  • RMS Andes was a 26,689 GRT steam turbine Royal Mail Ship, ocean liner, cruise ship, and the flagship of the Royal Mail Lines fleet. She was the second Royal Mail ship to be named after the South American Andes mountain range.
The Andes was built in Belfast in 1937-39 and completed at the outbreak of the Second World War. The Admiralty almost immediately requisitioned her as a troop ship and had her converted to carry about 4,000 troops. In troop service she broke three speed records for long-distance voyages.
Andes was converted back into a civilian liner in 1947. She entered civilian service in 1948 on RMSP's premier liner route between Southampton, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. For seven years she worked the route full-time, but from 1955 the frequency of her liner voyages decreased and she spent an increasing proportion of her time cruising. In 1959-60 she was converted at Flushing, Netherlands into a full-time cruise ship. She was scrapped at Ghent in 1971.

    Draught: 29 ft 3 in (8.92 m)
    Depth: 43.6 ft (13.3 m)

My Father served on her during the war when she was converted to a troopship. He was in the Royal Navy DEMS and was a gunner on one of her guns. He said she was an incredible ship and the best of all the ships he served on.

My mother and aunt were shipped out on the Andes after the outbreak of WWII. They travelled from Southampton to Madras. Apparently they were tracked by a U boat in the Bay of Biscay and strafed by ME109s on the way out of the docks so an eventful trip.

I don’t normally like the choice of music for a lot of these videos but I will make an exception for this one, fantastic sound track, vibrant, evocative captures the excitement of these trips probably, I have never been on a cruise

The Andes is such a lovely ship, it must have been such a relaxing and pleasurable experience to travel or cruise aboard her, illustrated by this wonderful video. Great job!

Someone's home movie but an historical record as well. This video has so much visual information and in color too. Too the music goes so well with the footage.---I've seen a movie poster for the 1953 movie "Titanic" and the poster shows the Andes seen here--but with four funnels!

One of the reasons it was scrapped was the Air Conditioning for each cabin was sea water cooled to replace would have been to much plus the engines worn out

In 1960, when I left Buenos Aires to join Terence Fishers new Hammer Production, my single cabin on board the Andes was the best place in the world to stay reading after dinner.
A very equilibrated ship design. So elegant in her lines and confortable sailing, Andes was far more a classic liner than the freaky Amazon, Aragon and Arlanza trio.

Sadly, no interior shots of cabins, dining hall, food served, etc. nor engine room. But...interesting as far as it went.

There tend to be no interior shots with this sort of thing because film that could work indoors was not usually available, neither was the lighting. I doubt it could ever have been filmed by an amateur until the 1970s. I am grateful they went to the trouble of getting as much as they have...
