  • I don't own this; the original realtime video is here • Video . Where station names were omitted, I added them, where they were added, I overlaid them , hopefully not too clumsily. Some shots of drivers and equipment edited out.
A beautiful journey, along the north shore of the Firth of Clyde, swinging north through Faslane naval base, along Loch Long and Loch Lomond, then from Crianlarich up over the remote Rannoch Moor, beside Loch Treig before turning west to drop into Fort William, where the driver swaps ends to drive out west to Mallaig.
Plenty to look at, but here are a few notables:
    01:23: Dumbarton Rock
03:42: Site of former Glen Douglas station
09:27: Corrour Station - the UK's highest and least accessible
11:45: A glimpse of the shoulder of Ben Nevis
13:46: Across Glenfinnan Viaduct, of Harry Potter movie fame
Plus the overall fickleness of Scotland's summer weather.

Thank you for posting this. It is one of the loveliest train journeys in Europe (done the journey at least twice during my hill walking days). It seems that the trees to the left guise the view across Loch Lomond now (I remember one could see it from the train). However we must spare a thought for the navvies who built these lines (and in the whole of the UK too). All the embankments, tunnels and cuttings were done by hand, pick axes and wheelbarrows. I have absolutely no idea how they made the progress they achieved. Extraordinary.

Actually you can't really see Loch Lomond - the train runs up to the head to the west of it, and you might get the barest glimpse on the right after Ardlui and before Crianlarich. Might you mean Loch Gare, after Helensburgh, site of the Faslane naval base?
Thanks for watching and for your comment. I agree about the engineering feats!

Too bad the original video has turned private, dunno the reason why...
