allof those films are not even close compared to interstellar,inception dark knight,pirates of the carribean lol. Most of movies u mentioned were watched by teens in 2000' and they wont be watched in future i bet
How the HELL did Joe Hisaishi NOT make this list? He's magnificent! I listen to his material daily as background music to pretty much everything I do at home. My kids can sing Sanpo from Totoro and they don't even know how to speak Japanese, that's how frequently it's played lol.
I was just gonna say as much. I agree. To NOT at least mention his Superman theme on this video is,.. well,.. without wanting to sound too dramatic, sacrilege.
To be completely honest with you, the Superman soundtrack is recognisable and all... but I don't think it's that good :/ His other work, though, is fantastic, and he totally deserves the first place. Just not for that particular score.
Well, I honestly think the Dark Knight's score is better, but maybe that's because I prefer the darker, more brooding tone of the movie, and how well the soundtrack reflects that.
I think thomus Newman is really underrated , nobody is talking about him . He gave music for Shawshank , green mile , American Beauty , Nemo , wall e , skyfall , 1917 . He is an 15 times Oscar nominee
Brabbel93 No you didnt. But there are more than one memorable track from the LOTR-trilogy. I could hum atleast 5 of them in the blink of an eye. Compare that to some of the names placed before him on this list, can you hum any of Herrmann's tracks other than Psycho? Can you hum any of Elfmans tracks other than the Batman theme? Both Psycho and Batman have memorable themes, but the themes are the only memorable tracks in these movies..
So you decided to leave out Alan Menken? What's wrong with you WM?!?! He's one of the most acclaimed composers, and has won many awards, 42 in total, including Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys, and more! I know that he is not that famous among the ones on the list but he could have easily got an honorable mention. ~~~~~~ Notable works: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and a The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tangled, Enchanted, and many TV series.
I don't get why he isn't famous. He is the only composer who ever won acadamy awards for best sound track AND best song two years in a row. With eight academy awards the only composer who has more is Alfred Newman (who wasn't mentioned either).
Alan mgm To be precise, Howard Ashman was the lyricist until he unfortunately died way too young after Beauty and the Beast was completed. Alan Menken has since then worked with different songwriters. But half of his awards he won working with Ashman. They were a great team.
I know, Ashman and Menken created some of the most memorable and beautiful disney songs in history. Menken also worked with Stephen Swartz, Tim Rice and more.
Where the hell was John Barry!!! Most versatile by a mile and how can you not acknowledge his work on the James Bond theme? His arrangement of that little squiggle of music his EPIC!
His work on The Lion King (only oscar win), Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and Inception are his only true masterpieces imo. Not that 4 masterpieces is a small number, but not everything he pumps out is gold
Paul Meredith Zimmer tends to repeat himself so much that if I can't sleep I put "Pirates.of the Carribean" in my DVD player and I'm gone in 15 minutes. He has all the subtlety of a train wreck. Gladiator is another good film made boring.
I know right? I'll never forget hearing Johann Johannson's amazing music in Prisoners for the first time and how nobody I talked to about the film had even heard of him or the film.
Decent list, but it leans a little too heavily on recent composers (all WatchMojo lists seem to cater a little young at the expense of historical consensus, which is the closest thing we can get to objectivity in these fields). For instance, Danny Elfman at #2, but no Max Steiner? Still, they got the correct #1, and in the end, that's what matters. Also happy that Hermann was so high up.
Nardo Vogt Question: Are WatchMojo top 10s now entirely based on votes? From my memory, the earlier videos used to be somewhat based on voting, but largely curated by the editors/employees of WatchMojo. If they are now compiled entirely by online voting, it makes me wonder why they even employ anyone anymore, other than to put together the RUclips clipshows. I hope there is some effort that goes into making these lists other than online voting, since--you are right--the WatchMojo audience is largely young and inexperienced when it comes to the subjects of the lists. Not saying that's a bad thing, since I'm also quite young and inexperienced with MOST things. But I don't think I should be the final authority for any sort of accurate list either.
