This film definitely is where the possession movies all began. All practical effects, no CGI. This film had a huge cultural impact on American society.
So I watch more than 9 minutes of this video, and I'm thinking, "now you're actually going to react to the film at some point. Right?" And then the clock stops while Merrin is examining the little demon head without the slightest recognition or reaction. It was at this point that I knew I couldn't spend another half hour with these two.
Very well said ! Certainly, one of the worst if not the worst reaction of this masterpiece. Total waste of time. I just had the "courage" to watch until the 28th minute but I had to stop.
It took me at least 20 years to understand that movie. You 2 clearly didn't understand anything. Most people don't. But now it makes sense to me. But I had to read the book and go research a lot of what the author and director further explained about it. I recommend reading the book to everyone. It really explains infinitely more about the story than the movie, as 80% of the scenes were cut because running time, and they chose not to include characters' thoughts, like done in the book.
The book definitely fills in the gaps and questions you've brought up. The story, at least in the book, takes place over several months. The story is not about Reagan, it's actually about Father Karras. He's a guilt ridden priest, who's questioning his faith. But, then he's presented with something he can't explain. In the end he performs the ultimate act of love by sacrificing his life for someone he never met. Remember, he never met Reagan, he only met the demon.
Y’all were talking too much in the opening scenes 😉 a lot of people think the opening is slow and random, but you really have to pay attention to every single thing for context of things happening later in the film when Father Merrin finally comes back into it. You should also watch The cultural impact of The Exorcist here on RUclips and the interviews with William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty .

Some people don't realize that the Iraq scene wasn't a set. They flew all the way to Iraq to film that....
a curious movie . one of the most amazing movies and fascinating at the time . its still amazing even today . i guess opinions are subjective , but curious is not a word for this classic .
The story isn’t confusing your mindset is and the demon she was talking to on THE BOARD WAS. Pazuzu the demon pretending to be captain howdi and the statue in IRAQ was pazuzu the icon he found in the. Mound hole in Iraq was a idol of pazuzu
The stigma behind the Ouija board all started with this film. Prior to that, it was a board game patented by Parker Brothers. It's not ancient or satanic, or a gateway to the other side. People created the lore of the Ouija board after this film spooked people.
What I'm saying is it was more scary when people my age first saw it in the early 70s because we were more religious then but this generation finds it more disturbing because of the things the child is allowed to say which wouldn't be allowed these days
The demons usually attack troubled young people dealing with loneliness and guilt, the story is about a showdown between the demon pizzuzu and father merrin the girls parents break up and her isolation along with playing with the ouigi board made her vulnerable
This movie has nothing to do with the Conjuring. This movie is based on a true story that happened in Maryland in the 1940-1950’s in which a young boy was possessed Also, for some reason it’s NEVER explained/revealed the reason behind the possession, I guess it’s up to each viewer to decide?
Her nomination was apparently revoked there was controversy over who deserved the most credit for playing Regan. You had Linda Blair playing her physically, you had Mercedes McCambridge doing her Pazuzu possession voice, and you had Eileen Dietz portraying the face of Pazuzu that flashes around Regan.
I found out the actor playing Father Karras was Jason Patrick's father this last year from the Inside of You with Michael Rosembaum podcast (on RUclips) that had Keifer Sutherland and Jason Patrick as guests. Also I believe he was the son in law of Jackie Gleason.
I like how when Regan is being interviewed by the hypnotist her right hand was raised in the air, just like the giant demon statue in Iraq from the beginning.
His mother had edema which caused swelling of the brain. You must have been talking over the part where the uncle explained that to Damien. But that's why she was put in a psych ward.
27:52 Also, the vomit was supposed to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but the hose misfired and he got sprayed in the face. Understandably, he was furious that the effect went wrong.
