Salied on MSO-508, ACME, consort with MSO-466, PRIME, MSO-467, REAPER, and MSO-468, LUCID, for WESPAC on 1 April 1968 under our our own steam and returned to Long Beach, CA in November. Again under our own steam. I'm 80 and would I do it again? You betcha!
I sailed on the MSO-439, USS Excel, in company with the Enhance MSO-437, from Long Beach to the western Pacific, during the Vietnam era. Sorry to see them all (save one, the MSO-458, USS Lucid) sent to the scrap yards. Glad to see this video. Thanks, Jon
my brother was on the USS Excel. I was a navy wife in NAWFUCK my X wife was on the LY Spear. Norfolk was a year and half of total hell, dad warned me!!!!
There's my old boat. USS Esteem MSO-438 I took that boat into the Gulf (with Battle flag flying) as the sea and anchor helmsman (sk3 Fowler) with IC2 Wilson next to me on the Lee Helm. It took us three months to get there. WTF? couldn't they have done the same thing to get us there? Oh well i flew home (many stops along the way) heading west to Seattle where we started our voyage of course heading west. So i can honestly say i left home headed west and came home headed west! that is around the world folks, I saw many things/people/countries at the ripe old age of 23.
Uss Conquest how did that along side refueling work out for ya with that LST between Hawaii and Philippines? LOL thanks for the big layover for us (USS Esteem mso-438) in the Philippines! much appreciated!😁
My old man was the captain of Conquest when that happened - I remember hearing that sea story a few times growing up. If I remember correctly he said that he and the other officers were against refueling alongside because that’s not how it was normally done? but were made to do it anyway. Apparently he had a reputation for running into shit though 😂
My husband was stationed on the USS Excel MSO 439
From 1994-1967
He was the MESS Specialist
Stationed San francosco

USS Pledge (MSO 492) was sold to the Formosa Navy.