As far as I know, it is still a mixture of voting and curation, as you said. I think that the voting is doing a big part - the curation is basically a safety net.
Nah bro that’s cap have you fucking heard the original Batman music it’s sooo good same with nightmare and corpse bride and way more while Hans only has stupid pirates
i think thomas newman should be in the list top5 he done american beauty, shankshaw redemption, road to perdition, the green mile. honorable mentions : john barry, bill conti, ennio morricone should be top 3
1- John Williams 2- Ennio Morricone 3- Hans Zimmer 4- Bernard Herrmann 5- Danny Elfman 6- James Horner 7- Alan Silvestri 8- Jerry Goldsmith 9- Howard Shore 10- James Newton Howard
Michael Giacchino is easily becoming one of the greatest composers. He's done The Incredibles, Up, Jurassic World, Inside Out, Tomorrowland, and a ton more!
The piece that you showcase for Days of Heaven was not composed by Morricone, but by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, from his Carnival of the Animals suite, Aquarium movement. Because it's the opening score of the movie, everyone mistakenly assumes it to be written by Morricone.
Ennio Morricone is a GENIUS. He has even inspired the ones came after him like Hans Zimmer (as Zimmer himself said). He made the history of music, not only cinema scores, he should be FIRST.
Yes! Hes a genius. But americans hate it when they arent Nr. 1. Cant stand the fact Italians and Germans are always better than them in anything :). And that says Mike Pence, lol
How come you forgot to mention "Schindler's list" when talking about Williams! That theme was the definition of perfection, so emotional and timeless. In my opinion his greatest achievement, with all due respect to his other classics.
Lizzie87 Also no mention of Superman, but to be fair to Watchmojo, WIlliams has composed so many amazing soundtracks, that its hard to try and fit all of them in.
Exactly, they always stick to the usual suspects with Williams. They should also mention his more intimate works such as Empire of the Sun, Memoirs of a Geisha, War Horse, Lincoln to name a few.
WHERE'S JOE HISAISHI?! He made most of the songs from studio ghibli! (ponyo, princess mononoke, my neighbor totoro, spirited away, howl's moving castle, porco rosso, and kiki's delivery service!)
My top 10 1. Thomas Newman (1917, Shawshank Redemption, Skyfall, American Beauty, Nemo) 2. Hans Zimmer (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk) 3. John Williams (Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Home Alone) 4. Ennio Morricone (The Exorcist ||, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, The Hateful Eight, Mission To Mars) 5. John Barry (His classic James Bond soundtracks) 6. Justin Hurwitz (First Man, La La Land) 7. David Arnold (90s and 00s James Bond scores) 8. Alan Sylvestri (Cast Away, The Walk, Back To The Future) 9. James Horner (Titanic) 10. Jerry Goldsmith (Poltergeist)
Good4josh his music fits the movies, but it's not often very "Musical" per-say. I like trent's work with everything he does, and I do consider him one of the biggest engineers and composer currently active, but in an "All time" list he does't quite make it for me.
Conan the Barbarian, The Hunt for Red October, Robocop, White Fang, Quigley Down Under, and a bunch of other excellent scores that this host has never heard of. Should have been top 5.
I think John gets it just because he's simply had more scores that have stayed with us after we heard the music and saw the movies. However, I really think Hans should have been second
How much of the others have you heard? Zimmer's my 2nd favourite composer but he is way too popular. Everyone knows him while no one knows Howard. That's the reason he's appearing on so many lists on number one...lists that say Two Steps From Hell are film composers.
In my opinion Zimmer is up there on first together with Williams. But Morricone should be way higher. His music was essential in the reinvention of the Western genre by Sergio Leone.
I love Hans Zimmer - Inception, Gladiator and Interstellar are three of the finest soundtracks ever made. But no. John Williams is untouchable in the number one slot. His music is Iconic.
