The days when the great race as Touring Cars all makes an models in the same race. Drivers having to negotiate traffic, lapping slower cars pure racing testosterone. Mopar wedge small block V8 instead of the 6. Has won a couple of races which the 6 could never manage against the 650hp+ of the other cars. I helped build Tony Karanfilovski's #88 Mustang, these cars are nothing like they were in period. Apart from the various engine sizes amongst the Manufacturers, They are basically NASCAR running gear under the shells. The gearboxes are a G-Force GSR box, The Diff is a custom 9" with quick removal centres for ratio changes at the track. Brakes upfront were floating hat rotors with Brembo 6 pot calipers and 4 spot calipers at the rear. I remember painstakingly getting the measurements and setting up the tramp bars for the Diff and at the first test session Glenn Seton after not even completing 1 lap got us to remove them. He was just incredible to work with. It was an absolute joy to be in the pits and at the track with these guys. The TCM series had great camaraderie. I'm just thankful that I got to be a part of it.

Blue car is a Chrysler Valiant VF Pacer. They were a locally modified version of the US Chryslers, and had a 225ci slant-6, 2-barrel carb and 3-speed gearbox. Not sure about the "hemi" comment by one of the commentators, as the slant-6 with hemi heads wasn't introduced until the following model, the VG, which featured a 245ci hemi slant-6, and with the E34 option a hotter camshaft and a 4-barrel carby. They were available as a 4-door sedan and 2-door hardtop.
However, these were not the ultimate sporty Aussie Valiants. The following model, the Australian-designed VH, saw the introduction of a new 2-door coupe, the Charger. The sporting version was the E38 R/T Six Pack, which saw the 265ci Hemi-6 fitted with triple Weber dual sidedraft carbs and a pretty hot cam. However, it was still limited with a 3-speed gearbox until the E49 Charger, with as well as a fourth gear had an even hotter camshaft and tubular exhaust headers, and challenged the bigger V8s for performance. At their release they were fastest production 6-cylinder car in the world and basically the only locally-made car that was quicker than them was the Ford Falcon XY 351 GTHO Phase 3.

My thoughts also about the 225.
However it seems this series allows fitting of different spec motors from the same manufacturer.
Went 265, 318 and now 400 it seems. Rules allowed changes to keep even racing in the field.
Not well publicised rules to help with the underdog does good excitement and encourage variety.

Hey Ian, this series has gone from strength to strength over the years. John Bowe, Jim RIchards and Steven Johnson ( son of Dick Johnson ) have raced in the Supercars/ Touring Car Championship series for many years. John Bowe is a former champion and 2 time Bathurst 1000 winner, as is Jim RIchards who has won the great race 7 times. These cars have been fairly well modified to be more reliable as well as allowing for a little bit more parity across the board. I have a couple of mates who run in this championship, one of which is a title contender.

The cars that they are building as "replicas" are worth a fortune in themselves. The #88 car is a genuine Boss 351 1969 Mustang, George Nittus back in 2012 was racing a genuine XY Falcon GT HO. Some of these cars are worth a mint in a museum without the racing decals and upgrades.

I think it was 2019 the touring car masters teamed up with the New Zealand equivalent of the same category and done a race together, something like 40 cars ranging from 60’s-80’s muscle cars. There was a black mustang shooting nice large flames and it even managed to hit 305kph down conrod straight, thats faster than the supercars.
Also fun fact i seen the other day but steve johnson in that yellow/green mustang had a lap fast enough that he would’ve qualified for the 1000 race up until 2016 I believe if the car had been eligible

Look for one featuring Ian "Pete" Geoghegan, Allan Moffatt, Norman Beechey, a cheeky Morris Cooper S (Foley or Manton) and Jim MacKeown in his Lotus Cortina. Many other tracks were used in various States that are non operational now mostly due to suburbia expanding.
For the tin tops there were categories called Series Production (basically showroom), Improved Production (limited modifications) and the wild Sports Sedans where basically anything goes and we see cars like an Alfa with a large Chev v8. Peter Brock's first Austin A30 with the 179CI Holden donc fell into the latter class. We saw many great vehicles that could not qualify for the Bathurst race race in these categories.
