came here wanting to switch from m20x to m50x, and i will say this about the m20's. For the price, they are phenomanal. I have used this pair for about 3 years now, and they held up good until now. Eventually, one side's ear band seemed to have unattached itself and ive been spending about 6 months using electrical tape to hold it in place (im a frugal man). Drivers wise, they are amazing for the price. Feel as if the low-end feels a bit more aggressive compared to my studio monitors, as well as the high end being a bit harsh at times. If you're a beginner on a budget, start with the m20x, and if you like them, upgrade in the future, like i am
For anyone who owns a digital keyboard (I have an ES920), I tried the OneOdio A71, ATH-M20x and M40x). I wanted to spend the minimum for headphones and the winner is the M40x. They provided the most natural sound, similar the onboard speakers. The other 2 sets had decent mids and highs but the low keys sounded too artificial and a little punchy. Thanks for the review and good luck to everyone
Agreed, the M40X is much better than the M50X for mixing. The M50X frequency response is not that flat so not really good for mixing. Many people think that they made it worse. The M40X was / is for me the go. Better than also the M70X where the High end is so bad...
I had the M40X for a year, it snapped at the swivelling hinge and I got a warranty return. I then got a pair of beyerdynamics which I decided were uncomfortable and didn't sound good enough to justify it. I then went with the m50x which is the best choice of the lot and haven't regretted it. they're more comfortable, have better build quality and sound similar to the m40x if not a little clearer. Not having them both at the same time means I haven't done a side-by-side comparison but I don't miss my m40x
Have used M50x for about 5-6 yrs now. Yup, same ones all that time. I only just needed to replace the ear pads today. Not only do they sound great, but they also last a LONG time! So glad I got them instead of the other ones I was looking at.
I've actually had the m20x for the same period of time and they're still great, especially given the price. When/if those break down I'll def upgrade to something else from this m line
My m30x's finally bit the dust after almost six years. Left side has some distortion in the low end. Just don't know which one in the lineup I want to upgrade to...
Good Luck bro! I"m waiting for my m40x that should arive in 2 days. My other pair was a ath t300😊 I hope to be amazed by the sound of the new ones! Now I'm working only on m-audio bx5 speakers..
are they any different from each other in terms of sound? i heard from some people that the BT version has some coloration making them less flat than the original
I like that the ATH-M40x swivels and I love the fact that you can detach the cable and that it includes the coiled one. I have a set of SteelSeries that swivel that way and believe it or not, it makes it easier to put on or take off even with one hand. Also makes it easier to hang flush to my wall. Of course my SteelSeries are much more light and comfortable, but I use those for everyday use on my laptop. They also have the removeable cable and this is awesome because you can use any cable you want (any type, any length). I currently am using a coiled "griffin" cable I had around and it has worked awesome cause i don't have cables on the floor or on my lap. I own a pair ATH-M20x ( I use these for recording and editing my voice overs) and although the long (attached) cable may come in handy at some point, I usually work at my desk recording voice overs and the cable just dangles on the floor or I have to wind it up and hang it from a pushpin on the wall. I have at times (and by that I mean all the time) run over the cable with my chair and I have to say that it has held up fine over the years. The other thing I don't like about the cable, however, is that it has become hard and brittle near the headphones gradually getting worse over time (about 2 feet now). This makes storing them harder and it's just annoying. Also the cushions are starting to crack, but that I did expect of course. They sound great though. I will attempt to replace the cable at some point and of course the cushions should be relatively easy to replace if need be. I have a couple of older pairs of AT headphones from the early 2000s. They were about $70 ea and also sound amazing, but the cables started to fail. I need to replace those cables or connectors eventually. I've been looking to replace my ATH-M20x for a couple of years now and I am leaning towards the ATH-M40x just because of the swivel action, and the detachable cable option and the fact that it comes with 2 and one is coiled, perfect for using at my desk. PS Also the ATH-M20x are starting to crack (the plastic) where the metal headband meets the plastic on headphones.

