French army in 1940: What Nolan's "Dunkirk" did not show you

  • Commenting the release of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" movie, British historian Max Hastings said that 'The French will have to make their own film if they want their national story properly told.' I am ok with that, although I believe allied people should not feel annoyed to recognize the contribution of each others. "Dunkirk" movie is terribly historically inaccurate and unfortunately, I know many people will still take it for historical stuff although Nolan did not claim so.
Here are some actual footages of the French Army fighting in France in June 1940 (Fall Rot), after the evacuation of Dunkirk. And also combats in Norway in May 1940. Truth must be told and shown about the actual contribution of French military and Free French Forces/French Resistance in WW2, and we shall not accept that our grand-fathers be forgotten or grossly ignored. My statement is also made for WW1 after the ignominious "Battlefield 1" video game where the French Army was given a secondary DLC version despite its massive and decisive role in Allied victory in 1918.

    .
My grandfather was taken prisoner at dunkirk.
A few quotes about the behavior of the french army at Dunkerque or Lille:
General Georg von Küchler, commander of the XVIIIth army of the Wehrmacht, entirely engaged around Dunkirk, this is taken from his war diary:
"Despite our overwhelming superiority in men and hardware numbers, the french troops are counter-attacking in several places. I can't understand how those soldiers, sometimes fighting at one versus ten (or even one versus thirty in some areas), can find enough strength to assault us: this is simply amazing ! I see in those french soldiers the same energy than with the veterans of Verdun in 1916. For several days now, hundreds of bombers and guns are pounding the french defence. But, it's always the same thing: our infantry and panzers can't break through, despite some local and ephemeral successes. The french high command has very smartly set up his troops and artillery. I fear that the Dunkirk operation could be a failure for all of us: almost all the BEC and the biggest part of the french 1st Army will escape, because a few thousands of braves block the path to the sea. That's distressing, but that's it !
Dunkirk brings the proof that the french soldier is one of the best in the world. The french artillery, already dreaded in 1914, demonstrates once more its efficiency. Our losses are terrifying: numerous battallions have lost 60% of their men, sometimes even more !
By resisting ten days or more to our much bigger forces, the french army has accomplished, in Dunkirk, a superb achievement that you must pay tribute to.
They have certainly saved Great-Britain from the defeat, by allowing the british professional army to reach the british coast."
General Franz Halder's diary, one of the chief of staff of the Wehrmacht:
"May 18th 1940: the Führer still worries a lot about the southern flank. he's furious and claims that we take the best path to make the whole campaign fail ! The french troops never stops counter-attacking.
May 21st 1940: that day starts in an extremely tense atmosphere: reports indicates a serious pressure on the northern flank of the IVth army. The VIth army faces a solid front.
May 22nd 1940: our tanks, that are currently fighting in the south, have met a powerful enemy. Our panzerdivisionen suffer too many losses and attack without being required to. Stress is growing.
May 23rd 1940: the losses for the tanks of our ten panzerdivisionen reach 50% ! The french resistance is fierce."
Winston Churchill in his War Speeches, talking about the french resistance at Lille:
"Those frenchs, under the brave command of general Molinié, have during four critical days contained not less than seven german divisions that, otherwise, would have participated to the attacks of the Dunkirk perimeter. Thoses troops thus brought a splendid contribution to the safety of their luckier comrades and of the BEC."

Nolan's Dunkirk move was hyped beyond belief. He played fast and loose with the truth and with historical accuracy in depicting the battle. It reinforced so much of the myth & propaganda that has obscured the truth for the past 70+ years. It also lacked significant historical context that would've helped modern audiences understand just why the war reached that point and its significance.

The French army certainly fought very determinedly and bravely at the start of the German invasion, and their contribution is criminally understated (particularly in the Anglosphere). As you will know, the French army held around 70% of the perimeter in Dunkirk.
That being said, once the back of the French army was broken, morale dropped, and it is a matter of record that large numbers gave up the fight very easily. Who can blame them if all is lost and everything looks very desperate.
The British losses that you cite are for the Dunkirk evacuation only. British losses for the Battle of France were 68'000, of those it's generally accepted that a third would be killed. Even if we take a quarter, that's still 17'000 dead.
You forget also that the British army - though a professional force - was heavily reliant upon the professional French Army until it could build itself up. There were around 250'000 British troops in France and Belgium, circa 75% of her army. Britain's land contribution was small, but she couldn't afford to lose the little she had.
If the roles had been reversed, I suspect the French would have done exactly the same and retreated. No-one can afford to lose the bulk of a professional army once a battle is lost.

