    Nice to see Skyline Drive again from so far away. I used to live in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia for five years, 1992-1997.

    The mice situation is annoying; I feel your pain. It's why I don't usually stay in the shelters and stealth camp instead.

    So lovely getting to see you walk Skyline Drive, one of our favorite places (Blue Ridge Parkway is another). We've been driving them for over 50 years, but only hiking the AT since 2016. We like hiking the AT because it reminds us of driving the BRP and Skyline Drive, only slower!

    Reminded me of this song from my childhood…..😂😂😂 I saw a mouse!
    (Where?)
    There on the stair!
    (Where on the stair?)
    Right there!
    A little mouse with clogs on
    Well I declare!
    Going clip-clippety-clop on the stair
    Oh yeah!
    🐁🐁🐁🐁.
    Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️

    A couple of days ago you mentioned that you use Sealskinzs. Which type of Sealskinz socks do you use? We are planning to start our AT thru hike in mid February. Any tips to keep our feet warm and dry would be appreciated.

    • @TrippinSober
      @TrippinSober  2 дня назад +1

      I think the thinner ones are better if you’re going to be wearing over a regular hiking sock. It’ll stop your foot from freezing off when it’s really cold and still be bearable to wear to the next shelter or break when it warms up.

    • @johnhoadley153
      @johnhoadley153 2 дня назад +1

      Thanks. You have educated me on how they work. Today I use plastic bread bags for the same purpose. A real sock that is waterproof will work a lot better 😊. Merry Christmas.

    You were innovative to deal with mice but no need. Pass Mt Hut has a metal bear box to store food and more.

    • @TrippinSober
      @TrippinSober  2 дня назад +2

      Sometimes bear boxes are rusted out and mice can get in. I think the best option is to hang your pack and food bag from a small string in the shelter. Even if you hung your food on the bear cable I wouldn’t wanna hang my pack out there too to get all dewy.. Theres usually big nails on the wall in lieu of string but its too easy to forget a wrapper and have a mouse crawl right up the wall to chew a hole threw a pack that cost hundreds of dollars. I feel like maintainers do this specifically to stop people from hanging their food bags in the shelters. The idea that we do this with our food to deter bears is odd to me. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a black bear. In all my time on the Appalachian Trail I’ve never had one come into my camp. But in the rare occasion one did, and he got aggressive, which would be even more rare, I’ll be happy to know I have food to throw out at him to bate him away. Also, bear lines cause litter. There’s no shortage of lines that were hung up and abandoned. Grizzlies are another story.

      @danielstoddart День назад +1

      @@TrippinSober I don't understand the logic of cutting the hang lines in the shelters. If they are doing it to stop hikers from hanging their food bags, then surely a large number of hikers are not going to stay in the shelters and stealth camp, which defeats the purpose of shelters.
