      Yea, I actually had tears in my eyes. And those two were both from San Diego basically. It's like Williams passed the torch to Gwynn so to speak. Gwynn playing for the "Padres" and Ted Williams whose mother is Mexican/Spanish. I mean you can't make this stuff up.

    Yea Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Spahn, and Stan Musial should have been regarded as national treasures. That is what Brazil did with the soccer player Pele.' Brazil didn't allow him to play for football clubs in Europe. Likewise, I wish they didn't miss time due to war. Their statistics would even be greater. Ted never had 200 hits in a season, because they walked him so much (little protection, except for the few years with Foxx). Yea they were trying to get Joe DiMaggio to play with his brother Dom on the Red Sox. How about Warren Spahn (dude was legendary even in his forties)!!

  • @moeball740
    @moeball740 2 месяца назад +1

    The narrator left out an important detail in referencing Ted's 1954 season. 2 rule changes came about as a result:
    1) As mentioned, Ted had the highest batting average in the A.L. that year but didn't get credit for the batting title because he was 14 at bats shy of the required amount of at bats to qualify. At that time the requirement was for a player to reach at least 400 at bats to qualify. They understood that a player should be an everyday regular player to qualify, I mean you don't award a batting title to some guy who went 10 for 20 during the year. Yes he batted .500 but it's way too small a sample size. So it needs to be a regular starting player. What they hadn't considered was someone like Ted who walked way more than anyone else in the league. Yes Ted had fewer than 400 at bats but he had well over 500 plate appearances because of the walks. He clearly was a regular everyday player. So eventually they changed the rule to what it is now, where it is based on plate appearances instead of at bats. Ted caused that change.
    2) Another rule change that came out of that was something that wound up helping Tony Gwynn get a batting title in 1996. The rules now state that you can be short of the plate appearances requirement and still qualify only if the following is true - if the difference between a batter's number of plate appearances and the required number is such that even if the batter had gotten those missing at bats - and made outs in all of them - if his adjusted average still would have been the highest in the league then he wins the title. This also applies to leading in on base % and slugging %. In 1996 Gwynn was short of the required plate appearances but his average was so much higher than anyone else that even his "adjusted" average was the highest in the league.

    • @Cam23
      @Cam23  2 месяца назад

      I appreciate the info, but in the video I did mention he fell 14 at-bats short of qualifying for the batting title. I didn't go into detail about the rule change that year but I also don't mention every single thing I find in my research. Thank you for the feedback!

      Great video Cam! Love your videos🙂⚾... Greatest hitter ever?.... perhaps and if he is then there is little argument... He kind of reminds me of Aaron, in how he is remembered in terms of being on greatest player ever lists, usually it's Willie Mays Bonds (for some) and Ruth...but Williams bridges the era before integration and plays after Robinson broke the color barrier....
      It's a great conversation...I think it's 1.Aaron 2. Mays 3. Ruth 4.T. Williams 5. Mantle 6. S. Musial 7. Cobb this list is no particular order but definitely a good starting point. Again, great video

    Important note. Ted enjoyed his military service and doesn't care if it took away from his baseball career.

      It was actually the contrary, he gritted his teeth and said in an interview during his later years that it stole a portion of his career. Perhaps his answer changed over time but all interviews I watched said that he was not happy at all about it

    It looked like he was sanding the bat. Isn't that shaving a bat?

    • @Cam23
      @Cam23  4 месяца назад

      He was heating it up to get rid of moisture and making the handle easier to grip. Shaving a bat like what you’re thinking of typically involves the end cap and that’s what can increase pop, not the handle and knob

    As you can plainly see, - "Something is rotten in Denmark!". -Ted did almost everything but fielding better than anyone - but really never won an MVP. - (IMO) MVP voting is very over-rated. Who's doing the voting? Is it former ballplayers and managers? - No.- It's the press. And we all know how very much the press really liked Ted Williams.
