Dude, this is one of the very best videos I've seen on RUclips. It really makes me feel better about my 1"x 30" grinder and all my pawn shop tools. I am very new at this, all I am doing at this point are knife "builds". I am wanting to get into "making" knives but thought I don't have the tools I need to do it. Now I feel I can because of what I just saw. Thank you so much.

Good video mate! Wish 2x42 grinders were available here in the UK. It’s either a 1x30 for about 100 quid or a 2x72 for nearly 1000 here! I’m currently using a 6” grinding wheel, files, angle grinder and a handheld combi drill.
Islanders work out well with them,I follow this one channel the guy does everything with hand held and his knives are sought. They even look like a 2x 72 did the bevel. I have a file from 1911 that I made into a blade ,that I filed bolsters into handle and have so much labor into it,am afraid to do anymore in fear I will ruin it.. It looks amazing but I must harden it and with filed bolsters I might not be able to clamp in vice if warping during hardening as if went a little when I annealed it. I heated it to critical twice but still is a little hardened,so now afraid I will go overboard,but was able to drill it etc. I do not like using 1x30 for bevel.. Is only machine I have a rest for as I have a 2x36 Multi tool attachment that mounts on any grinder in tower form but no work rest. You would not believe how amazing this knife looks right now. Is Easter Sunday and I polished it for hardening so I have it ballparked. I changed it to my profile pick but is not changing from my old one. What a blade and beauty. Wish I could get a 2x72 for $1000 USD... In pre1900's Even in Sheffield or Solingen they made jigs with wheels to hollow grind. Was thinking on figuring a jig with two wheels to do consistent bevels.. Or make a homemade 2x72. Variable speed is a MUST. am so jealous when I see a 2x72..I want nice bevels..
About the vice; I have one very similar to yours, but made in England. I use it mainly for knife sharpening and finishing. I removed those deeply grooved hardened jaws (that are only of use to blacksmiths) and replaced them with some I made from 1inch by three quarters brass for the large jaws and some I made from 1/2 inch aluminium cut with a V for the small jaws. Over here in England I can buy precision carbide tipped drills with a HSS body that will cut through hardened (and tempered) steel) easily, but you do need a rigid set up: bolt it down!

Thank you! This is how us inspiring bladsmiths really learn. For me, it seems to prove a bit difficult to find some one that I can apprentice under so far. So I read, watch, and study my ass off. I've also saved up and finally got a 2x72" grinder, also picked up a shop smith from my uncle, feeling grateful. Then a stack of 1084 from Aldo, and a nice amount of black walnut. I plan on filming my first attempts at this new obsession with all my failures / success. I gotta give credit to you and the other RUclips blade smiths who have inspired me and who take their time to show up for what they enjoy! Thanks, Aj
Great video, liked the idea with the rectangle to round duct adapter for the grinder. If you are still in the metal shop you might be able to seal the roof with "silver seal" or a similar product. Up here in Alaska where the snow crushes the roof people put plywood or OSB over the metal and a real roof over that. Of course there usually are budget concerns so that often becomes a blue tarp. Works good for a while as long as it is pulled tight so it doesn't flap in the wind. Just like tools, better quality lasts longer and does a better job. UV resistant and sometimes you can find other colors than blue.

Just getting started myself, I really appreciate you taking time and effort to go over some basics. I'm in the process of choosing a grinder, gonna try and see if I can locate a 2 x 42 so far the initial angle grinds have been the biggest issue. Hopefully that will solve it. Thanks again
Great vice! Great metal band saw! You need to make yourself a table for that.. and the little belt sander is decent for screws and small stuff... for the money, but I'll be making one from a grinder also, like the craftsman you have. Great Vid.
I had the same shed only a little bigger (10x12) and the roof leaked too! Thanks for sharing, I basically have the same set up you do, although I'm still on a HF 1x30. It works ok for the time being, I have made about 6 good knives on it but I am currently building a 2x72. Awsome little shop, its all you need!
+BallewBlade86 Wait until you start grinding on a 2x72, you wont be able to stop smiling! Careful, the knife making and improving the shop gets addicting! With regard to your Craftsman band saw, consider getting a router speed controller and dial back the speed for cutting steel, just a thought. Great tips video.

belt grinders are very easy . If you can use a drill press and a Saturday afternoon look around on you tube. Check out Gary Hudson's channel . Also look on Craigslist for tools . Great video
Question for you guys, are sparks from an angle grinder/belt sander dangerous? I live on the 3rd floor and my only options for the workshop at the moment is the spare bedroom or the balcony (no idea what it's made of, some synthetic that I assume can melt). Just trying to make sure the sparks won't damage the wood flooring, is there some kind of mat I should be putting down or something?

