Ulf Hoelscher's performance here is nothing short of breathtaking. The violin tone is beautiful throughout : technical virtuosity and deeply-felt emotional expression are combined seemingly with ease. The orchestral setting is one of those which is so immaculately written, ranging from powerfully vigorous to tenderly romantic, that you'd think Saint-Saens composed it effortlessly. Stunning upload........
I've never understood why a lot of composers who wrote multiple concertos for an instrument only tend to have one of them played; Bruch #1 (but not #2); Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1 (but not 2); Saint-Saens Cellos Concerto #1 (but not #2). Shostakovich Violin and Cello Concertos #1 (but not #2). And this one (vice #1 and sort of #1, which is charming but short). I often like the "other" ones better than the popular ones. Usually have good tunes even if they're not as memorable.
