact experience, 12 years WFPB and my journey is like yours. Looking forward to seeing what you do over the coming months.
Hi, I am a vegan fitness trainer and athlete. I follow vegan athletes and have learned a lot . One person you might want to consider following is Natalie Matthews(fitveganchef)she is a IFBB Bikini Competitor. She teaches you on YT how she keeps her protein high and calories low while cutting for her competitions. She also is an excellent cook and food prep. Btw lentils are much higher in protein than the other legumes you had mentioned. Stay positive! I wish you the best!🏋♀
Wishing u always the best Joey and ur family. I will continue to watch all ur channels. I feel that I need to begin a program like urs I have lost 55 pounds on WFPB but I now feel that I have lost alot of muscle. So I will look into low impact training and follow ur way of eating. Thanks for all u do.❤
Thank you so much. I have been struggling to lose weight since going plant-based. I had a weight loss coach suggest I was not getting enough protein. I think they may be right. Your journey is very inspiring
Aloha Joey, I m a 62 year old female, I have been plant based for 7 years. I'm overall healthy like yourself, but I too feel I have a little too much body fat, I think I eat enough protein daily, after watching your video, I realize I'm probably not eating enough protein has I need. I look foward to watching you preparing new high protein meals. Mahalo Nui Loa from the Garden Isle..🌺🍍Elaine
Hi Joey my heart sank when I started to watch the video because I thought you were going to say you were going to start eating meat but thank goodness I was wrong and you’re still my favourite vegan RUclipsr. good luck with your weight loss
Kay, I would never go back to eating animals. I am a vegan for the animals. I cant go back. Don't you worry about that. I wont ever disappoint you when it comes to our exploited friends.
I love the video. I love the format. I am with you on your journey! PS, you are not grotesque. I’m looking right at you! All I see is commitment, love of family and love of life. None of that is grotesque!
I totally understand your rationale and I need to increase my protein too. My vegan diet has slid toward too much bread, pasta, and carbs, causing me to gain a few pounds. Can't wait to see some of your great recipes!
You do what you need to do to reach your goals and to be healthy. Not every diet or way of eating works for everyone. You have my support now and always will! 😊❤
This is the change I need to make also. Have had the same blubber gut for years, and feel like I am losing muscle. Looking forward to your plant based recipes with more protein. Thanks.
Omg! Love this and love your content. I am a teacher too and vegan and struggle with this issue and I am a weight lifter. I know for women some of this will be different - I struggle trying to do 120 grams a day of protein! I will have to add these other things in and I am 54. You are a real dude and I love this content!!!
Great video! Kudos for you starting a weight lifting program. I started mine about 13 weeks ago and have really noticed an improvement in my muscle mass and strength. One other thing that I don’t think you mentioned is that, since muscle burns more calories than fat, as your muscle mass increases, your BMR (I think) gets better and you may even find that you are able to increase your caloric intake and maintain optimum weight.
I love this content as I am in peri menopause and was told to increase my protein to build and sustain muscle mass for my older years. I have had to make and incorporate my protein sources so I don't go too high in calories or fat! This is perfect timeing and content for me right now. Thank you, Joey! I have been watching you silently for years and will continue whether you eat like me or not, I love your family! ❤
It's awesome this is working for you! I don't really track how that trainer looked at the deficit in light of your BMR, though... but to me, it actually makes the boost-protein tack look that much more credible in the context of your results (AND, TO ANYONE WHO DOESN'T ALREADY GET THIS - the protein boost ONLY helps with lean mass WHEN WE ARE EXERCISING - doesn't just go build muscle otherwise, and is more likely to convert to body fat if we're not doing the work). Anyway, BMR is our burn just to survive in a coma, not to fuel daily life, let alone high activity and focused exercise. Just making this note for people it might be important to. Most trainers I see calculate the daily energy requirement to sustain you-at-a-healthy-weight, at your specific activity level (so, higher than BMR, usually just by a few hundred calories or so for moderate or light physical activity), and either shave off from that or go with that for more overweight people. Subtracting from BMR seems really extreme in the training and fitness world. For mid-life women watching and reading, too, I've recently seen very different perspectives for women, especially in and after menopause, and especially for those who are exercising or training daily. Calorie balance can be a little fiddlier and if you're an athletic woman but finding your body is changing as you age, for instance, nutritional focus may be crucial including attention to higher protein intake - and potentially even higher caloric intake (comprising highly nutritious and preferably all plant-based foods). Highly recommend Dr. Stacy Sims' work on this for women! Anyway, sorry for the side track but this was very interesting, it's great to see your results shifting so well, and I just thought I should throw in a couple of thoughts there.
