One of the few hoovers I've never had an example of - and that's Portapower - come close but never actually had one - got to say that I really like the look of them - like the concept of them- and some great patience here with getting it back together Steve!
I use this for years and so powerful ,really I use it everyday and the cord is long and the bag is so durable and cleans easy . Thanks for info on it and great review.
I have just managed to get one of these (2nd gen I think, all cream black hose) for £15, it's absolutely filthy but apart from the floor tool it's complete, even the original box.
These machines are very easy to repair if they stop working. Now, since this machine is forty years old, parts are gonna be difficult to find, but the motor on this machine is easy to take apart. This was back when Hoover not only made the vacuum, they also made their own motors and cords in house!
Thankfully, they don’t need disassembled very often due to the fact that they have 2000 working hours. There aren’t many motors out there with 2000 brush hours nowadays. The new Portapowers probably have 1000 working hours which is still not bad.
Nicely made and engineered model the fact it still works fine all these years proves it ,are the any spare brass sleeve bearings available or remade if they wear out .
I don't think spares have been available for these for 30 years now. Could probably get a top bearing re-made if a bearing company was willing to do it

The motors on these machines are a bloody nightmare! Hate them

Ah yes the little Oreck can vac. They are quite similar in many ways
I love my portapower but can't get a replacement on/off switch it looks identical to this one
Remember them being given away as free gift with your first order from Grattons, Kays or Great Universal mail order catalogues.
Really? I had no idea they were given away. That goes some way to explaining why you still see a fair few of them around
