I have to say, you nailed it! It can't be more simple and to the point than your explanation. I am running a vSAN cluster of 4 servers, where vCenter is running from vSAN. I already upgraded vCenter and I was asking support for instructions, as I have vSAN on top of ESXI's, and vCenter is running on vSAN storage. Seems like support assumes that everybody paid for the vSphere version with HA, so if you need to do the manual install that is outside of the lifecycle controller, they bug out. Plus, online installation throws very general errors and there is no explanation of what causes it. on top of that, one of four servers upgraded through the same ESXCLI line, and the other 3 didn't!!! So, once again, thanks a lot! :)