John Williams : Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Home Alone, Schindler's List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Harry Potter 1&3, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Book Thief
It would have been nice to have seen somewhere on this list the likes of Basil Poledouris (Robocop, Quigley Down Under, Conan the Barbarian, Starship Troopers) as well as Bill Conti (Karate Kid, Rocky). And I know they need to keep this video to a certain length, but it would have been nice to hit on some additional scores some of these composers have done: Jerry Goldsmith - First Blood and Alien; James Newton Howard - King Kong; James Horner - Braveheart; Alan Silvestri - Castaway; Hans Zimmer - Thelma and Louise; Danny Elfman - Spider-Man; John Williams - Superman. But I know that would make the video way long.
C'mon, Zimmer deserved #2. Maybe he wasn't as iconic as Hermann or Elfmann, but in terms of raw quality, he is one of, if not the best working today. His music has so many layers, and is so unique. I'm not jabbing at most composers, but it's really all just strings and drums today, yet Zimmer is actually unique.
My top 10: 1) Ennio Morricone 2) John Williams 3) James Newton Howard 4) Danny Elfman 5) Jerry Goldsmith 6) Howard Shore 7) Vangelis 8) Elliot Goldenthal 9) Thomas Montgomery Newman 10) John Barry
My List 1. Enio Morricone 2. John Williams 3. Danny Elfman 4. Bernard Hermann 5. Hans Zimmer 6. Alan Silvestri 7. Howard Shore 8. James Horner 9. James Newton Howard 10. John Goldsmith
No John Murphy? C'mon, the mans a genius. 'In The House, In A Heartbeat' from 28 Days Later is one of the most easily recognisable themes ever, and the work on Sunshine and Kick-Ass backs that up. Also, Zimmer should have been number 2, and Clint Mansell should have been higher purely for the theme in Requiem For A Dream.
I like John Murphy, Sunshine is one of my favourite soundtracks of all time however he tends to rehash his music a lot which is probably why he isn't on the list
That's the problem with Mansell. To be a Top10 composer you should do better than writing one cool melody. I listened to Requiem for a Dream and the theme is the only good thing about the score. ANd even then, the 6 minutes Remix for the LOTR trailers are better.
Ennio Marricone is only 10? Are you kidding me? How is that even possible?

I agree with John Williams being number one, but seriously, no Vangelis? Not even an honorary mention? I'm disappointed.
It might be because that Chariots of Fire theme was played into the ground. Too much of a good thing, maybe.
sometimes I feel like the only person that listens to the Bladrunner score
I loved Vangelis' music for "The Bounty."
Blade Runner Blues is his masterpiece
My Top 5:
1)James Horner
2)Hans Zimmer
3)John Williams
4)Ennio Morricone
5)Howard Shore
Christoffer ten Hoopen no John is best nuff said
Horner is best
I know that when the video came out, he wasn't so famous yet, but today Michael Giacchino should be more than just an honorable mention.
Agreed
Hans is only 4? Gosh he deserves so much more.
Obi-Wan Cannoli yup
Agreed!
Amrit Pannu actually no
you are rigth
Problem is, Zimmer is a fraud. He has ghostwriters that compose most of his scores.
1. Ennio Morricone ( Ecstasy of Gold )
2. John Williams ( star wars theme)
3. James Horner/ Thomos Newmann
4. Hans Zimmer ( Intersstellar is God work)
5. Howard Shore
6. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
7. Jerry Goldsmith / Brad Fiedal
8. James Newton Howard
9. Alaxandre Desplate / Steve jablonsky
10. Danny Elfman / Alan sylvestre
Thank God Alan Silverstri is coming back for Avengers Infinity War
The Avengers Age of Ultron theme wasn't bad Brian Tyler and Danny Elfman did a good job they respected it but put their own stamp on it at the same time plus it was reused in the movie
Funny because Composed Even Endgame. And his Score was the Best Part of the Whole Movie.
He did amazing in Endgame
@@prestonfernandes2071 cuz the movie itself kinda sucked lmao
He composed one my favorite themes to an Underrated gem movie MouseHunt.
I really feel like Howard Shore deserves a higher spot. His use of light motifs is nothing short of outstanding.
can't agree more.
those light motifs were just... distinct.
soothing and heavenly would be the words just to start with praising it.
