The persona series is one of those games where literally any random battle can either go smooth as butter or just turn into a complete shit show and all you can do is sit there, screaming at your monitor or T.V while you watch the party get wiped.

p5 definitely ironed some of that out--i felt like on normal, the difficulty was basically perfect, you never lose a standard battle unless you make a stupid mistake and its usually recoverable. bosses and mini-bosses still felt challenging, but i never felt like i had to grind to beat them (so long as i did some mementos stuff in between palaces). funny enough, royal brought back some of that randomness, but its also pretty easy compared to the older ones.

    • @Maradrafts
      @Maradrafts Год назад +4

I'm only midway through my first P5 playthrough but I've been having the same feeling, and since I'd played P4 and part of P3 (until my Vita data got damaged), similarly dismissed it as "yeah, I know how this works". On second thought though, there seems to be less merciless RNG occurences on non-boss mobs than in the previous games. Some of the Confidant perks seem more generous, as well, especially in Royal. You also have more ways of crafting really bulky Personas. Feels like you're more easily prepared, and can get into Palaces with more failsafes as in previous entries's dungeons (Conversely, the bosses feel trickier and more involving than their P4 equivalents at the same stages.) I'm a pretty casual player and a far cry from a strategist, so please take everything with a grain of salt, but that's been my experience, as well!

I was lucky enough to be one of the first North American reviewers to cover P3 and P4. Back then, barely anyone knew what Persona was. But playing through P3, I knew Atlus was on to something special. So when the P4 press copy was up for grabs, I immediately jumped on the assignment. I kind of lost track of time; I burned through everything up until finishing the Shadow Teddie fight in a single sitting, then finished the game later in the week. It was one of my favorite experiences as a reviewer. Even if P5 is easy, it's amazing to see how far the series has come in such a short time.

@@boxofwood5514 Oh, that's a long story. There were a lot of factors in my personal and professional life, but it culminated in me having to go to therapy for severe depression in 2013. I had to take a hard, honest look at who I was, what my priorities were, etc. I realized that I didn't want to spend another decade of my life sitting in front of a screen, pushing buttons, and playing through slightly upgraded iterations of the games that I'd already played. I was disillusioned with the industry; in-depth analysis and criticism was giving way to clickbait with a score tacked on at the end, the entire AAA studio system was bound to collapse eventually, and gamers just seemed angrier and more unsatisfied as time passed. It was just plain toxic. Most importantly, I realized that I'd been using games as a form of escapism. But I didn't want my life to amount to a list of articles, nor did I want to live vicariously through fictional worlds. I needed something more... _real._
So, I walked away. Left my day job and overall career in banking, too. Started wandering the streets of San Francisco, reignited my passions for hiking, travel, and nature. Apparently, kids these days refer to it as "touching grass." Because no matter how many times you climb Death Mountain in Zelda, it'll never replace the feeling of summiting a real mountain. I also picked up photography as a way to keep a record of my travels. First it was just around the city. Then around California, then other states, then other countries. By the end of 2022, I'll have been to 31 countries and 6 continents. It's amazing how far you can go when you're not spending a small fortune on new consoles or a Steam backlog that you'll likely never complete. Turns out I have an adventurous streak, too. Beaches, forests, mountains, jungles, glaciers, volcanoes, ancient ruins, UNESCO sites... You name it, I'm up for it. It's interesting seeing real life locations vs their video game counterparts; I was first introduced to the temples of Tikal via Sonic Adventure, as well as architecture from the backgrounds in Street Fighter as a kid. A few decades later, and I crossed the real ones off the bucket list. I also went back to college remotely during the pandemic and earned my 2nd and 3rd degrees, this time in Environmental Science and Geography. So now I'll be able to explore and learn more about the world in new ways.
Anyway, the site that I wrote for is long defunct. You can find a backup listing of my works on GameFAQs. I wrote over 700 reviews in analytical/persuasive essay format, no clickbait. I amassed over 2 million hits, and won their Review of the Month contest over 30 times. I still hold the site record for that despite being retired for years. I occasionally still update their cheats and secrets database as well. However, viewership started to wane due to the advent of social media. People's attention spans drastically reduced, and everyone shifted their focus to video productions. I don't play games nearly as often as I used to, but I'll still get something if it piques my interest. My days of 100 hour-long RPGS are over. If there's a good sale on some fighting games, I'll probably jump on it. I can still play a mean game of 3rd Strike too. My work can be found here:
      gamefaqs.gamespot.com/community/Polymathic/contributions/reviews
TLDR: I left because I realized that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life sitting in front of a screen, pushing buttons, and playing slightly upgraded iterations of the same games. My life had to amount to more than just escapism via fiction. I needed something more real. I walked away, traveled all over the world, and went on all kinds of adventures. Now I study Environmental Science and Geography. You can find my work (over 700 essays, no clickbait!) in the link above.