I caught your channel for the first time. I feel like I'm in the same boat as you. My trainer told me I needed 146 grams of protein a day. I want to add more protein to my plant-based eating but was trying to figure out how. Your video really helped when I saw that the numbers didnt add up. Certain meat wasnt making me feel great so i just stopped eating it. And tofu is not what i want to eat either. I look forward to following you on your journey. You sharing your journey will help so many people. Im so grateful for you❤
Am totally with you. The starch solution is fine for some, particularly those without a weight problem, but for others (like me) it is like spinning wheels. And somewhat instinctively, I always knew I wanted to lose weight, but not ever look as emaciated as many of the starch solution champions. I am 66 years old and finally finding my own way. Glad you have the courage to experiment with this and share it with the world.
Congratulations on the progress you've made so far, Joey! I'm excited to see what you come up with in the kitchen. I'm 50 years old and 5'1", so I also have a low BMR and struggle to bump up my protein without bumping up fat and overall calories too much. Here's to building (or at least retaining!) our muscle mass while leaning out in 2024!
This was such an interesting video. The part that caught my interest was the protein part of what you said "Protecting the lean muscle mass." Getting enough protein." This is a game changer.and you backed it up with all your numbers. I for one will still be following you on your journey. Way to go!!
I am so excited to see your high protein meals!! I have never been sucessful creating high protein meals even though I am vegetarian. I don't like eggs at all. Thanks so much and good luck. Can't wait to see what you accomplish in the next 3 months.
Joey u are amazing as always. And…… definitely not in a unique situation! I also struggle with protein. I’m looking forward to viewing your new videos for some guidance on raising protein while being plant based. !!!! Thank you as always
Well here it is. The whole story with numbers and data to show why I am changing for now and where I am going with it. Let me know your thoughts below.
Joey your face and neck look a lot slimmer. You look good. Keep up the good work.
Such a helpful video! Thank you!
Am I the only one who thought Joey is
about 40 years old??🤯
Yes
You are not alone! WOW! He could seriously pass for 40/40-ish.
Yeah you are lol
But he does look great for 60
60? Wow, he looks much younger.
If Nimai calls me, i'll switch to Vedge too!!
Can you share info about training with you?
All the best on your new chapter! Just remember that no part of you is “grotesque”. Be kind to yourself as you transform! We love you!
I came on to say the same thing. Bodies are bodies and they're amazing no matter what size!
3:39 you don't look 60 you look like many in their 50's
I can’t wait to see what you have created. I’m in the same situation as you. I’ve been eating plant based for over six years and I’m still overweight, even with eating healthy and exercise. I will be 70 in September and I wanna see a healthier me. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be eating your new recipes. Hugs to you.
I lost 22 lbs eating plant based, i am at goal weight now, and my BMI is in range …I am 72 but I have noticed I lost muscle, and was just researching about this yesterday
I think your doing amazing, look great, and will lead the way for us all
I'm 72 as well, and started higher protein WFPB SOS, adding organic pea protein powder, as I started working out with weights. Got buffed in short order--well worth it.
You lose muscle if you're not weight training and only doing cardio regardless of diet
Ye, gotta' do resistance training--muscles don't build themselves, and, much worth the effort. @@Healthnutpb
Can you take long walks?
Hi, you’re describing my story, too. Wishing you well on this journey!
That's great, joey. I had to quit some plant based food like white rice , noodles, and bread and eat more beans, red yams and squash to add more vitamins and minerals to my diet.