I've bought a pair and I haven't tried them yet as they are being delivered. What would you say is the least impressive thing about them? Also do they sound alright with a phone ?
@@TheRedbeefburger If you like your music to be very bass-y like some people you'll be a bit disappointed, though I wouldn't describe them as flat so much as "clean" (they're studio headphones after all, they're designed so you can hear the most balanced sound possible for recording purposes), also they do get uncomfortable after a few hours if you wear your headphones a lot. They sound fine with phones, no different than they do with computers, but the jack is pretty chunky so you might not be able to insert them properly if you're using a cover. Overall though like I said, you'll have a hard time finding a better set of earphones at that price range.
m40x are more neutral, but if you want more "natural" bass for enjoui the music, the m50x are perfect. (I got two m40x and always need a bit more amount of bass)
But for mixing you want the sound to be more neutral so you know what you are acutally listening to. The 'Natural" bass is obviosuly an altered frequency.
I just bought the M50X and I'm happy. Very comfortable, they sound amazing, very crisp and clean audio. These headphones are great for music production & audio/video editing 👌I do recommend them 💯
From my perspective start of at least with the 40s. the extra 30 bucks gets you a lot better mid range and balance. From there it depends on how much of an audiophile you are.
Was taking a peek to get an idea of the other models. Got a m50x that is currently having a driver replaced. But DAAAMMMM you really are replying to all the comments! 👍M50X's are great heckin love em.
I've been using the 20s for two years now and I don't recommend them.(for my guitar amp and my mixing sessions) sound is good, noise canceling also good but. You see the materials are not the best and they overheat in less than an hour. You get cracks in the fake leather and you won't be able to soften it with leathercare products. Sorry for the bad review, I wish I bought something better.
I plan to get a budget pair for bass guitar practice mainly (but would consider invest higher for general use). is it worth it to go above the m20x? local prices: m20x: 70 usd m30x: 105 usd m40x: 150 usd
@@MohammedAmanMusic The m20x and 30x are rated at 50 ohms that require slightly more power to drive them than the m40x and m50x whcih are 32 ohms, thats why they are not so loud. They would perform much better if they were connected to a headphone amp or a stereo amplifier in the house which has an headphone connector.
Seriously wanted a video on this... I was going to change my headphone and was confused. Now I have the answer and thanks to Edward Smith.. Thanks bro...💗💗
I've hand the M40x for about 4 years. Best headphones on the market in my opinion for the enthusiast consumer. Just had to replace the pads recently but other than that the sound has been phenomenal in every application I've used it for. Are there better sounding headphones? Absolutely, but you are going to have to pay a lot more to get them. The M40x sit perfectly at in the balance of cost, performance, and features.
Hey thanks for the video, Im looking for a headset for locating those pops and clicks in voiceovers that you cannot always hear but can be highly noticeable on some players. Would the m30x be good for that? looking to avoid spending too much for such a small requirement.
I'm having trouble deciding between the m40x and the m50x for my home studio mixing purposes. I'm willing to shell out a bit more if the 50s are that much better / worth it. Anybody familiar with both?
Don't buy them, they sound good but materials are low quality, the hinge mechanism breaks, the earpads are uncomfortable and weak you'll need to replace them, nothing in this m line is of quality

@@eitanyochanan8586 I'm glad for your great experience with the previous line, but all the Mn.x line that the OP is asking for is really a waste of money, this time is better to save some more money and go for something better especially there's a desire for comfort and durability, the cheap pads don't allow you to experience the very good drivers of the 40 Mx the 50, 60 and 70 Mx are flatter by design, this are studio headphones while the 40mx were targeted as DJ headphones but for studio use, however the won't last and you will expend valuable time repairing them or surfing the web for alternatives, or demanding some help from the Audio Technica guarantee, it's not worth the hassle.

