    Thanks for demystifying this...been scared of my old 6.5 host, and thought I'd have to lose or convert my VM's. I'm not scared now, as much. hehe

    Let me add that if your hw is not brand new you get an Hardware error, you can override it if you use the command line upgrade and add the flag "--no-hardware-warning" as it comes suggested duriing the upgrade :)

    This video was very informative and precise. Just out of curiousity, if we were to perform the upgrade via vSphere Lifecycle Manager , the Vcenter must be able to access the internet so as to fetch the ESXI version details . Is that correct?

    • @VirtualizationHowto
      @VirtualizationHowto  Месяц назад

      Yes that is correct. There is also the ability to perform offline installations of patches by downloading the patches first from the patch site and then applying these to your vCenter Server.

    Excellent Efforts thanks...Do we need to upgrade host firmware upgrade before doing OS ( ESXi) upgrade

    Thank you for the video. Broadcom taking over has ruined everything though, not going to be recommending esxi to anyone any longer.

    can you UPGRADE from 6.7 with an "Unsupported CPU" ? Looks like there is a work around for a clean install but not sure for the upgrade method?

    That was awesome, I've been pondering for some time about possibilities of upgrading and always that fear with so many VM's. Am I correct in saying that the bootable ISO method would work with "Custom ISO" I use the Dell one currently (7.0 going to 7.0 3). or future reference will your 2nd method using CLI work using the Dell custom. Thanks for any response(s).

    You did mention anything about licensing.
    can an esxi 7 free license be used? Or do you have to get a new one?
    Currently ESXi 8 free license generation is broken as per the VMWare site

    • @VirtualizationHowto
      @VirtualizationHowto  2 года назад

      Leo, typically you need a new license between major release versions. I suspect they will get the free license form operational soon. There is a hack to reset the evaluation license back to 60 days as well.

    • @LeoVillacorte
      @LeoVillacorte 2 года назад +2

      @@VirtualizationHowto Yeah I understand that. it is something you should mention before doing an upgrade because it could break someone's setup

    Would love to know if you have an answer to this: How to prevent malware/virus on one vm writing to the storage/hdd/partition of another vm or the hypervisor itself ? I.e/ how to segregate disk write access from vm to vm & from vm to hypervisor ?

    • @VirtualizationHowto
      @VirtualizationHowto  2 года назад +1

      Vincent, this is all about security best practices, layers of the security onion. No one solution will protect you fully. Follow the best practices of network segmentation, applying the latest security patches, CPU microcode updates for spectre meltdown, and others, patched operating systems, etc

    • @vincentgallo3351
      @vincentgallo3351 2 года назад

      @@VirtualizationHowto Thanks for replying and yes I aagree that all of those steps need to be taken. However, I was only asking about one part: if it is possible to segregate Storage vm to vm and vm to host. Any idea if that is possible?

    How can I get a copy of the VMWare ESXI 8. I have been searching but to no avail. When ESXI 7 came out, I got that quite easily on VMware website, but apparently this is not the case with ESXI 8.

    I the only thing I don’t like is if you use Image to upgrade your cluster you CANT go back to using the baseline method that usually more flexible. With image it’s a ALL or NOTHING process.

I really believe I can do it (it seems not so complicated) but there is always a bit feer in me.. what if anything goes wrong😅 but I think i do it next week 😊
