Welcome back to that galaxy so far far away where we'll take an extensive look back at the Star Wars: Jedi Knight series. Discover the secrets behind the development of these beloved games and relive the epic adventures of multiple fan favorite characters. From FPS roots to a third person action game franchise, we'll be looking at everything having to do with the Jedi Knight video games.
#starwars #jediknight #retrospectives Игры
Mark Hamill was working in the Wing Commander series. To this day, I can’t understand why he wasn’t invited to portray Luke in a 90s LucasArts game.
He was too busy voicing the Joker
@@DLYoung-bu5uiAnd Wolverine.
He had his own interests. WTF's not to understand???
He was too busy blowing Joe Biden and supporting Nazis
But we were given Bob Bergen in Mark’s absence and that’s an absolute win.
These retrospectives are the only ones that make me feel like I'm replaying the games.
That was what I set out to do I'm glad it's working!
I love how in the older media they don’t use the word “Sith”. Even in the Thrawn Trilogy Palps and Vader were referred as “Dark Jedi.”
Well they didn’t really know what a “Sith” was. Only that Vader was their Lord. Timothy Zahn allegedly wanted to name the Noghri the “Sith,” until Lucas stepped in shooting that and a number of other ideas down.
The addition of SWTOR and KOTOR soundtracks is very much a tasteful touch. Timeless tracks 😮💨
I love to begin my morning with a hearty bowl of Jan - Kyle Katarn as Michael Scott
Thought I had found a years old review from the golden era of RUclips… and then I saw it was released a few days ago.
I’m still on the dark forces 2 portion but I love what you are doing here and what a video to discover your channel with.
I don't know if you'll see this, but I just want to say, you're probably the best person for Star Wars lore videos that I've found, and that's not even the main FOCUS of these videos.
I'm a Star Wars nerd myself, I've played these games, read these books, etc... but your way of relaying all the complex information and backstory is just so casual and easy to listen to, that I find myself constantly coming back and rewatching these videos not just for the video-game analysis and critiquing, but also just for the lore sections.
I genuinely hope you keep up with these Star Wars game videos, if only for that reason. Seeing you cover things like the 'KOTOR' duology, the 'X-Wing' and 'TIE Fighter' flight-sim games, or even the RTSes like 'Galactic Battlegrounds' and 'Empire At War' would be a treat PURELY to get the lore breakdown on them.
Thank you SO much! I'll tell you now that my KOTOR 1 script is taking quite a while for exactly that reason. Stick around!
@@evprince Glad to hear it, take your time!
"They seem pretty harmless, better to just keep your distance and kill them to be safe."
- Jedi Knight
A discussion of Jedi academy cannot be complete without a discussion of the multiplayer. Objective based lobbies was awesome. Around the same time C&C renegade was popular. Spent so many hours. Either you went Jedi Knight with force powers, or bounty hunter to overtake objectives.
It was really a predecessor to star wars battlefront. Some intense matches at hoth and mos eisley
Love that this guy has read the EU, I got excited when I saw Bakura and completely forgot about the Yuuzhan Vong genociding the planet from the second act of the game in the novels. Thanks for this retrospective, took me back to my younger days. And yes, I too used force grip to cheese the heck out of enemies except I preferred to fight most of the dark Jodi due to loving the lightsaber combat in this game.
This is the move for me today.
same, now THIS makes for a better, SUPER long video about Star Wars than a long-ass rant about The Last Jedi from a brony that's a complete jackass to people for liking the movie
Thank you for making one long video of these games. Loved watching your retrospectives and tended to watch them back to back, this will make that much easier. Keep it up great content my man
My pleasure!
Such a huge project, thanks for making this vid! DF/JK is one of my fav series of games, ever.
Man, you aughta keep this shit up, son. There's absolutely no GODDAMN way you don't see further success if you keep putting out passionate and wonderful works like this one.
No goddamn way. What a fucking beautiful video.
I absolutely loved this series, I love the supercut. THANK YOU!!!
A welcome tribute to a fantastic series.
Kyle sparing Yun I think had more to do with the fact that yes he's killed A LOT of people, but he's a soldier, not a murderer.