Ive had the m30x over a year now. Really tight and hurt my ears even after breaking them in for so long. Good sound for the price still not comparable to something like the dt990/770. If your mixing go with dt990/770s instead of m50x
This person speaks truth. The m30x has caused me tremendous pain relating to both my ears as well as my jaw (TMJ). Finally grabbed a pair of 770s for mixing which will be so much more comfortable for long sessions.
I got the mx40 recently because the cord on my dt770s has gone out in one ear and the sound is fine, but I miss the comfort of the 770s for sure. I did a lot of research a year and a half ago and it was between the mx50/mx40 and dt770 and I went with the latter. I figured I'd try the former now especially since they're way more affordable and I can replace the cable easier, but the comfort is not comparable at all
Love the M20x. But why is it that when I master with the headphones it sounds loud and great, but when I listen to the mix on my tv, the sound volume is super low. If I raised the db while using the headphones I hear clipping. But if I used that second mix that is louder on my tv, it sounds fine.
Have you tried the m20xbt bluetooth wireless version? They are about the same price as the m40x and im having a hard time to pick either. The convenience of the m20xbt would be nice, but are the sound quality comparable to the m40x's? Pls I need some insights from anyone who have tried both 😭
In the off chance this gets a reply, but which one is better for when you're using it to listen to podcasts? M30x vs m40x, which can you hear the voice/words clearer? Thanks

If you just want a budget option for casual music listen/movie watching/gaming it's hard to go wrong with the M20x, for the price they're fantastic.
@@Sergei_Ivanovich_Mosin Brilliant thank you so much for clarifying :).I was worried that there would be no bass at all
@@TheRedbeefburger Nah, it's there, it's just doesn't have the "umf" a more bass dedicated setup would have.
@@Sergei_Ivanovich_Mosin brilliant, and again thanks for helping me.