      1 supply’s are still weak
2 your party isn’t all that strong
3 the bathhouse is the only dungeon that goes on for eleven floors and each floor is huge.
4 the enemy’s hit hard and don’t have any weaknesses.
Finally your current party composition isn’t very balanced at this stage.
Yukiko is really weak in the early game yet is absurdly strong in the late game.

Also, I had no idea that in previous persona games the dungeons were randomly generated. and honestly, is that if all P3 is like this in the same dungeon, I don't think it can, on top of that there is the problem of not being able to control the companions. Compared to 3 and 5, I find this one to be one of the easiest. The beginning is really tough, but as you progress, it becomes increasingly easier. When you complete a battle, there's a chance of evolving a persona's skill, and you can obtain very powerful skills early in the game. Not to mention that the characters receive good equipment from The Reaper. The optional boss is also much easier compared to those in 3.

I think p4 had some of the most brutal early game as far as certain bosses, and all of the game's endgames were so easy that there's no reason to really compare them. Like P5R does have some really annoying enemies in the added palace, but you can just summon Izanagi no Okami and almighty your way through it. But I think the problem is that the difficulty in those brutal p4 bosses was difficult in a way that was more frustrating than fun. P5 definitely felt more fair, so hopefully P6 is able to keep that feeling and also delivery on a better sense of challenge for those who want it.

I'm still on my first playthrough of Golden (I beat the original P4 a long time ago), and the Pixie I made simply through the after battle bonuses is comically strong. The only reason why I'm even still facing challenges is because I picked the hardest difficulty for Golden, and even then, only the bosses are an issue at this point. I also played Persona 5 Royal before playing Golden and these are my thoughts:
    1. I like the fact that in Golden, physical attacks don't have subcategories like 3 and 5 do; 5 has physical and gun and 3 has slash, strike, and pierce. in 4 Golden, there's only ONE type of physical attack and if you resist, null, repel or absorb it, there's nothing else to think about.
    2. In some ways, having two less elemental affinities made things a little simpler. In P5R, you've got two subcategories of physical attacks and EIGHT different types of magic: Fire, Ice, Wind, Electric, Psychokinesis, Nuclear, Bless, and Curse. In 4 Golden, Psychokinesis and Nuclear aren't included and more often than not, you only have to worry about enemies being weak to four of the main elements with the occasional weakness to light, dark, and physical attacks.
    3. It did feel a little more shallow without ability to baton pass but maybe that's because I had gotten so used to using it during P5R so take that with a grain of salt.
    4. I like the system in 4Golden for skill cards a lot more than how you get them in P5R; shuffle time drops and taking personas to Chagall cafe all for the purpose of turning them to Velvet room where you can repeatedly purchase them without limit (as long as you have the in game currency) and use them to customize your personas however you wanted.
    5. Confidants & Social Links--Overall, players are given more leeway in 5 Royal to max out all 23 confidants; even on a first run, you could max social stats and all confidants and have entire month of December for free time to go to the jazz club, play mini-games, meditate at temple, or go fishing. In 4 Golden, there's a lot less leeway and managing time must be done very carefully; it took me four tries to max all social links in a single play through using NG+ and I highly doubt I'd be able to do it on a fresh game like I did in Royal.
Having said all that, I greatly enjoy playing P4G; I've earned everybody's ultimate armor and weapons, maxed the stats of my best personas and customized them to my preferences/specifications and don't regret the $20 I spent on it back in January. It's a keeper for sure.

having gone from 4 golden to 5 than 5R, i agree with a lot of these but i still definitely prefer subtypes of phys damage (moreso gun and hit, not pierce, slash, strike, thats too much) and shadow negotiation. the leeway with confidants is also really nice, P4G flaired up my real life anxiety when it came to deciding what to do my first time around lol. i wish they did more with skill cards in P5 though. overall i prefer 5 or 5R, they both feel simultaneously much richer and denser with content and more accessible at the same time.

