- On this episode of Hello World, Bloomberg Businessweek’s Ashlee Vance heads to Japan to find people who are trying to wake the country up from its technological slumber. His journey goes from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka. Along the way, he meets with Japan’s top roboticists making lifelike androids.
He heads to Hitachi’s vaunted research labs to see the machines - robot helpers and autonomous vehicles - that the company thinks will take care of Japan’s senior citizens in the years to come. And he hangs out with a host of eccentric characters from robotics hobbyists to the world’s most prolific inventor-an 88-year-old man who claims to have invented both the floppy disk and the most stimulating sex potion known to man.

The professors at Kyoto University have the best technological minds in the country! It was so great to have the world headquarters for Nintendo in the city!
2016... almost 4 years later and I wonder if the robots voice has changed... that was an interesting story!
I like how the students came up with the robots voice sound and eventually will improve and change throwout time!!
Japan is such a beautiful country
Peter Yep, My Country Is one of The best ever.
i'm sure all you white weaboos say that.
It is time (covid19) to bring these eAssistants out to the poeple, so they can help building the future.
Looks like Westworld is still way off, but we're moving in the right direction anyway :D
Westworld is way off - that level of technology is a long way off...
haha love it dude
Lmao it took a hundred years to push computers from something embryonic into something that we can't even call a newborn. At the rate technology is developing we might be able to have smth similar to WW in 200 years from now. Android apocalypse will be outrun by global warming, the development of AI will have been for nothing. Keep dreaming.
Great documentary about Japan state of the art on androids. Well done!
Amintas Neto Yep my home Country Is The best ever, lovely Japan.
James Franko Do you Got proof?
James Franko Just as I thought, You ai’nt Got real proof, You were’nt There when I was In Yokohama, You ai’nt seen my birth certificate also, You don’t know what I look like, So your wrong, I am Japanese.
James Franko You did’nt speak any Japanese because There Is’nt any wrote out here In This post, And really I Got better Thing’s To do Then have To argue with an immature dipshit who want’s To keep drama stirred up.
@James Franko Why from Vietnam ?!
Japan is starting a new industry that will quickly spread. The use of automation to take care of the aging population. The customers won't stop coming.

15:58 on bookshelf:
"Erotic Grotesque Nonsense"
12:30 "Japanese never do that." Um, why do i want to call bs on this after watching the anime Chobits?
Hideki was just a "little" attracted to Chi wasn't he? If they ever get far enough along to be like the Persocom's in Chobits, things might get just a tad bit complicated...... for me at least! lol
13:58 - I am particularly impressed that Takashi has a Hatsune Miku 3D printed sculpture on the table with the robots! Now THAT is one I'd like to see be made into a real AI robot! And ahhhh, can I get some Love Jet? Please? It's for research. I swear!
@Bloomberg - 1:35 "An explosion of people and food"?
That was Hiroshima, not Tokio.
"Werwolf guitarist."
Actualy it's a yokai guitarist.
But other then that, this is awesome!
All of this tech is amazing!
And Hello Kitty is cute and all, but I prefer Hagu from honey and clover!
Nerd. But I was thinking the same thing
@@joshb8976 Thanks!
The guy blatantly kissed that robot lol
I agree 💯💯💯
loooooooool
Maybe the Robot will kiss back ?
a little pause means everything
I bet he did way more! 😂
Love watching hello world! excellent presenter.
The robot is cute but tried to get directions from it at Haneda ANA terminal airport and no so smart as they lead you to believe
well, they did say "rolling around and looking cute is about the extent of what they can do" I assume [for now, hopefully] should be added in there at the end.
robotic’s Is still In It’s infancy, give It more time.
@@erinasherton8411 I don't know....have you read "Harry Potter and the portrait of what appears to be a pile of ash"? That was written by an AI.
You're still there?
Very interesting. At, 8:08, That android totally said, "Thank you". To be honest, I'm not really sure how i feel about AI. I feel as it's disquieting.
Where can I buy his LOVE JET product??
kirayamatogokusasuke eBay .
19:05 "Because everyone like child."
*FBI O P E N U P*
I'm freaking out right now at 6.20 to 28 it's like it anticipated what he was going to do before he moves his fingers it did it
That robot really just squared up with that dude 😂
Hahahahahah that's funny the robot with the white hands is like the really drunk guy at the party. With those blissful hand movements and soft hands.