Hi..i loved your description ..especially with the priest from mash. Lol. Yes not being a religious person myself though i was at 13 when i saw this. I grew to love the movie for the fantastic acting & genuine creepy atmosphere. It's just so well done. Like Jaws & the original Planet of the Apes. But again back in the 50's, 60's & 70's. You really did rely on good script & good acting. Anyway loved your reaction. Thank you✌
If you want answers,I recommend watching Exorcist 2. It’s not the best movie effects wise but it does give one for the “Why Reagan?” question, though you have to really be paying attention and not let the effects distract you.
The real life older priest told the author of the book he was sworn to secrecy so he couldn't talk about the event but said that it was a real possession. The real life younger priest, Fr. Walter Halloran, served in Vietnam and received two bronze stars for his service. He said Vietnam was far more horrifying than the exorcism. He could talk about the event and did.
Practicing spiritism (aka the ouija board) can open you to the influence of evil spirits. The ouija board was the conduit, as well as Regan befriending the spirit, that led to the possession. Father Merrin had already battled this same demon (as mentioned in the movie) in a prior exorcism. The opening scene, which was an omen, was the setting up of a rematch between Father Merrin and the demon.
When they were digging in Iraq, the dug up something that was supposed to stay buried, they released a spirit. And Regan channeled it through the Ouija Board.
It’s true though that the author and director both considered the novel and film a psychological thriller and not horror, but hey the majority of the audience probably think otherwise, thanks I enjoyed your reaction and thoughts on this classic!
This was the first horror film my dad ever watched when he was 10

GraveReacts: It's interesting to know that the film had real priests (as advisers) on the set. Friedkin tried keeping true to the novel's content as well as realistic approaches to situations... So he had advisers on the set from real doctors to real priests.
The character of father Dyer, the younger priest who got the kiss at the end, was played by William O’Malley, a Jesuit priest who was a consultant on the film.
27:26: As many times as I've seen this, it was only recently that I fully heard this line. The man servant doesn't say, "She wants no straps." but "IT wants no straps." Calling the daughter "it" to her mother's face and the mother knowing that's accurate is creepy as hell. (Truth be told, I actually used to think he was saying something about the rat traps, not straps.)
For added context, this movie was something of a "controversy" back in its day, because a few religious leaders were REALLY ticked off because of the "exaggerated" portrayal of the exorcism and the role of the church in the movie, as well as the violence (yes, this was considered VIOLENT back in the day) and blasphemous use of the cross and of the Lord's name. It was so bad that churches would FLAT OUT condemn anyone watching it without having had seen it (yes, it's reputation was THAT legendary, and every kid wanted to see it because it was so "infamous"). Yes, I'm kinda showing my age here? XD There were also the 2 prequels that was the pretty the same movie cut 2 different ways, as well as the recent TV series. I'm sure we're gonna get another movie in the franchise in the not to far off future, so probably will either be a reboot or another movie meant to build on the Exorcist mythos. Raven: I've done that "projectile" technique before (as a dog). Does that make me "Exorcist" certified? :P 17:50. Remember, filmmakers. Squishy stone is the key! Death Bed: The Bed that eats: squishy beds count, too! Manos, Hands of Fate (I exist, plus I got a sequel! The Mangler - so did I!) 18:26. You haven't shown her movies with creeper, psycho and killer therapists yet, have you? XD 23:00. They use contortionists for those types of scenes. It's still a classic being used in some lower-budget horror movies these days! :) 25:35. Possession via neck cramp? Now THERE's an original horror movie idea? XD 29:19. The thing I never got about that "cold" in the room, is that it's usually a sign of a ghost, not a demonic spirit (which has different "entity"/power set characteristics)? If it is an "unclean spirit", I guess that "kinda" qualifies? 