Anyone who has studied this period of history should be wary of attaching blame to any of the allies - British or French. The remarkable evacuation of some 140,000 allied troops, of which 100,000 were French plus 198,000 British troops was an exercise of determined effort in the face of massive force. My father was captured, with the rest of the 51st Highlanders, defending this retreat at St. Valery. He came home, after escaping again, from the Red Army in Berlin in 1945. He counted himself lucky.

Weird things happenend still. For example when the French navy in north Africa saw allied ships approaching, sailors were waving with great joy but unfortunately the allied ships started firing and sunk the French ships, because they thought French navy would follow Petain. With this and also the Toulon disaster the allies lost precious strength. In 1944 when Montgomery decided to bomb the hell out of Caen and other towns to spare british soldiers, causing 30 000 civil deaths for zero result, it was also very sad, when one think Montgomery was saved in Dunkirk thanks to sacrifice of French troops. Tough stories.

The French soldiers were indeed very brave but they were also defending their homes. Unfortunately their leaders had a lack of strategic clarity and some horrendous decisions made it virtually impossible for the British to help them without being defeated also.
The German tactics of Blitzkrieg and the attack through the Ardennes split the allies and the with fall of Belgium it ensured their defeat. The British organised a tactical withdrawal to Dunkirk and the French became isolated in Lille and had no option but to fight on or surrender.
The Battle of Arras managed to slow the German forces but was not followed through and was too little too late but had a disproportionate effect on the Germans because the higher commanders were apprehensive about flank security.
The BEF continued to defend their withdrawal and the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards of the 3rd Division, rushed to reinforce the line near Furnes, where the British troops had been routed. The Guards restored order by shooting some of the fleeing troops and turning others around at bayonet point. The British troops returned to the line and the German assault was beaten back.
Meanwhile the RAF attacked the Germans and flew 2,739 fighter sorties, 651 bombing raids and 171 reconnaissance flights. Fighter Command claimed 262 enemy aircraft, losing 106 of their own.
After the last rescue boats left Dunkirk, the Germans captured some 40,000 French troops as well as at least 40,000 British soldiers.
Both the French and British did all that they could in the face of adversity and many brave men suffered from all sides including my Grandfather who was one of those that were left behind and for the next five years, mistreated and abused in violation of Geneva Convention. The POWs were denied food and medical treatment. The wounded were jeered at and some were summarily executed. To lower officer morale, the Nazis told British officers that they would lose their rank and be sent to the salt mines to work. They were forced to drink ditch water and eat putrid food. “These dreadful days were never forgotten by those who endured them. They had fought the battles to ensure the successful evacuation of over 300,000 fellow soldiers. Their sacrifice had brought the salvation of the British nation. Yet they have been forgotten. whilst those who escaped and made their way back home were hailed as heroes.”

The "halt order", which only concerned Von Rundsteht's armored spearhead, is used to lie by omission. Like the attacks on the perimeter had stopped.
    They never did.
Another ridiculous explanation, Hitler would have wanted to make peace with the U.K., and let the british escape for that reason.
    Which makes no sense.
Those ridiculous explanations aside: The Heer's Chief of Staff war Diary states that Von Rundsteht reported 50% of his tanks had been put out of action.
Also, the french had entirely flooded the area around Dunkirk. The city, is ruins, was stubbornly defended. Despite being hammered day and night by artillery and aircraft, the defenders, at 80% french ( 100% during the last 3 days ) held fast. The germans couldn't break through.
Nolan made a movie about british ww2 propaganda. Nearly eighty years after the events, that's as lame as one can get. Not even talking about the technical aspects.

