Wow!! These updates are incredible, Larry ! I'm definitely making a donation on your website (although, to be honest, I was planning to do that just for your baked beans video alone). Well done, sir!
I loved your original sheet. Worked great after I dialed it in. Very handy and simple to use and adjust as needed...No need for software offered by some other guys...
Thanks Larry, Metric conversions are fantastic. Have plugged some of my brewed recipes in and already diagnosed some potential mistakes affecting my efficiency. Will definitely be sending you some cash for your efforts. I have started brewing with Red X grain which isn't in your list. Adding it your next version would be great. Thanks again
No issues with the metric conversions that I could see, I do recommend people watch your whole video tutorial before trying to use it, I buggered it up the first time. Total water calculations came out exactly the same as mine for my set up to achieve the same wort volume into the fermenter. As for Red X, I believe its a German malt from BEST Malz. I am not sure about potential, it can be used to make up 100% of the grain bill for beers with a strong red colour. nationalhomebrew.com.au say 1.050 but not sure at what efficiency? I'm still pretty new to all grain. Here are links to their specs: www.bestmalz.de/en/malts/best-red-x/ www.nationalhomebrew.com.au/beergrains-and-maltsbest-malz-red-x-malt Hope this helps.
Larry, thanks for taking the time to build this and share. You've brought together two things I really love: home brewing and spreadsheets. (Not kidding) I've worked on and off on development of one of my own for personal use and can attest it's a lot of work. Cheers to you!
Great videos Larry!! Just finding your videos and website. I am looking forward to checking out some of the food recipes as well as the beer. I downloaded your excel template and wow is it awesome, lots of work put into this. I did find that I had to take it out of protected view in order to use the drop-down menus, not sure if anyone else has had the same problem but easy enough to fix. It's going to be a while before I can make some beer because I have very little money but really looking forward to it.
A lot of work...well done! Great to see metric units - the USA may eventually join the rest of the world on this one. BTW, water would boil at around 100C (and freeze at 0C)...so 150C would be interesting!
Great Job Larry.!!! I’m upgrading to single 20 gal high gravity (8-10% ABV) batch and struggle with mash guidelines. Have 2 10 gal mash tuns and add water to grains( not good). Little help ??
Great job Larry. I had implemented similar drop downs on my copy of your previous spreadsheet. Yours is of course much better organized. What about correction for the refractometer? If you measure using a refractomer once alcohol is present you will need to correct for that. There's a great add to the sheet! Thanks!!
I don't know if there's a way to do this on Excel, but if you had a button to clear all the selections at once on the stuff you fill in to start over would be a nice feature. For example when you are going through all the cell at roughly 29:40 in the video, something like that would be nice, BUT it could also be dangerous. Then again, thats probably why they made a "back" button in Excel
Do you mean while you're screwing around or when you finishing brewing something and want to start the new one? I would figure when you finish a batch you would use "save as" to make a copy named after your batch and open the original file again.
Great video Larry! Love the spreadsheet.(yes i donated:)) On the hop calculations, you have pellets, leaf and plug. What is a plug? Kinda new to this, still working on doing my first brew.
I use the robobrew which is similar to your grainfather you sometimes use. How do you calculate your deadspace for you lauter tun, boil kettle etc. Also how do you calculate evaporation rate in a percentage. I havent been able to properly find an equation that makes sense.
@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY so then to get the percentage I was divide what I put in to what I have left then times it by 100% to get the percentage? Or am I off on that part?
Great video Larry and well done on the new recipe builder. I'm preparing to brew my first batch and your sheet will hopefully guide my through the process. 2 questions - After entering my recipe I don't see any ABV values. My second point is the mashing which I find unclear. How long should the strike water mash and what temperature should my sparge water be? I'm confused. Also can you recommend a hoppy Pale Ale recipe for a first time brewer (all grain/cooler method)
I plugged in a recipe with a target gravity og 1.053 and when I plug it into the template i get 3.2%. All the grains look correct. Any Idea why the ABV is so low?
BEER-N-BBQ by Larry I believe I may have the wrong water levels and the new template appears to be a big upgrade. Ill play with it again and try to get the right calcs. Thank you Larry this looks awesome!
Thanks for the new spreadhseet! I've been using you old one for the past few brews, and it has really simplified things for me. Looking forward to trying out this new one on a new brew! I was trying to input a recent recipe, and encountered a problem. When I select "Acidulated (Sauer) Malt" in the Grain & Sugar calcs, the VLOOKUP seems to fail and returns a bunch of "N/A". All other grains I trid worked fine, so I wonder if it is because it is the first one on the list. I tried changing it to just "Acid Malt" in both sheets, but still had the problem. Any idea what's going wrong?
Hi Larry, love the spreadsheet, heaps of detail there! Is there an, easy way that I could apply the spreadsheet to an extract brew with say 10L boil, rather than all grain? Thanks, Angus.
Thanks Larry, I am doing 23L batches, but only a partial boil of around 10-12L, then topping up with cold water in the fermenter. Is there any way I can work this into the calculation, because currently the spreadsheet is adding up all the losses and telling me I can't fit it all in my kettle (which is only 20L). I'm generally adding about half of my extract at the beginning of the boil, with the rest at the end so my hop utilisation isn't too far out. Thanks.
Hi Larry, you are right, I've decided that I need to move to all grain, first brew is next weekend! I'm using your Bell's 2 Hearted Pale Ale clone recipe. One question I had; where is hop utilisation factored into the IBU calcs? I can't see this factor anywhere on the spreadsheet, or do you assume a typical value that isn't user adjustable? Using your spreadsheet the IBUs come in quite high (about 76) and OG is 1.064; is that correct? Thanks, Angus.
Brilliant thanks for your quick responses. I note there isn't a factor in there for the mash tun specific heat, so do you assume that the mash tun is pre-heated? Cheers.
Great, I wasn't sure. I've used Beersmith, and they have a user adjustable percentage for utilisation, which I thought was odd - how would I know what my hop utilisation will be? Cheers.
BEER-N-BBQ by Larry Hi Larry, I've made a couple of changes to your spreadsheet which I thought I'd tell you about. I added in a correction for the specific heat of dry grain, which improves the accuracy of the strike water temp calculation. I also found a formula for calculating the FG from the Brix reading (I don't thiink the calc was correct originally). Happy to send your the details if you like. Cheers, Angus.
Hey Larry, I'm one of your fans from over the pond! Just looking to put together my own setup for brewing, and having an issue with getting a decent burner. I'm working on a budget and wondered if a BBQ grill would work as my main source of heat? Sorry it's a trivial question but wanted to ask if you saw any obvious flaws with it? Cheers!
Hey thanks for the response! Yes it's a gas BBQ, I've only got an AGA cooker inside, which I think is like 3000-4000 BTU so would really struggle on that! Okay cool i'll look into the turkey fryer or maybe moving my bbq to a wind sheltered area and trying with that! Love your videos man and I'm going to try and make the Zombie Dust as my first brew. I appreciate the help!
The sheet is really cool. As are your videos in general (new subscriber here). However, I'm making this comment on 4/28/2017, and the sheet I just downloaded says you made version 2.0.4 on 4/29/2017. So I guess I'm wondering when you're going to do your time-machine video.
So no flux capacitor? Oh well. I'm going to make your DIY recirculation chiller this weekend. I did a calculation of how much water I'm wasting and it caused an existential crisis.
