New York City is arguably the largest and most diverse cultural melting pot on the planet. The cuisines of over 100 countries around the world are represented in its restaurants. So when I got the opportunity to go on a food tour of the Little Guyana neighborhood, I jumped at the chance! Come with me as I go on a Guyanese food tour of Little Guyana in Queens, NYC!
Our journey began on Liberty Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard. Liberty Avenue is the mecca for Indo-Caribbean cuisine in New York. Shiva is Trinidadian and took me to have the ultimate Trinidadian breakfast at Tropical Jade 3.

I could see shrimp, goat, duck, rotis, and more there. It’s a diner-style restaurant with a long buffet where they serve you. We ordered the doubles (thin, stuffed flatbreads), roti, buss-up shot, dal puri, bake & saltfish (fried pastry stuffed with salt fish), curry shrimp, and stew pork.
My Sorrel soda tasted a little like cranberries and Shiva’s banana soda tasted exactly like bananas! First, we jumped on the doubles, which were doughy and contain chickpeas and chutneys. They were very spicy! I loved them with the spicy hot sauce!
Next was the baked & saltfish. It contained bacalao, or codfish and was a little fluffier and had more texture than the bread in the doubles. The spicy sauce took it to another level! The stew pork was chunky, fall-apart tender, and went great with the roti.
The large roti with the curry shrimp was excellent and was more of a light, stew-like curry. I also liked the potatoes in the dal puri. But the curry shrimp gravy was out of this world!
Back outside were displays of fruit and vegetables outside a supermarket. We walked past nail salons, sari shops, Pooja shops, fruit vendors, and more shops selling cultural items. I could hear Hindi music coming from a lot of them. We stopped inside a sari shop called Henna Fashion Inc. Everything there was beautiful!
From there, we continued on an stopped at a coconut vendor outside. He cut the top off so I could drink the water inside. It was super refreshing! Then, he cut it open so we could eat the cool, filling meat inside! It took me right back to Asia!
At Anita’s Fashion Pooja Center, we saw statues of Hindu gods as well as Indian bridal gowns and other clothing. Then, on 123rd and Liberty, we headed to Avenue BBQ Hut. In the kitchen, they made us some BBQ lamb and BBQ chicken platters with barbecue sauce and garlic sauce over a bed of fries.
The BBQ lamb was delicious and high-quality. I loved the barbecue sauce and the fries underneath. It was my first time having barbecued lamb and it blew my mind! I couldn’t get enough of it!
We followed that with some sparkling apple juice and then jumped on the chicken. It fell right off the bone. One of my favorite Caribbean chicken dishes ever!
Then, we headed past bakeries, shops, and more to Fiwi Foods, a food truck on 124th and Liberty selling jerk chicken, jerk pork, oxtails, curry goat, and more. But we were heading to Little Guyana Bake Shop. Shiva even gave me a Backyard Republik gift bag!
We made a quick stop inside Singh’s Roti Shop & Bar, a famous roti shop with a huge menu. Everything looked amazing! We tried a crisp Carib lager and quickly checked out Sybil’s Bakery & Restaurant.
At Nest Restaurant, we got che chi kai chicken, two types of wontons, fried chicken with rice, and more. The che chi kai chicken was light and crispy, and the jerk chicken wontons were great. I also loved the Chinese chicken fried rice. The blueberry & cream cheese wontons were so unique!

Love the video, but the West Indies are called that because Europeans wanted to differentiate it from the East Indies (because I guess all the places they colonized were "Indies" to them). Actual Indians from India didn't start arriving to the West Indies until the early 1800s, long after it was named that.
Late 1800. France was the first to abolish slavery, thans to the Haitians. Spain then England followed. France recaptured Haiti later on and eventually freed her in the early 1900's.
I remember walking around little guyana feeling like I was in a different country! Loved it!!

Great to see my trini food heritage showcased. Although I didn't understand why it was just showcased as indian food culture. We are a happy blend of Indian, African and Amerindian.

Liberty Ave aka Little Guyana is an homage to the entire West Indian community. We are so grateful for the privilege of having that community available to us. We are able to get all of our respective cultural ingredients, "home style" foods and Caribbean supplies. Our food and culture is a testament to the amazing diversity of the Caribbean. This was a wonderful showcase of West Indian culture but the guide was mistaken in his explanation of the differences between West Indian and East Indian….these terms are derivatives of the colonial period West Indies and East Indies when India and Pakistan, and parts of the Caribbean were colonies of the British Empire. Two trading companies were established to manage the colonies The West Indian Trading Company and the East Indian Trading Companies. The territories over times were referred to as the West Indies and East Indies….the term West Indian was originally assigned to the native aboriginal people of the Caribbean and South America that lived in the British colonies, but overtime came to refer to anyone of any racial or ethnic background that was born in the West Indies not only the descendants of indentured laborers.