m40x are more neutral, but if you want more "natural" bass for enjoui the music, the m50x are perfect. (I got two m40x and always need a bit more amount of bass)
But for mixing you want the sound to be more neutral so you know what you are acutally listening to. The 'Natural" bass is obviosuly an altered frequency.
Thank you I was confused as to which brand and model of new headphones to buy. But not anymore; I’m going all out with the M 50’s.
I just bought the M50X and I'm happy. Very comfortable, they sound amazing, very crisp and clean audio. These headphones are great for music production & audio/video editing 👌I do recommend them 💯
bad for mixing tho, too colored
I just ordered a pair. Hoping I like em, I had an ancient pair of Sonys that finally bit the dust.
Thankyou Edward...... I got the m50x ....Love em and I'm not disappointed with them❤️👍🏻😊😊
Great to hear!
Thankyou Edward😊
hi?
You're headphone still alive?
Top of the notch pitch. Thanks for the info!
From my perspective start of at least with the 40s. the extra 30 bucks gets you a lot better mid range and balance. From there it depends on how much of an audiophile you are.
Do you mean buy m40X?
Plus they have a detachable cable just in case you need to swap out a damaged cable which is why I skipped the 20's and 30's
Just love your reviews bruv
They are dope
Thank you so much!!!
Really needed this vid, probably will pick up the M40Xs soon!
Awesome!!
Was taking a peek to get an idea of the other models. Got a m50x that is currently having a driver replaced. But DAAAMMMM you really are replying to all the comments! 👍M50X's are great heckin love em.
Yeah, I love my M50X’s 🙌🏻
with the 7506 .... m40x ..... m50x ..... in my car my mixes with m40x sound the best :)
I was thinking of the 20s and 30s as im using them for podcasting and they're best for my budget
same here, did you get them?
I've been using the 20s for two years now and I don't recommend them.(for my guitar amp and my mixing sessions) sound is good, noise canceling also good but. You see the materials are not the best and they overheat in less than an hour. You get cracks in the fake leather and you won't be able to soften it with leathercare products. Sorry for the bad review, I wish I bought something better.
I got the 30s and am really liking them as far as sound goes. However I have a bigger head and they make my ears sore after a long session.
20 and 30 suck. Get the 40 at least. Just a few dollars more for muuuuch better results and quality!!
@@confettihunterminus1 no I'm getting them now though I had to get other upgrades for my set up first like an audio interface and a new microphone
I love this review so much. Thank you. ❤ 😊
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
The M20X is a must for beginners
Soooo true!!!
That or oneodio pro 50?
I plan to get a budget pair for bass guitar practice mainly (but would consider invest higher for general use). is it worth it to go above the m20x?
local prices:
m20x: 70 usd
m30x: 105 usd
m40x: 150 usd
I have got m20x they are best for beginners.
I 100% agree!!
@@MohammedAmanMusic your device isn't strong enough for the m20x
@@MohammedAmanMusic The m20x and 30x are rated at 50 ohms that require slightly more power to drive them than the m40x and m50x whcih are 32 ohms, thats why they are not so loud. They would perform much better if they were connected to a headphone amp or a stereo amplifier in the house which has an headphone connector.
Thanks for this awesome review. Very useful. Commenting for the algorithm. Cheers!
Seriously wanted a video on this...
I was going to change my headphone and was confused.
Now I have the answer and thanks to Edward Smith..
Thanks bro...💗💗
Awesome!! I'm glad this video was helpful 👌
There is exactly what I was looking for, honest and comfortable phones.
That was a great review! Amazing set up as well 🔥👌🏿🔥
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻
Wow! All four of them!! Thank you for this! I was wondering what the difference is, but didn't wanna buy the wrong ones.
Always giving THE answer for audio/music questions. Thanks. Every sentence makes sense and reasonable (compared to other reviewers)
We are talking about Audiotechnica M series here, no need to mention complete name each time you refer a model, jus say m20, m30 etc.
Yeah my bad 😂
So what get over it and do your own video
@@carlhuffman6792 u tell em carl
Harsha: we are talking about Audiotechnica M series here, no need to mention “m29, m30 etc.” … jus’ say 20, 30 etc. … … 😜
M40X is the way to go. Soon I'll be getting Philips X2's to perfect the sound signature...balanced is where its at!
you really are everywhere aren't you
why would you need two?
another great review, thanks mate
Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally a South African bro
This comparison is a lot helpful than I expected, Amazing comparison!
Glad it was helpful!
Great review! Thanks mate!
Thanks so much for watching!!!
which is bette for mixing m40x or sony mdr 7506. thanks for reply. you help a lot of people by reviewing those headphones.
Personally, I would go for the ATH-M40X (link in description)
@@EdwardSmithMusic man thanks for reply. well, i'm going to order this tomorrow. 👊
i had both .... when I listen the m40x, i cant take the sony back on my ears lol ......
Liked and Subscribed. Nice job.
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻
Great video, thanks for the good comparison!
Thank you so much for watching!! 🙏🏼
great video boet
I've ordered my Korg Kronos with the M50X ☺️
How did it turn out? I'm trying to decide between the 40s and 50s to use with my Roland keys for practice. Also, Korg Kronos-nice! I'm jealous. :D
will the m20x be good for mixing?
Bro thanks for review 😊😊😊😎👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!!
@@evionlast Dang, well I do own the m30x fora. few years without issue, and from what I've read it seems to have the flattest response of the whole line. (using for mixing). Was looking to upgrade to something that would be better for my purpose. If you have any recommendations please let me know, I'd appreciate it.
@@evionlast You might be right on some points though. Mine ATH-M50 is 12 years of old. Plastic casing hasn't worn out except for the head paddings.
@@evionlast I don't use those series on DJing, just for tracking and analyses. Certains cans are used specifically for a particular cup of tea.
I have studio cans like: 1 Sennheiser's, Sony's, and Shure's.

