They should have done this video, let people comment, and then say, "HA! they're BOTH custom shop. Only one is Murphy aged". They sounded so the same. Even Joe Bonamassa agrees how good the current Historics are even though he buys a burst at what almost seems to be a monthly occurrence..
That was an awesome sequence at the end--whoever stitched the clips together did it flawlessly. Kudos. And I couldn't tell a difference in the sound between the vintage and the reproduction.
At first I thought the 2019 had a creamier tone, then I noticed in your opening riffs you had the 58 on the bridge position pickup and the 2019 on the middle position. In the closing riffs you had them both on the same pickup and I couldn't hear a difference. So, if you're a collector, get the 58. If you're a player, get the 2019.
Got to take care of, and play an original 58 GT back in the early 70’s as a roadie and loved that guitar. 45 years later I bought a 2007 59 RI and got to say Gibson my hats off too your craftsmanship 🎶😎
OMG Marty, please do a video of a '59 vs. a '19 R9, let people comment on the oh so different sound, but then do another video where you show that it was the SAME guitar, except someone relic'd it between video takes. Or even simpler, switch the Audio, haha. Everyone will love the '59 when they're really hearing the R9.
Nicely played Marty 👌🏻 I still remember meeting you many moons back in Capo Beach/Beach Road...looks like all’s well for you, cheers 🍻 to the success 🤙🏻
These series are great comparisons and kudos to Gibson Custom. But I sure wish a Gibson USA standard would compare as well since back in the 50s there was no Custom Shop. Or do they?
New sub here; such a cool channel Marty, nice work all around. Also, THANK you, thank YOU, THANK YOU...for introducing me (us) to “Songbirds”. I have lived NE of Atlanta for 25 years and had no idea this museum even existed. You best believe that I’ll be visiting David and his team (at Songbirds Museum) VERY soon...and frequently too. Thanks again and rock on!🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
I like the 2019, to my ears it sounds sweeter. I own a 1994 goldtop classic, after all these years it's still my favorite guitar, 60s slim neck a joy to play.
@@adamsrober The pickup selector switch is in the same position when he plays the outro and he's picking at the same location. The '58 sounds like the pickups are lower output.
It's all in your head. If you don't look at the label switching on the outro, you wouldn't even notice a difference. I once thought I heard a difference between a FAV setting on a pedal (Iridium) and the current setting, except they were the same settings. And Marty's 'magical' reference to the '58 is also in his head. My '73 custom sounds and feels 'magical' to me cuz it's older than me, but in the end it's one of so many. Does sound great though.
@@52factorial I wasn't even looking at the guitars. I actually had to go back and see which was which. But I could still hear the sound difference, and it's probably a really small difference, but after years of playing guitar, you tend to pick up the little things in sound
Either are really great guitars man. I think unless you’re a curator or collector buying for an investment, I say pick the one you’ll actually play the most and enjoy making music on! ✌🏻🙂🎼
2:20 It might just be the lighting or the camera angle but it almost looks like the stop bar on the reissue is in the wrong place ... the alignment looks off.
@@52factorial precisely- I've played quite a few Bursts, 335s and Goldtops, and one thing is for sure...every single guitar I've played with real PAFs in it sounded different from the next one (with some obvious commonalities) some of them weren't all that great and others had that "thing" we all hear about. That being Gibson did a damn fine job in 2019 on make the right changes (luxe caps, proper pots and switchcraft jacks and switches) The new ones are pretty close, and if the difference is 200k between then new and old... I think we all can get the tone we want at the price that we can work with.
The 2019 does sound better and should since tech has come along a long way from 1958. The difference is gonna be the fit and feel. Years of playing has gotta made the guitar, especially that neck, a really nice broken in feel.
Marty... which one really motivates you to play. I also think these are low volume low gain demos. If you open them up there will definitely be a difference. Also, when these things are recorded like this it really doesn’t do the ‘58 justice. In the room there would be a large difference. “The Magic” referred to
Hey Marty, I have the exact 2019 CS Goldtop with dark back, absolutely fantastic, more a ‘58 Goldtop feeling. What gear are you using in this video? Or do yoy guys know that?
