Shintaro medal 5 times in the US senior National Championships. He was an Olympic alternate twice. He wrestled, boxed, competed in Sambo. He has Black belts in Karate and traditional Jujitsu. He also has a brown belt in BJJ. His father is a well known master from Japan.

He’s not grabbing the sleeve a lot not because shintaro is wearing a Jui jitsu gi its because of Travis’s style that he like the Russian grip or hand behind the back with a lapel grip it’s a lot easier to get in that position.

Watching two guys at a higher level looking just like I do when I rondori makes me feel better about what I'm doing. Thanks. By the way, that first throw is seionage. The head and arm throw is kubenage.

No offence to Lubo but he doesn't seem to really know what he is talking about in the world of judo, I don't personally know him but he does seem to have knowledge of grappling on the ground from his channel. The things that Travis does are mainly his preferences, he likes doing seoi nage (shoulder throw) from the lapel so he usually doesn't mess around with the sleeves too much, when he does it is mainly to get control of an arm to push it away and make space for an entry. The koshi guruma (head and arm throw) isn't really too hard, every throw is difficult but that is probably one of the easier ones. And in a competition Travis wouldn't be causing anyone pain with the seoi nage as in the sport of judo you want a clean throw and the best way is to pull so much that rolling through just naturally occurs. If he meant he would do it in a real fight thats probably wrong too, he wouldn't go down with him, he would throw and most likely stay standing so that he would do an armbar after.

Shintaro used to wrestle in highschool .I believe there was a significant weight advantage that Steven had over Shintaro, that play a part in no gi.

I wanna take up Judo not only to be able to defend myself, but to use as a solid foundation, compete and eventually transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after 4 years. I'm 28 years old, I weigh 165 pounds. I'm tall and lean. Any tips for someone of my body type and goals when starting out?
(I will continue to cross train Judo when I transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as I am deeply interested in both and have been researching them for quite awhile now)

The ippon Stevens scored around 3 minutes was his signature ippon seoi nage. You sort of expect to see that go through since it was his bread and butter during competitive years. People knew it was coming but he would still make it happen, want it or not. You mention the grip fighting a lot and that's something that Stevens also teaches, I think it gets way too little attention in general - how important grip fighting really is to successful judo. It is worth it to win the grip battles, that's your stepping stone to a successful throw or a throw where your opponent can't stop you.
When they took the jackets off and started doing more bjj, it seemed to me that at that point they were just having fun and no longer went for it seriously.

Good to see an example of someone practicing real martial arts who's actually good at it, usually in videos like this the person doing real martial arts is not proficient. So, very nice. :)

    • @pierre2frostyy
      @pierre2frostyy Год назад

Usually it's because you see those fake "practioners" that are black belts doing fast flashy kicks and are quite impressive but not effective and modified to use in fights like if you see a high kick in taekwondo vs a low muay thai kick to the shin you would see which one is more useful and powerful

" doing fast flashy kicks and are quite impressive but not effective"
For guys who good at those kicks, they're very effective. Obviously you don't practice real martial arts.
I studied it for 2 years in high school and was never good at the complicated high kicks, but the people who were are devastatingly effective with them.
There's no "ineffective" system. There are only ineffective fighters. So basically you just told me you suck at fighting.

Sure, but that's not going to happen every time. People who are good at those kicks don't get people catching their legs all the time. Your statement was not "there is a counter" but rather "it is completely ineffective".
I mean, by your logic, no one would ever strike in any way, because the opponent could grapple them. Well, yes, they could, OR you strike could be successful.
I could just reply to you "no one should ever grapple because the opponent could just kick you in the head, game over."

As a jiu jitsu practitioner, that Origin gi which shintaro is wearing, in general, jiu jitsu gis are very grippable, you can get a lot of really good grips with them, they arent as big or as loose as judo gi's, but honestly, it shouldnt make that much of a difference from the standing position. bjj gi's have less fabric because once you are on the ground, all that extra fabric really gets in the way

@@ConveyApp There are extremely skilled purple and brown belts that can roast many black belts out there-- skill level vs belt color can be deceiving. That said, Shintaro got his black belt in 2023, about a year after this video was posted, so he would have been a brown. To say that he would be visibly improved from then to now, just because hes been awarded black, is almost certainly not true.

Collar = behind the neck. Sleeves = rists. And of course legs minus Olympic ruleset. Majority of main judo throws/takedowns can be done without gi. Btw Judo is wrestling just in JJ form.

Travis is using 10% of his power not to humiliate a guy in his own dojo . Then Travis is totally out of shape : probably 20 kilos ( 40 pounds ) heavier than competition condition.
