I was on the Excel, Jan 1965 to Dec 1967. 2 Westpac deployments, Market Time ops. Made RM3 while aboard. In the 1966 yard period at Fellows & Stewart in LBEACH, they installed the radar transmitter room around the mast on the O1 level, and later, I believe in Guam. the windows on the bridge. Jon K. Thanks for the video.
I was on the Leader next to ya all in 67. In westpac, excel had a sonarman, Joe Slack, who I was in A and C school with. When he got medevacked in Nam, I was TAD to your boat to find an air craft that went down. Think I found it, and was transferred back to my boat the next morning.
This is the original superstructure, as built. I was on the USS Impervious (scurvy Pervy) MSO 449, 10 OCT 70 until March 73 at the beginning of Operation Endsweep. I went to the starship Enterprise. After the rebuild at Dillingham, Honolulu harbor, it had a different appearance. That bouncing out of the water, oh brother, what memories!. I was the signalman on it.
my brother was on the Excel. he inherited the 'doesn't get seasick" gene . he said he was on bridge during this event. I would have been just heaving too. I'm such a chucker, the sharks be well fed .
Oh, the memories...half the crew waiting for lunch, while the other half is parting company with breakfast. Supply ship just cruising along, while the Sweep recreates the opening scenes from "Victory At Sea". Served on the Dash, MSO 428 & Adroit, MSO 509.
Was serving last westpac in 1969 steaming to Guam in a typhoon on midwatch we were hit by rogue wave took out sonar lost all power that was a hell time. The thing I'll remember most about that was Big Mike R. Yelling hang on Fish
in 1981 i was stationed on the uss dominant mso 431 for 8 month on deck division at Perth Amboy new jersey, then got orders for my A school in great lakes ill where i made 3rd class.
We took green water all the way up to the pilothouse one night off Hatteras. broke cable reels off the superstructure & the lockers in the forward compartment broke loose. Water & gear adrift sloshing all over the deck. All the sailors impervious to sea sickness, were moaning in their racks that night. Only people not sick were two of the Chiefs. Captain was puking in a bucket attached to the compass binnacle on the bridge. (MSO-474 1969-1971) Makes me want to sell Buicks. Buuiiicckk! LOL
Oh, I remember our minesweeper making sloshy sounds. The sea is rough in this video, You can't take waves like you see in the footage without making sloshy sounds.
