My Favorite parts of Your Reactions is when You Pause the Song and Try to Explain Your Emotions. The Funny Thing is, Your Expressions on Your Faces Tell Us. To answer one of your questions, Adam, lead guitar, Justin, bassist, Danny, drummer, write the music, and then they give it to Maynard, and he writes the lyrics. Thank You for Reacting to this Track, You Two are AWESOME 😎

Andrei said 'There are not words to describe the greatness. I try to listen and process the words, to think about them, but the music takes control.'
This is insightful and such a brilliant coice on the part of Maynard to just.... let the last half of this song go. After singing the verse which is, to me, the culmination of TOOL, what else can you do?

Danny the drummer, Adam guitarist and Justin the bassist are composing the music. Then they give it to Maynard the vocalist and he is writing his lyrics and melody around music. Thats why his vocal is like another instrument. It flows with music. Perfect example of that is "Schism" and "The Grudge"

    • @miscmeme
      @miscmeme Год назад +10

The Patient, Disposition, Lateralus and Right in Two are also some more great examples of him creating the narrative and vocal rhythm just from being sent an instrumental version. "Extremely talented and creative" does no justice. I'm still amazed at how great this album is. Even more so considering how much time it took between 10,000 days to Fear Inoculum. And that they weren't just releasing music that copied or mimicked their biggest hits. Each song stands out with its own merit.

Do it. Some will take more listens, but weirdly enough, the more you listen to even the stuff you weren't really into originally, they will become some of your favorites. And then if you somehow end up taking a break from them like I did unintentionally for a couple of years, going back to them will blow your mind how totally unique and intense they are.

They all, each member, has their own part in the creation of this Unique Art! Many say too many chef`s destroy the pot! Not with Tool, I call it layering of their styles! This is my favorite Tool song, I love to listen to it at night in bed with my headphones on and just lose myself for awhile in the dark and the fantastic music. Maynard's voice starts out so ethereal and almost haunting and then moves into such strong power to get his message across. And what a message, this is one where you really do need to search out the lyrics.

In the first place the band without the singer write the music. Mostly songs come together from hours long jams, they take parts and bits and make it a whole, as drummer Danny Carey and guitarist Adam Jones often stated. They are very organic as a band and pay attention to every single detail. Only when the music is done they'll give it to singer Maynard James Keenan who writes the lyrics to the songs. Also they are masters is recording, production and mixing. Particularly this song is a masterpiece of audio design and music production. Absolutely beautiful!

For TOOL songs, the bassist, drummer, and guitarist create the music and Maynard writes the vocals for the songs afterwards. In terms of losing Maynard's voice and lyrics in the songs, he has said he considers his voice just another instrument being played. When theses songs are engineered you'll often notice his voice is mixed in the middle of the song or behind some of the instrumentation, most bands vocals are placed in front of the music.

    0:41 well put
1:33 I completely agree. Their music almost forces you to invest in it to get the reward
5:57 he is right. It’s always the wrong time so just use your intuition and stick to it
6:51 not well put but I know what you mean ;) it’s hard to describe where we go when we’re into their music
9:14 keep it up. You guys are so charitable to each other
    10:27 love it
    10:59 love it
13:13 imo this is the toughest TOOL song to first listen follow. Y’all are doing great!
13:33 this might be a time to pause it? Just a thought. If you get sensory overload, pause it and process it with us
    13:42 wow- proud of you
14:29 the sonic experience is almost 1/2 of their value because it’s done with the level and taste of the band members. So audio engineering on this level is par with the talent (unbelievably so). But the way they formulate music from my understanding is:
The trio: Justin (bass) Danny (drums) Adam (guitar) start with a limerick or sound they have found and use that as a foundation to build a song out of that. It could be any of the players. One of them shows what they’ve been working on, then they start to “talk” to each other. They build the song. Maynard then comes in with the final product, and arranges the album structure, and of course his vocals

TθθL can be classified as progressive metal, but I believe future musicologists will also study their music as its own genre-much as professors of film studies regard Tarantino or Anderson as a post-modernist BUT ALSO so extraordinarily specific within this classification as to be a pinnacle.

I love watching the struggle. I felt it myself. Fear Innoculum is a challenging album to digest. Older Tool fans had 5 albums and decades to help prepare. Comparing a Tool "song" to songs from other bands isn't the best approach, in my opinion. I try to visualize an opera, different movements within the song. And the singer is weaving a tale with ups and downs. Triumph and tragedy. Kind of like listening to a teacher during reading circle time. Sometimes you have to close your eyes and let go.
    The Grudge.

Tool is a spiritual journey. Every song is an experience. The lyrics are very profound, but his voice is used as an instrument for many songs. I do recommend listening with the lyrics pulled up though, because there is so much meaning behind every single word.

And the fact that you said it might make you feel stupid, possibly for lack of better words in English, is not true. Making you feel small and overwhelmed may be true. Those words are a testament to how much you feel this. I felt all the same things when I first heard this and I’ve been listening to them for decades. That’s the point. Let’s be bewildered together ✌️

Yup, usually either Justin on bass or Danny on drums lay the original parts, then the other two musicians complete the sound then Maynard finishes it with his vocals and gives it meaning.

Yes Andre...you need to know when to stop! LOL...with Tool, it's SO very easy to get lost in the music (and the lyrics)...I find myself like Dominika - it's hard to articulate words and description after hearing their songs!! It's like the music is trying to reprogram my brain to something more complex and intricate. I find the same experience with Rush (especially!) and to some extent, Pink Floyd.
I love it when you try to put your emotions into words however! Keep it up! Cheers.

I've listened to TOOL since 1993. I've seen them live 11 times and literally listen to them every single day. Not constantly, but at least once a day. For over 2 decades TOOL did not have a single note, let alone entire song that I did not enjoy.
I say all that to serve as a preface for the following: Descending gets on my god damn nerves with all the, "djent djent... Ok song's ending.... Psych! Just kidding, djent djent djent djent." It gets on my fuckin nerves and it literally causes me physical pain to see myself typing that sentiment here today, but I can't shake it. This song gets on my fuckin nerves

Love your reactions! The lead singer and front man Maynard James Keenan writes most of the lyrics to their songs. He also is a record producer and wine maker. He is astute businessman that owns wine vineyards in Arizona. And believe it or not sometimes wears a business suite! The song is about a fallen state of humanity. It is saying that modern society is shallow, vain and for the most part meaningless.

It is the second half of Ænema. No one took the message seriously last time... Maybe they will this time.
But I doubt it. Descending ends with a crescendo meaning it is that 'global warming-rising sea levels-Coastal living disasters... mom please flush it all away' catastrophe wreaking havok upon the steadfast. Unleashing the power mother nature has upon the insubordinate.
