Dragging Anchor ALONE in Guadeloupe

- Today was a bit of a hectic one. We're sailing south through the Caribbean in the middle of hurricane season and the weather is getting rough. Solo sailing has presented some challenging moments but between dragging anchor and struggling to pick up the worst mooring balls I've seen, lots of lessons were learned today. These are the tough moments that I feel make me a stronger captain and a stronger man as I go through them. What a blessing that we could end the day on a calm note. Hopefully this helps someone prepare for their own solo sailing or at least for a trip to Deshaies, Guadeloupe. Proud to be a member of the cruising/sailing community, a community that always lends a helping hand. Thanks for watching everyone!

For mooring balls like that. I lasso the ball with one mooring line and cleat it off for the time being. Then launch your dinghy/tender to go to the ball to put your two mooring lines through the eye to cleat off properly.
this is also a great idea, love helpful advice in the comments! Thanks!
a missed opportunity to break out my cowboy hat
Your energy and positive vibes even when going through tough times is addicting brother. Keep living your dream cuz you're inspiring the rest of us to do the same
Getting caught up on your daily vlogs. Man never a dull moment in a sailors life! Good on you helping others. Virtual high five
have been absolutely loving these videos!! wish to one day sail like you do man, great inspiration!!💯
I really appreciate that! It has been a great lifestyle switch for me and I know you can do it!
Crazy how a notification of a new video can make my day like that🔥
Happy to hear that! Lets go!
I felt the pain and struggle with that boat hook😂 at least you made it on the mooring ball and had the decency to help some others out
a lot of solo sailors will back up to the ball and deal with it off the stern where its easier to get to. Not that easy with your tender but your idea of putting on a line before going to the ball is a great idea.
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

The kindness and willingness you have to help others does not go unseen brother ❤
Loving every minute of your adventure 🫶🏾
For sure you have the best attitude about adversity. Gotta help to have such a great best friend keeping an eye on you. Hope you and Charlie have a more relaxing next few days.
Thanks Barbara! Had a very chill rainy day today. Awesome days right around the corner too!
Welcome to Guadeloupe ! Not a lot of people are using the Propane word, we say "Gaz" pronounced like gas in english. But we're mostly relying on exchange of bottles. I don't think you'd find a place to fill up yours without a car and a 30-60min ride.
Hey don't think you realized it but Death in Paradise is filmed right there where you're anchored and walking around. It's a great show and the daily vlogs have been great.
Sailor helping another sailor, though the two never met! Thanks for caring in those conditions. Great episode!
As always here for the RUclips algo but stayed for the 5 minutes of mooring ball frustration ASMR. 😂
hahaha thanks man!
Keep it up Chasing Grace, you never know when the lightening will STRIKE and your views will grow! At the least your vlog style, which I already find enjoyable, should keep getting better and more refined! Certainly alot of work on your part!
That is where you need a "The Boat Loop MT3-6 | Medium Marine Boat Loop", They work great!
We just anchored at Isle of Shoals off Maine/NH to get out of 8-10ft seas and 25-30 knot winds. The anchorage is not great for holding and its deep at 50-60ft. The worst part is there is a lee shore that is all rock and its only 200-300ft away!!!!!! If you drag thre you are on the rocks before you know it!!!! We have a Ultramarine 60KG with 300ft of chain. I put out 275ft and woke up every hour to check the swing track on the chart plotter. We did not drag an inch. That Ultramarine Anchor is the best!!!!!!
sorry you had a sleepless night! I definitely am in the market for a heavier anchor
@@ChasingGrace21 call ultra marine and get one ordered, you will sleep well. Normally i dont worry but poor holding+30 knots sustained+50-60ft deep was enough to make my worry but as i said we did not drag an inch!!!!!! Worth every penny and if you compare to other high end stainless anchors its in the ballpark.
oh man I was getting frustrated watching you fight the boat hook! What a terrible mooring ball. Stay Safe Brother!
Thanks buddy!

Most people moure to balls the "backwards" way The more you know🌠
yeahhhhh I'm learning. hopefully this helps people learn from my mistakes! lol
@@ChasingGrace21 I knew about it, but forgot about it. When you posted the PAUSE THIS slide, I said, "oh yeah..."
That mouring ball sitch was F'd, fo sho
spoke to the owner of the balls today and he says there's no line on them because people steal the line! would've never thought that was the case!
@@ChasingGrace21 I can appreciate that. Some mother's children...
Id need an anchor alarm to keep me from wrecking into something while sitting still.. lol
I use one all the time!
But did you ever go for that beer ?

❤ name him Freddy 😂
That's pretty good!
As a french it means the same thing .." propãne" its the rigth prononciation.
Great your now in a somewhat hurricane safe area. The next 5 months will be history making. Get sunglasses! Realize you must build a business model to survive! That boat you can't afford! Reality. Reach out to Zingaro, Delos even. Get knowledge from their footprints! You have the look, maybe you can grab some day jobs. Cruise ship opportunities? Offer day sails, sunset cruises! Realize what you can cut out of life! No booze, smoking of any kind, energy drinks, junk food! If you have guests! They donate to the fund! Yup! Cold but reality, you don't have income. Think outside the box! Private photos hoots! Hint
What’s the currency there?
euros! French island:)
@@ChasingGrace21 did you have them from a previous island? How did you buy groceries?