    • @canicheenrage
      @canicheenrage 6 лет назад +15

+Mc Puff Von Rundsteht had reported to Hitler that 50% of his tanks had been put out of order.
The request for the halt came from the bottom up, not the other way around.
The french had entirely flooded the area around Dunkirk ( not the half baked version the netherlands did ), and swamps are quite unsuitable to tanks, while crossfire from french AT guns slaughtered them on roads; Even in the latest parts of the evacuation, the Fort of Les Dunes will prevent tank breakthroughs until it was razed by hundreds of bombers.
The city was in ruins, and in Lille, just a few days before, a rag tag of divisions had blocked and heavily damaged 7 german divisions, 3 of them armoured, and led by Rommel, until they ran out of ammunition.
Lastly, the RAF, which had only sent more or less 5 fighters squadrons out of 76 now had all those based in south east england fighting there, which balanced the numbers of aircraft and reduce the Luftwaffe's efficiency.
Getting the armored spearhead slaughtered in urban warfare might jeopardize the entire campaign, as there were still 60 french divisions with 1200 tanks outside of the pocket to face.
Which had nearly failed with the spearhead advancing too fast, not waiting for the infantry; And without the untimely replacement of Gamelin, and Gort attacking on his own just for the show ( retreating after losing just 6 tanks ), the allied counteroffensive in Arras, both from the south and north, may have isolated it.
But if it is certain that Hitler wanted to ensure his dominance both on the military in german inner politics that they dominated, and at the tactical level on "a bit too eager" commanders, that was just one factor.
That sole explanation you gave is the one favoured by KH Frieser in "blitzkrieg legend". If you're interested by the topic, i advise you to read "1940 myth and reality" by Clive Ponting, "Dunkirk, the patriotic myth" by N. Harman, and "La bataille de Dunkerque" by D Lormier.
If only the british side interests you, "Dunkirk: fight to the last man" from HS Montefiore is quite exhaustive on the subject, while "the miracle of Dunkirk" from W lord is more generalist.
      Anyway.
The presentation of the Halt Order as "Hitler wanting to let them go to make peace with GB" is nonsensical, and contradicts the facts. ( and comes from Liddell-Hart, a british historian which has made for himself quite a reputation of unreliability and bias ).
Especially since, when Churchill was making his "never surrender" speech, he was asking Germany through Sweden and Italy, what armistice terms germany was offering.
Germany didn't answer at the time.
i maintain what i wrote: as it is presented, it is a lie.
And that ridiculous presentation of the events, lying by omission, is repeating british war propaganda; the worst of it, actually, as later in the war, the british propaganda machine will only delay or soften information, and never outright lie as they did for Dunkirk ( "the BEF faced heroically the main enemy force", "we were let down by the french" ).
      Cheers.

Few people know what really happened to Dunkirk and what was the role of the French soldiers who allowed the English army to be able to go back to England. The English army would have been destroyed if the French had not protected them. The German generals were the first to recognize the bravery and heroism of the French. While those who do not know the real story of Dunkirk stop saying anything. and who knows the truth about the battle of bir hackeim in Libya where the French army has retained the africa korps of rommel for 14 days to allow montgomery to reorganize its forces.
Examples like these, there are dozens and dozens over the centuries, fed up that some English and American peddling false truths, bullshit lies about our army. Long live the French army, I am proud of you.

The French industry was working hard but France could not be ready before 1941. The issue was also that the USSR had let us down. They signed the non-aggression pact with Hitler, which gave the Nazis free hands to attack Western Europe much sooner than expected. In 1939, there was nothing much the French could have done, unless accepting again crippling human losses. We had already suffered much in WW1 and all our pre-WW2 strategy was to save our soldiers' lives.