As for the facilities on the Valley of the Jedi Planet: In my headcannon: Kyle's dad was a well funded archeologist and much of the structures were left behind from his original excavation and Jerec's men just built upon it.
This is a good theory.
Hello Evan and thank you for the video.
I want to add that Kyle Katarn does also appear as a hero unit of the Rebel Alliance faction in the RTS Game Empire at War. However he is of course not a Jedi then but merely the mercanery as which he stars in the original Dark Forces game. His abilitys are sprinting and throwing a thermal detonator. :D
Cya around, Evan.
That 3 level demo disk of mysteries of the sith was one of the only games I had as a kid, I still have those levels memorized. I couldn’t tell you how many hours were spent trying to find a way to fly the tie fighters on the asteroid
Me too! Almost have that level down to muscle memory at this point.
Jedi Aacademy is my favorite star wars game ever, tied with 2005 Battlefront 2. I've played it so many times as a kid and adult, along with mods for it. A new game in that style would not go amiss, the lightsaber combat is peak (though I never liked how JKA invalidates guns)
It's also the reason I think Kel Dor are such a cool species. It's neat they sprinkled in Prequel stuff here and there but kept the game true to its place on the timeline. All that really feels like an overt reference is the generator shaft duel map, while newer games usually try to push more in.
Perfect timing for my day off!
Perfect timing for my day not off! 😂
A week late but I too found this on my day off, needless to say I haven't got crap done around the house 😆
I saw this video at 2:19am and WILL have to come back. Gid bless your soul
Hope to see you back!
Some of my favorite gaming memories come from the level design in DF2: Jedi Knight. The sweet spot of the journey to Kyle's home and getting the lightsaber, over canyons and through sewars until you finally get to that enormous fortress of Barron's Head with the huge tower in the center. Then fighting through stormtroopers and AT-STs until you get in the tower, going up the enormous elevator...and meeting 8T-88 and having your first fight with a dark jedi. Even though there were still chapter breaks, that section felt like one singular journey through a massive continuous space, and it was awesome at the time.
Every level that followed is worthy of its own rant-y paragraph too. And the game gets surprisingly moody when you get to the valley of the jedi. The remixes of John Williams music in this became some of my favorite SW music.
And Mysteries of the Sith? It has this tone that I don't think I've ever felt in a game since. The urgency of those first few levels with Kyle, then the darker grungier stuff when you're Mara dealing with organized crime and holocrons. Then the last few levels on Dromund Kaas that were crazy difficult and genuinely scary.
I played the absolute shit out of Jedi Knight as a kid. Huge impact on me growing up and I still consider it a favorite. I also had a HUGE crush on Jan Ors lol
Good taste
Awesome retrospective. Born in 1990 i was a Star wars child essentially. My parents exposed me to it from early stage and star wars videos games are still my go to "escapism". I've played all these games except the very first one and I'm inclined to get the Dark Froces remake.
I'd say do it! Very good time.
Jedi Academy lives on. Movie Battles 2 mod still going pretty strong, 20th anniversary this year lol.
Brilliant vid!
Amazing content
Wow amazing work!! Thank you so much for all your videos ❤️
Glad to have you! Some more fun content on the way soon!
Thank you so much for this video! It brings me a lot of good old memories. As a matter of fact, Lucasarts was one of the best videogame companies, if not the best, thanks Disney for buying this franchise and destroying this amazing company!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You've done such a swell job covering one of my favorite video game series and characters. Bravo. Happy May the 4th!
May the 4th be with you and all that.
YOOOOOOOOOOO HOLY SHIT LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
Amazing. If I start this at the beginning of my working day, it will still be running by the time I finish.
Might have to save it for a day I work from home rather than go into the office…
Currently at Jedi Outcast and still blastin
Your the first RUclipsr where I’m like “I’m a fan of them not the the thing they are talking about” stay strong brother!
Hey I'll take it!