A lot of his LOTR music gives me pure joy I can't describe it, I listen to all LOTR probably atleast 20 times each song
Regardless of position, Shore has the greatest soundtrack of all time in LOTR
When you compose Star Wars, Superman, Harry Potter, Jarassic park, Home alone, Jaws and Indiana Jones, you know you are #1.
allof those films are not even close compared to interstellar,inception dark knight,pirates of the carribean lol. Most of movies u mentioned were watched by teens in 2000' and they wont be watched in future i bet
@milan djukic yeah that's why John Williams won 5 Oscar's lol 🤣
Joe Hisaishi should've been on the list.
bias americans
Great and influential contemporary composer. Specialized in video game music though. Has he written a lot for film?
Joe Hisaishi is the composer of almost every Studio Ghibli film.
Definetely!
How the HELL did Joe Hisaishi NOT make this list? He's magnificent! I listen to his material daily as background music to pretty much everything I do at home. My kids can sing Sanpo from Totoro and they don't even know how to speak Japanese, that's how frequently it's played lol.
You didn't even mention that John Williams also wrote the original superman soundtrack as well as all his other greats
I was just gonna say as much. I agree. To NOT at least mention his Superman theme on this video is,.. well,.. without wanting to sound too dramatic, sacrilege.
To be completely honest with you, the Superman soundtrack is recognisable and all... but I don't think it's that good :/
His other work, though, is fantastic, and he totally deserves the first place. Just not for that particular score.
Ian cd I personally think its one of his best. differences of opinions I guess.
John William's Superman score is still the greatest superhero score of all time!!
I was surprised Nino Rota wasnt even on the list :/
Should have been
1. Williams
2. Zimmer
3. Shore
the problem with Shore is, that most of his music outside of Middle Earth is pretty unmemorable
Brabbel93 Yet so many of his tracks from LOTR are memorable. Only Zimmer and Williams has as many.
barcafredde well, I didn't way anything against his middle earth music, read again.
But can you um the music of Se7en or Silence of the Lambs to me?
Brabbel93 No you didnt. But there are more than one memorable track from the LOTR-trilogy. I could hum atleast 5 of them in the blink of an eye.
Compare that to some of the names placed before him on this list, can you hum any of Herrmann's tracks other than Psycho? Can you hum any of Elfmans tracks other than the Batman theme? Both Psycho and Batman have memorable themes, but the themes are the only memorable tracks in these movies..
@@TaliesinBHeidkamp there's no problem. With such an iconic soundtrack, you don't need more!
~~~~~~
Notable works: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and a The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tangled, Enchanted, and many TV series.
I don't get why he isn't famous. He is the only composer who ever won acadamy awards for best sound track AND best song two years in a row. With eight academy awards the only composer who has more is Alfred Newman (who wasn't mentioned either).
Actually 3 years in a row.
They're is so underrated
+Gillian Orley
You're totally wrong, Alan Menken was the composer, Howard Ashman* was the lyricist.
Alan mgm To be precise, Howard Ashman was the lyricist until he unfortunately died way too young after Beauty and the Beast was completed. Alan Menken has since then worked with different songwriters. But half of his awards he won working with Ashman. They were a great team.
I know, Ashman and Menken created some of the most memorable and beautiful disney songs in history. Menken also worked with Stephen Swartz, Tim Rice and more.
When I saw Elfman at number 2, I was like, who could be better than him. Then when I saw number 1 I was like "oh ok, that makes sense"
Where the hell was John Barry!!!
Most versatile by a mile and how can you not acknowledge his work on the James Bond theme? His arrangement of that little squiggle of music his EPIC!
Absolutely, a travesty
"So, let's see who are the 9 ones below Zimmer"
Oh.
His work on The Lion King (only oscar win), Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and Inception are his only true masterpieces imo. Not that 4 masterpieces is a small number, but not everything he pumps out is gold
*Howard Shore
metalrr5 Have you not listened to the Interstellar soundtrack?
Just about to say that
Alexandre Desplat? That man is a genius and his scores are poetic and brilliant !
Totally agree! His work on Harry Potter was amazing!
