Well, blame the fact that Diaclone came back, and now Convoy can't be used anymore. But to be honest, Convoy is easily translated into Prime in Hasbro's circles, so it's less for trademark reasons and more on this age-old practice ever since Cybertron of all times (2004). Curious on how they're bringing in Big Convoy for a new toy, Masterpiece or otherwise. Maybe name him by his substitute in Western markets, Ultra Mammoth, and treat both as the same character? And about the name of his Big Cannon, how will they change it?
Lio convoy has been called Leo Prime in japan since his -prime- arm micron toy came out. They didn't change Big Convoys' nor Fire Convoys' names when he got reiussed in encore for whatever reason. As most recent as the legends manga his name has been Leo Prime (Dark Amber Leo Prime) Regardless, his localized name should be "Lio Primal" like the leader of the Cybertrons was called in its American television show Beast Wars The 2nd was a sequel to.
Iirc the reason why he was also called Leo prime in Japan is because that was his name in the transformers prime universe and in the Japanese dub they used the English names for all the characters and so they just used the localized name, Leo prime for lio convoy and I think the legends one is supposed to be that same incarnation of lio convoy just a different look hence why his name is also Leo prime
Wasn't the idea that Lio Convoy would adopt the name of Leo Prime whenever he entered a universe that didn't use the name of "Convoy"? I always assumed he just took on the name of the equivalent rank in a specfic universe.
One feature he didn’t mention: those little pieces of mane on the robot mode arms can also flip out and hold the guns that tab onto the sides of the lion head, mimicking a similar feature on the original toy
The thing with the lion face is that there isn't really a problem with the sculpt bar the exposed teeth: that's how a lion looks. If they removed the fangs (I know Hasbro put them for the kids, but it can look rather silly, as this figure shows) and painted the face, the problem would've been solved. An alternative would have been sculpting a snarling face, that way the teeth are showing without looking odd, and the fierce look would've compensated the lack of paint, all while spending the exact same amount of money, but, for some reason, they never do that. In Beast Wars they did it a lot (even Rattrap and Armordillo are snarling), but, even then, they were rather cartoony snarling expressions. I guess they don't do them because it would scare the kids? I really don't know, but I've never seen a Hasbro animal toy baring its teeth properly.
I didn't think there could be a legality to the name "Convoy" vs "Prime;" I thought it was a cultural thing, since our big boss bots were titled "Prime" & in Japan, they were titled "Convoy" until the 2007 film
I believe in Japan they are slowly changing Convoy to Optimus Prime now, but his past versions will still keep the Convoy moniker so Leo Convoy is still accurate. That being said I'll never use the name Scourge, it will always be Black Convoy.
my first interaction of character was in IDW The Ascending and their they called him Convoy I hope we get to see a new Big Convoy figure at some point.
Hopefully Lio Convoy does well so we can get more new figures of Japanese Beast Wars characters like II's Galvatron(hopefully with less GPS). Also, it's pronounced 'Second' not 'Two' in Beast Wars II.
When I bought mine of eBay several years ago, something struck me as odd. The fact that the original Red & Blue one went for $50+, while the Lio Convoy colored one, which remember, was a Target Black Friday exclusive, hovered on or around retail price.
@@lyokomajor I actually remember there being a Legends Class Leo Prime as well that was released as part of the 2006 "Classics" line but it was probably just a refresh from the Cybertron line.
This is one transformer that I will probably just keep in robot form anyway cause he’s just so bad ass and fun. The lion form whether Leo or Lio version is just meh compared to robot form.
The only thing I have an issue with on this guy is he basically requires a parts separater if you don't have nails. & the middle back piece pegs in too tight in beast mode so I'm constantly popping it off when transforming back to bot. Update: I figured him out. Just have to wiggle the rear shell piece until the middle piece loosens and he's easy. The robot chest you can pretty much grab if you angle your fingy correctly.
why's that funny? when i first saw him in stores, i passed on him cause of the price. but then i saw reviews, fell in love with the figure, and couldn't find him anywhere LOL. Luckily he came back in stock and i grabbed him at a cheaper price too.
The face doesn't really bother me that much... except for the eyes which kind of make him look dead. It looks better in robot mode but beast mode it looks wrong. I think the Masterpiece even had a gimmick where you could change the beast eyes as part of the transformation. As for the weird thing with the name... Japan and the U.S. has always had different names for the characters so it really doesn't surprise me that they would Americanize his name. What does actually surprise me is that they just call him Optimus Primal. I know it's an entirely different character but that didn't stop Hasbro from calling Ginrai Powermaster Optimus Prime on the American release of that toy. There are also other instances of Optimus Primal being used that have nothing to do with the Beast Wars character. For starters while they were originally intended to both be Maximal versions of G1 Optimus Prime the gorilla was completely changed into a different character for the cartoon while the Bat version sort of retroactively became an entirely different character who's still associated with the original G1 Optimus. Then there's also Resuce Bots where Dinobot Optimus Prime was called Optimus Primal on some of the toy packaging. So that's just kind of become the go to name for any beast version of Optimus Prime even if it's not intended to be the same character. What's actually confusing is the existence of some comics featuring Beast Wars II and Neo characters in America that still use their Japanese names. Especially the fact that both Apache and B'Boom exist in those comics despite both of them looking exactly the same and clearly just being a regional variant of the same character. The constant bouncing back and forth between Japanese and American names just made for a very confusing read. I actually prefer just calling him Optimus Primal because I've grown assumed to the idea that any character who looks like Optimus have that name and beast mode variants always be called Primal. The only reason I would ever address him as Leo Prime is just to differentiate him from the other Optimus Primals. I can't imagine that characters in universe would ever refer to him as BWII Optimus Primal so Leo Prime makes a bit more sense as a nick name to separate him out from the rest of the Optimus Prime look a likes on the Convoy Council, or as I like to call them the Council of Primus. All that said, Lio Convoy isn't the worst Japanese name for a Transformer. Better than Big Convoy, that doesn't even sound like a name it just sounds like an over generalized description of his size. I hope they continue the trend of bringing up Japanese exclusive characters and give him a better name. Again I just see him as another Optimus Primal but I've also taken to the name Neo Prime repurposing the name of the series he came from mostly because I can't think of a better name for him and he's never had any sort of American counterpart before.
con·voy - a group of ships or vehicles traveling together, typically accompanied by armed troops, warships, or other vehicles for protection. An animal should never have been a Convoy.
It fixed a few of Lioconvoy's flaws, like how the kibble handles the shoulders, but there's still enough of the aesthetics I don't care for that I don't think I want this version either.
And I thought they avoided the word "Convoy" so that us dumb English-speakers wouldn't be confused.
Me too
I know this is a year old now but did anyone point TJ toward any pictures of barbery lions?
Face is spot on for them

