My two favourites were Dancing Brave and Mill Reef. Dancing Brave’s stunning finishing speed against an amazing field and Mill Reef in record time adding to The Derby and King George all in that exciting 1971 season!
Totally agree. Danedream's performance in the Arc was never given the credit it should have because all the focus in the UK was on Frankel, who never ran over a mile and a half.
Every race fan has their view of the best Arc winner. My humble choice is 1)Dancing Brave, under an ice cool flawless ride by the fantastic Pat Eddery. 2) Vaguely Noble, perfectly handled by the master horseman, Bill Williamson. 3) The incomparable Sea Bird 11, ridden with supreme confidence by Australian ace, Pat Glennon.
@@StephenSmall-sf5um One of my favourite riders was Olivier Peslier, and when he won the Arc on Peintre Celebre, trained by the indomitable genius Andre Fabre I was thrilled, he was a wonderful horse with brilliant acceleration, no question. But I promise you, no horse came near Sea Bird, he was a freak, a stayer with a turn of foot like a sprinter. Sadly not a huge success at stud.
Some truly great horses in this series Dancing Brave Ribot, Sea bird and Sea the Stars was quite special given the position he was in . Workforce was a very good horse coming back off defeats
I judge the best Arc winner on the horses it beat. Dancing Brave beat the greatest field ever assembled for the Arc and trounced them. Peintre Celebre triple turn of foot was stunning and a superstar. Sea-Bird, maybe the greatest of them all. Mill Reef Alleged Montjeu, all superstars and Enable to win it more than once. But maybe Ribot was the best of them all. My personal fav was and still is Dancing Brave.
The Best Arc De Triomphe winner i seen was 1. Sea The Stars 2 Alleged Not only won it twice making the running from the front on both occasions winning by wide margins .3 Sea Bird and Ribot. The Best Horse to ever run in the arc was Nijinsky 1970 .Should have won and would have won if it kept a straight course in the last 100 yards .Losing 3 Lenths on the run in but was only beating a short head. And Nijinsky Is The Only Colt to win 4. Classics English 2.000 Guineas English Derby 3 Irish Derby 4 English St Ledger .Most classic winning colts today only win 1. or 2 classics at most .
Man please stop about Dancing Brave. Enable was a FAR better looking winner, just as she should have been reeled back in she just f*cked off and left them for dead... Why do people always get stuck in the past? Guys in their mid to late 40's always talking about how their generation (when they were in their early 20's) was the best generation, and none of the horses today would have a chance against them, Its ridiculous. Why would the horses in THAT Arc be the best horses ever, when clearly horses are much faster now as they're trained in better facilities and looked after more economically and they get more attention. I don't mean to be rude but it's not just horses. Cars... apparently as soon as 1999 hit, Nothing else thats ever been invented or made etc is ever gonna be good enough vs everything that was made before that date. Mohammed Ali is a perfect example, people still think he's the best fighter of all time even though he lost a good few fights. Why do people think he's the best fighter ever? Because when they saw him fighting, no one at that time happened to be doing the kinda dancing footwork like him in the ring. Sure he won a bunch of fights and looked cool doing it, But your memories of someones fighting, or your memory of a certain horse winning a race really handily doesn't mean they're the greatest in history, but people swear that anything before 1999 for some reason was the peak of human civilization, and we're now on a downhill trajectory. it's just nonsense. Sea the Stars was a FAR superior horse to Dancing Brave, he won all of Europe's most coveted races INCLUDING The 2000 Guineas over 1 mile, the Derby AND the Arc, but no one gives a F*ck about him, because there's no way he can be better than the mighty Dancing Brave, who won an Arc in a pretty decent manner... Sea the Stars finished in a faster time than Dancing Brave did, even though he looked impressive in winning. But the fact that Sea the Stars won it with horses closer to him probably means that the horses she was facing in general were alot better than the ones dancing brave beat. As if they were really "The best field ever", they would have finished MUCH closer than they did,. and they wouldn't be annihilated for speed like that at the end. I just don't understand why people are SO stuck in the past, and can't accept anything recent as any good compared to the old greats or whatever. Im telling you man Nostalgia is one of the worst human emotions we have, behind jealousy. It's a sneaky emotion that does nothing other than keeping us locked in the past and basically stunting forward movement or growth you know? Any opinions on why we think everything in the past MUST be better than everything recent? Thanks man, and again, I'm not trying to be rude, It's just an observation. Also not to mention how everyone thinks Frankel's win in the 2000 Guineas was the pinacle of horse racing how he finished so far head from leading fro the off. Even though 2 years before that in the same conditions, Sea the Stars won the same race in a time that was 2.3 seconds faster than Frankels...
I love dancing Brave but wtf went wrong in America and that mud in the eye bollocks doesn't cut it with me he had every chance ,never understood that race of his.
I'm not sure we can ever know how good Lammtarra was. Frankie had to beat the living crap out of him to get him to cooperate and it isn't pretty to watch but my g*d, that horse was full of fire.
Nijinsky was the last horse to win the Triple Crown. Even After Been i'll 2 Weeks Before The St Ledger .Plus Is the only Colt to win 4 classics. No other colt has ever done before and won't ever again .Nijinsky Lost The arc at Longchamp Because He Ran Away From the whip lost 3 lanths .Beating a Head .And Lost the champion stakes because it Had a hard season and was past it's best .And Anyone Who knows about racing like i do and with the amount of Experience will tell you what i am saying is correct
Can i ask something? you may find it weird. Why do people always have to Name things? Like we're naming horses ridiculous names that have absolutely ZERO to do with horses? I find it so Strange. Like a horse called "Dome Driver"... and "Rock of Gibralter" or "Enable". Like wtf do ANY of those naes have to do with the horse they name that to? lol Same with things like cars... Mitsubish Lancer? lol, or Ford Escort? so silly! BMW and Mercedes do it correctly of course because they're from germany, naming their cars exactly the way their made up. 325 mean it's a 3 series, and a 2.5 litre engine... What about Jets? "F15 Strike Eagle" sure you MIGHT get away with that as it flies and in some colloquial way kills maybe like an eagle? But then what about F14 Tomcat... Naming after a cat you have sitting in your garden... or Boats.. the USS George Washington ffs anyone else have an opinion on it? I find naming a horse Galileo or Sir Edwin Landseer absolutely Bizarre?
Anthony Quigley believe or not horses names are usually well thought out. Mine was called father brown. His dad was called cawston clown and his mum Irish grace. Clown rhymes with brown and as his mum was Irish there was an irish PI called Father brown. Hence his name. Father Brown. If you didn't have names how would you call things.

I would have Danedream in there. She was rated the same as Enable, broke the track record and beat a tonne of good horses in her day.
Totally agree. Danedream's performance in the Arc was never given the credit it should have because all the focus in the UK was on Frankel, who never ran over a mile and a half.
Totally agree. The most underrated arc winner. For me one of the top 10, easily
Simple reason why enable is there and danedream isn't despite the ratings being the same english
Thanks for all those wonderful memories,Arazi24. Sea Bird was the greatest Arc winner of them all.
The best winner in my eyes is pentre celebre.
Mill Reef
No doubt. Ribot was the greatest

The best field ever...so many Group 1 winners in that field and a stunning victory. I`m also still wondering how he lost the Derby of 86