Jack Mason His score for Godzilla not so much
Though his work on stuff like Fantastic Mr.Fox, Moonrise Kingdom or Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium are just beautiful
4:39 A music that pierce through your heart
These comment... Hans zimmer... hans zimmer 1!!.... Probably the only composer they know...
Or just because his scores are the most obvious, blunt and loud. I like his work, but there's almost no suddlety.
Paul Meredith
I agree, although I do like many of his scores, you can tell that many of them are quite similar
Paul Meredith Zimmer tends to repeat himself so much that if I can't sleep I put "Pirates.of the Carribean" in my DVD player and I'm gone in 15 minutes. He has all the subtlety of a train wreck. Gladiator is another good film made boring.
ahabtheplant "He repeats himself" then: "He's not subtle enough". gg mate.
Hit the nail on the head. They probably also don't realize that Hans Zimmer doesn't even write half of the music he's credited for, like POTC.
No John Powell? How to Train Your Dragon would probably be just as good without dialogue thanks to him....
I'm about to flame you
JOHN POWELLL YAYYYAYAY
Ariel_of_Narnia Get out
Ariel_of_Narnia piss off
HECK YES! I LOVE the HTTYD soundtrack. Both one and two. I listen to them on repeat all the time.
Just because a composers music is more famous doesn't make it better.
I know right? I'll never forget hearing Johann Johannson's amazing music in Prisoners for the first time and how nobody I talked to about the film had even heard of him or the film.
Madgegames I think he's nominated for this year's Academy Awards if I recall correctly.
Nick D'Amato That's great news. Shame he wasn't nominated for Prisoners though.
Totally agree with you!! I find the music of Star Wars and Indiana Jones annoying. The Lion King soundtrack is probably the best I've ever heard.
Madgegames
wish i could give you more thumbs up
johannson is such an amazing composer!
fordlandia thrills me even after hearing it the 100´s time
Haha what? Putting morricone tenth is like putting pelé tenth among the best players.
A heresy.
1. John Williams.
2. Hans Zimmer.
3. Alexandre Desplat.
4. Michael Giacchino.
5. Howard Shore.
I would put Howard Shore at 3rd place tho
Indont see Isaichi Inbudokan in that list
No but here is my ranking :
1) John Williams.
2) A.R. Rahman (Indian music composer).
3) Ilaiyaraaja (Indian music composer).
Hans is soo overrated he co-wrote most of his scores anyway
Yesss Michael Giacchino! Finally someone who mentions him.
Decent list, but it leans a little too heavily on recent composers (all WatchMojo lists seem to cater a little young at the expense of historical consensus, which is the closest thing we can get to objectivity in these fields). For instance, Danny Elfman at #2, but no Max Steiner?
Still, they got the correct #1, and in the end, that's what matters. Also happy that Hermann was so high up.
Reading all these comments right now, I find it strange that hardly anyone has mentioned Hermann...
Perhaps it has something to do that a current audience is doing the voting - so of course, it's a bit biased towards "younger" composers.
Nardo Vogt Question: Are WatchMojo top 10s now entirely based on votes? From my memory, the earlier videos used to be somewhat based on voting, but largely curated by the editors/employees of WatchMojo. If they are now compiled entirely by online voting, it makes me wonder why they even employ anyone anymore, other than to put together the RUclips clipshows. I hope there is some effort that goes into making these lists other than online voting, since--you are right--the WatchMojo audience is largely young and inexperienced when it comes to the subjects of the lists.
Not saying that's a bad thing, since I'm also quite young and inexperienced with MOST things. But I don't think I should be the final authority for any sort of accurate list either.
epon1357 I know, crazy, right? I was happy at least he was on the WatchMojo list. I was a little worried he might not show up at all.
As far as I know, it is still a mixture of voting and curation, as you said. I think that the voting is doing a big part - the curation is basically a safety net.