Someone has already customized this toy into Nina Tucker.

A commander class Big Convoy would be awesome! Im surprised we haven’t gotten him by a 3rd party company by now
That red part of the knee joints can click back more in robot mode to give him a more normal stance. It took me awhile to figure that out with mine.
TJ, your mane is far more impressive. Lio Convoy would be jealous.
"I'll let you fill in the blank-literally"

Well one of the leaks of year 3 of Legacy says that we might get a Tasmanian Kid
I own beast wars 2 Galvatron and has normal gold plastic. No swirls! Just normally molded gold.
Ha, the shout-out to the Cybertron redeco Leo Prime. I always wanted that one as a kid but couldn't get it. Eventually got it way, way later.

The face on beast mode is meh but the robot mode looks solid!
I thought the weapons storage on the back was for his prime jets like he had in the anime
I find myself wondering where my original Lio Convoy is now.
By all rights he should be called Leo Primal, to keep Beast Era consistency with da monke.
Does the original actually have gps? Mine seems ok but I haven’t transformed it in a couple years.
It doesn’t mention it on the tfwiki, and I can’t find any cases of it happening.
The Galvatron from that series did
I think Hasbro calls him Leo Prime because they want his name to be recognizable to kids and also because, THIS, IS, MURICA
it also sounds better 😎
The lion head looks fine I just don’t like the fangs hanging out. Also the ears are unpainted
His ears were yellow in the show in beast mode.
I cut the fangs on mine and the lion head looks a lot better.