Do you guys get your music written for the video or is it stock?
The level that Japanese accomplished in robotic technology and other areas is undoubtedly impressive. Their commitment and education inspire me as an Engineering student. However, as a professor of mine said once at my Masters Degree in linguistics, when we were over complimenting Japanese people, *they didn't have any robot to manage that nuclear accident years ago*. 🤷🏾♂️ Hence, not just them, but all of us, should deeply reflect on what are we applying our highly advanced technology and precious time in. You may spend a life in building bots and there might be no robot to save you and your beloved ones when you most need it.
For technology Japan is always best.
Sajib Moral Yep, My Country Is The Greatest at It.
The elephant in the room here: can "Erica" the cute Japanese AI robot be programmed as a "pleasure models" for Japan's aging, increasingly atomized population?
I think people underestimate the physical needs that the elderly and the disable need that goes into having a companion. I think it would be a great idea. It isn't about perversion as some would like to turn this. It is about quality, dignity and fulfilling a life. Humans love to complicate things, while robots would just see it as no different as changing a diaper, feeding, or pushing the wheelchair to take the human out for a walk to breath fresh air.

Nas the American rapper appears in a music video that was shot entirely in the TeamLab art installation.
@aCvc
Very interesting, funny and informative - exciting work :)
Great video series :)
That's Dr Nakamats "suction device" is used all over the oil industry, at least here in Aberdeen! Hard to believe it and the floppy were invented by the same guy.
I rrrRoooovvee Japanese velly velly much!!
lolol..he said "takes it to their unnatural extreme",I didn't want to say it out loud myself!.....hahahaha....lmao
Erica at 10:11 calling bs... She's his bang bot. Giving him the bedroom eyes.
Mr.Ishiguro: .*sweats in japanese*. she's like a Ferrari
Erica: 12:58 .*Smiles like a doughnut*.
Japan is the coolest country in the world. So in touch with their ancient culture but still able to not get stuck and dominated by it
Google made me do it The Two exist peacefully.
creepy robot sounds possesed 8:08😯
I think she said she likes you..Robot -NOOO
Great doc! Thanks!
The word, "Japan", written over Korea...3:07
After several decades, I wonder how Japan feels about being blown away by Boston Dynamics in just a couple of years.
Tbh I expected something like Boston dynamics from Japan. But funny you say that cuz Boston dynamics is owned by the Japanese giant softbank
@Neil Tyson what is true?
They might be owned NOW by SoftBank, but they were not just a few years ago.
Mr. Vance sounds like a young Morley Safer. That's a huge compliment.
Thanks for uploading videos
And updating to me.
Sharing your experiences
Beat satisfaction.
"...to find people who are trying to wake the country up from its technological slumber." I did not know that technological slumber meant light years ahead of the US in technology.
Have you seen the stuff coming out of Boston Dynamics lately?
@@EnDSchultz1 yeah that's more advanced than even Japan
Wow, this was so, so interesting! I want one of those baby robots!!!
Nice, Miku at 14:07. Should've seen her in action.
@ 21;08 - THAT OF GETTING TO via a robo car - all very well - but human body does require exercise . Chinese got that sussed tai chi , plus gran- parks - low impact exercise machines , whilst there also kiddie parks
Dude, it's a Hannya demon strumming a shamisen, not a "werewolf guitarist". -.-;
She's cute and she will remain cute.
That robot totally did the same moves as his creator with its arm while he was speaking o.o
amazing!
"...rather than taking on people who don't want change, I work to inspire people who want change. "
Dr Nakamats is Sureal
5:00 Mad scientist alert XD he got a very, overly passionate stare but kind of mad scientist as well x) would love to get to work with him tho.
How can I contact you about cooperation?
TEAM LAB!!!!!
That first robot Ai comes straight from the uncanny valley.
Emiew looks like that creepy thing from black mirror ssn5 preview. Bet Hitachi not gonna be happy with Charlie Brooker
where's ZOZO Town?!
i've met a Pepper Robot at a rest stop. he offered to give a tour of the restaurants at the rest stop. i turn him down but i asked to take his photo. so he struck a pose Vogue like a total badass. it was rad. unfortunately he had a 10 year old Japanese boy voice. weird. it would be better if it had a female voice with a husky jukujo voice. Jukujo's or mid-aged women are highly under represented in AIs of the world.