Thank you. Columbus was searching for a route to go east and ended up west in the Caribbean so he called the indigenous people "west Indians"

Just want to point out that the term West Indian has nothing to do with Indians in Caribbean.
For some bizarre reason the younger generation of black folks think so.
Everyone before knew that it mean everyone according to who immigrated there because of the the term British West Indies.
Indians know that it doesn't mean just them, but strangely younger black people think that's what it means and they are offended by the term.
First of all he never called they are West Indies by root. He said his ancestors came to caribbean from India as indenture labour and finally they established in caribbean and didn't return.
By the way there was no such term or country named as Pakistan by that time when people from India reached at Caribbean. Correct it if you don't know at all.
We Indian know Columbus expedition to India by travelling west to east to reach in India. He thought world is round , so he needs to travel towards west to reach east in India. By travelling west from Spain the land he reached he called as this is India. That's how the America and caribbean called as west India or the native people there called by European as Indian. This is how it got the name West Indies.
The legend of how "doubles" got that name is this: it's originally a street food brought over by Indian indentured labourers and was originally called "bara" (the fried dough shells) consisting of only one bara and topped with channa (chickpeas). Then one day a buyer at a popular seller asked for a "double" or two baras with the channa instead of one. This caught on and eventually everyone was asking for a "double" and the dish eventually became referred to to as "doubles". Many different sauces and chutneys (condiments/salsas) have been added over time from tamarind, mango, cucumber, coconut, pommecythere (juneplum/golden apple/ambarella), moolai (white radish), chilis etc. It's traditionally sold from a box attached to the front cart of a bicycle.

David. Thank you repping Little Guyana. As a Guyanese, I am a little disappointed that you went to only Trinidadian restaurants with a Trinidadian tour guide. You need to check out some of the Guyanese restaurants in Little Guyana 🇬🇾 🇬🇾.

Tropical Jade and Singhs are both Trinidadian, not Guyanese
Guyanese food is very limited and the curry is not very good. Their Chinese food is good though. But Trinis have more of a variety when it comes to food.
Finally you made your way to some west Indian food 😋 1 of the best foods ever!!
The part in which David’s companion mentions about the combination involving coconut flesh with brown sugar reminded me of my childhood days; the heavenly combination we used to wait for while growing up back in Kerala(Southern India).

West Indian is ANYBODY from the West Indies/Caribbean, not just people descended from South Asia. People of African descent and other races in the Caribbean are also West Indian
It’s called West Indies because Columbus thought he landed in India. That’s where the name comes from. It’s was called West Indies before the British imported Chinese and Indians to fill the gap after they freed the slaves and they need cheap labor. It’s kinda a slap in the face how he intentionally cut Afro West Indians out of the picture.
Oh he knew.. all of us both Indian and African trinis are called west Indians . If he goes to India they won't accept him as an Indian. Its the same as a trini African won't be accepted as African in Africa. But some how trini Indians in trinidad always think they better than the trini africans .. the black race is the most hated and envied race .. every race thinks they are superior to them doesn't matter which country they live in .. And that's why he left out the afo trinis .

This is the indo Caribbean population, the British brought Indians from India to Trinidad , Guyana, Suriname , Mauritius, Jamaica and Belize . Btw trinidad and Guyana have the most Indians in the Caribbean Bc the British brought more Indians to those two countries

So glad you toured Little Guyana/Liberty Ave. Your guide was not doing justice to the explanation of foods. I think you understood the cuisine better than he did and were able to express the flavors, textures and even ingredients. I wish i was there to showcase it better haha. Oh boy David-that part about West Indian history is incorrect. He is Indo-caribbean and everyone from the West Indies are West Indian-not only the East Indian descendants. He should know that. Food looks great though.

Singh's is my go to for home cooked Trinidadian food when in NYC! Great representation Dave! This true Trinidadian restaurant has a great representation of the dominant cultural cuisines offered on the island such as Indo, Creole and Chinese. It is that combination of cuisines that makes Trinidad unique. Most importantly is the "homestyle" ambiance at Singh's that people from all walks of life go there for; whether you just finished a 12 hr shift at JFK or you are a visiting professor yearning for something heartwarming and belly-filling and a "Trini lime" (social gathering). At any "lime" in Trinidad you will usually find gastronomic representation from all the cultures and peoples from all socio economic levels and that's what makes us equal at the table! Keep up the good work and PLEASE visit Trinidad soon, I am sure being from South Florida you have Trinidadian friends, if not the fans on here will hook you up ;-)

Indo Fijian checking in, how is it that both of our cuisines are better than mainland indian cuisine? I live in Australia and the mainland indian restaurants here dont even have chilies if you ask for them, super bland food with hardly any spice. Love to visit my bros and sisters in the West Indies one day.
You definitely have the right guide with you David. Uncle Shiva knows all the good spots and the fact that he started you off with Doubles and Trini food, made it even better! We have to get you to Trinidad & Tobago to try some more of our food.

doubles orginally made more or less w/ split pea and flour and the bread is fried, some places now use little or no split pea in the bread thats why its more white not yellow.. Originally called a Channa Bara. with one peice of bread and the "double" came about as a matter of more bread to eat the rest of the channa /chick peas or like a "taco". Salfish and bake is great !
Ughhh I miss the food from queens right now. My Sybil’s and Little Guyana Bake shop are my favorites. Thank you for educating people that Guyana is not the same as Ghana.

West Indies, called so because indians went there and settled?
Columbus started his voyage in search of India. He lost direction and reached carribbean island and assumed he is in india. So when he met the native people, he called them indians ( native peoples of America are still called indians)
Only later he realised, he is in the Western part of the world, but the name stuck. And the real india became East India ( That's how the British East India company and Dutch India came in to existanc.
Later British took people from India to the carribbean islands as labourers, who kept their culture alive there.
So, Indians in the term West Indies refers to the native indigenous people, say for example Caribe, not the other way.

The Indian/native people contribute pepper pot, cassava bread etc, the African contribute Stew pots n ground vegetable, the European contribute saltfish, pies, soup n bread, the East Indian contribute Curries n roti and the Chinese with fried rice n chowmein. A several generation down the road all these food changes over time n nothing like where it originates from, My point is that all these race from different land contribute to what we people of the Caribbean call West Indian food. And yes we call our self West Indian because we was born on those Islands not 1 or 2 generation ago but several generations