With that opening jam, the custom shop was using both pickups while the vintage was in the bridge position. The outtro jam were both in bridge, and they sounded nearly identical to my destroyed-by-Badmotorfinger-ears. Smooth jams, tho!
I think both are awesome but in my opinion if you get the chance to get a reasonable price on a 58 les Paul u take it cuz that chance doesn’t come often. You’ll be able to get a 2019 custom shop forever
hard to tell as both sound good is but problem is most videos on youtube recorded with audio interface .even cheap guitar sound good with audio interface .i think peoppe should do rewievs with direct from the amp
I love the true twangy-ness and brightness of that 58. You can't mimic 60 years of playing and sitting. The wood is going to continue to dry out and lighten. You CANNOT replicate it. So go with your heart. But there is only 1 true goldtop.
If you have played a PRS you would know what a quality sound, and feel is like compared to Gibson, but for investment only an original 59 will make you money, but a PRS will make you sound and look good.
I have an INSANELY radical idea. Why not just make EVERY year of equal quality? Every company does it and I get it but I just wish that companies would say "If such and such year is our landmark then that will always be the bare minimum we shoot for".
It's a redundant question. If you can afford the 58,you'd probably already have the reissue. Nobody is going to empty their bank account for a vintage guitar, but they will for a reissue. If you're in the market to buy the vintage LP, it's spare cash. The reissue, you saved for.
On the first comparison you had the Custom Shop in the middle position and the real 58 in the treble position. ( my mistake....that was the intro not a comparison)
There was no shot heard around the world because origonally nobody really liked the les paul with humbuckers and its funny that intially everyone thought pafs were very muddy sounding and the guitar was a flop but as music changed and rock get heavier severL years later in the mid 60s and people discovered that a les paul with humbuckers would drive the amp harder then the patent sticker pickups that were in current 335s and and the sg at the time. So the shot heard around the world was delayed by a few years.
On the intro comparison, the 2019 is on the middle position, while the 58 is on the bridge!
good catch!
Saw that right away myself - probably forgot or didn't check for some reason..
True! Why would he do that if he wanted an honest comparison?
I love how people are talking about how they sound, to me they both sounded like they played through my Samsung phone.😁🎸
😂
I'd say both have their good advantages that make them unique, but I'd always want the classic dirty and rock sound of the 58
They should have done this video, let people comment, and then say, "HA! they're BOTH custom shop. Only one is Murphy aged". They sounded so the same. Even Joe Bonamassa agrees how good the current Historics are even though he buys a burst at what almost seems to be a monthly occurrence..
i have a '58 custom shop VOS (LEFTY),Its a fabulous guitar, those big fat necks are without doubt the best IMO,they are so comfortable.
The 2019 sounds a bit smoother to me but I love that slight grittiness from the 58
chad church I had the same thought. 😎👍
Same
In the beginning the 2019 is in the middle position and when he plays the 58 he is in the bridge so of course it’s gonna sound brighter
That was an awesome sequence at the end--whoever stitched the clips together did it flawlessly. Kudos. And I couldn't tell a difference in the sound between the vintage and the reproduction.
I can’t act like the 19 isn’t overall better with the clarity, but the fuzz of the 58 is so unique and funky sounding you can’t not love it.
The 2019 one sounds better to me!!
At first I thought the 2019 had a creamier tone, then I noticed in your opening riffs you had the 58 on the bridge position pickup and the 2019 on the middle position. Well, the '58 costs 300k
Gold Tops are my favorite type of Les Paul
What a dream to be able to play something so historic
fair to say that Gibson have nailed the sound with that one.
I picked up a Les Paul Standard 50s, heritage cherry sunburst. The gold top is amazing. I’d prefer the 2019 over the 1958.
The '58 has a bit more top-end, but the 2019 sounds really smooth.
They both sound amazing. The 58 though..... there is magic happening with that thing.
Got to take care of, and play an original 58 GT back in the early 70’s as a roadie and loved that guitar. 45 years later I bought a 2007 59 RI and got to say Gibson my hats off too your craftsmanship 🎶😎