Yes, I am with you in this journey, 3 years on LFHC ans I can't see my muscle definition for my work on gym 😂
This is me, Joey. I'm 5'2 60 years old and weigh 165. When I hit menopause I gained weight and I became hypothyroid. I'm so glad you're sharing this especially those numbers!
You MUST check out Dr. Stacy Sims!
I'd join that too! Great suggestion 🏆
I’d join too!!
I wholeheartedly encourage you on this journey! Your kindness reigns through all you do!
Love this! You ARE looking great. Please keep those high protein whole food plant recipes coming!
Be encouraged, Joey. Its good to experiment and find out what works for you. There's no crime here. I wish you every success. Thanks for sharing your story recipes with all of us. 🌺
This is exactly what my experience has been as well. I am so grateful for this podcast and I can’t wait to follow you on your journey. Fabulous job!
I swear I was subscribed , well fixed it now
Thank you so much.
You got this!
Best of luck, Joey! The new plan seems to be working great for you, and you are still staying strong for the animals! ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
Great stuff!! Thank you buddy. I needed to hear this. I have the same struggles. Thank you 🙏👍🏼.
Lets do this together!
I support you 100 percent when you are not supported I know how it fills. I am open to learning new things thank you for putting this out there.
@@acdcmiami My normal WFPB gets me about 40-50 and I add tofu, tempeh, TVP, protein pasta, and/or protein powder.
YESSSSS!! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Higher proteins and 1300 -1400 calories. PERFECT!! Thank you ❤
I'm really excited to see your high protein videos.
That was the driving force of the change.
You are amazing! I just joined the Vegan Gym. My journey starts today. All the hard work you're putting into the recipes is going to help me accomplish the food side of things so much easier. You are my hero! Thank you!
🎉 Congratulations on working with the team at The Vegan Gym! I really want to do that, too. 💪
@@MirandaHorger Thank you! They are amazing!
Derek Simnett is the one who got me to go vegan in 2018. I watched his videos and know that I could do it also
Oh my gosh, you are singing my tune!!!!
I have been following him on IG for years. He is amazing
@PlantBasedDads oh gosh I agree on all the above! haha. 🥰
Thank you for this new way of looking at plant base...as I'm struggling with this so protein protein protein!
Just found you. I am 73 & WFPB for a few months now…I am losing but noticed I am losing muscle too…so, I have been concerned of my protein under-consumption for a while - thanks for this.
This is one of your best videos. Love the growth. Subscribing!
I will do future recipe with options to have a little lower protein so you can adjust. We are doing a whole day of food for next week so stay tuned.
One of the best explanations of why we need more protein. I’ve been trying for two years with various styles of wfpb and have been struggling. I will enjoy seeing your example as I also try to incorporate more protein. And I’m post menopausal so I feel the pain of the struggle.
The algorithm served me this because my husband and I are in the same position. Looking forward to your content on this journey!
@plantbaseddads I’m getting exactly to where you are! Can’t wait to see your high protein recipes!
Thanks!
Thanks so much Sheri. Lots more recipes to come.
I have 4 months of progress with 3d scans and all that on the other channel called Joey Troxel. Check it out.
Aloha Joey,
I m a 62 year old female, I have been plant based for 7 years.
Thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. I now understand your point. Keep up the great work, I can tell in your face that you are more lean!
Omg! Love this and love your content. I am a teacher too and vegan and struggle with this issue and I am a weight lifter. I know for women some of this will be different - I struggle trying to do 120 grams a day of protein! I will have to add these other things in and I am 54. You are a real dude and I love this content!!!
You got this!
Looking forward to seeing how it goes for you. Eating sufficient protein in a caloric deficit is a real challenge.
Right? That's what my food videos will focus on. We got this. We can all do this together.
Bless you. I have been struggling the same way. This is just what I need, and I cant wait to check out the new recipes!
You got this! Let me know if you make any of them.
Wow. Good for you being so dedicated and focused on your goal. So proud of you!