Hans zimmer>danny elfman
Just ask justice league
What the fuck ?? Do you even know Danny Elfman
Nah bro that’s cap have you fucking heard the original Batman music it’s sooo good same with nightmare and corpse bride and way more while Hans only has stupid pirates
James horner > hans Zimmer
@@user-mx6ij9sn9s Alan Silvestri > James Horner
@@cineomaniac3388 horner is greatest for me till date. silvestri is great specially back to the future theme is melodious.
Plot Twist: Thomas Newman is actually, the best
David Arnold (Stargate, Independence Day, Tomorrow Never Dies) and Basil Poledouris (Conan, RoboCop, The Hunt for Red October) are vastly underrated.
hans zimmer 4 wtf? should have been 2
Agreed. I fucking loved the man of steel score
yup
Should have been number 1.
+Bruce wayne number 2 :)
i know right its such bs he should have made at least 2 he rocked in man of steel and bvs
Top 3
3. Howard Shore
2. Hans Zimmer
1. John Williams (duh)
John Williams is the most obvious choice on these lists, best ever.
i think thomas newman should be in the list top5 he done american beauty, shankshaw redemption, road to perdition, the green mile. honorable mentions : john barry, bill conti, ennio morricone should be top 3
Zino Wan Kenobi “He done”? Duuuuuude.
My favorite is Steve Jablonsky.
also
I'm so sad he isn't here
You forgot to mention Schindler's List for John Williams.
1- John Williams
2- Ennio Morricone
3- Hans Zimmer
4- Bernard Herrmann
5- Danny Elfman
6- James Horner
7- Alan Silvestri
8- Jerry Goldsmith
9- Howard Shore
10- James Newton Howard
What about Giorgio Morodor?
I would have put Philip Glass at least on the honorable mention list.
Fuck that. Morricone should've been in the Top 3.
Michael Giacchino is easily becoming one of the greatest composers. He's done The Incredibles, Up, Jurassic World, Inside Out, Tomorrowland, and a ton more!
Don't forget his soundtrack for Medal of Honor, it is honestly better than most movies scores IMO.
TheAnimatorOfficial and he just did Rogue One
wtf… 1:43 is not an Ennio Morricone piece. It’s Carnaval des Animaux, written in 1886 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.
However I appreciate John Williams' talent, Danny Elfman have always been and will always be my favourite.
The piece that you showcase for Days of Heaven was not composed by Morricone, but by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, from his Carnival of the Animals suite, Aquarium movement. Because it's the opening score of the movie, everyone mistakenly assumes it to be written by Morricone.
Ennio Morricone is a GENIUS. He has even inspired the ones came after him like Hans Zimmer (as Zimmer himself said). He made the history of music, not only cinema scores, he should be FIRST.
Yes! Hes a genius. But americans hate it when they arent Nr. 1. Cant stand the fact Italians and Germans are always better than them in anything :). And that says Mike Pence, lol
My favourites: 1 Hans Zimmer
2 ennio morricone
3 Ramin djwadi
4 John Williams
5 James horner
6 Alan silvestri
The example from Days of Heaven is actually The Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saens.
How come you forgot to mention "Schindler's list" when talking about Williams! That theme was the definition of perfection, so emotional and timeless. In my opinion his greatest achievement, with all due respect to his other classics.
Lizzie87 Also no mention of Superman, but to be fair to Watchmojo, WIlliams has composed so many amazing soundtracks, that its hard to try and fit all of them in.
Exactly, they always stick to the usual suspects with Williams. They should also mention his more intimate works such as Empire of the Sun, Memoirs of a Geisha, War Horse, Lincoln to name a few.
Home alone also
You guys gotta do Top 10 Game Score Composers
Vote here: watchmojo.com/suggest/Top+10+Video+Game+Composers
Also add suggestions for who you think should be one the list! :)
If SOule and Schyman aren't in there I cry
Well Hans Zimmer made music for COD
Fran Cizmek Actually it was Lorne Balfe, Hans only composed the main theme.
djdj165 sadly, many people don't know the difference anymore
Min 1:50 is not composed by Morricone, it’s Camille Saint-Saens’ Aquarium, part of the Carnival of the Animals
Hans Zimmer because every movie he does the music is legendary my favorite is Pirates Of The Caribbean that is the best movie soundtrack ever
Its derived from the gladiator sountrack tho and IMO gladiator is a better soundtrack overall
Henry Mancini? Basil Poledouris? John Barry? Lalo Schifrin? ...
