This anime is littered with moments like this. Shoujo writing at its melodramatic finest. This is my favorite anime of all time incidentally. I got the whole DVD box set from Anime Sols some years ago.

It's the butch shoujo style of the 80s and 90s manga and anime, lol. Nowadays, we only ever have cute and obviously hyper feminine looking female characters. I wish we retain some of that old school diversity :/
This is one of my favourite anime of all time to be honest.

Best slap in anime history.
Ah yes the final slap, does 1000 damage, breaks there defences and lowers there attack but also lowers your attack lol
After Bright slap.
I have to disagree with that since Rickert from Berserk had a even more powerful slap. I’ll stop from there.

Yeah the character designs look virtually re used from aim for the ace. I was surprised they weren't the same characters.

I think one the lead animators in this series also did Legend of the Overfiend. But Osamu Dezaki was the main character designer for this series.
Damn the melodrama here is something to behold. I'm not complaining though
That's what happens when you give a 70s Shoujo manga to Dezaki to adapt, you wind up with the most gloriously over the top melodrama known to man
This was a fucking ride from start to finish.
how much melodrama? ALL THE MELODRAMA!
When the creators were asked, “How much melodrama do you plan to put in your anime?”
They replied: “Yes.” 😄
Old animation is great than the new animation

This is gold.
If anyone has seen the manga, please tell me how it’s different because I’ve heard quite a few differences between the manga and anime
Probably the idea to create a divergent narrative from the source manga was the production staff of the NHK studios.
