Finally someone explained why it is vital to get the sleeve vs lapel. Thank you Travis.
This is a really good point. I do this a lot, especially against my students but I never thought about teaching it, it was just a minor thing to me. I'm sure I picked it up from some higher-level training partner stuffing my attacks with it. Once we get back on the mats I'll be sure to bring this up. Thanks for the vid.
You're welcome Frank. I'm glad you found this helpful and it brought some things to light for you.
1:00 RvR you must control the sleeve first
1:53 RvL grip collar first, circle right
2:48 double collar makikomi counter
Heck, this even gives some logic to standing BJJ gripping entries. Just a different viewpoint.
This saves years of competitive judo, I was taught to grip with my leading hand for years and while I don´t compete much guess I was lucky but this video in short gives a lot !
Thank´s, keep the channel and the lives please-
Nico I’ll do my best to keep feeding content to the channel!!
@@TravisStevensgrappling Thank´s, the lives had a lot of content.
What needs to be my first reaction if he catches my right sleeve first? UPVOTE this comment if you don't have an immediate planned reaction for if he ***simply does the same thing to you that you are trying to do to him***
Thanks again for all the details Travis! My coach uses the sleeve exactly how you're describing and it really allows him to bully and control the flow of the match. For some reason though I never connected the dots and made the realization that the sleeve was so important. I will definitely be working on this concept when I get back to training!
Amazing!!! I hope you have success with it!
Very beneficial to watch your material regularly, thanks again...
DAMN.. always had difficulty with a really good lefty
Hopefully I see you in the live gripping workshop on Wednesday. I can answer some of your questions.
That makes sense. I know I've been frustrated by sleeve grips in the past, but I never thought to place such a high emphasis on it for my own gripping.
It will be a game changer for you.
@@TravisStevensgrappling Is there a best way to grip the sleeve so they can't in turn grip mine?
If I understand correctly: whether it's RvR or RvL, control the sleeve of the lead leg arm.
Love that your instructionals are short and to the point. Nothing complicated. Helps me absorb your info. WE talk about them at BJJ in Somersworth, NH.
I wish I was as good as travis for 1 hour so I could throw all tossers in my dojo around for fun. My favourite judoka respect from Ireland 👍
LOL
That makikomi from the double lapel looks super cool. Do you have a video on that? Or counter throws to the double lapel? Great stuff!!!
Is judo useful in a street fight for self-defense? When my sons a little older I was thinking about getting him to train
So.. Left vs right it's ok to post on the chest, but it's ALSO OK to catch the sleeve first? 😊
Yes and no you can post or grab the sleeve left on right has long as it’s with your lead had as a righty that would be your right hand
Travis your a genius man..until today I had no idea what griping was for..you seriously need to make a huge instructional
This was really cool in going to use it on my baby sister.
Just wondering in a R vs R situation, if you were aiming to set up ippon seoi nage, would you still go for opponent’s right sleeve first? (Because it seems easier to throw ippon seoi with our left hand holding opponent’s lapel for shoulder control) Thanks a lot!
Issac. That’s an amazing question and I answer it in my Mastering Seoi Nage Instructional on JudoFanatics.com. But yes you do want it to be on the collar but there is a right way and a wrong way to get it there.
interesting, but a bit ironic from a guy who did a lengthy commercial video on how to use lapel posting.
Super video !!! And Travis' partner follows him in a great manner !!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙋🏻♂️🇲🇽60 years !!
Great detail and breakdown Travis! I wish these videos existed when I did judo from 1988 to 1994 and a bit again in 1999 and 2000
the left handed person doing a makikomi throw (in the way they would as demonstrated in the video) may get DQ'd nowadays for putting his opponent in a dangerous position (throwing with an armbar if that is how the ref sees it). But I'm not a rulebook and don't know if that would happen for a fact. Always love your videos Travis!
So basically there's no such thing as perfect grips.
Life lesson for ya.
@Travis Stevens
Hi Mr Stevens - would that concept apply also in a context where your opponent is primarly focused on shooting on your legs like doubles and single leg takedowns - maybe against BJJ Players?
I found that in randori or rolling they dont really go for turn throws or much upper gripping anyway - more like ankle picks and high crotches IF they look for the takedown.