WHERE'S JOE HISAISHI?! He made most of the songs from studio ghibli! (ponyo, princess mononoke, my neighbor totoro, spirited away, howl's moving castle, porco rosso, and kiki's delivery service!)
Also alot of great music for Takeshi Kitano movies.
My top 10
1. Thomas Newman (1917, Shawshank Redemption, Skyfall, American Beauty, Nemo)
2. Hans Zimmer (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk)
3. John Williams (Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Home Alone)
4. Ennio Morricone (The Exorcist ||, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, The Hateful Eight, Mission To Mars)
5. John Barry (His classic James Bond soundtracks)
6. Justin Hurwitz (First Man, La La Land)
7. David Arnold (90s and 00s James Bond scores)
8. Alan Sylvestri (Cast Away, The Walk, Back To The Future)
9. James Horner (Titanic)
10. Jerry Goldsmith (Poltergeist)
WHAT THE HELL ENNIO IS TEN
If John Williams isn't #1...
Good. You made it this time, WatchMojo...
However, I'm disappointed in the lack of a mention of Trent Reznor
Good4josh his music fits the movies, but it's not often very "Musical" per-say. I like trent's work with everything he does, and I do consider him one of the biggest engineers and composer currently active, but in an "All time" list he does't quite make it for me.
Tarks Gaming you sir, are completely twisted
Basil Poledouris should have got an honorable mention.
Definitely
Hell yeah
Absolutely! Just Barbar Conan is enough for it.
Came here hoping to find this comment.
Conan the Barbarian, The Hunt for Red October, Robocop, White Fang, Quigley Down Under, and a bunch of other excellent scores that this host has never heard of. Should have been top 5.
James Newton Howard, Jerry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman are the best composers, I love listening to their scores
And John Williams
Where is John Barry!!!!!!!
+Tom Rhys Davies i'm with you 1000%
+daniel hale God rest his soul.
+Tom Rhys Davies You are so correct. Barry should replace Zimmer, who usually employs 'ghost writers' for his music.
+Fifth Continent Hey, Zimmer was my favourite composer for DC Comics.
What you mean is Kazuma Jinnouchi
No what we said was that John Barry was the best composed for films😂
Knew #1 before I even clicked...
Nope. Hans Summer should've got it. But John is very close to him imo.
+The Wonderful and Mythical World of Salmacis agreed
I think John gets it just because he's simply had more scores that have stayed with us after we heard the music and saw the movies. However, I really think Hans should have been second
do i care? Shut the fuck up
Williams was first but should’ve been 4th or 5th.
Some other honorable mentions:
Trent Reznor
Charlie Clouser
John barry
Jack Webb 007,.. The name's Bond,..... James Bond.
John Powell (Face/Off, How To Train Your Dragon...)
Mia Sualen Alan Menken should be on the list as well
Cliff Martinez
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
This beautiful song by Howard Shore
My favourites have to be Hans Zimmer, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, John Powell and Michael Giacchino.
John Williams is the best no doubt
Totally agree!!!
i think hans zimmer beats all the others on this list, he is too awesome
No
John Williams nuff said
How much of the others have you heard? Zimmer's my 2nd favourite composer but he is way too popular. Everyone knows him while no one knows Howard. That's the reason he's appearing on so many lists on number one...lists that say Two Steps From Hell are film composers.
You have a very small repertoire
Hans Zimmer is undeniably innovative and iconic but my top three would be
3. Danny Elfman
2. Hans Zimmer
1. John Williams
In my opinion Zimmer is up there on first together with Williams.
But Morricone should be way higher. His music was essential in the reinvention of the Western genre by Sergio Leone.
I love Hans Zimmer - Inception, Gladiator and Interstellar are three of the finest soundtracks ever made.
But no. John Williams is untouchable in the number one slot. His music is Iconic.
