Love the Bassday Sugarpens but the hooks on them do look like they were made for more heavy/stronger fighting fish species in Japan. I put small assist hooks on mine, I find that helps a lot with hook ups with Aussie species. Great content as usual Shroom!
Thanks Hai! Yes those hooks are a bit bigger and thicker. They last long and give you a decent chance of some bigger bycatch like salmon and kings but when the bream are finicky, that's when it's a downside. I was half hoping for a bycatch given that I was in the Hacking so I held off till late

Good video mate. Lots of good fishing in Port Hacking. The sugapens out of the box have #5 trebles i think. They can work well if you downsize to #8 or #10 Atomic assist hooks on the rear and #8 or #10 treble in the middle. But up to the individual i suppose. Least your getting a few 🐟 Cheers 👍
Thanks Trevor. I was resistant to changing because there was always that chance kings would show up but downsizing is the perfect solution for bream. I'll have to try some surface lures with some assists.

Absolutely beautiful area to fish. The sandy bottom should have produced heaps you would think. The bream was a tough customer. lol. I really do like your casting ability, lovely action. Donut session thumbs up
I'd have to agree Hilton, Port Hacking is truly a marvel. I was expecting a field day on the whiting, not a single one haha. That was tough fight on either side of that rock, it didn't want to leave! Very stoked with a such a big fish in shallow water that far into the day. Thanks a lot, that means a lot haha, I never get to watch my own casts!
Another nice video Shroom & fly fishing , i like assist hooks short in the middle & normal at the back on top water you wont miss any fish & snag free to a extant, nice to see the frigates back i miss them tuna on little river to sea metal lures on 6lb the runs they do is insane on moderate drag or less gets the heart rate going perfect lol....👌
Thanks George! I'll have to give that a go at some stage. I'm gonna give a small metal a go the next time I see this happen. Maybe I may just tick off frigate or bonito this year!
Shroomy, I've just got back from Manning Point and smashed it. But.... I need you to go to Harrington and fish the lagoon from the breakwater. There's multiple metre plus flathead, 40+cm bream and all sorts of massive species just cruising around, wouldn't take any lure, bait, jig, anything, It looks like an aquarium. I managed a 36cm flattie and that was the only thing landed all morning. The greatest tease on the coast. If you can get anything decent out of that lagoon you will attain legendary status and instantly become RUclips's No 1 fishing expert in the Universe. Yes, this is a challenge.
Thanks a lot gamingmanic42! Will do, always something new and interesting every week and yes that bream was a whopper! Takes a lot to tempt a big bream in broad daylight and on top too! 😁🙏
Hi Shroom nice vlog great to see variety in the lures and techniques loved the fly attempt, have you done a fresh water trout vlog? Keep the great work going mate
Thanks a lot John! I haven't filmed a single one but I have done a bit of trout fishing. That might be a good idea this year to make a trout video and possibly a fly fishing one for trout too
Thanks Shroom, you've made me feel like a real dud...........I used this same lure yesterday surface fishing for whiting and didnt get a strike! As soon as I changed over to a different lure I caught a couple - go figure!! 🤔 Another terrific video and session Shroom. I'd love to see you catch fish on a lure you design and make yourself using unconventional materials......potential for a future video?? Keep them coming please!
Thanks Archie. Funny how surface fishing works some times but I'm glad you made the right change and got a bag of fish! That might be an idea for a future video, I'll write that down 👍

Great video on a tough day, nice to get out on a boat i bet, I have assist hooks on all my sugapen's, they have improved my hook ups heaps, great video Pete,
Thanks Anthony, I probably made it a lot more difficult sticking with the heavier trebles but there's no telling if bigger fish come by so I stuck by it. Those assists would have helped a lot at the cost of less surface explosions
Try swapping the trebels for small circle hooks less snags and dropped fish I've had a better hook up rate since, they seem to come back after a missed strike aswell
wow! very nice session, I'm looking into getting a surface lure for whiting and bream and I am thinking about the daiwa slippery dog, which size would be better 65mm or 80mm?
Lucas, if you're fishing closed waters with less ripple, the smaller one otherwise the bigger one is more stable and easier to work with a bit of chop and current
Thanks Pat and yes I use a bit of mono backing (around the same breaking strain as the braid. For shallow spools, not much maybe a turn or two of mono. It helps spool up the deeper spools so I use more in that case
Hey shroom great vid and love your content! I was wondering if you would be able to recommend me a good place to catch kingies? I’ve been looking for ages with my grandpa for a good spot but can’t seem too find one!
I can definitely see you buy another medium-fast action rod after pulling so many hooks on the trebles, Shroom. Maybe a top-of-the-range Daiwa Infeet? Hahaha...
Uncommonly, I do use mono but often time's I'm using fluoro out of laziness. I make sure the head of the lure isn't completely submerged so then it will still have a good action. Any spool of mono line is fine so long as it's not old or been exposed to too much sunlight. I've even used cheap ones like Jarvis Walker and they've been fine.
I always tell my customers that clear water can be a curse, they see you coming. When the ferries and trawlers used to churn up the Parra, the fishing, particularly for bream, was insane compared to how it is now. Those fish busting up that ignored you were almost certainly frigates, there's a shedload of them around at the moment. Freaky seeing tuna working in that sort of water but that's what they do.
Totally agree Mark, and they seem to all get the idea they are getting preyed on if you drop a fish or spook a few in the general area. Good call Mark, I didn't know what they were but they certainly didn't seem tailor-like in size of smash or style. I still need to tick off frigate, bonnies and mahi (when offshore). My fly fishing technique is pretty rusty, I could see a tailing loop haha

how cool is the orange line and slippery dog!
A separate question. Can we reuse the soft plastics? Do we leave the jighead in the lure or remove it ? How many times can we reuse the soft plastic?
Yes, most plastics are reusable except for those that need juice to remain supple (Gulp, Ecogear etc). You can reuse them until they get too damaged

wow! very nice session,
I'm looking into getting a surface lure for whiting and bream and I am thinking about the daiwa slippery dog, which size would be better 65mm or 80mm?
From my experience either size will work on the whiting and bream if they're actively feeding and like the presentation.
Ok Thanks for the tip, I'll probably get the 80mm for the further casting
Lucas, if you're fishing closed waters with less ripple, the smaller one otherwise the bigger one is more stable and easier to work with a bit of chop and current
Thanks for the tip, I'll probably get the big one then because there is some current in places where I fish.

I can definitely see you buy another medium-fast action rod after pulling so many hooks on the trebles, Shroom. Maybe a top-of-the-range Daiwa Infeet? Hahaha...
Haha James, it was a conscious decision to stick to the lure as it was still producing the hits and in case bigger fish turned up.