Still better to attack the sleeve?
Awesome ideas. I need to work out some plans to be able to throw some guys at the dojo. Every guy has a different posture, and I need different ways to overcome the difficulties. Your ideas help me a great deal. Now, I "just" have to practice, and to make it work. That is so much fun, I cannot wait.
Great video as a former u78kg extreme right player makes sense. Neil Adams ex world champ used to often employ a yamarashi same side lapel grip against left handlers. By the way many great competitors especially Angelo Parisi used to effectively employ a double handed grip( except against the invincible Yamashita) Travis do you also advocate gripping sleeve be the elbow depending on the situation ? Kind regards Andy
I've watched and re-watched this video many times over. Pure gold. Thank you. Jim T.
Good stuff Travis...
Thank you, I always go for the lapel first, and this vid show me how to use the sleeve grip in a more effective way!
Good tip for me a newb
gracias por compartir tus conocimientos , thank you for share your knowledge
Does anyone here have scientific Gripping by Travis on BJJ fanatics?
Bow to your sensei!
Awesome video. Could you talk about armpit grip?
*and shoulder pocket too?
I believe those are the same grips correct?
Similar but from what I've been told, armpit is lower/under the arm or even behind a little vs shoulder pocket being higher/front of shoulder.
Excellent video and key concept Travis
Thanks I’m new here, you are the best
❤
Great simple video. Thank you Travis and Riley.
Is your gripping strategy to attack and neutralize your opponent's strong sleeve side? I think that you need to have equal hand strength, because if you are trying to control your opponent strong hand with your weak hand it will be difficult to maintain a solid grip. Unless someone has cannons hands like yours.
As a righty your sleeve hand is your strong hand.
I'll work on this 💪
Makes a lot of sense! ✌️
Great topic!
Super helpful
Max was here

Travis, you like those small Gi's eh? or perhaps is the athlete "growing" :)
The gi I’m wearing is actually a little big.
@@TravisStevensgrappling dude, those are board shorts and a tshirt lol
Always awesome , thank you !!
Our pleasure!
Awesome content. I only do BJJ in my real-life classes and get relatively limited standing randori practice, so that short sleeve gripping sequence against the left-handed fighter should come in handy when I do. The sequence should be easy enough to practice during quarantine.
Try to make the live gripping workshop on Wednesday. That will help a lot with basic understanding a thinks you can do to improve
@@TravisStevensgrappling We'll be there! Thanks!
I will use it Travis! Thanks
Great!
Thanks ,Travis
You're welcome Joe!
Great content as usual, very clear that make a lot of sense ! Due to jet lag , i won't be able to attend the workshop on gripping but i have few questions to submit .
1°) Can you show us different strategy to reach ( easily:)) the sleeve ?
2°) Relay (i dont know if you use the same words), in France we call it a relay (By example , when you cross grip the collar in order to reach the sleeve)
, could you demonstrate some relay ?
3°) What if you miss the sleeve and be high gripped ? Which break gripping strategy and how to regain the advantage ?
Thanks in advance sensei
All very great questions that I’ll get answered for you!
@@TravisStevensgrappling Thanks sensei
GOLD
Thanks!
@@TravisStevensgrappling Sensei, I am currently a white belt in Judo but my Kumi Kata has shutdown alot of attacks from my opponents. Sensei Pedro and you have been a big contribution to that!
Great video man! I had replied late to your comment from the other day, asking for something like this, you read my mind.
Lol. Love it when it works out that way!
Good follow up explanation on grabbing the sleeve first. i will be using this in my judo from now on. Hello from Australia.
Termiie from Australia too!
Glad it was helpful Termiie! Let me know how it goes for you.
Yet another video of unmatched knowledge to the masses. Thank you Travis, this really makes me want to start a judo club in my damn garage. No local judo near me so...I just might have to. 👍
Do it Steve I’ll be your virtual Sensei!! 👍👍
There is always pros and cons to ones gripping up sequence. I believe your throw selection determines that. Its the song and dance between and whether your taking the lead or being lead. This is interesting. Again this is a yellow belt view. Be keen to view your next griptalk.
Hopeful we see you there on Wednesday at 8:30 pm est!