Personally, I'd go with the 2019 Custom as far as playability goes, I like the neck profile better.
Am I mad to say that even though the '19 Les Paul sounds a bit more pronounced and balanced, the child in me wants that '58 every single time.
If I went in that museum I would never leave. That place is awesome. Thanks Marty!
Marty is a guitar beast
I love the Les Paul and the history of the guitar and person
Nicely played Marty 👌🏻 I still remember meeting you many moons back in Capo Beach/Beach Road...looks like all’s well for you, cheers 🍻 to the success 🤙🏻
To me the 2019 sounded more punchy, but the 58 had a really open sound that I dug
This time I prefer the vintage one. It sounds smoother, with really mellow mids.
These series are great comparisons and kudos to Gibson Custom. But I sure wish a Gibson USA standard would compare as well since back in the 50s there was no Custom Shop. Or do they?

I just love these Guitar Episodes Marty! Very enjoyable to watch and hear you play, go Marty and Gibson go!
I'd definitely go the Junior...
Both sound great to me and my headphones. Great job Marty.
The '58 has a more open voice. More clarity. Sounds much better than the 2019.
2019 has a deeper more pronounced sound
He’s playing the 58 on the bridge and the 2019 in the middle position...

Soon as you said something magical about the 58 ,the question becomes moot.🎶🎸🎶
Great video . What style of music would you guys say the opening peice is , I love it ?
Dont hear a better or worse, just a difference. Both are great. Whatever your ear prefers.
My Tokai Les Paul Custom, does the job tbh and is better than the expensive Gibson I sold, plus, if I drop it, it doesn't cost thousands.
Thank you for the Les Paul vs. 2019 Gibson Custom Shop guitar comparison
Thanks guys love the video~! Older newer player here, thx!
Its obviously hard to tell for me witch one sounded better, however Mr Marty seemed happier playing on that piece of history.
Either are really great guitars man. I think unless you’re a curator or collector buying for an investment, I say pick the one you’ll actually play the most and enjoy making music on! ✌🏻🙂🎼
Nice I really enjoyed that jazzy song
Such a more brighter sound on the 1958 les Paul
Nice review!! Not so big different to my cheap earphones. I think that custom shop is an amazing condition.
The 2019 sounds just a bit colder but great guitar non the less.
I hope the Custom Shop can grow into that great tone the ‘58 has. It’s good in its own right, but the vintage really kicks @$$.
I would personally go with the '58.
What a cool job that would be to go find sick unique guitars lol 🤘🏻
I recommend visiting Songbirds Guitar Museum. The best guitar museum in the country.
Shouldn't the toggle switch be in the same position if you're going to do a comparison?
As always Marty, very cool !! Thank you for inspiration!!
2:20 It might just be the lighting or the camera angle but it almost looks like the stop bar on the reissue is in the wrong place ... the alignment looks off.
I've owned many Gibson Custom Shop guitars but I have to say the 2019 56 Les Paul is awesome
Your playing is money in this vid Marty!
Do a lesson on “bad penny” by Rory Gallagher please I’ve been trying learn it for a while thanks
Rory Gallagher was awesome!
Also just goes to show the Gibson Custom shop is really putting out some great les Paul’s
The 2019!
Cool! Funcky Marthy presented it well..I take the gold top, bäääm👍
The 58 pickups sound a bit hotter. Put a boost on the 2019, it not magic.
Funny, someone else said the 58 has lower output. People just hearing what they're seeing. Ooooh, a '58. Must be magic.

Sick, but just look at that other guy just tappin’ along
Isn’t the ‘58 made with high density old growth wood? And the new one not?
The 58 settled that 🤘
Love both but I’d just instinctively would go the “58” if it was all complete original
Oh Marty that 58 baby!
What happened to Saturday's live stream with "2-smooth"? Really wanted to take a second look at those jazz cords.
Both guitars sound great, also a lesson on how to play Renegade by Styx would be appreciated👍
Both sound good but that 58 is amazing

All my guitar settings were "dimed", medium volume on the Todd Sharp amp.
Marty Music thanks for the great video. Which one motivated you most to play?
Marty my friend you should teach groovy grubworm please and thank you

I'd buy a collings and put gibson pickups in it if you want it to sound like a gibson.

Deffinetly the 58 it has a more crisp sound in my opinion
I like both sounds but I prefer 2019 one because its 100 times cheaper then 58 😅
The guitar lover in me wants that 1958 so badly. Who doesn't love a vintage Les Paul? But the 2019 actually sounds a hair better to me.
hard to tell as both sound good is but problem is most videos on youtube recorded with audio interface .even cheap guitar sound good with audio interface .i think peoppe should do rewievs with direct from the amp
Please do a tutorial on your song Making Something From Nothing!!
58. Has a deeper tone to it and more treble in my opinion

very authentic

I enjoy the 58
58 of course no doubt
Judging frome the licks at the end, when they were both on the bridge, the 58 was the best, custom was good but..... didn't sound as good as the PAF's