31:22. She went on to star in the sequel, as well as starring in several other obscure horror films (both straight cut horror as well as comedy). It seems the "horror bug" bit her. 39:00. Yes. It was considered to be the "grossest" movie of its time. It also kinda brought mainstream acceptance for later filmmakers who were considered "shock jocks" of their day - filmmakers who employed violence, nudity, obscenity and pretty much every taboo in the book you can think of, usually accompanied with generous amounts of gore in an alternative genre within the already alternative genre of "modern/extreme" horror that existed within "traditional horror". Also, an entire new fanbase of horror was created by movies like these - the gore hounds. Gore hounds usually appreciate movies like Saw and Hostel, but the best gore horror you can currently find, is either extreme Asian horror (Chinese/Japan/Korean/Indonesian and Filipino horror, as well as older Italian slashers) or an Italian company called NecroStorm (their movies BARELY has a story in it, but they excel at gore effects they do practically with actors and with "puppet bodies"). Yes, I'm one of "those old school gore hounds", and I blame Hammer (studio) (and Asian horror films) for that. XD 39:47. The idea behind the demon possessing a little girl is it's about corrupting innocence (which was already part of "cinematic demon lore", but was rarely seen before the movie came out), due to people being sensitive to what happens to kids already at that time in society (and therefore, fed into the fears that Horror sought to highlight). And yes, you are also correct about the weak will of children, as well as them not knowing what "true evil" is at that age. The first couple movies of the The Omen, for example, is the best example of the "Evil Children/Killer Kids" subgenre of horror, but where it wasn't about the corrupting influence of evil on kids, but a subverted trope where kids WERE the evil (because of being conceived during an evil act or an evil spirit creating them as a vessel for itself), and they were hurting and killing innocent victims (one of several such movies). :/ 41:34. The "arrogant priest/corrupt priest/priest who lost his faith" in possession movies is a staple of the genre, sorry. XD
you guys were living for this movie lol. and you were scared too. hahahahaha. im not prone to flights of fancy....this scared the crap out of me over much more modern movies. dont know why....but this shit was over the top. cant have a movie like this now.
This phénomenal movie was at first supposed to last 4 hours . But they had to cut several scenes because it was too scary, I read one day but I do not remember who wrote it. They cut it from 4 hours to 2H30, then 2H15, then 2H00 hres. The extended version is the 2H15 version
Hi. Old here snuck in the theater at 13( same with Midnight Cowboy & Clockwork Orange) yeah i did that to myself..lol . just wanted to say is hard i guess 4 u guys 2 get scared at ANY movie.. Imagine being in a dark movie theater totally immersed & you can't (or shouldn't) speak out loud to your friend. ( i was alone) it's defiantly scarier at the movies. ✌also it was 1973 nothing like this had been done yet. Being a horror buff myself. I haven't seen a scary movie since its all been done. The original 'Carnival of Souls' was very slow & cheaply made but had some scenes that scared me back then .. 'The Thing' was just cool. ✌
Some of the reaction video’s is basically talking thru the whole film so there’s no genuine reaction or really getting into the film to truly appreciate it , bugs me
No Linda did not get the Oscar. She was beaten out by a younger actress named Tatum O'neil for the movie Paper Moon. So you must know you cannot kill Pazuzu. He got it out of Regan but the Demon still lives hence all the other sequels.
9:27 It's like how Marlon Brando was young during the filming of the original Godfather but the makeup for Vito Corleone made him look like an old man.
Why her? Merin said it.. "the point of possessing an innocent girl is to make us despair." And it didn't help that she was playing with the Ouija board and opening up portals to the spirit world.
i remember when the film switched from Iraq to the shot of Georgetown, the slow zoom in on the MacNeil house seemed like the bad spirits had made a choice.
The movie conveys the idea that the girl was possessed because she was using the OUIJA board. Many people believe that you can become possessed by a bad spirit or demon through this method.
I think that it is more disturbing that you two had so little reaction to the film most people find it pretty disturbing or at least unsettling but you show little to no reaction at all. To be so jaded at at such a young age is sad and disquieting.
I've already seen far worse than what "The Exorcist" showed me. It was groundbreaking for its time, but does not pack quick the same punch to today's audiences.
@@GraveCinema I believe I just said something to that effect….. Beware, this kind of insensitivity can lead to a greater need for sensational gore and violence until it makes you numb to genuine human suffering.