*You're
FANTASTIC video. Really enjoying this (keep having to go back as I fall asleep, but wonderfully I hope it ends up getting more views as a result) 😊
I hope so too!
never been much of a star wars fan more of a trek fan enjoyed the og trilogy but this eu story sounds so cool and all the eu lore videos ive watched sound cool
Anybody who thinks the first game was just a doom clone has a brain so smooth that they probably enjoyed the sequel trilogy without any question
I really loved that IMuse sound system. It really brought a cinematic music to the games
There's something satisfyingly nostalgic about the ole' MS-DOS music.
A solid rapport
Thanks
The best missions ever created, does not mean the most fun missions ever created.
Why i believe they are the best, is that it gives you a true feeling of what the Sith go trough.
Hate, Anger, Frustration and more. From the Sith liches to the creates it gives a feeling of dread.
The labyrinth architecture with it's grand halls and abysses just fits the style of the ancient Sith.
While i was there, i had a feeling that the only way out is forward, and better quick before something happens.
This is why i also believe the 3 final missions are one of the best in gaming history. Even they are not the most fun ones.
Can't argue there. Those missions certainly brought out hate, anger, frustration, and the urge to turn off the game lmfao.
I like the phrase "Kyle Katarn it" gonna start using it with my star wars friends. Might use it as a technical term in a campaign some time.
Oh the nostalgia the music gives me wolfenstein vibes at times .
There was a pretty big multiplayer community back when this came out. It was on the MSN Gaming Zone. We had a bunch of different guilds and made secret guild specific maps.
I would love to see you cover the Kotor games in the future. The presentation and style of these retrospectives is amazing. Some of the best on RUclips. Hoping you get more subs. Much love brother
Working on early drafts of the KOTOR script now actually.
@@evprince can’t wait for that video 🫡
@@evprince oooh are you going to talk about Star Wars The Old Republic too? it's free to play on Steam in case you want to check it out for the video
@andrewclark3330 I would love to do a full video on that but it'll be a while before I can touch that beast of a game.
@@evprince yeah it's the same for me too. i have it on my game library on Steam alongside SCP Containment Breach Remastered, Counterside, OG Runescape among other things, but i haven't fully comitted to playing it yet
my Hero Of Tython is a Republic Trooper
Outcast is my fan favorite!
They recently released a graphically updated version of Dark Forces on Steam (kind of expensive at $20-30 when compared to the original, but they did a great job). Im hoping the do the same with JK/MotS.
Happy May the 4th to you
Even prince
Fun fact. The voice actor for Kyle Katarn in mysteries of the sith, is the same VA that was ensign Munro in star trek elite force. Cool he did both franchies
I loved the old universe. It was so grimy, it really felt like an extension of the movies. I think Shadows of the empire was my favourite, but I remember my dad playing dark forces 2 on windows 95 🥲 the good old days
I don’t begrudge Disney at all, but I’d like them to strip the shine off and revisit around the time of the OG, and make it feel like that era
ironically 3 days after this video released MOTS Remastered 3.0 released and brought it on par with DF2 Remastered, including the ease of installation and setup
Saw that yeah! General Tantor is doing awesome work.
5:23:41 Slight correction here. The opening crawl does mention that Jaden is on his way to the academy after building himself a lightsaber with no previous knowledge as per the final paragraph:
"JADEN KORR, a promising student from Coruscant, is en route to the Academy after achieving the impossible: creating a lightsaber without any formal training..."
So it does mention WHY he has a lightsaber but you're right that the game never brings it up again or delves any further into it. I could have also just misunderstood what you were saying and if so I apologize. Anyway, great video as always. Keep up the good work!
4:35:35 Does this point apply to Jedi Knight 1 as well?
To a degree. The only genuinely trained jedi in that game are Maw, who was cut in half, and Jerec, who was very old at that point. Boc and the others were only trained to a small degree by Jerec, likely to prevent their killing him, so they would have probably been about an equal challenge to Kyle taking into account his combat experience.
I'm hoping Dark Forces II and Mysteries of the Sith get ports to modern consoles like the others have.
5:4919 Still till do this day wish that we could’ve gone to wayland instead of Hoth. It would’ve been a better place to run into Alora. I understand that Wayland would’ve been far too dangerous for Jaden and by this time Corran Horn was a much more seasoned Jedi. Also gosh I wish we had got a scene on Corran instead of just two name drops.