Yes, definitely 👌🏻 and thanks!!
how about m40x? is it good

Love in white color, found on B&H M-20 XBT model in white wired/wireless, detachable wire, in white...looking great. Thinking now..........
Update: got M20xBT in white, love it. Using for my piano keyboard playing...it IS GREAT sound quality to my opinion!.
Is this your favorite go to hp for recording? I'm looking at the M 40 x. Or do prefer Sennheiser HD 400 Pro? Sony 7506? SRH 1840? Thank you Nice review!❤
I think I Like the M50x more because of the extra cable but I can't afford it, so I'll rather save up for the M40x.
Sucks try offer up just got a brand new looking pair for 60... 60!!! Bro I was so happy
It came with everything as well
M40xs are better than m50xs. Had both of em
Are they more crisp and clear and just overall better
@@Goodman12363M40xs are very good at crispiness in the mid and high range where the 50s have much more bass
@@lukevandervliet913thank you :D
Great to hear. they have a big price gap!
From what I have tested, I agree with the statement. I wish they would bring m40x mkii to market with all the bells and whistles from the 50s but with the audio from the 40s
great video ❤️🔥
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
Just got the 20s today so clear compared to my last headphones
Awesome!!!
M40X is a winner. I know a lot of people like M50X because it kinda too loud, but M40X is decent. My mix has gotten betta with M40X. BTW the ATH M40X they also twist.
They are great!!
just ordered the m40x. Can't wait!
Fantastic choice!!
@@EdwardSmithMusic I have a question. Do you recommend if I will upgrade to scarlett solo 3rd gen from behringer umc202hd

They are quality for the price!!
Another fire video for beginner producers🔥👍👍👍💕
You already know!
Cheers cool video, which ones would you recommend for drummers in a live performance setting???? 😀
Thanks man!! I would go with the M50X's
@@EdwardSmithMusic Cheers man I appreciate your response. Do I need a headphone Amp with these headphones or no? Can I just plug these straight into the desk?. Only reason why I ask is cause I've watched a few videos and some headphones require an headphone amplifier. So was just wondering.... 👍🏽🙌🏽💯
Would audio technica headphones be better for gaming than something like steelseries arctis or brands which focus for gaming gear? I want good sound quality and ability to play games and hear enemy footsteps clearly.
so, did i go with the audio technica? how's your experience so far?
@@onzeisbaaack maybe not ? It kinda Depends. If you’d like flat and clarity response then yes. Yes it’s Good quality but not very bassy. And it does tend to hurt the ears if wearing all day. They’re Perfect for starter musicians with a budget forsure
But they’re pretty damn crisp 👌
Great review 👍👍
Have you checked out the AKG K182's??
If so, which would you choose between the M40X or the K182's?

Woah what a nice comparison 🔥 heard of these for awhile but this video has convinced me to finally buy my own.
Also your videos are great, keep it up king. 👑
For me the M40X are the best! Especially with hm5 pads ;P
They are quality!!
Thank you for this video...I have the 40x...just need to know about the 50x..b.t.w. what does the frame say under it..execution, success, and hustle?
Ive had the m30x over a year now. Really tight and hurt my ears even after breaking them in for so long. Good sound for the price still not comparable to something like the dt990/770.
If your mixing go with dt990/770s instead of m50x
True!
I figured I'd try the former now especially since they're way more affordable and I can replace the cable easier, but the comfort is not comparable at all
ATH M20X IS SO AMAZING FOR BEGINNERS!
True!!
m40x is best in budget.... by the way congo for 36k in advance 🥰
Thank you for supporting this channel as much as you do!! I really appreciate it!!
@@EdwardSmithMusic i will support till my last breath 😉 .... we will grow together...

Hi.Tnx For Video. Which headphones are suitable for electric guitar amplifier for metal Music (Please introduce the model
(
M50 is my dream !
Pls I need some insights from anyone who have tried both 😭
The 40s will sound WAY BETTER just get the 5 dollar Bluetooth adapter you plug into the 40xs ez
What is the best series for mixing acoustic guitar sir?
Do those closed headphones work to practice playing drums or are the vic firth better?
i can't thank you enough for this video.
In the off chance this gets a reply, but which one is better for when you're using it to listen to podcasts? M30x vs m40x, which can you hear the voice/words clearer? Thanks
Both headphones allow you to here good detail. The M40X just offer a bit more low end (bass) and a few more accessories + comfort
Please do a video on dt 990 pro
I'll see what I can do!!