@@GraveCinema hard to be shocked by an old devil flick when today you have sophisticated horror like mad scientists sewing victim's mouths on to each others buttholes.
alot of the scenes were done by a woman named irene dietz who looked very young for her age the demons voice was done by a women who drank whiskey and smoked for over a month everyday this movie was not suppose to be a horror movie but a psychological thriller. watch the documentary on how this was made people have died the set burnt down and the only thing that didnt burn was regans room very interesting documentary
Darling are you sure you wAtched the film she played with the OUIJA BOARD CAPTAIN HOWDI WAS PAZUZU the demon of the north west wind and it isn’t CONFUSING YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS IT IS
it got to Regan by pure happenstance Merrin unleashed his old enemy and he had to fight it but he didn't know where until the church called him, and this time Pazuzu won
Great bloody watch, just found your channel so will check out some of the other vids! Love this film still holds up now! You guys should watch the 3rd one and skip the 2nd so im told, tho there are a few diff versions of 3 so dunno?
Yeah, when we start doing sequels eventually, we're definitely doing Exorcist 3. I love that one more than this one, and I've never seen 2, but hear it's crap.
@@GraveCinema The Exorcist 2 is a low-key re-do of this movie, nothing special and nothing mind blowing - some people find it underwhelming. It's basically a "spiritual rematch". The third one is better simply because it deals with another villain character and it has 2 scenes that have to be seen to be believed (you'll know it when you see it). :/
Very good reaction, if you want to continue with this franchise PLEASE only react to "The Exorcist 3" and "Exorcist: The beginning", since you can react to them as a trilogy.
For anyone who can actually pay attention and has at least average comprehension skills nothing in this film is difficult to understand. Everything fits together and everything makes sense, but it doesn't spoon feed you. It expects you to have a modicum of intelligence. It's sad, and honestly rather offensive, that the two of you....especially the young woman.....seemed to grasp virtually nothing about it. I hope you have day jobs.
@@timholder6825 There was no joke. You literally stated facts lol. It's not zool (fact) it's pazuzu (fact)... You need to work on your jokes/punch lines
One of my problems with this and some other movies, is they have these scenes with the craziest shit happening, and they just hard cut to the next day where the person is acting like they haven't just experienced the most horrific thing they ever seen. Like I want to see how the situation in that scene was calmed down. Crazy stuff just stopped happening the next second or what?
At least in the case of a priest, I can understand their behavior - they would be been used to exorcism (especially if the priest has performed exorcisms before). Family members, or people who haven't seen it happen before - yes, I get the argument there. :/
The new generation said this movie is not scary then why do you have all the lights turned on and why do you always got to have a friend with you and you always got to talk through the movie just watch the movie you don't got to talk through it and the new generation always got to have the original cut out scenes cut out I truly think if the new generation seen this movie the same time when I seen it 1 hours 11 years old they probably will shit and piss on they self I hate dogs and cats I bet you they have stink
Yes. Just keep talking over important dialogue. That's really helpful.
This film definitely is where the possession movies all began. All practical effects, no CGI. This film had a huge cultural impact on American society.
It amazes me how people don't get the foreshadowing from.the opening.
Even the play dough doll Regan made at the beginning was like the demonic statue and people don't get it lol
The book begins the same way. They refer to him as the man in the khaki pants who knows something bad is coming and all he can do is wait.
Also her drawings on the basement wall!
you and me both...too stupid....attention span of fleas

The scene where Regan punches her mom and she falls backwards...she actually injured her neck and that was an actual cry of pain.
Yes
It wasn't just random, it started because Regan had been playing with a Ouija board.
Yup. She was the one using the Ouija Board, she invited him in.
Yea that’s what I thought, she said she was talking to Captain Howdy over the ouija board. I guess that was inviting the demon in to possess her.
The stigma behind the Ouija board all started with this film. Prior to that, it was a board game patented by Parker Brothers. It's not ancient or satanic, or a gateway to the other side. People created the lore of the Ouija board after this film spooked people.