1:42:58
I don't remember that as a kid. And almost every playthrough I've seen uploaded doesn't show this part. So last night playing to original version on steam I came to this part and was like "WTF!?!?!?" I died a few times until I hopped on the ledge above the door it exited threw some thermals at it the force speed bobbing and weaving and slashing until I killed it. Funny to see that in a game I have fond memories about but never discovering that part.
I remember seeing a combo pack of Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 on pc when I was a kid. Had Vader on the cover. It cane with the game and Mystery of the Sith. Watched my bad mow through alien mercenaries and Storm troopers while fighting Jerec's Cult of Dark Jedi. And this was my introduction to Katarn. Then when Jedi Outcast came out, I was in 3rd or 4th grade and saw my dad returning into the world of Kyle Katarn. I played both but as a little kid or young adult i used cheats. However I did play Jedi Academy without cheats (Mostly) but still.
So it pissed me off that the Shitty sequel trilogy didn't include Luke's rebuilt Jedi temple and no Kyle Katarn. These are cannon in my mind and are the true sequels to return of the jedi, so suck it Disney.
In reference to your opining on Mara Jade, It sucks that she isn't married to Luke in true Star Wars Canon. I've been a pretty serious fan since before the prequels to the point where I was always on the lookout for Zahn when I was passing through his town. The thing is, Lucas is The absolute final authority on Star Wars. That means that Greedo said Maclunky right before he shot first. I don't always like Lucas's choices, but he is, in threepio's own words, "The Maker" and his word is authoritative.
Maclunky
This was the series that got me into PC gaming, and to this day I put Jedi Outcast over just about any other Star Wars video game. Sorry KOTOR guys, but even above that.
A respectable opinion tbh.
Jedi Outcast is THE Star Wars game
Scrub… i have the four disk Kotor set and the 2 disk Jedi Knight set. Kotor was literally on national news when it came out. Without Kotor games like mass effect do not exist.
What did jedi knight change?
Exactly
@@ericgrimes341 mass effect is ass though...
It ain't about legacy. It's about which game was an end to end fun star wars experience. KOTOR is good, but it isn't the running and gunning, action packed high adventure that Jedi Outcast was. Massive lore and story doesn't beat accessible gameplay and controls.
@@AllStarJD how old are you? Lol
MORGAN KATARN!
Kyle also appears in Empire at War.
The Jedi knight series >>>> Disney Sequel
Not a fan of star wars, in fact i dont understand its appealand I've never played jedi knight. However im gonna listen to this video at work anyway because im curious to know about it more and maybe giving it a chance in the future.
And because i love video essays.
Hopefully you found something interesting in there.
Too bad you couldn't find the sniper rifle. It was super fun, and disappointing once you got to the point where it didn't work anymore.
Id suggest your next video being either deadspace 2, MDK or any other classic tier game
How about killzone
Kyle who now? I'm here for my boy Jaden.
Grear video. I'm a quarter of the way through and just finished the Dark Forces II section. Will you do a retrospective of Kotor 1 & 2?
Working on KOTOR 1 right now.
@@evprince Okay great. 👍 No rush.
5:07:18
Let me make clear that if I've done nothing but kick your ass, I'm not inclined to give ground.
Facts
I grew up playing Jedi: Outcast! Actually, that was the only Kyle Katarn game I have played. If there was a port for Dark Forces 2 I would consider playing it on console. I do not have a PC unfortunately.
Definitely recommend Jedi Academy. gameplays about the same as Outcast
Funny there was a Bug on the Xbox Version of the game if you once Complet the game then load in one of the levels of the last 30% quit to main menu restart the Game . know you can choose of all three light saber versions plus having maxed out Force powers in all levels
5:27:03 time stamp for later
ALGORITHM!
Tbh even though Light side Jedi Academy ending is canon, I resonate more with the Dark side ending.
One leads into books.
The other leads to the death of Rosh, and a setup for a climactic battle between Kyle Katarn and his star student, a fallen Jedi. It's like poetry. It RIMES.