Find a treadmill motor for your 1x30. It makes an excellent sharpener with 2000 grit belts. Look into the reeder products 2x72 grinder. Family owned, excellent products
Yeah if I could ask what's the dimensions of your shed is it a 10 x 10 or 8 by 8 you know I'm I'm personally limited to a 10 by 10 that's why I want to know and I was planning on using only half of it so help

Buy you some contact wheels an bearing shafts put a arm on it an then you have a 72 in. Grinder. It still under powered but works great. Then you can do good quality hollow grind .
Nice little shop. A shed? I bought a shed to, but a wood one so I could insulate it for the winter use.The shed is 16'x10' and it is way to small for my wood working tools. Just an obvious question, but all the tools you pointed out that you don't use, why don't you sell them on Craigs list, or some where else and put the money toward the tools you really want? You may not make back what you put into them, but I did that and ended up getting what I wanted. I made mistakes in buying cheap machines in the beginning too and believe me, you have to pay for quality but it's worth it. And speaking of Craigs list, second hand equipment is not a bad thing either. Best of luck!~Dolly

I built the shed a long time ago to store a motorcycle, once I got into knife making I sold the bike and bought the milling machine. Ideally, I would be on a concrete slab to support the weight but its not an option at this time. However, I am working on an upgrade as we speak! Its amazing how fast we outgrow our shops. I agree 100% on buying good tools....buy once cry once as they say. With my new shop in the works and a new machine coming in, I'll be sorting through and getting rid of the tools I don't use. I have no issues with buying used, especially when some of the old stuff is better than the new stuff. My "new" machine is 40 years old but it runs like the day it was built! James Droddy my dad recently passed away in a car accident and I inherited his tools. He was a welder at one point and had a toooonnn of old Nicholson files. I’m talking toolboxes full. I guess he got them for free from work. They are better than any of the other brands I have tried
+SquirrelFromGradLife Its a cheap saw and wont have the torque needed to get through steel. I thought about getting one and it was easier just to use the portaband in a vise as a makeshift metal cutting band saw.
EKIM1428 it's an electric motor, it's got all the torque in the world to get through steel. A VFD actually multiplies the amperage making your motor have even more torque.
EKIM1428 I hope the one you have will work. I mounted a VFD on an old 3 phase mill for a friend basically got for free but only had standard two phase and it works brilliantly.. he's doing stainless and says it works hardens so fast.
why didn't you put the tarp on the outside of the shed? it seems that would have made more sense. I'm not hating on you just giving u a hard time. I have a whole garage to fill but it seems you are doing way better in your she'd shop. I guess it goes to show its not the size it's how you use it lol
Band saw that will not cut steel? never heard of it… Did it tell you “no” when you tried to feed it steel? Probably a vegetarian… ANYWAY all kidding aside, my Chinese bandsaw is fast as f*** and with a good quality bi-metal band it cuts 6mm of steel like butter, first time I tried it my jaw fell to the floor! The bandsaw has some pulleys in it, but I never made it slower… probably dulls the band faster, but I don’t care Love your channel, love your personality, thank you for the opportunity to learn! [:

+ron newton yes glasses will work just fine with both the full face and half face masks.
Half face, no problem. Full face, you'll usually get some gaps in the seal around where the arms go to your ears.
What size platen did you get? 2x8?
If the glass shatters into a billon pieces it is tempered glass.

Yep I have one on my grinder and old surface grinder to convert the 3 phase into standard household current. They work great.
Its missing a Microwave mate, easily the best thing in any shop

ANYWAY all kidding aside, my Chinese bandsaw is fast as f*** and with a good quality bi-metal band it cuts 6mm of steel like butter, first time I tried it my jaw fell to the floor! The bandsaw has some pulleys in it, but I never made it slower… probably dulls the band faster, but I don’t care

+endwatcher I agree. Their old stuff was good and the new stuff is junk. I have since upgraded my shop to better equipment but that 2x42 is still a great starter grinder.
