  • This Danish Cord Bench was my first time weaving, and it was great learning a new skill, which was also quite a meditative process! This project is part of the Wood Whisper Guild, tutored by Caleb James, a renowned woodworker & chairmaker, specialising in Danish Cord.
The bench is make of oak, although the long sides are maple as they are fully covered. The joinery is a stepped or haunched mortise & tenon - I used my domino jointer to make the mortises, but Caleb uses a drill press in the course...
The finish is Fiddes Hard Wax Oil White, although Caleb uses a traditional Danish Soap finish
Although it appears a time consuming process, once the technique & flow is established, you can progress through the weaving pretty quick. It is however quite tough on the fingers! Now I have the technique though, I will absolutely adapt this process & skill into my future furniture design work...
The Wood Whisper Guild is an excellent resource & the courses are very professional

Beautiful piece. I teach furniture making at a college in Arizona and one of my students has several mid century danish pieces of furniture made of teak. Teak furniture is hard to find new as it’s all custom made and He wanted four stools of teak with woven seats so he made them. He made one out of Poplar $3 a bf before building the teak ones $40 a bf. He has sense made 7 foot dining table, an entry table, and several other pieces. He enjoyed the weaving very much and said the same thing you said.

Do you happen to remember which size domino cutterhead you used to make the mortises and can you add some more detail on how you did them? I bought the WWG plans but would like to use my Domino to make the mortises

For a higher precision bench, use a lead screw instead of threaded rod

Your bench came out great! I purchased the project from the woodwhisperer guild and was wondering if you could share your layout for cutting the mortises with the domino. I have a domino machine and would like to use it like you did for cutting mortises instead of the drill press. From your video I cannot determine your domino settings. Thank you

So I drew a centre-line, and came down 1mm on height adjuster (6mm bit on domino) - then flipped the piece over to achieve a 10mm mortise - did everything at 12mm depth setting, and longer mortises at 28mm depth setting, making my tenons slightly shorter to accommodate. Middle setting on domino gives about a 25mm (1") slot, so slighthly overlapped the slots to get the 48mm - set everything up on a test piece & dial in the domino before the actual pieces ;-)