Really great series :)
0:40 There is no way that guy is a Yakuza. What a weird thing to think...
How many robots are blending in with humans?
I have a nephew who is married to a Japanese woman who teaches French while he teaches English!
I vote 2020 Worlds First Earth Robot President.
Thank's Ashlee, you made my day. Your face in that glorified electric mobility scooter 'classic', more of stuff like that please...:-)
I loved you book on Elon Musk, by the way it was excellent. Ever thought about doing a book about ARM, All Android devices use ARM processors. Used to be UK's largest tech company before it was bought out by the Japanese. It's got an interesting history with assorted bunch of startup geeks, Steve Furber & Sophie Wilson Etc...
that guy probably kissed the robot and much more... LOL "this is Japan" HAHAH EXACTLY lol im jk
she might revenge from him soon by putting her arm into his as :D
can Erica use Affective computing like Affectiva's AffdexMe app to read people's emotion?
Does Erica have an internal monologue or an inner voice? Most people “think“ in words which an internal monologue would give her. some people think in visualizations. others in patterns. Most people think in a little of all of the above.
Does Erica recognize herself in a mirror? A self-awareness test could be given to her like they test Primates with a red dot on their forehead and a big Mirror.
Head transplants onto flying robot bodies is the way to go.
Someone ask the Dr. If he wants to buy my invention??
Ash should test that Love Jet
Left out confirmation ty
@08:08 "Help me"
That Guy needs to catch smart lol
I caught 8 Pokemon on my first night at Akihabara under a budget of 5000 Yen :D
26:10 WTF?
Takashi ?
Wow reminds me of the Rock'em sock'em in my 80s. Does not look like much progress
This guy didn't invent floppy disk officially. You needed to check facts before publishing.
I think they made it very clear that they don't believe him to be the inventor of the floppy disc, the CD or the fay machine.
Reference from Wikipedia related to this: A Japanese inventor, Yoshiro Nakamatsu, claims to have invented core floppy disk technology, and in 1952, registered a Japanese patent for his invention. He further claims to have later licensed 16 patents to IBM for the creation of the floppy disk. However, there is no evidence independent of Nakamatsu's assertions that supports these claims.
Done
I'm fine with just the wind-up robots.
MachoCat lol.
nice one
Robots can build Robots so human engineers are obsolete.
9:41 yes it is the most beautiful face in the world
Hello Technology
Japan is 3020 right now XD
It's like never never land.
I coulda been a contender!
4:29 not a werewolf.. not a guitar..
Trangle triangle center robotics . Genome therapy and gurgles nano implants androids . Moshi Mumu Robotic Nike . Science and technology from Euroasian developers. SL AI SI
4:20
anyone see the alien at 20:07????? whaaaat????
"and warewolf gutairist" shows how much he knows about Japan, and warewolfs fr that matter. Thats a classic Demon mask or face, they have had that design for hundreds of years in Japan, if you had the slightest interest in learning about Japan you would know thats not a fucking wafewolf. Fuck, I don't think he knows what a warewold looks like.
12:04 that is creepy dude.
So this is what Brendan Frasier is doing now
Seems strange waking up to a robot. Of course, the Japanese are Extremely Innovative and Creative.
Of course, they will still have to work.
To maintain their health and a form of enjoyment of life. 🤔
The technology will do the manual labor, freeing up time for better trained human beings.
In the maintenance of robotic technology.
Any ideas from anyone in the comments please?
Thank you all.🙄
you don't need Kitty-chan/Hello Kitty to be in Japan. Just saying. i've been living in Japan over the past 20 years. i've met a Pepper Robot at the Koga City rest stop. He offered to show me around the food court. He struck a pose for a photo shot. i saw it once more but after that not once more.🖖 😭☮️🖖🤖 Peace with the machines.
Why did you put subtitles? For some reason it feels a little bit racist. His English is pretty fine!
Japanese think of Doraemon and Astroboy when they think of robots. Westerners think of Terminators. Someone's been brainwashed by Hollywood.
Why can't some people distinguish between unconscious and subconscious? When you are unconscious you cannot perceive input... ;-)
11:09 So lifelike. Just like a real woman.
business men buying out others ideas, he dont invent them he buys then and clams them as his own.
Creepy Robot, Where's my flame thrower?
long ways to go.
Skynet is real