Just for the honor of the soldiers killed and wounded, WW1 and WW2 in numbers :
WW1 France was not outclassed in fact neither France nor Germany were able to win best evidence both armies dug trenches and germans used 1st toxic gases and flamethrowers coz they were unable to defeat french! the biggest WW1 battle is Verdun a 1 year battle with germans only VS french only and it's germans who flee at the end in 1917.
France had 1.4 million soldiers killed + 4 millions wounded for only 41 millions inhabitants in 1914
in order to understand what it really means, it would be a war for USA nowadays with :
11.2 millions US soldiers killed + 32 millions wounded !!! coz USA = 325 millions people in 2019
More over, WW1 Air forces numbers :
    French air force = 51 000 aircrafts
    British air force = 45 000 aircrafts
US air force = 850 aircrafts and it's french ones with US Air Force painted on them
In last 1918 battle, french air force rules and on the ground, french army is by far the biggest one and it's french tanks that smash germans and protect allied troops have a look Renault FT17 the 1st MBT of history with a 360 ° shooting turret and fastest that german artillery coz british ones were 2 MPH armoured water tanks with only gun machines on the 2 sides not really a modern tank and germans destroyed them easily.
For WW2 : incompetent leaders coz France focused all money on social from 1936 to 1939 while Germany focused all money and unlimited swiss gold on modern weapons AND only 45 millions french VS 125 millions germans austrians italians + a french nazis coup at the same time in France led by the most loved and admired french marshal at that time the one who defeated Germans in WW1 + RAF who destroyed french navy in north Africa THE SAME WAY japonese did in Pearl Harbour to thank us JUST AFTER Dunkirk 2000 french sailors killed etc
That's why French were completly lost from 1940 to 1942 coz they didn't manage to understand who is the traitor, i mean general De Gaulle was a young and especially unknown general SO 10% followed Marshal Pétain + 10% followed De Gaulle + 80% didn't know which side is right one AND it's not a chance if french resistance and sabotage started in 1942 when USA became allied boss coz french spirit toward british was quite simple to understand : WW2 1st battles were won by french ground troops in Norway and then french saved the whole british army in Dunkirk and to thank us RAF destroyed our navy stationned in north Africa port by surprise so the rest of the french navy still in south of France had only 2 choices :
    1) join french empire but we must now escape to germans + italians and once arrived we'll be an easy target for RAF
    2) we sink our fleet this way germans won't be able to capture our fleet and french sailors won't be killed by a supposedly british allied !
And guess what, french also saved the 8th british army in north Africa have a look at BIR HAKEIM battle where 3000 french with only 75mm cannons stopped 30000 germans and italians with hundreds of tanks and aircrafts and WITHOUT french the germans would have captured the british and especially gas stocks coz in north Africa germans lost because of out of gas !
Finally, there were 2 landings in 1944, the famous D DAY in Normandy and the other one in south of France where there were more french soldiers that allied soldiers and most french cities were liberated by french army but of course no one talk about this landing coz french army was leading the fight and stopped few times in order to wait us army late on military forecasts !
So please, stop to insult millions of brave soldiers just for a pathetic Bush's government revenge coz France stopped USA in UN security council during 2nd Irak war !
France was not against USA in fact France has tried to get out of a trap coz USA do not know the Arab world i mean only 50 years old of experience with Muslim world !
By comparing, the Muslim world has 1441 years old and France has 1287 years old of experience with them ! And by the way, France was right, USA has never ever found mass destruction weapons AND it's just proove who was the honest one !

I can understand the bitterness towards the UK and it is justified. We must be grateful for our Allies who have helped us out and they don't get a mention, is it the British establishment's fault this is so? I am sure the troops who fought alongside each other did not think that way. Nettempereur, is correct we can think everything stops on June 4th, it does not France does not fall until 25th June. According to Major Ellis another 190,000 were rescued in operation Ariel between 15th to 25th June. The saddest part did Britain do enough to convince the 175,000 French soldiers pulled from both operation dynamo and ariel to fight on against the Germans as only 3,000 troops fought on with DeGaulle. The rest were repatriated back to France it was their choice to fight on or go back, whether we like it or not.

France has little or even no "soft power" in English-speaking countries. We have a traditional rivalry with the British (English-speaking Canada, Australia and New Zealand would also side with them on that matter). Since 1904, we have been allies and we have prospered together so it makes a kind of funny relationship, best "frienemies" if you want.
Regarding the USA, we have also some disagreements with them regarding geopolitics but it does not put in question our historical friendship. The biggest issue with Americans is that they see any ally as a pawn (not just the French) and it's very difficult to be respected by them if you cannot "put your weight in the balance". The idea of "America First" was not born with Trump, it's a permanent trend of US foreign affairs. They never consider multilateralism. They are the biggest one, so they expect to rule and others to shut up and follow the line. As the French are often barking against that (although too powerless at the moment to oppose it), they do see us as an "untrustworthy ally" (latest example with the way to handle Russia since the invasion of Ukraine). Consequently, the French may not have the best reputation in US media and cultural works. You will watch often more jokes or derogatory statements about us than praise, especially on politics and history. Overall, we have our ups and downs but we remain friends because we have a lot in common. Especially a tendency to stand together when shit really hits the fan (Royal Navy, Wehrmacht, Cuban Missile crisis, 9/11, etc...).

Yes, the truth is historical but not good to say about English. They did not even warn the French army that they would leave without holding their position and therefore, left the French to fend for themselves in front of the Germans. I understand the expression "spinning" better now. Thanks to the sacrifice of the French and their heroism, the English were able to return home in great numbers, and the Germans themselves recognized that they had left Dunkirk a great deal of strength and that their army was diminished. I am proud of our military, and I am proud of the fact that the critics are looking into this rather than denigrating our country’s role in the war.