As someone who's first persona game was 5, lemme tell you, it wasn't the actual fighting that got me on 4. It was adjusting to the dungeons. There's no way to just press a button and ambush a shadow, there's no "safe rooms", and no way to swap party members mid-dungeon. (Swapping party members still frustrates me even now. Like, Teddie's outta SP and I need a healer! Hello? Yukiko?)
Especially attacking shadows, though. My first playthrough, like all the way to Maru-Q, I kept getting ambushed over and over again because it was difficult adjusting to the sword. (Especially when, on 5, like I said, get close enough and you can just press a button and ambush them.)
So, I think that 5 is the easiest of the games, but sheer will and determination made me stick it out on 4 and it's now my favorite one. :)

Resource management is important, so phys attacks are very good because it's cheaper to cast heal spells every few fights than use elemental spell everytime you attack. Later on you can get regen hp/sp passive which makes trash mobs even more manageable.
Rise also heals your hp and sp. She won't show up until later, but after she joins it'll be MUCH easier because you can use more spells, provided you do her s links of course.
Make sure to use buff and debuff in boss fights, pay attention on when they would run out. Always make sure the MC has something to hit the boss' weakness, and give him null elements. Heal and use items, this isn't the game where you can get away without them.
Usually, the newest personas you can craft is the most useful for that chapter.
tldr make full use of what the game has to offer. 4 and 5 aren't actually that much different, 5 simply never asked you to use the mechanics outside of okumura.
By the endgame it would be just p5 without baton pass.
Hell, I'm so bored I ended up making a super izanagi from scratch just because I can

It's just comes down to different battle benefits and how Persona 5 encourages to talk to shadows to get Personas while Persona 4 encourages to kill everything quickly to trigger Shuffle Time which in of itself is a game to get the most out of the cards you are given. The big differences are dungeon layouts, Confidant/Social Link systems and talking/shuffle time. All of these systems work well in their respective games so it's just a matter of perspective of which you are trying to get but it all boils down to killing Shadows quickly with whatever they are weak with and All-Out-Attack

Like, not as in a normal rpg, but as a rpg multiplied by 3), but then I decided to try Persona 4. It is SO good!! I love the characters, the songs, the scenario, the storyline and the gameplay. Healing like crazy and raging everytime a boss blocks the only spell they're weak to (I'm looking at you, Dark Yukiko). I got invested in it like crazy, I played it for 3~5 hours straight everytime I decided to play and never got bored. Sadly... My computer crashed right before the ending and I lost my save. I plan to play it again and see the final, but I had like 70 hours of gameplay or more (I really like to grind levels lololol). I hope anyone into the Persona franchise could give a chance to Persona 4, even if it's the only one that is not that dark (compared to all others, including Shinmegami Tensei), but I think that's what it makes so special. Even the color palette is different and brighter. I really really really love this game and could talk for hours about it

@@Sonicboy71 the originals are harder cause they're still closer to old school RPGs, I think. The originals are hard, but as one who likes RPGs in general, I don't think the originals are as hard as smt or the first two (technically 3) entries in the persona series.

The best music of the Persona series, in my opinion, is in this game, I still listen to them, they are very special to me.

I finished it yesterday on Very Hard while finishing every palace in the game in a single day. The only "cheat" I used is looking up enemy affinities. By the time I got to Naoto's palace I was so fed up from repeatedly losing my progress that I removed the penalty where it sends you back to the title screen upon dying. I don't think that lowering the amount of EXP you get is a good way of adding difficulty, because the only thing it actually does it artificially inflate the playtime. The final grind for Izanami was incredibly tedious. I initially fought her with most of my party members at Lv 77, but they always died to her Kuro Ikazuchi. So I had to get them all to Lv 90 before finally making it. Though I later realized that I could probably have done it at Lv 85 as well.
One thing you really need to look out for are those suicide bomber dice shadows. Their Last Resort probably caused like 80% of all my deaths. That taught me to always have a Persona with the Trafuri skill with me.