EDIT: Kyle even approaches Jaden with his weapon put away, because.... It worked on him... 🥺
i know i am nitpicking but how does a yellow lightsaber emit orange glow xD Also kyles saber is first green then YELLOW from yun and for some reason its orange in MoTS.... and now blue in outcast
The blue is the one he built himself. All the others were inherited or taken from others
Pro tip for all the assassin droids, droid walkers, and turrets and anything electrical in Outcast or Academy: DEMP 2 and lightning 😏 no thanks needed
Dam your demo disc had 3 levels, my demo cd only had the first level of mysteries of the sith
Which one?
But in the audio drama and the novelisation of A New Hope, the stole of the DeadStar plans is made by a commando on Toprawa
Soooo there's a Knights of the Old Republic retrospective in the works? 😁
There is indeed
What’s that opening song? It slaps
Is this just an inter-cut of his previous work? Because I've watched those.
I thought this seemed familiar 😅
Woop woop woop woop woop!
Oh, and of course, HATE DISNEY!
Yes, it's a compilation video with an additional section at the end.
@@evprince Alrighty! Thanks! Hey take a look at Rogue Squadron 2 & 3, Racer 2, and Force Commander will ya?
5:30:42 Kyle 😂
I couldn't find the version of Battle of Heroes from the intro :(
I made it lmao
The Kyle Katarn Saga
WOAH!!! At 04:30:20 what the hell was that disrespect??? Absolutely malicious.
Holy fuck love long form content can't wait to devour your library
Hope you love it and stick around! So much more content to come.
I don't mean to be that guy but you can easily kill the hazard troopers with rocket launchers and the concussion rifle respectively
Wasn't Dark Forces was already in development before doom?
Sedriss was killed by Jedi Master Ood Bnar.
Can they port Jedi knight dark forces 2 to modern consoles?
They CAN but I'm not sure they will.
Nightdive will probably do that next
In Dark Forces 2, isn't there an easier way to become darkseid oriented just by killing Weegie?
The mystery of the Sith bespin level had Vader in it, I don't know if that is a different version thing or what I've seen the RUclips video with Vader
i hate the disney stuff also, everything except the disney stuff is canon
Disney figured if they bought the copyright, that's as good as buying the idea of Star Wars.
They're mistaken. They can make movies, books, and TV shows dressed up like Star Wars and even hire the original actors to reprise their roles. It's all still just a masquerade.
They do the same thing with Grimm fairytales, mistaking themselves for the "owner" of Cinderella or Aladdin. They are not.
They own their adaptations of those stories. They don't "own" Aladdin. They don't "own" the Little Mermaid.
And they do not "own" Star Wars.
Edit: They own "Rey", how 'bout that?
3:14:14 Dude... why..?
Gonk
@@evprince Understandable. Nevermind.
The EU was the shiiiit.
I for one have not watched any starwars since the atrocity of the last jedi. All the characters assassinations in 2 movies. This ain't it.
(This, being the disney crap)
Note to Self: Regardeding the dark Jedi twins - look up the chaotic overworlders who bare a similar make and model
Kotor2 Kreia smoking cope: Sith lords of the past will make future Force-users look like children.
In the future: chad legends new jedi order;🗿
If Disney was smart, they'd remake these games with modern graphics, but the same gameplay/story, AND make live action movies/series for them.
But Disney is stupid AF, so this'll never happen, sadly.
You know, it really makes it difficult for me to dive in and fully enjoy this video when you're taking sides in the bullshit toxic fan in-fighting right out of the gate like that. I love the Legends timeline. But I love the canon stuff too. There's room for it all, and repeating the "Disney Star Wars is trash!" mantra is needlessly off-putting to fans like myself who don't want to associate with the fandom menace.
These are great. A way better way to spend 8 hours with Star Wars than the Kathleen Kennedy self insert fan fiction trilogy. One question, have you ever considered doing intensive retrospectives instead of extensive retrospectives?
I know that nearly everything he's done has been Relegated to Legends.. BUT GOD DAMNIT BRING KYLE KATARN AND MARA JADE BACK INTO CANON. SOMEHOW.
Disney had their chance.
They lacked confidence.
Fumbled the pass.
Botched the execution.
And continue to write their chapter in the canon.
We'll see what happens next, as Star Wars lingers on, "Weekend at Bernie's" status.