    • @christianfournier6862
      @christianfournier6862 Год назад

@Duke_Leto= There was a general mistrust in the French high command about the possibility of communication interceptions by the enemy. This perception permeated throughout the Army, leading to reliance on telephone lines over radios. The result was a much less nimble command structure and a much longer decision loop.
Ernst R. May (an American historian) has documented this in his book “Strange Victory”.
His thesis is that the German high command had intelligence about this weakness in the French command structure and took the calculated risk of a offensive through the Ardennes, betting that the French response would be too slow to be able to catch the Panzers on the vulnerable moment of their breakthrough from the forest. The bet was successful.
In effect, to take a tennis analogy, it amounted to an end-court smash on the line leaving the opponent flat-footed.
The “Blitzkrieg” that followed did not give the French the opportunity to recover from this devastating blow.

@Nettempereur Exactly. They had to fight on, until the 100,000 UK troops plus 150, 000 French could be saved. The majority of French were returned to Calais. Calais was also held to the end by UK troops after the return of French troops via Calais. The UK 51st Division fought on whilst the French surrendered.

Dynamo operation allowed to save 198,000 British troops, 123,000 French troops and 16,800 Belgian troops). I don't know where you found 100k UK and 150k French figures, these are incorrect.
I don't understand how you imply that Allied troops could go back and forth from Calais to Dunkirk as both cities were encircled.
The 51st (Highland) Division did not fight in the Dunkirk Pocket. After Dynamo, it defended the Somme river and then Normandy (in 1940 I mean) alongside the French and they evacuated most of their men from the little harbour of Saint Valery-en-Caux. Some French and British stayed till the end and were forced to surrender (together), including Major-General Fortune (one of the most senior British officers to be taken prisoner in the war).

There were many brave Frenchmen in 1940. However, their leadership was atrocious, and many of their fellow soldiers fled on rumors at Sedan, starting the whole collapse that required Operation Dynamo. Honor demanded that they protect the rear of their allies who would be able to carry on the war, and they did. Or at least many did. At the end of the evacuation tens of thousands of deserters and malingerers came out of hiding and because they were not officially on the rolls, many took the place of French fighting men who deserved to be evacuated first. Sadly, most evacuated were later surrendered back in France, and of 2,000 recovering wounded and sick men DeGaulle asked to stay and fight with him in the UK, only 200 took him up on his offer.

It was based on the French prospective of the battle of France and went into detail on French tactics battles and interviewed French soldiers and officers. It’s not a French documentary it’s British and was shown on bbc2. The documentary was a one off program.

The Beeb did a 3 part documentary with a young Benedict Cumberbatch in it which had some of the French decision makers in it , there was also an episode of Richard Holmes excellent War Walks series on Dunkirk with interviews featuring British and French survivors .

I think the role of French is cruelly underrated in history and I thank
You for this video, yet I don’t think we can blame Nolan for that.
His subject was not the battle but the evacuation, and he showed and told that it was the French who were holding.
Moreover (spoiler) the death of the young French is kind of a symbol for their sacrifice.
We can think about the first scene AND all the scenes where they tell the French are holding, plus at the end the general who says he stays for the French.
I think The movie did justice to the French involvement.

I think the character of the general is based on General Victor Fortune who was captured at Saint-Valery-En-Caux with his brave 51st Highlanders Division, while fighting with their French comrades in arms after Dunkirk.
The general could have chosen to be evacuated with his men. Instead he and his troops stayed behind.
General De Gaulle retold how he was so moved by General Fortune's noble choice that it was one of the factors in his decision to pursue the war beside the British.
American author Robert Carse who was on the Atlantic convoys in WW2, has written in 1965 "Dunkerque" where he told in length of the sacrifice of French General Beaufrere and his 40,000 men who were captured by the nazis, after holding the perimeter until the evacuation was completed.
An extraordinary coincidence which is truly premonitory : the last issue of the French magazine Match (''Paris-Match'' after the war) featuring the picture of a French marine on the cover, bears the date June 6th 1940 ! You can see it at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

I did not see any pieces of the Dunkirk operation in this doc. It is all about France and the Narvik operation that went quite well for the Allieds.

Please, next time, do read the video description fully : Here are some actual footage of the French Army fighting in France in June 1940 (Fall Rot), after the evacuation of Dunkirk. And also combats in Norway in May 1940.
