Vietnam has a long and complex history with China, but it would be an oversimplification to say that Vietnam was simply part of ancient China.
Historically, Vietnam (anciently known as Van Lang and later as Dai Viet) was influenced by Chinese culture and governance through various periods of Chinese domination. The most notable periods of Chinese rule in Vietnam occurred during the Han Dynasty (from 111 BC to 39 AD) and again during the Tang Dynasty (from 680 to 905 AD).
However, throughout history, Vietnam also maintained a distinct cultural and political identity. It had its own dynasties, such as the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties, and often resisted Chinese rule.
In essence, while there were significant periods of Chinese influence and control, Vietnam has a rich and separate history that is distinct from China. The relationship between the two countries has been marked by both cooperation and conflict, reflecting their complex historical ties.