@@williamegan6756 none of those two can be compared.
Well Morricone invented movie soundtracks as we now them today, he brought arranging music up to another galaxy, he has made over 400 soundtracks
Where is Ramin Djawadi?
Game of Thrones FTW
Jon Snow He is very good. But hasn't done that much movies.
darove pacific rim, warcraft, got, westworld, etc. still better than %90 of this list.
He is a TV, not a movie composer, thats why ! ;)
For those who are criticizing Ramin keep in mind that he is student of Hans Zimmer
John Williams :
Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Home Alone, Schindler's List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Harry Potter 1&3, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Book Thief
Misses probably the second/third biggest franchise
He composed Harry Potter 1 2 and 3
It would have been nice to have seen somewhere on this list the likes of Basil Poledouris (Robocop, Quigley Down Under, Conan the Barbarian, Starship Troopers) as well as Bill Conti (Karate Kid, Rocky).
And I know they need to keep this video to a certain length, but it would have been nice to hit on some additional scores some of these composers have done: Jerry Goldsmith - First Blood and Alien; James Newton Howard - King Kong; James Horner - Braveheart; Alan Silvestri - Castaway; Hans Zimmer - Thelma and Louise; Danny Elfman - Spider-Man; John Williams - Superman. But I know that would make the video way long.
Basil is the best!
Alan silvestri also composed Lilo and Stitch, the night at the museum trilogy and the stuart little movies.
John Barry, David Arnold, John Carpenter, and Brad Fiedel all deserve at least an honorable mention.
and Basil Poledouris
John Barry should be hovering near the top of the list just for OUT OF AFRICA.
Zimmer #2, John Williams #1
C'mon, Zimmer deserved #2. Maybe he wasn't as iconic as Hermann or Elfmann, but in terms of raw quality, he is one of, if not the best working today. His music has so many layers, and is so unique. I'm not jabbing at most composers, but it's really all just strings and drums today, yet Zimmer is actually unique.
Marky Baloogah I completely agree with you. Zimmer and Williams are the best!
My top 10:
1) Ennio Morricone
2) John Williams
3) James Newton Howard
4) Danny Elfman
5) Jerry Goldsmith
6) Howard Shore
7) Vangelis
8) Elliot Goldenthal
9) Thomas Montgomery Newman
10) John Barry
Just the fact that you didn't mention Hans Zimmer at all in that in the top 10 makes this easily the worst top 10 in the whole comment section
@@ktelv2855 not only for that... for ignoring James Horner also... most unreasearched comment in the whole comment section...
5. Hans Zimmer
6. Alan Silvestri
7. Howard Shore
John Williams. Please be on the list.
Of course he is.
he's first
You never know with watchmojo lol
osnapitzlai y It's based on public opinion. Go vote ifyou want your faves in the top ten for the next video.
osnapitzlai y yeah, like watchmojo will not vote for starwars. Anything that has to do with starwars will always be #1 on their list
No John Murphy? C'mon, the mans a genius. 'In The House, In A Heartbeat' from 28 Days Later is one of the most easily recognisable themes ever, and the work on Sunshine and Kick-Ass backs that up. Also, Zimmer should have been number 2, and Clint Mansell should have been higher purely for the theme in Requiem For A Dream.
John Murphy should have been top 5
I like John Murphy, Sunshine is one of my favourite soundtracks of all time however he tends to rehash his music a lot which is probably why he isn't on the list
That's the problem with Mansell. To be a Top10 composer you should do better than writing one cool melody. I listened to Requiem for a Dream and the theme is the only good thing about the score. ANd even then, the 6 minutes Remix for the LOTR trailers are better.
***** 28 weeks later as well, though you could argue that it's fine as it's a sequel.
John Murphy and Clint Mansell automatically popped up in my head. I'm glad someone else agrees. They're my two favorites.
rip James Horner & Jerry Goldsmith.
1. John Williams
2. Joe Hisaishi
3. Michael Giacchino
Alexandre Desplat not being on this list is outrageous though.
Yeah, my bad. I meant in the actual top ten.