It's more disturbing than scary watching watching it 50 years later but at the time of it's release 😮

Nope, couldn't watch you guys. Too much talky talky and not enough listening
Omg she’s overthinking everything….
I found it disturbing when he licked his lips at the projectile vomit scene
Best horror ever made
I think that it is more disturbing that you two had so little reaction to the film most people find it pretty disturbing or at least unsettling but you show little to no reaction at all.
Haunting in Connecticut? Which one - there was 2 of them made? ;) :P
Good luck trying to get a 12yo to reprise the role (today) especially with the crucifix scene.
alot of the scenes were done by a woman named irene dietz who looked very young for her age the demons voice was done by a women who drank whiskey and smoked for over a month everyday this movie was not suppose to be a horror movie but a psychological thriller. watch the documentary on how this was made people have died the set burnt down and the only thing that didnt burn was regans room very interesting documentary
Irene Dietz was also the face of Pazuzu who kept showing up during the movie. She is still acting in films to this day
Is that boy of ice?
You all talk way to much. Seriously
You guys ought to show the movie so we know what parts your reacting too. If it's nots so scary, why are you holding on to your boyfriend!?
Darling are you sure you wAtched the film she played with the OUIJA BOARD CAPTAIN HOWDI WAS PAZUZU the demon of the north west wind and it isn’t CONFUSING YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS IT IS
Hey guys! It was the Ouija board that brought in a demon 👹👻
Uh, the demon came to Reagan because she unwittingly invited it into her life, via the Ouija Board. Captain Howdy is the demon. Duh!
it got to Regan by pure happenstance Merrin unleashed his old enemy and he had to fight it but he didn't know where until the church called him, and this time Pazuzu won
Alternate title: dude bro explains movie scene by scene to his girlfriend 😑
You should watch the Omen with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.
SuperB classic 👊🏻
if you put Pazuzu back in the hole you'd have to put the Christain medal that was guarding it back also
Great bloody watch, just found your channel so will check out some of the other vids!
Too much chatting about personal lives, other films, just stuff, but not the movie for me.
My favorite horror movie
Very good reaction, if you want to continue with this franchise PLEASE only react to "The Exorcist 3" and "Exorcist: The beginning", since you can react to them as a trilogy.
This is a non reaction talk talk talk too much movie reaction video.
Slow,build ups are the best.
"Help me."
10:33 I'm wearing one now. 🙄
Fr Dyer is a Jesuit priest and taught Phillip Seymore Hoffman in High School
Do we need the social commentary? Ugh
I hope you have day jobs.
let's bring the enthusiasm level of these two down a notch - so over the top
Skip and watch Exorcist 3. It is almost as good if not better. You don't even have to see the second one.
Cobwebs are flammable--use a flashlight, not a candle. Just sayin'.
15:31 A ghost farted.
It's not Zoool, it's Pazuzu (the name of the demon is revealed in Exorcist 2. BTW, don't waste your time with that one, go straight to Exorcist 3).
LOL, you didn't get it, it was a Ghostbusters joke.
@@kazzymoviefan I did get it and was making a joke/comment around that, but it went right over your head.
@@timholder6825 There was no joke. You literally stated facts lol. It's not zool (fact) it's pazuzu (fact)... You need to work on your jokes/punch lines
PUPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys are great. Next reaction
"The Return Of The Living Dead"
An
"Demons"
Demons 1 or 2? Both are "special" in their own way? :P
Oh yeah, Absolutely both.
Ok. This is a reaction muvie, but you should shut up for a minute?
They talk too much
One of my problems with this and some other movies, is they have these scenes with the craziest shit happening, and they just hard cut to the next day where the person is acting like they haven't just experienced the most horrific thing they ever seen.
I hate it when people show us no pic or sm screen
The music is not haloween

Ohhhhh for heaven's sake hon, WHAT on earth DO you consider "scary"?
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Watch her be scared in that one.
