I've tried them all, and for years I used Beersmith. I know Brad Smith added a load of features to Beersmith 3 including water chemistry additions, but Brewfather has absolutely everything you need including a very easy water chemistry tool, and it works so smoothly and easily. Brewfather is hands down the best out there right now.
I've used Brewfather for every single batch I've brewed since I started (about 18 months ago). I think most people use Beersmith simply becasue it's what they've used for a while, it looks like it's good and has most of what you need covered so it's a good choice. I, however, think that brewfather is probably better option for new brewers as it seem more intutive and looks more "modern". Not having used the Beersmith app I can't speak to how good or bad it is but I really like the Brewfather app, it has all the timings and timers you need for everything so it's a great way to have a ready digital check list as soon as you've made your recipe. As for the printed out recipe sheets I can agree that Beersmith seems better organized for brewing the actual beer but as someone that hasn't used a brewing sheet for a beer, basically ever, this doesn't affect me.
That’s what I rock as well - $20 a year is well worth it for Brewfather premium. Not to mention the brewing Godfather braj David Heath uses it. The free version is great as well.

Started with Beersmith which I liked, but when the license renew time came around I decided to see if that was still a good choice, I trialled Brewfather and liked what I saw. A really clean intuitive interface. So I have swapped, I've now used Brewfather for about a year and will stick with it. The main reason is not having to spend extra money on the mobile app. One license gets you access to the desktop and mobile browser app. No need to print out paper, the phone app has the information you need for the stage of the brew you are at, and will run notification timers.

I've used BeerSmith for about 10 years. I'm comfortable with it, and it works for me. All my recipes are in there, so I probably won't switch now. I also use BeerSmith 2 that I bought originally and haven't switched to the subscription-based BeerSmith 3. That said, once I upgrade my MAC OS to Big Sur I will lose support for BeerSmith 2, so I may be forced to switch to a subscription service. I better have a beer or three and think about it.

Lots of options, but I'm another user Brewfather user converted from Beersmith. The true cloud integration, not just some recipe storage and seeing the same interface on multiple devices too did it. I buy ingredients in bulk so I really need to use the inventory features, and being able to see my current inventory on my phone or pc is the killer feature. But some folks swear by the grainfather app too - even if they don't have a grainfather. I have a grainfather and never bother with their app integration or recipe builder any longer.
I was a long time BeerSmith user but I went 100% over to Brewfather. The app is exactly the same as the web interface and is all seamless going between the two. Batch recipe is nice too when you realize you need to make a recipe adjustment on the fly but you don't necessarily want to permanently change the original recipe. As long as they stay on top of updates it should stay solid moving forward.
I used beersmith for years until I found brewfather. It's a lot slicker and easier to use. Beersmith is comprehensive but I haven't found any less features in Brewfather. Another great thing is integration with other devices like Tilt and Plaato. This gives live graphs during fermentation. I even stream custom data from my kit and see it on the app. Oh, the final thing is that they publish their API which means you can write your own apps to access your recipes and data.

I downloaded Grainfather community, it’s similar to Brewfather, but free. I’ve researched recipes, and created my own. If you get a chance to try it, it’s well worth it.
nice, cheers kevin!
Shit i barely know how to brew . Never mind brewing software. :)
pen & paper will prevail Curt!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE LOL. Actually I am using Beersmith 3 mobile. Quite the cluster. Brewfather seems much more intuitive and polished. In beersmith mobile I have no idea how to add salts in my water. As far as I can tell it doesn't suggest quantities of salts needed.
